Rockies Designate Dakota Hudson For Assignment

By Nick Deeds | July 7, 2024 at 10:56am CDT

The Rockies announced this morning that they’ve designated right-hander Dakota Hudson for assignment. The move clears a space on the active roster for right-hander Tanner Gordon , whose contract selection was previously reported ahead of his start against the Royals this afternoon. Colorado’s 40-man roster stands at 39.

Hudson, 30 in September, was non-tendered by the Cardinals back in November but signed with the Rockies on a one-year deal in early January. A first-round pick by St. Louis back in 2016, he made his big league debut with the club in 2018 and looked to be an impressive young arm and enjoyed notable success early in his career with a 3.17 ERA that was 31% better than league average in 241 innings of work during his first three years in the majors. Despite that success, there were some red flags evident in Hudson’s profile has he struck out just 18.1% of batters faced and walked 11.6%, leaving him with a lackluster 4.74 FIP. Hudson’s ability to generate grounders was his most valuable tool, and his 57.3% groundball rate during that period led all qualified major league hurlers.

Tommy John surgery wiped out almost all of Hudson’s 2021 campaign, and upon his return Hudson was unable to garner the same impressive results he had posted earlier in his career. In 221 innings of work with the Cardinals during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Hudson struggled to a below-average 4.64 ERA with a nearly matching 4.60 FIP. He walked 10% of batters while striking out a meager 12.9% of his opponents, and with the results now matching the peripherals St. Louis opted to part ways with the righty rather than tender him a contract this year.

That led him to Colorado, and Hudson ultimately made 17 starts for the Rockies this year, pitching 86 1/3 innings. The results of those outings were nothing short of brutal. The right-hander’s ERA ballooned to 5.84 this year as he walked (11.8%) nearly as many batters has he struck out (12.3%) in 86 1/3 innings of work. While Hudson’s 52.4% grounder rate this year was still elite, that figure is a far cry from the aforementioned 57.3% rate that he posted prior to his surgery. Given the ghastly results and his overall diminished profile, it’s not necessarily a surprise that the Rockies have decided to pull the plug on Hudson’s tenure with the club. They’ll now have one week to either attempt to work out a trade for Hudson’s services or pass him through waivers, although the righty has enough service time that he would have the opportunity to reject an outright assignment should he clear waivers.

Hudson has a 3.72 ERA on the road away from Coors Field this season. Someone will probably claim him off waivers.

He will definitely get claimed, as his salary is only $1.5mill. But will he get traded first?

I could see the Guardians giving him a shot. Hudson was very effective until 2022. If anyone can help him recapture some semblance of that magic, it’s CLE.

CLE’s front office does seem to like reclamation projects, and he’s relatively inexpensive. I wonder what COL would want for him in a trade.

Looks like Dakota Hudson’s tenure with the Rockies hit a rocky road—hopefully Tanner Gordon can ‘tame’ the Royals today!

Pro: 3.72 ERA away from Coors Con: 46:48 K:BB ratio Pro: $1.5mill salary (pro-rated)

Will he get claimed or traded? He’s definitely staying in MLB…

Gotta be some kind of trade to be worked out. I’m surprised they DFA’d him since they already had a spot open on the 40 man. Even if German Marquez is coming off the 60 day IL soon, it could have given them a couple of extra days leverage in a Hudson deal.

He was always a ground ball pitcher until he got hurt. If someone can figure out a way to get that back he’d make a nice bullpen piece.

And he will continue to wait. No team in MLB wants his baggage.

This is a really poor write-up. The interesting thing about Hudson is a HUGE percentage of the damage against him happened at Coors, where he’s a terrible fit. His road numbers are pretty solid.

It’s a free website. You don’t have to click on it. Take your whining elsewhere.

The elite ground ball % pitcher is a bad fit for Coors?

I doubt the Rockies could get anything for him in a trade unless they eat some money, but the remaining salary is small enough, and his non-Coors pitching decent enough, that I could see a pitching-needy team putting in a waiver claim. Cubs? Padres?

They should get something like a rookie league player or something. Maybe an older prospect that might get squeezed out one Rule 5 this year. Hudson has not been great, but he has not been bad enough for 29 teams to only want a waiver claim.

Mariners could use him, assuming Woo is injury prone. Hancock isn’t quite ready yet and heaven forbid someone else gets injured.

Other teams might hope he is another Jeremy Guthrie. Unplayable in Colorado but a decent mid/back of rotation starter after he escaped.

' src=

It’s the walks that did him in.

He is currently horrible! His overall record is not bad. Brewers would have picked him up,, but got 2 veterans this week. Not very good veterans, but no room in the Inn!

What took them so long?

5 Epic Parks for Your Next Adventure

[email protected]

Cherry Creek Reservior

If you’ve been in Denver for more than a few months, you know the most famous parks in Denver. Wash(ington) Park, City Park, Cheesman Park and more are all within a short distance of the University of Denver. We’ve covered those here and here .

But plenty of other options are also tantalizing. Do you want to go biking, shooting and boating — all in the same afternoon? We've got that. Want to ride an adorable tiny train through an equally adorable petting zoo? You betcha. We can already hear you, invisible internet reader, asking: What about the tallest playground slide in Colorado? Fear not. That, too, is within reach. It’ll just take a vehicle to get there.

In no particular order, here are five lesser-known Front Range parks that will tickle your sense of adventure and get you outside for some fresh air and Vitamin D.

1. Cherry Creek State Park (4201 S. Parker Road)

This one might be considered cheating, but “park” is in the name. Cherry Creek State Park in Aurora features an 880-acre reservoir surrounded by prairies and wetland natural areas. The total acreage of the park tops 3,000 and features a campground, shooting range, one of the largest off-leash dog areas in the city, plus much more.

