3-D Shapes Worksheets! {FREE Printables!}

One Geometry topic that is introduced at a young age and then explored in more complex ways as kids get older is 3D shapes . Obviously, the first thing young mathematicians learn is to simply recognize the shapes, learn their names and discover them in the world around us. As kids get older, it’s important to help them learn and understand polyhedron nets .  Understanding what these shapes look like “flat” helps with spatial sense and reasoning and will build a solid foundation for later study of surface area . These simple 3D shapes worksheets can help students make connections and understand 3D shapes and their nets !

Shape Chart Title

Below are a few introductory worksheets on the topic of three dimensional shapes. These can be used in upper elementary or middle school, depending on the level of your students, or as a quick review in a high school Geometry class.  I hope you find them helpful!

Included in this download are 3 different practice worksheets . The first is a chart to help students learn the properties of various 3D shapes, as well as compare them and find real life examples.

Shape Chart Image

The second worksheet is a simple matching page to help kids determine the nets  (what each shape looks like taken apart and laid flat) of each of the 3D shapes.

Nets Matching

The third worksheet is a little more challenging. This page gives various images, and students have to determine whether or not they are the nets of actual polyhedron. This requires the use of spatial reasoning skills and can help them recognize actual nets.

If your kids are having trouble determining the figures, encourage them to cut out a piece of paper and see if they can fold it into a shape, rather than guessing or giving up.

