Ways to find product ideas: 4 tactics
1. put your own spin on trending products.
If you have your eye on a specific product category or type of product, ask yourself whether you can improve on what’s already selling well—or offer something better. Try these tactics:
- Look for higher demand, lower competition products – You may see products in high demand, but what’s the competition like? The number of reviews can give you an idea. Generally, high-demand products with a lower number of reviews indicate lower competition and an opportunity for you to jump in.
- Use product reviews to guide product improvements – Browse product reviews to get a sense of customer feedback. Write down the pros and cons and look for areas where you can exceed customer expectations by offering something different to meet buyer needs.

How to Start a Multimillion-Dollar Amazon Business With Less Than $2,000 It takes just one hour a day.
Mar 18, 2021 Originally published Oct 3, 2019
This article was written by Matt Clark , co-founder and chairman of Amazing.com , co-creator of Amazing Selling Machine , and an Advisor in The Oracles .
This isn't a popular opinion, but entrepreneurship is a terrible idea. While it's great for society that so many people are innovating, taking massive risks and working 18-hour days is rarely in the individual's best interest. Yes, the potential payout is huge, but the odds of success are low.
At the same time, it's increasingly difficult to stay happy in a salaried job when you're bombarded with entrepreneurial success stories that seem too good to be true. But what if there were a reliable way to start a business that could significantly improve your life without sacrificing blood, sweat, and years?
Thanks to Amazon, there is. Unlike most entrepreneurial ventures, you can start an Amazon business by spending just one hour a day on it and less than $2,000. You can create a multimillion-dollar asset that gives you financial freedom and free time . Here's what it takes and exactly what it costs.
Research product samples: $100 to $200
Scour Amazon's categories and products to identify an existing product that will sell. Look for ones with a Best Sellers Rank between 100 and 6,000 in the high-level category, which means they're selling well but aren't too competitive. For example, this spatula is number 442 in "Kitchen and Dining" and No. 1 in the "Spatula" sub-category.
Then visit the supplier marketplace Alibaba.com to find manufacturers who produce similar products and order samples of the ones you're considering. Most samples cost around $50 or $60, and you shouldn't need more than two or three. You can often request some customization for no extra cost as well. For example, you might ask the supplier to replace a plastic part with a metal one to improve the quality.
Order inventory: $500 to $2,500
Product inventory is your primary cost, which includes expenses required to get the product to the customer. Packaging from the manufacturer will likely cost around 50 cents for a $5 product. If it's coming from somewhere like China, you'll likely need a freight forwarder to handle shipping and customs for a fee. The best warehousing option is Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), where you order a certain number of products from the manufacturer and send them to Amazon upfront. Amazon handles shipping, customer service, and returns in exchange for a percentage from every sale.
We surveyed hundreds of the Amazon business owners we coach and found that they spend an average of $1,200 on these initial inventory costs. Though you can get by with as little as $500, some products may be too expensive or require higher order minimums. If you start with around $2,500, you can comfortably access almost any option.
I'm often asked how this compares to drop shipping, where you forward your orders straight to the manufacturer or other third-party seller for fulfillment. While you don't store the inventory yourself either way, it's night and day otherwise. There's no upfront inventory investment with drop shipping, but you pay higher prices because you aren't buying the product in bulk. You also have little control over the product, customer experience, or delivery, which can take much longer.
Design your branding: $5 to $800
While you can sell your product with the manufacturer's branding, many manufacturers will let you "white label" their product and sell it under your name. Creating your own brand helps you differentiate yourself from the competition and build a business asset you can sell later if you choose.
That means you need to design a logo. If you're on a tight budget, you can hire a freelance graphic designer on Fiverr.com for as low as $5 or $10. I recommend 99designs.com, where you're more likely to find a higher-quality result for around $300.
Manufacturers have generic packaging with their logo, and some may be able to do a little customization for free. For completely custom, high-end packaging design, you'll spend between $300 and $500 on 99designs.
Launch your marketing: $200 to $500
You can usually get by with only a few hundred dollars on upfront marketing. If you want to be more aggressive, you're looking at around $500. Start with Amazon ads, which is typically the most profitable with 20 percent to 30 percent conversion rates. Then you can graduate to Facebook ads, using a coupon offer or discounted promotion to drive traffic to your Amazon listing.
If you're dedicated to moving quickly and selling a product that's light and small, so it doesn't take long to ship, your business can be up and running within a month and a half to three months. If you execute a marketing campaign when you launch, you should be producing a consistent profit within six months.
These are your only upfront expenses because you can then use your profits to invest in more inventory, build your own website, hire staff to manage your social media, and scale in other ways as you grow.
Stay consistent: free
Building a profitable Amazon business requires a lot of learning and waiting — to hear back from suppliers or receive shipments, for example — but it doesn't require a constant grind or long workdays. If you can average an hour or two a day, that's more than enough.
You don't have to be a workaholic driven by blind passion. You don't even have to be passionate at all about the product you're selling. You just need to be consistent and willing to experiment and chip away month after month until you're successful. You can't give up when a supplier messes up your order or someone leaves you a bad review. But as long as you're in it for the long term and willing to work through those things, you already have what it takes.

