Day 1: SNOW DAY – CLASS CANCELED
Day 2: Using 18 x 24″ drawing paper and either charcoal or graphite, draw a baseline self portrait. This assignment will be graded on perceived effort and by perceived effort, at least an hour to two hours with of work.
An example:

Sketchbook Assignment #1 : 100 schematic or gestural figurative thumbnail sketches (each sketch takes at least 30 – 60 seconds and no more)
Reading Assignment : ABOUT READING ASSIGNMENTS: IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU READ THE NEXT WEEK’S CHAPTER PRIOR TO THAT WEEK. Chapter 1 and 1st handout “Learning to See Form” and Week 2’s readings as well. These readings will be uploaded by Friday, 1/14.
Day 3: No Homework Assigned – Continue to work in your sketchbook and complete Week 1 & 2 Readings
Day 4: Using 18×24″ drawing paper, draw a geometric study of a human figure (preferably nude). NOTE: Remember that a live drawing opportunity exists on Sundays from 7-10 pm. Begin the study with breaking down the figure into simplest geometric form – the cube/box. Use that as the pentimenti study, from that develop a planar analysis of the figure – training yourself to observe the plane breaks that define the underlying structure (under the skin). Finally wrap an organic contour line, being selective about your use of line weight around the figure. If you cannot find an opportunity to use a nude model, use a clothed model but remember that this drawing will be from observation.

Sketchbook Assignment #2 : Draw six (6) schematic, geometric studies of parts of the human form – i.e. lower leg, ankle, & foot combination; shoulder, arm, & hand combination; abdomen, pelvis, & upper leg; upper & lower leg; arm, hand, & fingers; head, neck, & shoulder, etc…
Reading Assignment : Links for the reading assignments are located on the “Readings” page.
Using 18″x24″ drawing paper (80-100lb) and graphite/pen/conte’ crayon create a gesture drawing from observing a figure. Utilize the geometric structure to help get your proportions and scale correct (pentimenti) and finally observe the outer edges of the forms of the body by applying a planar line analysis (angle contour). Be selective of your line and mark-making, determining your use of line weight to emphasize the form and to establish volume.

Sketchbook Assignment #3 : Complete thirty (30) gesture thumbnails of the figure spending no more than 1 minute per drawing. Put only 2-3 drawings per page of sketchbook, you can use both sides of the page. Medium: pen, graphite, or conte’ crayon.
Reading Assignment : No Reading Assignment, study readings Chapter 1 & 2, and all uploaded readings up to this week (“Learning to See Form”, “Basic Forms”, “The Cube”, “The Cylinder”, and “Action & Gesture”.
No Homework assigned for Week 4 – please study for test and we will, have an informal critique for homework assigned Week 3.
No Sketchbook homework assignment Week 4 (books collected for first sketchbook review, books will be returned on 3/8)
Reading Assignment : Reading Chapter 5 & “Value Basics”
Drawing Homework: Using a sheet of 18″x24″ drawing paper (80-100lb), and charcoal or HB (+) , create a proportional grid (equal grid based on a minimum unit of measure – we’ve been using the model’s head – lightly placed and observable in the finished drawing as the under drawing (pentimenti)). Once you have created the grid, using gesture place the figure into the picture plan considering the use of the figure & the relationship of figure & ground in creating your composition. Next step is to use (charcoal is the best or a chuck of soft graphite) to mass gesture the figure, searching for the most economical strokes to underscore the weight of the figure in space. Finally using charcoal and/or graphite emphasize the outer edges of the figure’s form using line. Keep in mind the quality of your line, line weight and line techniques, i.e. hatching/contour/implied line, etc.

Sketchbook Assignment 4 : Using the grid again, create a 5×6 proportionate grid in graphite (lightly. Using charcoal, mass in the weight of a combination of body forms (as you did with the planar analysis), i.e. the hand & wrist, the ankle & foot, the face & ear, the head & neck, the shoulder and upper pectoral (chest), the shoulder and upper arm; the upper leg & knee…..or details of smaller groups, i.e. hand & fingers. You can use no less than three, which means that you can do one combination twice…..