At Cazoom Math, we offer the best worksheets that will help your child be able to understand 3d shapes while every activity is aligned to the Common Core Standards . Our 6th-grade worksheets will help them be able to create nets of shapes which will prepare them to find the surface area of these 3d shapes in the future. The 7th-grade worksheets will have the opportunity to practice isometric drawings as well as drawing the 2d shapes created from different perspectives of a 3D object (front, top, and side).</p><h2>3D Shapes Worksheets</h2><p>Math becomes a much more involved subject once a child reaches the middle-school level. Middle school-aged children sometimes have a tough time mastering 3D shapes and their associated math problems.</p><p>Although most children master the naming of 2D and 3D shapes by the end of elementary school, putting these shapes into math problems can suddenly make a child feel overwhelmed. We have created a wide array of worksheets to help your child master this math skill, so they are ready to continue their education into high school and beyond.</p><p>The worksheets we offer at Cazoom Maths are designed for the middle-school level but are also ideal for high school students who need a refresher course on the subject. We offer a 3d shapes worksheet for the types of problems sixth-and seventh-grade students come across while learning common core math and going through testing.</p><h2>DIFFERENCES BETWEEN 3D AND 2D SHAPES</h2><p>The “D” in 2D and 3D shapes , specifies the dimensions of the shape. The primary difference between 3D and 2D shapes is that the 2D shapes are comprised of only length and width . On the other side, 3D shapes are incorporated into three dimensions, length, width, and height . </p><h2>Why 3D Shapes Are Sometimes Difficult for Students</h2><p>We are faced with 3D shapes daily, but we do not always look to these shapes as being mathematical. Many children find it difficult to master the principles of 3D shapes when it comes to mathematics because they find the subject boring.</p><p>When students are presented with real-world shape examples, their understanding is heightened and they are able to stick with the subject without becoming bored. Cazoom Maths 3d shape worksheets are designed with bright colors and easy-to-follow diagrams that make learning interesting. You will find your child or student is engaged in learning from the moment you hand them their worksheet.</p><h2>Understanding Dimensions in Math</h2><ul><li>Zero dimension – These are represented as dots and there is no length, height or width to measure.</li><li>One dimension – If your child connects the dots and forms a line, they have now created a one-dimensional object, called a line segment.</li><li>Two dimension – This is a shape that has a length and a width that can be measured. We offer 3d and 2d shapes worksheets to help your child master these dimensions before they graduate from seventh grade.</li><li>Three dimension – Three-dimensional objects can be touched and picked up. They offer a third dimension that is depth.</li><li>Fourth dimension– The fourth dimension has been described by Einstein as being time. The fourth dimensions are something your child will likely not encounter until high school and beyond, but it never hurts to help them get a start on learning core concepts they will later need.</li></ul><h2>Common 3D Shapes Middle Schoolers Need to Know</h2><ul><li>Tetrahedron</li><li>Dodecahedron</li><li>Icosahedron</li><li>Square pyramid</li><li>Hexagonal pyramid</li><li>Triangular prism</li><li>Pentagonal prism</li><li>Hexagonal prism</li></ul><p>While most middle-schoolers can easily identify spheres and cubes, some of the 3D shapes are more difficult to identify. Our 3d shapes worksheets have been created to help middle-school students easily learn the fundamentals of 3D shapes so they will be able to take this knowledge and learn to excel at math problems that involve these shapes.</p><h2>Learning 3D Shape Formulas</h2><p>Benefits of teaching with math worksheets.</p><ul><li>We have worked tirelessly to make sure our worksheets are varied and interesting. There are many proven benefits to helping children learn math with worksheets. </li><li>Worksheets help to summarize the math topics that have been taught in class. They work well in the classroom and as homework assignments to help students master what is being taught.</li><li>A simple instruction is not enough for most children. Worksheets help to bridge the gap between being instructed and being able to do the work they have been taught.</li><li>Worksheets help students to be able to see the bigger picture and how working with 3D shapes evolves into many areas of math.</li><li>A worksheet becomes an extension of the textbook and helps to expand the topics being taught in the classroom.</li><li>These worksheets help to encourage students to express their mathematical ideas and discover new concepts.</li><li>Completing worksheets helps to give a child a sense of accomplishment in their studies. Many children love being able to accomplish their work and feel as if they are making strides towards understanding new math concepts.</li></ul><h2>Suggestions for Using Our 3D Shapes Worksheets</h2><p>There are many ways to make worksheets a part of everyday learning for middle-schoolers. Here are a few strategies to help make worksheets more exciting in the classroom and at home.</p><ul><li>Cut the worksheet up into sections with each problem on its own piece of paper. The students can place the papers facedown and then each student draws a paper like a game. The first student to get the right answer wins.</li><li>Students can be placed in small groups and worksheets can be passed out to each group. The teacher will call out a problem and the group has so much time to respond with an agreed-upon answer. The group that gets the answer right wins a prize.</li><li>Go through the worksheets as small groups and compare answers. This helps to increase communication skills and improves a student’s ability to participate in positive groupthink.</li><li>Have students complete their worksheets and make an intentional error. Pass the completed worksheets to different students and see if they can spot the error. This challenge is often fun for students of all ages.</li><li>Allow students to complete worksheets in pairs. Working tandemly will make the process much more engaging for students.</li></ul><p>We recommend offering an award system for successfully completing 2d and 3d shapes worksheets. While learning is certainly a reward, students are likely going to feel more motivated if they receive a small tangible reward for their hard work.</p><h2>Browse Our Wide Selection of Worksheets</h2><p>If your child or student is struggling with 3D shapes and formulas, our worksheets will provide them with the instruction they need for success. No child should be left feeling overly frustrated on any math subject.</p><p>Our 3d shapes worksheets offer engaging topics that will open up your child’s mind and help them begin to understand this math concept in a way that is on their age and grade level. The worksheets start off teaching simple concepts and then progress to tougher subjects when the child is ready.