A financially independent 24-year-old who has built multiple businesses around Amazon explains the 3 different tiers of selling there — including the low-cost strategy anyone can use to start making money online
This story is available exclusively to insider subscribers. become an insider and start reading now..
- Jatin Naran tried a handful of side hustles before he actually started making money doing Amazon FBA.
- Today, he earns money selling products on Amazon but also from brand deals and YouTube ads.
- There are three ways to sell on Amazon, he explains: arbitrage, wholesale, and private label.
After trying several side hustles, from drop-shipping to forex trading, Jatin Naran exhausted his savings.
"I was 20 and in 4,000 pounds of debt," the London-based entrepreneur told Insider about his nearly $5,000 liability. He took out a loan to cover his living expenses and went back to working in IT, a job he'd quit to pursue entrepreneurship. He was also completing his degree in computer science at the time.
A few months later, the Covid pandemic sent everyone into lockdown. Naran's job and classes became remote, which opened up more time in his days to continue experimenting with side hustles. That's when he decided to try selling on Amazon.
He listed his first product at the end of 2020. Over the past nearly three years, he's documented his Amazon journey on social media — including costly mistakes and big wins — and built a following of over one million TikTok users and over 200,000 YouTube subscribers .
Today, at 24, he considers himself financially independent thanks to his various income streams built around Amazon. He earns money selling products on Amazon, from brand deals, affiliate links, and YouTube ads, and through his coaching program. He also recently launched a software, Sourcio , designed to help Amazon sellers find profitable products. Insider looked at screenshots of Naran's accounts detailing his six-figure earnings over the past couple of years.
When it comes to selling on Amazon, there are three different ways to go about it, all with varying costs and time-commitments, explained Naran: "You can start with 'arbitrage' with a few hundred [dollars], then you can move to Amazon wholesale, which is buying in bulk, and then you can move to Amazon private label."
1. Arbitrage
The most basic, low-cost way to start selling on Amazon is retail arbitrage, which is when you source products from different marketplaces to sell. To be profitable, you must buy the product for less than it sells on Amazon. After reselling it, you keep the difference.
Go to local shops or supermarkets and check out the sale aisle, recommended Naran: "Check if those products are selling for higher on Amazon. If they are, just buy them and list them." You could also browse the sale section of online marketplaces, he said.
This is a great way to understand the basics of selling on Amazon. It's hands-on — you're going a step further than reading and learning about the process by actually listing a product and fulfilling orders — but low-cost and low-risk. You only need to buy a few units to start.
2. Wholesaling
The next tier would be wholesaling, which is when you buy products in bulk and resell them on Amazon. This is how Naran started.
Like arbitrage, you aren't building your own product; you're simply reselling an existing product but you're spending more money upfront on inventory.
"It's a bigger investment — $1,000 to $1,500 — but this way you don't have to constantly look for different products," said Naran.
With wholesaling, product selection is fairly simple: You just need to find products that sell really well.
When he was focused on wholesaling, the products he was buying and reselling "would be all over the place," he said. "Tissues, liquid products. You don't really have to focus on a specific category, as long as it sells and you can source it for a cheaper price. That's what makes it great for a newbie in the Amazon world: You don't have to be an expert. You can learn how to look for a product that sells really well, source it, sell it, and then you can keep repeating the process."
The tricky part is finding a supplier who is going to sell you the product at a price that will allow you to make a profit.
"The best way to find a profitable supplier is to approach brands directly," said Naran. "Let's say I want to sell a Vaseline product. I would reach out to Vaseline themselves and open a trade account with them. That cuts out the middleman, which is the wholesaler."
Going directly to the brand allows Naran to get "the cheapest possible price," he said. Plus, if you establish a relationship with the brand, there's room for negotiation down the line. "Later, we'll tell the brand: 'You're currently selling the product at one pound per unit and we're buying 100 units a month. If we buy 1,000 units, can you give a discount?' And usually they will drop it which can increase our margins by 5% or 10%, which is a great jump."
By going through the brand you'll also avoid a mistake Naran made early on: listing a private label product.
When he first started wholesaling, "I ordered my first product from Alibaba, which you're not supposed to do, and I sent that product off to Amazon under a listing thinking it was a wholesale product that you're allowed to sell. Once it reached Amazon, I made around nine sales in the first hour and I'm like, 'Holy crap, I'm going to be the next billionaire!' And then in the next hour I got an IP notice from the seller saying I'm not allowed to sell on this listing because they own the brand."
He lost about 500 pounds ($606) that he'd spent on the inventory he wasn't allowed to sell.
To make sure the product isn't a private label product, look at the listing page for a "buy box" that shows other sellers. If there aren't multiple sellers, "it's likely a private label product," said Naran.
3. Private label
The third tier, starting a private label brand, is the most time-consuming and costly, but has the most upside. It requires actually creating a product, sourcing it from a site like Alibaba, and creating your own brand.
Naran only recently started a private label brand in June 2023.
"The upfront investment is really high," he said, adding that you should expect to spend a $5,000 minimum if you go this route. But it can be more lucrative, he added: "Plus, you're building a brand, which you can actually sell. Whereas with wholesale, you're just buying branded things and re-selling. It's not your product."
It's a bigger time-commitment as well, since there's a bigger learning curve. To succeed, you need to know how to do things like keyword research and ad placement.
"There is so much to learn that it can be overwhelming," said Naran. "I would recommend starting with wholesale, learning how the basics work — finding a product, sending a product to Amazon, getting sales — and once you know that, you can move into private label."