Reading Assignment : Chapter 3 and the handout, “General Proportions of the Human Body”
Homework: Please redo your grid figure drawing and submit both for grade on Tuesday, February 22. Please base your “redo’s” on our critique discussion in class.
Sketchbook Assignment : Finish the sketchbook assignment from last week. These sketchbooks are important tools for self-discovery and improvement.
Reading Assignment : Read Chapter 6, pg 112-139, and “Skeletal Landmarks”
Homework: Using a sheet of 18″x24″ drawing paper (80-100lb), and charcoal or HB (+) , draw a composition that has a whole human form (a model) and a anatomical human form (the skeleton) in similar poses, preferably next to each other. The objective of this exercise is to emphasize the structure under the form that supports the human body and to pay particular attention to the skeletal landmarks that help us proportionally place elements of the human figure. Examples below:

Sketchbook Assignment 5: Draw in your sketchbook at least 6-12 anatomical studies from the skeleton of the human form; i.e, pelvis, lower limps, hands & wrists, etc.
Reading Assignment : Anatomy Study Guide & Anatomical & Skeletal Landmarks Vocabulary
There is no official homework assigned this week other than to finish your work for the midterm portfolio. Please check the Portfolio page for the information and expectations.
Sketchbook Assignment : Your second sketchbook review will take place midterm week. Be sure that you indicate that you’ve spent at least 15 minutes a day or 1.5-2 hours working in your sketchbook developing your observational and technical skills. Be sure that you catch up on all the assignments.
Reading Assignment : Study all reading materials and your anatomy notes for the second quiz. This will be given on March 10th.
Midterm Week. Portfolios are to be delivered at my studio by 12 noon on Thursday, March 10th. You can bring your sketchbooks in to class that day. Your midterm quiz will be given in the beginning of class.
SPRING BREAK
Homework: Using a sheet of 18″x24″ drawing paper (80-100lb), and charcoal or HB (+) , draw two (2) drawings. First drawing will be a compositional arrangement of studies of hands and feet (1 single hand or foot and 2 studies of both hands or feet) for a total of 3 hand poses and 3 feet poses. The key to success on this drawing is your accuracy of the subject matter and creativity in composing the study arrangement. The second drawing will be of the human figure with a compositional emphasis on the hands and feet as part of the human figure. Success in this is based on how well you understand the importance that the hands and feet have on capturing the individualness and life of the human figure. Examples below.

Sketchbook Assignment 6 : Draw 6-12 studies of the human hand & foot using techniques and materials learned in class. Be sure that you also address the anatomical aspects as well – at least one skeletal view for the hand and for the foot.
Reading Assignment : Read “Tips on Drawing the Hands & Feet” handout from class. I will upload other readings this week, please check the “Readings” page.
Homework: Using a sheet of 18″x24″ drawing paper (80-100lb), charcoal or HB (+) graphite , complete a figure drawing emphasizing the face OR draw a portrait of someone you know (from life) as a bust or full figure. Examples below.

Sketchbook Assignment #6 : Draw at least three (3) – six (6) studies of the details of the human face – ears, nose, mouth, and eyes. Include as much supporting anatomical references to give clarity and proportion to the aspects of the human face.
Reading Assignment : Handout and chapters from the textbook.
Homework: Using a sheet of 18″x24″ drawing paper (80-100lb), charcoal or HB (+) graphite , complete a line and value drawing of one of the two statues located at Tillman Hall. Choose either the Winged Victory (Nike) or Athena. Identify the edges of the “figure” with contour line or implied line using the quality of mark making and line weight to add emphasis to your drawing. Pay attention to the composition as you set up the drawing and use value (charcoal or graphite) to create a tonal representation that indicates the three dimensionality of the statue in its environment. Example below.

Sketchbook Assignment #7 : Sketch out three different views using contour or implied line (or both) of the other statue. If you choose Nike for the homework drawing then choose Athena for the sketchbook assignment or visa versa.

1. Using your drawing paper 18×24″, draw a dynamic composition combining the five (5) sketchbook drawing studies you created into one composition.
2. Use a variety of line, line weight, and medium (graphite, charcoal, pen/marker (black) to describe volume and value.
3. Be particularly aware of your composition using organizational lines to organize your picture place.
4. Keep in mind the use of positive and negative space as well as scale and proportion in the relationships created between “each” bag.
5. We will have a critique on Tuesday 9/14. Be sure that you print of the Critique Forms for this critique.

Final Critique 9/30
Drawing: There are two types of gesture drawings due for final critique on Thu. 9/30. Please draw each on 18″x24″ drawing paper.
1. Using contour line and mass gesture either create a multiple object still life or use the one that has been reserved in the classroom for your use. The medium for this drawing is either charcoal or conte’ crayon. Remember to organize your composition – best ways: use your viewfinder and/or organizational lines. Remember, as always, to sight the objects in your composition and determine their relationship to each other and to the picture plane, observing positive & negative space.
2. Using mass and scribble or line gesture and contour create a composition from the landscape around the campus. Use ink washes (brush and ink in water-starting lightly with a larger water to ink ratio and adding ink to darken the wash) to describe the mass gesture and pen & ink OR charcoal to draw the gesture and contour line.