</p><p>We make it simple for teachers and parents to search for the worksheets they need. Simply search by topic or grade level and find just what you need. These worksheets print in crystal clear definition with bright colors and engaging graphics.</p><p>You will find kids become excited to complete these worksheets because they can build their math skills with much less stress. While mastering 3D shapes is not always easy, our teaching worksheets make the process of learning much more engaging and fun.</p><h2>Find the Perfect Worksheets to Suit Your Needs</h2><p>We welcome parents and educators alike to browse through our 3d shapes worksheets to choose the perfect one for their students. Keep visiting frequently to discover the latest worksheets we have available. As your child progresses in their sixth- and seventh-grade years, they will be able to learn all of the key math concepts they will need, to be prepared for high school.</p><p>Get started today on printing all the 3d shapes worksheets you need for your child or your classroom. Read on for a guide to all things three-dimensional from our experienced teacher team, including features of 3D shapes, examples of these objects and more! </blockquote><h2>What Are 3D Shapes? A Kid-Friendly Definition</h2><p>Looking for a simple way to describe 3D shapes (referred to as 3D objects in the Australian curriculum) to your students? </p><p>These are shapes that have three dimensions: length, width and depth. They differ from 2D shapes, which only have two dimensions (length and width). The other key difference between two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects is that 3D objects have volume. Volume refers to the amount of space inside the 3D object. </p><h2>What Are the Properties of 3D Shapes?</h2><p>In addition to learning the correct mathematical names of the 3D shapes they are familiar with (more on that later!), students in primary school are taught that these objects have specific properties. The properties of three-dimensional objects are their faces, edges and vertices. The number of faces, edges and vertices varies from one 3D shape to another.</p><p>A face on a three-dimensional shape is any flat surface on the outside of the object with straight edges. The square base on a square-based pyramid is an example of a face.</p><p>An edge refers to the straight line that is formed when two faces of a 3D shape meet. Using the previous example of the square-based pyramid, this 3D shape has four edges around the base. These edges occur where the square face at the bottom of the pyramid meets the triangular faces that make up the sides of the pyramid.</p><p>A vertex on a 3D shape is any point where two edges meet. Another word commonly used as a synonym for vertice is ‘corner.’ Returning to our square-based pyramid, this 3D shape has four vertices at the base, and one at the very top where the edges of the four triangular faces meet.   </p><h2>What Are Some Examples of 3D Shapes?</h2><p>Most primary students are familiar with the overarching concept of a 3D shape. After all, these objects are to be found everywhere in our immediate environments!  Think of household items such as books, cans of drink, boxes of food, balls and so on. But do they know the mathematical names of these familiar objects? Some students may, but the vast majority probably don't! </p><p>That is why teachers must explicitly teach the mathematical names of these familiar objects.</p><p>Here are some of the more common 3D shapes that your students will encounter during their primary school education.</p><p>A sphere is a ball-shaped 3D object that is perfectly symmetrical. A sphere has one curved surface and unlike many other 3D objects, it has no faces, edges or vertices.</p><p>Prisms are 3D objects that have the same 2D shape at each end. The sides that connect these end faces together are rectangular. Prisms are named after their cross-section. The cross-section of a prism is the shape that is made by cutting vertically down through the object. For example, a prism with a triangular cross-section is called a triangular prism.</p><p>Pyramids are 3D objects with triangular sides that meet together at the top (called the apex). The base of a pyramid can be any 2D shape, and this shape gives the pyramid its name. For example, a pyramid with a hexagon as its base is called a hexagonal pyramid.</p><p>Don't be fooled... a cone may look a little like a pyramid, but it is a 3D object in its own right! A cone has a circular base and one curved surface that tapers to a single point (the apex). The apex sits directly above the centre of the base circle.</p><p>A cylinder is a 3D object similar to a can of soft drink. It has two identical ends which are circular in shape. One curved surface joins the two circular ends together.</p><h2>What Are 3D Shape Nets?</h2><p>One highly effective way of teaching your students about the properties of 3D shapes is to have your students construct their own 3D models using nets. These nets are essentially a flattened-out version of a 3D shape that can be cut out, folded and adhered together to create a model of that particular 3D shape.</p><p>Best of all, 3D nets are great teaching tools to help students understand the properties of these shapes, as they can see and count the faces, edges and vertices with greater ease and accuracy. Students also love decorating their nets with bright and vibrant designs … and you can make some very cool creations with them, too!</p><h2>Do 3D Shapes Have Lines of Symmetry?</h2><p>Good question! When exploring two-dimensional shapes, students are taught about lines of symmetry: imaginary lines that divide a shape into two equal halves that are an exact reflection of each other. When exploring 3D objects, it seems natural that the concept of symmetry may crop up!</p><p>Unlike their two-dimensional counterparts, three-dimensional objects do not have lines of symmetry. It is important for students to understand that because they have depth (as well as length and width), three-dimensional objects cannot be made symmetrical using a single line. It takes multiple lines that form a 2D shape to create what is called a ‘plane of symmetry’ within a 3D object.</p><ul><li>Teaching Resource 62</li><li>Lesson Plan 5</li><li>Unit Plan 1</li><li>Worksheets 13</li><li>Templates 9</li><li>Interactive Games 8</li><li>Classroom Posters 8</li><li>Sorting Activities 4</li><li>Teaching Slides 4</li><li>Task Cards 3</li><li>Inquiry Based Learning Activities 3</li><li>Colour By Code Worksheets 2</li><li>Cut and Paste Worksheets 2</li><li>Flashcards 1</li><li>Active Games 1</li><li>Matching Games 1</li><li>Classroom Bulletin Boards 1</li><li>Classroom Decor 1</li><li>Board Games 1</li><li>Mini Books 1</li><li>Crossword Puzzles 1</li><li>Foundation Year 15</li></ul><h2>availability</h2><p>File formats.</p><ul><li>Printable PDF 60</li><li>Google Slides 31</li><li>Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx) 11</li><li>Microsoft PowerPoint Template (.potx) 5</li><li>Microsoft Word (.docx) 3</li><li>Microsoft Word Template (.dotx) 2</li><li>Google Sheets 1</li><li>Teach Starter Publishing 69</li></ul><p><center><img style=