5 Ways to Figure Out What to Sell on Amazon

Published: September 13, 2022
With over 300 million active customers on Amazon, it's no wonder you want to sell a product on the internet's most visited ecommerce website . Fortunately, choosing what to sell on Amazon, and how to sell it, isn't as hard as you might think. In fact, most of your research can be done for free on the site itself.

Top Selling Items on Amazon
First, for inspiration, let's take a look at some of the top-selling products on Amazon.
Amazon itself curates a list of current best-sellers , ranging from toys to books to video games —and the list is updated hourly. Here are some of the top product categories :
1. Home & Kitchen

Given the wide range of products that fall within Home & Kitchen — appliances, furniture, décor, and more — it's no wonder that 32% of sellers on Amazon opt to sell in this category. Plus, it's a pretty booming industry with global retail sales of home and household appliances amounting to $448 billion dollars in 2021.
It's important to note that because Home & Kitchen is so popular it may be more difficult for new sellers to find success in this category. So, if you're considering breaking into this market, make sure you have a product that is high quality and serves a specific niche.
2. Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry

It should be no surprise that Clothing, Shoes, & Jewelry is one of Amazon's top product categories. After all, the ecommerce platform holds a nearly 35% share of all apparel sold online, making it one of the best-selling online fashion retailers. Specifically, Amazon shoppers prefer casual clothing over luxury apparel, with their top brands being Hanes and Amazon Essentials.
It's important to note that this category can get a bit oversaturated, so it's critical you ensure you're able to offer something unique. People don't turn to Amazon for expensive brand items — instead, they look for discounts. So, if you're thinking of selling clothes, shoes, and jewelry, make sure your product is high quality and low price.
3. Electronics

From computers and TVs to surveillance systems and wearable technology, consumers are always looking for the latest in tech — especially when they are online shopping. In fact, almost half of all computer and electronics sales occur online.
Amazon consistently displays impressive prices on some of the world's most popular electronics, so it makes sense that consumers often buy from the platform. This could be a promising category to consider as a third-party seller if you're able to buy electronics in bulk.
4. Beauty & Personal Care

Though the Beauty & Personal Care industry experienced a 15% decrease in global sales in 2020, don't underestimate its significance and resilience. The market bounced back with a revenue increase of nearly $3 billion in 2021 and is expected to continue to grow.
The Beauty & Personal Care category includes everything from makeup and skincare to fragrances and hair products. Even though there is quite a bit of competition in this market with 23% of third-party sellers listing items, those who specialize in creating handmade cosmetics may really excel in this category.
Of course, like anything, the more popular the product category, the more intense the competition. It's important you find your niche to ensure you're not competing with the 300,000 other search results for "white t-shirt."
Before we get to what to sell on Amazon, let's discuss how much it costs.
What does it cost to sell on Amazon?
Amazon offers two selling plans: Professional and Individual. The Professional selling plan costs $39.99 per month, plus per-item selling fees, which vary by category. Alternatively, the Individual selling plan allows you to pay $0.99 per item sold plus other selling fees, which vary by category. The Individual selling plan doesn't have a monthly subscription fee, so if you plan to sell less than 40 items, this is likely the smarter choice.
You'll want to do your research on shipping costs and Amazon seller fees , so you know how much you'll need to spend depending on your item. This information can help you narrow your decision — for instance, a two-to-three pound item will be lightweight and easy to ship, which can help lower your shipping fees.
Along with weight, you'll want to consider products that aren't easily breakable when you're transporting them.
Additionally, most products on Amazon vary between $10 and $50, so you'll want to choose items you can sell for relatively cheap while still making a profit.
How to Know What to Sell on Amazon
Once you've determined you're willing to pay shipping costs — and that your product likely falls within a fair price range — it's time to figure out what you want to sell. Here are five methods that can help you narrow down your search:
1. Manually conduct research on Amazon.com.
To manually research popular products on Amazon, you'll want to start with Amazon's best-selling items in a certain category. From there, you'll start exploring that category's sub-categories and narrow down on a niche.
When you check out Amazon's best-sellers list, you might also look at the "Customers also bought" section to get ideas for similar products.
Once you make a list of items, check Google keyword planner to see whether those products have search volume, which indicates a level of demand. Alternatively, you could use Sellerapp's product intelligence tool specifically for Amazon. Sellerapp offers a seven-day free trial, which allows you to begin investigating popular products on Amazon via keywords to further narrow your list.
2. Use a Chrome extension to research products in a niche market.
There are two popular Chrome extensions to help you conduct keyword research on Amazon: Jungle Scout and Unicorn Smasher.
Jungle Scout shows you monthly sales volumes on products and displays products with low competition. It allows you to save products to track them over time. Undoubtedly, Jungle Scout's analytics can help you quickly and efficiently narrow down on a product or an industry in which you could excel. However, Jungle Scout is relatively pricey, particularly if you're just starting out.
Unicorn Smasher is Jungle Scout's free alternative. While the data isn't as accurate as Jungle Scout, and it lacks some of Jungle Scout's sophisticated features, it's nonetheless a helpful free option to gather estimated monthly sales and estimated monthly sales revenue for Amazon products.
Some other popular product research extensions include:
- FBA Calculator by AMZScout
- Amazon Keyword Tool by SellerApp
3. Find a gap in the market.
You can find gaps by using one of the previously mentioned Chrome extensions to research products with high monthly sales volume and low competition. However, you might also come across a gap on Amazon through a simple organic search.
For instance, when I search "perfume" there are over 30,000 results, but when I search "natural vegan amber perfume" there are only 247.
This is a simplified example, but sometimes you need to narrow down your product search to find a place to make an impact on Amazon. Plenty of people are already selling perfume, but there might be a certain scent, style, or feature that is missing on the site.