Drawing: Draw a baseline intuitive perspective drawing of an indoor and outdoor environment that includes 1 or 2 point perspective. Do not use measuring tools, sketch out what you see as you see it. Use graphite 4B-8B.
Sketchbook Assignment: Complete the 1-point perspective (3D form) studies.
Textbook pp 235-278 (Chapters 15 & 16)
Homework is due on Tuesday 10/11. Bring materials for drawing in perspective: t-square or ruler & triangle, 2H or drafting pencil; erasers; drawing board; drawing paper; and bull clips or tape AND if you want something comfortable to sit the floor bring a pillow or pad.

MID TERM PORTFOLIOS ARE DUE Friday, 10/15 no later than 10 am. You may turn them any time before that date & time. No late portfolios will be accepted. You may leave your portfolio outside my office/studio door.
Quiz #2 is on Tuesday 10/19. This quiz covers one-point perspective and light, value, and shadow lecture. It also includes textbook readings. There will be no class after the test. Sketchbooks will be collected for the 2nd Sketchbook Review grade. Midterm grades and portfolios will be returned on Thursday 10/21.
Drawing: Draw an intuitive 2-pt perspective drawing on 18×24″ drawing paper using HB-8B graphite pencil. This can be an interior or exterior orientation drawing. This drawing will be attached to one of your two 2-point perspective drawings you will complete.
Sketchbook Assignment: Work on sketchbook for 2nd Sketchbook Review. Sketchbooks will be collected on 10/19.

This is a contour and value drawing. Please ensure the quality and craftsmanship of the final drawings reflects accurately and creatively your understanding of the subject matter.
Sketchbook Assignment: Complete the ellipses and 2-point perspective (3D form) studies. Do not forget to identify a single light source.

Reading Assignment: No reading assignment this week.
Drawing: Subtractive Drawing: Create a composition using 2-3 pairs of shoes and a single light source. In this subtractive drawing, tone the surface of your paper (18″x24″ drawing) with a darker mid-tone. Remember to make the quality of the tonal surface consistent. Using a variety of erasers, look for and draw the lighter range of mid-tones and identify the highlights of your composition. Once you have captured this information, you can then work back in the darker values and details using your medium, in this case, graphite or charcoal with accents of white conte’ or chalk.

Sketchbook Assignment: Work on sketchbook at least 10 minutes a day or 70 minutes a week and explore concepts that we have been addressing in class. You have an upcoming sketchbook review. Sketchbook Review #7 is due 11/23.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT I OFFER A TUTORING SESSION FROM 3:30-4:30 EVERY WEDNESDAY. IF YOU NEED ADDITIONAL HELP BUT THAT IS NOT A GOOD TIME PLEASE MAKE INDIVIDUAL ARRANGEMENTS WITH ME!
Drawing: Due 11/23. Create a still life with a variety of textured objects (glass, books, bones, fabric, metal, etc). Use at least five (5) different objects with two light sources. One direct light source and one indirect light source so that you have a hard cast shadow and diffused shadows to work with. Using conte’ crayon to establish your values (dark brown (sepia), red-brown, and white), blending the different sticks to achieve your mid dark & light tones. You may also choose from an additive or subtractive method of drawing or a combination of both. Be sure that you look carefully at the composition you are choosing, create at least five (5) thumbnail sketches to determine what composition best suits this assignment. Turn the sketches in with the drawing. The sketches can be 1/2 page size from your sketchbook. Examples of the type of drawings you should be completing are below:

Sketchbook Assignment: Draw in your sketchbook ten each of the following textural categories: 1. Surface Texture, 2. Entire Texture, and 3. Emotional Texture.
For example, under Surface Texture you can select the following or choose your own: rough, smooth, hard, soft, shiny, bumpy, cracked, frozen, wet, and prickly. Under Entire Texture: glass, wood, water, fur, ice, stone, fabric, metal, sand, brick, and basket. Finally under Emotional Texture, you can select: angry, sad, quiet, noisy, fast, slow, confusing, tired, energized, passive. Examples are located in the Texture, Value, and Tone Lecture.

- Get a drawing tutorial, like the one from Rob Biddulph (#DrawWithRob).
- Attempt to draw your own dinosaur aka Gregosaurus aka Matthew.
- Bring it to class and introduce Matthew to your kids. Let them ask questions.
- Share the video with kids, let them draw at home, colour and get ready to talk about their dinosaurs.
- Set aside enough time for everyone to present their creations.
- Ask questions, answer questions.
- Have fun and marvel at the amount of language that generates.