The reservoir itself allows boating, and everything from motorboats to paddleboards are welcome. Elsewhere on the lake, fishing is allowed with a Colorado fishing license .

Hiking is headlined by the 6.7-mile Cherry Creek Reservoir Loop, which encircles the main body of water. It connects into the larger Cherry Creek Regional Trail, 40 miles of wide, concrete pathing that snakes from downtown Denver to Douglas County. The trails in Cherry Creek State Park branch into smaller hikes that include the Wetland Loop Trail and Dog Park Loop.

Speaking of our furry friends, this is the perfect place to let them run free. The park has 107 acres of fenced area (with water access) where your pup can play without a leash. Just make sure you clean up after him or her.

There’s also the Family Shooting Center, where you can fire pistols, rifles, shotguns or bows with a variety of distances and targets. Gear rentals and lessons are available for newcomers.

Belleview Park

2. Belleview Park (5001 S Inca Drive)

Overwhelmed by adulting and all the hard work it entails? Feeling like a kid again is only a quick trip to Englewood away.

Belleview Park is nothing short of magical. The biggest highlight is Englewood Farm & Train, which has run for more than 30 years. The red and lime green miniature train engine pulls more than 60,000 park guests of all ages each year through acres of green space, creeks and nature trails. Along the way sits a petting zoo where kids (and kids-at-heart) can love on some farm animals.

The larger park area has several picnic shelters that are perfect for events, a playground, an outdoor basketball court and tennis courts.

If you’re looking to cool off, Belleview also includes Pirate’s Cove Waterpark. With enough piratey water features to make Jack Sparrow blush, three waterslides and a lazy river, there’s something for everyone.

Want to avoid the crowds of children? Adult Night is coming up on July 6, hosted by the City of Englewood.

Cornerstone Park

3. Cornerstone Park (5150 S Windamere Street)

If you stood at the top of the slide at Pirate’s Cove and looked across Belleview Avenue, you could see our next entry. Located just across the border into Littleton, Cornerstone Park offers some unique activities.

First and most famously, there is Colorado Journey Miniature Golf. The pair of 18-hole courses are themed around Colorado landmarks, from Mesa Verde to the Florissant Fossil Beds. In 2018, Westword called it the “best miniature golf for newbies” and experts tell us it’s an excellent place for date night.

Elsewhere in the park, you’ll find batting cages, three softball diamonds, an inline skating rink, a skate park and a cricket ground. Grab your cricket bat and check out the wicket with a mountain view so beautiful, it entranced Sir Garry Sobers (the Michael Jordan of cricket) when he visited.

Redrocks

4. Red Rocks Amphitheatre (18300 W Alameda Parkway)

Yes, Red Rocks is a well-known, world-class outdoor concert venue . But did you know that Colorado’s 25th national historic landmark also includes nature trails on its 868 acres?

The Trading Post Trail is 1.4-mile loop that weaves through the magnificent rock formations surrounding the venue. Red Rocks Trail adds another 6 miles of hiking that connects to the Dakota Ridge Trail and, therefore, the larger Denver-area trail ecosystem.

The surrounding rock formations have fossil fragments of a 40-foot sea serpent, plus dinosaur tracks.

For five Mondays each summer, there is Film on the Rocks . “The Sandlot” is coming up on July 18 and “Dune” rolls around on Aug. 15.

You can also try running the steps like this madman .

5. Twin Silo Park (5564 Ziegler Road)

We’ve finally arrived, invisible internet reader. Welcome to Twin Silos Park in Fort Collins, home to what many believe to be the tallest playground slide in Colorado. Wending its way through the two namesake silos, this palace of plastic starts more than halfway up on one silo and lets out at the base of the other, for a total drop of more than 35 feet.

The interiors of both silos feature a double-helix climber. One silo has a zipline leading elsewhere in the park. The other features a netting-heavy balance beam that connects to a nearby barn converted into a play area.

If you’d rather keep your feet firmly planted, try the community gardens, an orchard, hops trellis, paved trails, pickleball courts and custom art installations. For action sports, consider the large BMX park.

The City of Fort Collins Park Planning and Development Department won an award from the American Society of Landscape Architects for its sustainable design.

Sunday, the Rockies designated Hudson for assignment and selected the contract of right-hander Tanner Gordon from Triple-A Albuquerque. Tanner will make his major league debut and start against Kansas City on Sunday afternoon at Coors Field.

Hudson, 30, who signed a one-year, $1.5 million free-agent contract to come to Colorado, struggled mightily at Coors Field. He was 0-6 in nine starts with an 8.26 ERA, giving up seven homers. Opponents hit .359 against him.

The right-hander fared much better on the road, going 2-6 with a 3.72 ERA with three homers given up in eight starts. Opponents hit .212 against him.

“With Dakota, it was uneven,” manager Bud Black said Sunday morning. “The walks were troublesome as the season unfolded.”

Hudson struck out 12.3% of the batters faced while walking 11.6%. That’s untenable, particularly when pitching at Coors Field.

Black praised Hudson’s clubhouse presence but added, “Performance-wise, it was time for us to look at somebody else.”

Plus, veteran right-hander German Marquez will soon complete his rehab assignment with Double-A Hartford and could pitch for the Rockies against the Mets in New York next weekend.

When asked if Hudson’s Coors Field woes were one of the main reasons for designating Hudson, Black said no.

“I don’t think so,” Black said. “I think it was just the collection of all of his starts and not so much Coors Field.”

Bryant update. Veteran first baseman/designated hitter Kris Bryant, recovering from a left rib contusion and strained left oblique, is ramping up his baseball activities and has been hitting in the cage. Bryant will join the Rockies on their upcoming road trip through Cincinnati and New York.

“He will start hitting on the field tomorrow (in Cincinnati),” Black said. “That’s another big step.”