Alternatively, you can find a gap in the market by reading customer reviews in your product market niche. Even if there are plenty of products similar to yours already, you might find that customers are unsatisfied with the current brands and want something you can provide.
4. Find products that don't have too much competition.
If you're trying to sell a product that currently has 100,000 search results, it's likely going to be very difficult to stand out against the competition and achieve the sales you want. Fortunately, it's relatively easy to find a niche within a larger market that has less competition, which ensures your product is more easily found by searchers. Best of all, those searchers are likely more willing to buy your product, since they needed to search for a more specific keyword.
For instance, let's say you want to sell cookbooks. The search term "Cookbooks" has over 70,000 results.
Alternatively, the search term "Cookbooks for instant pot cooking" has only 3,000 results. Not only is your product more likely to become a best-seller in this category, but it's a more targeted keyword. If someone searches "Cookbooks" they could mean anything from "Kids cookbooks" to "Holiday cookbooks." If someone searches "Cookbooks for instant pot cooking," however, they're more likely to be satisfied with your product.
5. Search for categories with at least three results with Best Sellers Rank (BSR).
Amazon's Best Sellers Rank (BSR) reflects both recent and historical sales of an item. A high BSR indicates that the product is in-demand, which is critical to know as a seller.
If you find just one product in a category with a high BSR, and none of the other items are best-sellers, it could be an indication that a single product is dominating the market. Instead, you want to target product categories that feature multiple items with a high BSR because it signifies demand in that area and allows room for your product to succeed.
For instance, let's say you want to sell sports products, but you find "basketball" has only one item with a high BSR. However, upon further research, you find "football" as a category has multiple best-selling products on the first page.
As a new seller, I would prioritize selling footballs over basketballs since this research demonstrates a user's willingness to peruse different footballs before purchasing one.

What to Sell on Amazon
Undoubtedly, you can obtain an impressive profit from selling products on Amazon, but it's critical you're able to offer unique, budget-friendly products with minimal competition to truly succeed on the site.
Over-saturation on the platform proves it's more difficult than ever to stand out, so it's not smart to sell on Amazon for the sake of selling on Amazon . Instead, you want to ensure you're truly able to offer something of value.
If you have a product in mind, follow the tips above to refine your strategy and find a niche segment within a larger demographic. If you don't have a product in mind, start with the basics: what are the most-searched keywords on Amazon, and which products are most successful?
Once you have a list based on keyword research, consider similar products the user might find more compelling or useful than the ones currently listed on Amazon.

In fact, Amazon has over 300 million active customers. When you use a popular shopping site like Amazon, there is no limit to the number of people you can reach.
In this post, we will share with you the most popular categories on Amazon and give you examples of easy products to source and sell.

So, how do you choose the right stuff to sell on Amazon ? With a bit of research and preparation, of course! Let’s take a look at the best items to sell on Amazon.
Understanding Ecommerce Niche Markets
Before you start putting items on Amazon to sell, you have to choose the right niche products to market within each category.
For example, if you focus your Amazon product sales on health and wellness, check out the latest trending niches on the best seller lists and consider selling these items. If you want a solid product in the health and wellness niche, look at eye compresses. These must-have beauty items have been flying off the shelves, and you can get in on the action, too.
To come up with the best ecommerce business ideas , do your keyword research . You can even use third-party product research tools such as Jungle Scout or AMZScout. This way, you won’t waste your time focusing on a product market niche that just doesn’t sell on Amazon.
Choosing The Right Amazon Product Category
Amazon sells a lot of products doesn’t mean anything you list for sale on the website will sell The first step is to choose the right product category. As new sellers, you should know you don’t want to sell products that, well, don’t sell.
When you’re in the process of choosing a product category for Amazon selling, consider the following:
- The popularity of the products

- Profitability
- Availability of products to sell
- Trendsetting product or tried-and-true product
- Low competition
You can’t just pick a product out of the blue and start selling it. Not if you want to be a successful Amazon seller.
You have to do thorough product research to pick profitable products. Some areas, like the jewelry category, will have too much competition for you to be able to achieve sustainable growth for your ecommerce business. As you conduct your research, pay attention to the best sellers’ rank and look for categories with minimal competition.