Today I’m sharing two worksheets to help kids explore 3D shapes. Let’s dive in!

3D Shape Worksheets

Download these free 3D shape worksheets!

The first worksheet asks kids to count faces, edges, and vertices on each shape.

First, let’s look at some definitions.

face – any of the flat surfaces of a solid object

edge – a line segment where two faces meet

vertex – a point where two or more lines meet

I strongly recommend having 3D shape manipulatives so your students can study them as they work. If you buy two of this set , you should have enough for 20 students. If you’re working with an individual student, you could buy the foam shapes that we used .

3d shapes drawing worksheet

Let’s take a rectangular prism.

You can see that it has 6 faces. Each is shaped like a rectangle. It also has 12 edges and 8 vertices.

Download these free 3D shape worksheets!

We examined each shape . I helped my Six count the faces, edges, and vertices.

He recorded them on the worksheet.

For the second worksheet, we examined whether the shapes could roll, stack or slide.

He colored the happy or sad face after he experimented with each figure.

Some were a little tricky, so he added some notes on his worksheet. For example, the bottom of the cone stacks, but not the top. The same is true of the pyramid.

We hope you enjoy this fun freebie!

Hi, I am big fan of your activities and printable. Thanks for your efforts and sharing ! I got a question. All the shapes can slide right (in roll, stack , slide) ? Thanks !

April 10, 2017 at 5:07 am

Hello! Shapes can slide if they can move on their base without turning or rolling. So all shapes can slide EXCEPT the sphere.

April 10, 2017 at 8:13 am

ok, Thank you so much for the clarification !!

I really appreciate and trust your free printables – thank you so much! I am a great grandmother looking after (guardian to) her 5 year old great grandson. He has been diagnosed with O.D.D. and Severe Anxiety so has a hard time in Kindergarten. Printing your resources has helped me to explain and guide him through the items he has problems understanding in the school setting when being inundated with too many sensory situations that cause him to shut down. I am hoping with a loving and quiet environment at home that he will, with the additional knowledge you and I are providing him, start to make larger strides in his school work and not feel the pressure so much. I have many years to look forward to getting your assistance for this bright, loving boy. Thanks again

Unlocking Spatial Skills: How 3D Shapes Worksheets Transform Learning

Teaching young children with a three-dimensional shapes worksheet can be both exciting and challenging. Introducing children to 3D shapes is a fundamental part of their early math education. With the right resources, educators can make the learning process engaging and enjoyable.

3D Solid Shapes Worksheets Ideas

  • 3D Shape Worksheets for Kindergarten: Introduce pre k and kindergarten kids to basic 3D shapes like a cube, cones, pyramids, spheres, and cylinders through hands-on activities. Provide worksheets with coloring exercises where they can color different types of 3D shapes and identify them in everyday objects.
  • 3D Geometry Shapes Worksheet: For older elementary kids, offer worksheets that delve deeper into identifying the properties of 3D shapes. Include questions related to properties like edges, vertices, and faces, and encourage them to draw and label various 3D shapes. Take this activity a step further with a geometric 3D solid shapes worksheet. Challenge your class to explore geometric principles with worksheets that involve constructing 3D shapes using paper templates. They can cut, fold, and assemble the shapes, enhancing their spatial reasoning skills.
  • Classifying 3D Figures Worksheet: Engage students in critical thinking by providing worksheets that ask them to classify 3D figures based on attributes like the number of faces, edges, and vertices. Encourage them to justify their classifications.
  • 3D Shapes Template Printable: Share printable templates of various 3D shapes, like pyramids, a cube, triangular prisms, or a pentagonal prism. Students can cut out these templates and fold them to create physical models. This hands-on activity reinforces their understanding of 3D shapes' construction.
  • 3D Solids Worksheets: Create worksheets that incorporate real-world applications of 3D solid shapes. For instance, have students solve problems by calculating the volume of a box or the surface area of a cylinder. Alternatively, identify students who might want a challenge, and ask them to compare 3D solids, like a rectangular prism or triangular prisms, to determine the shape of greater volume, or have them solve geometry riddles. These practical exercises help the child relate geometry to everyday scenarios.
  • Name Shapes Worksheet: Develop a worksheet that helps young learners identify and become familiar with the names of different 3D shapes, like cones, spheres, a triangular prism, or other solid shapes. Provide images of objects, and students identify and match them with the correct shape names. This activity enhances vocabulary and shape recognition.

Steps to Make Printable Worksheets for 3D Shapes

  • Determine Your Educational Objectives: Clearly define the learning goals and objectives of the worksheet. What specific 3D shape concepts do you want your class to understand or practice?
  • Select 3D Shapes and Topics: Choose the 3D shapes and topics you want to cover in the worksheet. Consider whether you want to focus on shape identification, properties, or calculations like volume and surface area.
  • Design the Worksheet Layout: Create a layout for your worksheet, including space for instructions, questions, and visuals. Consider the age and grade level of your target audience when designing the worksheet's format.
  • Create Visuals and Questions: Design or select images or diagrams of 3D shapes to include in the worksheet. Add shapes like a rectangular prism or triangular prism to the worksheet. Craft questions and exercises that align with your educational objectives. Make sure the questions are clear and concise.
  • Incorporate Variety and Engagement: Include a variety of question types, such as multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and drawing exercises, to keep your class engaged. Add color and visuals to make the worksheet visually appealing.
  • Proofread and Test: Review the worksheet for accuracy, clarity, and coherence. Worksheets printed on a paper copy can be distributed and tested with a sample group of kids to ensure that the instructions and questions are understandable and achieve the intended learning outcomes.