Other Considerations With Products to Sell Online
Now that you know the best Amazon products to sell, you can narrow down the options by considering other factors, including:
Price Point
As you consider what products to sell on Amazon, the price point is an essential factor. You don’t just want your products to be popular, but you want it to be worthwhile to sell these products. If you don’t get a good profit from the sale, the work of sourcing, packing, and shipping may not yield the best outcome.
Do some research and figure out how much it will cost to buy the products at wholesale prices. You can use Alibaba or even see what items go for on eBay . Then, figure out your selling price based on what it costs to sell on Amazon. You want a price that people will pay but also have to make sure that you can earn a profit.
If you can buy and sell the products and make a good profit, these items may be worth adding to your Amazon site. On the other hand, if the profits you make don’t make it worth while to offer these items, it’s best to sell other products that will produce a good profit.
When you consider different products to sell through your Amazon store, think about the size of the products. The larger the item, the more time and cost it will take to package and ship it.
If you sell lightweight items, packing and shipping are less timely. Plus, shipping costs will often be less. However, with larger items, the price points may be greater, and you may earn a better income on these sales in some cases.
Competition
In general, you should avoid product markets dominated by big brands.
Avoid Seasonal Items
Seasonal items may sell during the individual season or holiday time. However, if you don’t sell them during that time, you’ll be stuck with inventory to hold until next year. Seasonal items are popular, but they could be a wrong financial move for you if you have too many and they just don’t sell fast.
Amazon FAQs
How to choose the best product to sell on amazon, pick high demand products.
Even if the products aren’t overly trending at the moment, make sure the items are high in demand. You should choose a product that people want to buy and then show them that your store is the one to buy it from.
Choose a Specialized Niche
With high in-demand products and trending items, you’ll face a lot of competition. That’s why you need to choose a specialized niche.
When you focus on a specific niche, you can still sell trending items but make yours stand out from the rest. In addition, you’ll build a loyal following amongst Amazon buyers that get to know your online store and the products you offer.
Check Out Product Reviews
If you want to sell products that are high in demand and have a loyal following, check out product reviews on items you want to sell. Use keywords to zone in on the specific products. By reading customer reviews, you can see how long these products have been on the Amazon market and how well they do. You can also learn more about the individual products, what buyers like about the product, and what they don’t.
How To Find Trending Products
To help you narrow down the options even more and pick the best products to sell on Amazon, find out what’s trending . You can check out Amazon’s bestseller list. You can also look at Google trends. Products from retail stores that are trending at the moment will likely be high in demand, no matter how many Amazon sellers offer them.
What Business Model Should I Use On Amazon?
When it comes to selling on Amazon, you have a few business models to choose from. The most popular models are Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) and Merchant Fulfillment (MF). Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it’s important to do your research before deciding which one is best for you.
FBA allows you to store your products in Amazon’s fulfillment centers, and they handle the shipping and customer service for you. This can save you time and effort, but there are fees associated with FBA that can eat into your profits.
Dropshipping
If you choose a dropshipping strategy, you don’t have to worry about storing inventory. Instead, when a customer orders a product through your website, the information goes to your supplier, who fills the order for you. These items are usually generic products as opposed to brand items.
This product sourcing model is an excellent option if you don’t have much money to spend at the start of your Amazon business . You don’t have to buy inventory outright and can distribute products as orders come in.
Plus, with a dropshipping model, you don’t have any storage responsibilities, either.
Creating Your Own Brand with Private Label Products
With a private label setup, your products have your brand name on them. That’s the biggest advantage of selling private label products. These products are items you design yourself and order straight from the manufacturer.
You buy these products in bulk, and you’re responsible for packing and shipping the products when you sell them. Private label products are good items to consider if you want to put your name on something. Plus, the products often gather a large, loyal following.
With wholesale product sourcing, you buy the products in bulk from wholesale companies, such as Alibaba. You’ll get a great deal when you source your products this way. However, if you choose a wholesale model setup, you must initially prepare to have a lot of capital.
If you want Amazon to handle part of the fulfillment duties, the Amazon FBA model is a good one to look into. With Amazon FBA , you send your products to Amazon, who will store your inventory in their warehouses.
Amazon will also handle the quality logistics and ship your products for you. All you have to do is source your products and manage the marketing details. Just keep in mind there may be specific criteria to follow with Amazon FBA.
Stock Up on Amazon Best Products Today
Whether you’re new to online selling through Amazon or want to add some new items to your product list, any of the items listed above are good options to start with. Then, build your Amazon site product inventory and start earning the profits you crave through Amazon selling.
You can start with a few of the best products and expand from there. Or you can stock a few products from each section to gauge how your products sell and what your customer base looks like.
Whatever you do, always keep up with your product research as the consumer market can change. With this in mind, know that popular products in the past may not be so now. Instead, these products may be replaced with bigger and better products to sell on Amazon.

How to Start an Amazon Business in 5 Simple Steps
Online marketplaces like Amazon have made it easier than ever to selling products online. As soon as you sign up, you have access to millions of customers.
This guide covers everything you need to know about starting an Amazon business. Here’s how to take your first steps.
5 Steps to Start an Amazon Business
Follow our simple steps below to start your Amazon business today:
- Create an Amazon seller account
- Choose your first product
- Source your product
- List your products
- Start selling

The Easy Parts of Starting an Amazon Business
Starting an Amazon business has never been easier. First, you’ll need an Amazon seller account, which almost anyone can set up with just a few pieces of information. Next, you’ll need a bank account, government-issued identification, chargeable credit card, phone number, and tax information.
The entire process of setting up the seller account is very intuitive. You’ll receive prompts along the way, so all you need to do is enter the correct information. You also don’t need to worry about creating an ecommerce website to sell on Amazon.
You’ll get an online storefront with your Amazon seller account.
Equally, finding potentially profitable products to sell on Amazon shouldn’t be hard. You can use a sales analytics tool like Jungle Scout to determine the best products to sell. The tool also helps you analyze the profit potential for your chosen products.

Finally, you don’t need to deal with the headache of fulfilling orders yourself if you don’t want to. The Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) program picks, packs, and ships products on your behalf. Amazon will even handle customer service for your products so that you can focus on other essential business functions.
The Difficult Parts of Starting an Amazon Business
Setting up an Amazon business is very accessible. But generating enough sales to ensure cash flow can be a challenge. This problem is compounded by the fact that Amazon pays out every two weeks. In addition, Amazon’s payout system can make it difficult to maintain inventory if you rely on your sales to cover the cost.
Another potential challenge of an Amazon business is the competition. There are more than eight million sellers on the Amazon marketplace. The stiff competition can make it difficult to penetrate the market.
Additionally, this competition often leads to price wars. You may even encounter competition willing to sell at a loss just to gather customer reviews. These sellers later raise their prices. It’s a poor strategy that doesn’t work and only undermines the marketplace.
Finally, starting an Amazon business means that you are at the mercy of the brand. Amazon keeps a tight rein on sellers, which is mostly a good thing for merchants and customers. But you may unwittingly break the company’s rules and get your account suspended.
Amazon can also change its rules and policies at any time, and there’s nothing you can do about it.
Starting an Amazon business is still worth it despite all this. So if you’re ready to leap, here’s how to go about setting up an Amazon business.
Step 1 – Create An Amazon Seller Account
You’ll need a seller account to sell any products on Amazon. However, the registration process is super simple, and you can get set up in just a few minutes.
Choose Your Plan
Amazon offers two plans, the Individual plan, and the Professional plan. We highly recommend the latter. The Individual plan charges per sale, while the Professional plan attracts a flat monthly fee, regardless of how much you sell.
So it makes more financial sense if you’re starting an Amazon business.
The Individual plan costs $0.99 per sale. The Professional plan costs $39.99 per year.
Aside from the lower selling fee, the Professional plan allows you to:
- Use on-site advertising tools
- Run promotions such as free shipping
- Add multiple users to your Amazon account
- Use API integration to increase selling efficiency
- Create bulk listings
Register Your Account
The registration process is pretty simple. Just enter the requested information in each step. For example, you’ll be asked for identification, a bank account number and routing number, and your credit card information.
Step 2 – Choose Your First Product
Picking your first product is the immediate challenge you’ll run into when starting an Amazon business. There is an infinite product range to choose from but only a handful have the profit potential to make the venture worthwhile.
So, think carefully about your first product, as it could make or break your business.
Sign Up For Jungle Scout
Jungle Scout is a must-have for Amazon sellers. This sales analytics tool helps ensure that you don’t choose your first product blindly. Instead, you’ll have all the critical data you need to make an informed decision about what to sell.
Jungle Scout offers three pricing plans. These include:
- Basic – Costs $29 per month
- Suite – Costs $49 per month
- Professional – Costs $84 per month

The Basic plan is enough to get you started, but we highly recommend the Suite plan. The reason is that the Basic plan can slow your progress. For example, the Opportunity Finder feature is limited to three searches per day. But you get unlimited searches by jumping up to the Suite plan.
Similarly, the Keyword Scout, Product Database, and Supplier Database are limited to three daily searches with the Basic plan. Again, you can get unlimited search on all these features with the Suite plan. You can still go with the Basic plan if you are okay with the limitations. It is still an excellent option if you are patient.
Search for Your First Product
You can now use Jungle Scout’s catalog of more than 475 million Amazon products. You’ll find the Product Database feature on the navigation menu, on the left-hand side of your screen. It will be under Product Research.

Next, select your preferred product category. Then, filter the results according to your most important factors, such as price range, sales rank, net price, reviews, revenue, and rating.

Jungle Scout also lets you see potential products depending on minimum and maximum revenue. For example, you can set your desired income between $4000 and $7000 per month. Jungle Scout will show you the products that make that kind of monthly revenue.
Choose Your Product
Jungle Scout is an excellent tool for exploring potential products. First, make a list of all the products that meet your criteria. Then, pick the one you are most passionate about. It’s hard to sell a product you don’t know anything about. In any case, customers may be looking for you to offer advice or solutions with your products.
The other thing you need to watch out for is competition. The Amazon marketplace is already saturated with merchants. So you want to give yourself a good chance to penetrate an already crowded market.
To this end, stay away from products that Amazon itself sells. They’ll beat you on price every time.
Fortunately, Jungle Scout lets you see which products Amazon sells. Simply apply the Seller Type filter to get this information. You can also see which other products vendors in your category are selling.

Finally, watch out for seasonal products. You want products that sell reliably throughout the year. Seasonal products decrease the consistency of your month-over-month sales. They also limit your profitable months. Cash flow is likely to be an issue, especially in the beginning. So choose a product you can count on to bring consistent sales.
Step 3 – Source Your Product
Finding a product to sell is only one piece of the puzzle. Now you need to figure out where to get it. Fortunately, this step shouldn’t be so difficult.
Search Suppliers With Jungle Scout
You may want to start with a domestic supplier when getting started with your Amazon business. This route might even be cheaper than international suppliers at this stage of your business. You can also get products to your customers faster, and you don’t have to deal with the complexity of international suppliers.
Jungle Scout can also help you find suppliers. The tool has a database of global suppliers, complete with confirmed shipments and customer volumes. Jungle Scout also enables you to find niche suppliers and ones that can fulfill small order quantities.

Figure Out Shipping
You’ll also need to figure out how to get products to your customers. The first option is to do it yourself. This option is known as merchant-fulfilled in Amazon circles. Here, you’ll have to store and ship your own products.
Additionally, the customer chooses the delivery timeframe. You’ll be expected to ship the product based on this timeframe.
Alternatively, you can choose Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA). With this option, you send your inventory to Amazon. The company scans your products and makes them available for sale. Then, Amazon packages and ships your products directly to customers.
The service also collects payment on your behalf and even handles customer service.
The latter option is more attractive but it can take some time to set up. FBA may also not be an option to many new sellers who don’t have a track record for high turnover. Either way, it’s an option worth exploring for your Amazon business.

One last thing to think about is the product size. Ideally, your products should be easy to handle and ship. You may want to stay away from fragile items, especially for a new business. Think about starting with things small and light to lower shipping costs.
Get Product Samples
Be sure to ask for product samples before committing to a supplier. Product samples are inexpensive and will confirm that you are selling high-quality items.
If you qualify for FBA, consider having your supplier ship the products directly to Amazon’s warehouse
Step 4 – List Your Products
It’s time to put your products up for sale. Listing your products on Amazon makes them immediately available for purchase. Amazon offers a broad audience, so there’s a good chance of creating a profitable business–but it still takes work.
List Your Products
Go to Seller Central > Inventory > Add an Item . Although Amazon offers the option to list your products in bulk, we recommend doing so individually. You’ll be able to get a detailed look and an intimate understanding of the products you are selling this way, which is crucial for a new business.
You’ll be required to enter three pieces of information: the price, item quantity, and its condition. Then you’ll upload high-quality pictures of your product.
If you don’t have good images from your supplier, take the time to use the samples you ordered to take photos from multiple angles and in different lighting.
Price Your Products
The first consideration when pricing your product is your desired profit margin. To this end, consider all your expenses. Don’t forget to include FBA fees, Amazon referral fees, storage fees, and all other costs you incurred.
You should be aiming for a profit margin between 25% and 30% to make your business worthwhile.
You can use Jungle Scout to see your product’s average sale price on Amazon. Then, you can use that number to determine your maximum price. Finally, consider your minimum price. This figure should be the amount you need to break even after factoring in all your costs.

Step 5 – Start Selling
You’re now ready to launch your Amazon business and start selling. However, there’s still some work to do to increase your chances of running a successful business.
Think About Branding
Many manufacturers offer white-label opportunities. This means that you can have the products branded with your logo or label. This is an excellent opportunity to set yourself apart from the competition.
Consider also branding the packaging with your logo. Again, many manufacturers offer this flexibility for little or no extra cost.
Market Your Business
The best place to start marketing your Amazon business is with Amazon ads . They offer decent conversion rates. It’s okay if you don’t have a lot of money to spend on advertising. Start small and scale your ad campaigns as your business and revenue grows.
Other advertising opportunities to look into include Pay Per Click (PPC) campaigns and social media advertising. You could also build up a blog and feature your Amazon products within it, Hubspot has a great free blog tool to get started.
Gather Product Reviews
Product reviews are a great way to build your credibility in the Amazon marketplace. You can include product inserts politely asking customers to review your products or include it in the email confirmation when people order. But you may need to figure out how to make leaving reviews worthwhile to your customers, such as offering a small discount on a future purchase.
You can also use social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to request product reviews from users.

By fostering a culture of innovation among our global employees. At Amazon, innovation doesn’t take place during a moment in time—like a hackathon or an incubator—it takes place as part of everyday work.
Our guiding principles lead us in innovating for customers.
Customer obsession is where we get our energy from… wanting to do the best for our customers. At every meeting and in the midst of every decision we make, one important person is not present: our customer. We have to vigorously advocate for him/her and earn their trust—and this drives our ambition to constantly improve the customer’s experience.
A passion for invention is what drives us. We love to invent for our customers. We are externally aware, looking for new ideas from everywhere, and are not limited by “not invented here.” As we do new things, we accept that we may be misunderstood for long periods of time and may not always succeed the first time.
Long-term thinking is a core value cemented in Amazon’s history since our inception. We invest for the long term and continually refine and improve our offerings based on customer feedback. Our business today is evidence of this—some of our most successful business areas like Amazon Prime and Amazon Web Services launched many years ago. We always keep our focus on the long term value we can provide customers.
To mark our inclusion on Fast Company’s inaugural “ Best Workplaces for Innovators ” list, we’re taking a look at some of reasons Amazon is a great workplace for inventors.
- TABLE OF CONTENTS Empowering innovators from every level and every team
- Empowering innovators from every level and every team
- Thinking long term and embracing failure
- Making decisions based on “one-way doors” and “two-way doors”
- Supporting internal mobility
- Fostering creativity
- Cultivating the next generation of innovators
Amazonians aren’t just encouraged to come up with the next big idea; they are empowered to seek out problems and build new solutions. This shows up everywhere from our customer service centers to the halls of our corporate offices. For example, when an Amazonian, at any level of the company, has a big idea, they start by writing a working backwards plan—called a “PRFAQ” with a press release that outlines the vision for a product at launch, an FAQ that explains the customer benefits, and answers theoretical customer questions. Our teams continually evaluate the idea throughout the concept’s evolution by sharing the PRFAQ with other innovators at Amazon. Once "baked," many of these ideas get funding and launch, and some have become programs that our customers love—including Prime Now , Amazon Go , and Alexa . Anyone can write a working backwards plan, whether it’s related to their job or not.
To be truly focused on innovation, a company has to think long-term, and be comfortable taking calculated risks—which sometimes fail. Amazonians pilot, test, and try new products and services regularly—some succeed to great degrees, others fail and fold—but lessons learned set the stage for the next big idea. We consider Amazon “the best place in the world to fail.” Amazonians understand that if they aren’t pushing boundaries and taking risks, they aren’t innovating. To invent you have to experiment, and if you know in advance that it's going to work, it's not an experiment. Most large organizations embrace the idea of invention, but are not willing to suffer the string of failed experiments necessary to get there.
Most companies make high-quality decisions, but do so at the cost of speed. Amazonians focus on making both high-quality and high-velocity decisions. To encourage this, Amazon talks about the importance of recognizing the difference between one- and two-way doors—or the difference between a reversible and an irreversible decision. Understanding this distinction fosters a culture of experimentation. Amazonians are comfortable trying new things, if they can agree that, in the case it doesn’t work out, the decision can be scaled back without a negative customer impact. At Amazon, we believe that most decisions are in fact two-way doors—they are changeable, reversible. If something doesn’t quite work, you don't have to live with the consequences for that long. You can reopen the door and go back through.
Amazon is a company of many startups, with teams and businesses diving into new customer creations around every corner—and we encourage employees to take advantage of the career opportunities this provides. Our Leadership Principle “Hire and Develop the Best” reminds managers to recognize exceptional talent and move them throughout the organization. Investing in broadening employee skill sets fundamentally breeds big thinking and best practice sharing. In fact, in 2018, more than 10,000 Amazonians moved internally to different businesses. Employees are empowered to chase their big ideas, sometimes by taking on, or even creating, a new role.
To keep thinking big and bringing new ideas to the table, Amazon recognizes that creativity and innovation go hand in hand. From the company’s Expressions Lab, which provides employees with opportunities to attend art workshops and creative classes, to the Amazon Symphony Orchestra, a nearly 100 member symphony orchestra comprised of employees who perform multiple times a year for the community, Amazonians have endless opportunities to keep their creative juices flowing. And, for Seattle employees (as well as locals and visitors), The Spheres provide a one-of-a kind opportunity to be in an urban center while keeping a direct link to nature. Employees can work or have meetings among more than 40,000 plants from over 30 countries, fostering creative thinking through connections with nature.
Having a focus on innovation means thinking beyond today. That’s why Amazon is working to help children and young adults have access to the resources and skills they need to be tomorrow’s inventors. With the Amazon Future Engineer program, the company is committed to expanding computer science education access for more than 10 million students from the start of their academic careers all the way through college, each year. The goal is to ensure more students have the chance to pursue some of the great opportunities that an understanding of computer science affords, so they can grow up to be the future generation of innovators within the healthcare field, arts, education, tech, and beyond.
Learn more about the list , and what makes Amazon such an innovative workplace .
Innovation is in our DNA, so we’re excited to be named a Best Workplace for Innovators by @FastCompany . Thanks to all the builders at Amazon who create great experiences for customers! #FCBestWorkplaces https://t.co/ySwCBlNBLV pic.twitter.com/vX4Msg7nMs — Amazon News (@amazonnews) August 5, 2019

Jeff Bezos, After Founding Amazon in a Seattle Garage Three Decades Ago, Packs His Bags for Miami

NEW YORK (AP) — Jeff Bezos is leaving Seattle, where the billionaire founded Amazon out of a garage nearly three decades ago.
In a Thursday night Instagram post, the 59-year-old Bezos announced plans to return to Miami — where he spent his high school years — to be closer to his parents and his partner, Lauren Sánchez.
Bezos stepped down as the CEO of Amazon, still based in Seattle, almost three years ago and said in his social media post that operations for his rocket company, Blue Origin, are “increasingly shifting” to Cape Canaveral. Miami is about 200 miles south of Cape Canaveral.
“As exciting as the move is, it’s an emotional decision for me,” Bezos wrote Thursday, noting that he's lived in Seattle longer than he's lived anywhere else.
Seattle has been Bezos' home since 1994, when he started Amazon out of his garage. Thursday's Instagram post includes a brief video tour led by Bezos of Amazon's first, humble office, with his father behind the camera.
Political Cartoons

“It doesn’t take long to tour the offices of Amazon-dot-com Inc," a young Bezos says in the video, pointing to his desk, a fax machine, and a long orange extension cord that was needed to supply the room with additional power.
Bezos, one of the wealthiest people in the world today, has lavish properties in Miami, which has already attracted some other big names in tech over recent years. Last month, Bloomberg News reported that Bezos had purchased a mansion in South Florida 's “Billionaire Bunker” for $79 million, just two months after buying a neighboring estate for $68 million.
Both mansions are in Indian Creek, an exclusive man-made barrier island in Miami. Celebrity neighbors include Tom Brady, Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner.
Bezos stepped down as CEO of Amazon in early 2021, citing the desire to devote more time to philanthropy and other projects. But Bezos still has broad influence over Amazon as executive chair and the company's biggest shareholder.
