Intradistrict/School Choice Information

Default Image - sierravista

The Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) is fortunate to have outstanding schools serving middle school students.  The District has an Intradistrict/School Choice Board Policy that allows parents who reside within district boundaries to request for their student to attend an IUSD middle school that is outside of their attendance area.

Families wishing to pursue Intradistrict/School Choice for the 2022-23 school year must make a request during the lottery window which begins at 8:00 a.m. January 3, 2022 and closes at 4:00 p.m. on January 28, 2022 .

Note: Sierra Vista Middle School is only open to requests for siblings of concurrently enrolled Sierra Vista Middle School students for the 2022-23 school year.  Sierra Vista Middle School is closed to general Intradistrict/School Choice requests and any requests made for Sierra Vista Middle School without a concurrently enrolled sibling will not be considered.

Note: Jeffrey Trail Middle School is only open to requests for siblings of concurrently enrolled Jeffrey Trail Middle School students for the 2022-23 school year.  Jeffrey Trail Middle School is closed to general Intradistrict/School Choice requests and any requests made for Jeffrey Trail Middle School without a concurrently enrolled sibling will not be considered.

If you would like to request a school other than the school to which your student is currently enrolled, please follow these steps by submitting a request through your Parent Portal :

  • Click on the banner titled:  The 2022-23 Intradistrict/School Choice lottery window is open
  • Under the Student Info tab, click on  School of Choice Requests
  • Review the  Parent Acknowledgement and Instructions
  • Click on  Create New School Choice Request
  • Complete the request and  SAVE

There will be a one-to-one exchange based on a random and unbiased lottery that will take place after the Intradistrict/School Choice lottery request deadline. This process creates an ordered interest list of students at the participating schools. The lottery does not account for extenuating circumstances or specific reasons for the request and it is not based on a first come first serve basis.

You may log into your Parent Portal account to view the status of your request.  Due to the high volume of requests received, we are unable to provide status updates regarding a request.

If you would like to request San Joaquin Middle School (IVA) for the 2022/2023 school year, please submit this request through the school choice process as described above.  This process is to request FULL time enrollment at IVA.

Siblings of students who are currently enrolled in a choice school must apply for an Intradistrict/School Choice transfer.  Siblings will be given priority at their school of choice, if space is available, providing the student resides within IUSD attendance boundaries.  Sibling requests must also follow Intradistrict/School Choice steps and adhere to the same January 28 th deadline.

Below are considerations for Intradistrict/School Choice:

  • students in special programs will be approved for transfer only if the receiving school has the capacity to provide the appropriate program or service;
  • parents may only request one school other than the school to which they are assigned;
  • space must be available at the requested school;
  • some schools with lower enrollment may be able to accept additional students beyond the one-to-one exchange;
  • parents must provide transportation to the requested school.

Notifications will be sent to all families the week of February 14, 2022 via email to parents/legal guardians who submitted an Intradistrict/School Choice request during the lottery window .

Families do need to be aware that moving students between schools impacts staffing.  For this reason, families must adhere to their school of choice, if approved.

Who is the director of the Secret Service? Kimberly Cheatle has led agency since 2022

A House Republican leader is planning for an oversight hearing with the U.S. Secret Service after President Donald Trump was shot in the ear at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday evening.

Sunday morning the FBI identified Thomas Matthew Crooks as the gunman who opened fire at Trump's rally . The Secret Service reported that the shooter and one rally attendee are dead. Two spectators are critically injured following the shooting.

House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer, R-Kentucky, made the request for a briefing with the Secret Service and said he would call Kimberly Cheatle, the agency's director, to testify at a hearing.

"My prayers are with President Trump and the victims of the assassination attempt at today’s rally in Pennsylvania. I thank the brave Secret Service members who put their lives at risk to protect President Trump and for the American patriots in the audience who helped innocent victims," Comer said in a news release Saturday. "Political violence in all forms is unamerican and unacceptable. There are many questions and Americans demand answers. I have already contacted the Secret Service for a briefing and am also calling on Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to appear for a hearing. The Oversight Committee will send a formal invitation soon.”

So who is Kimberly Cheatle?

Who is in charge of the Secret Service?

Kimberly Cheatle was sworn in as the 27th director of the U.S. Secret Service in September 2022. She was selected by President Joe Biden in August 2022.

Cheatle has served more than 25 years with distinction for the United States Secret Service across a number of leadership roles. She worked on the Vice Presidential Protective Division, and in 2021, Biden awarded Cheatle with a Presidential Rank Award.

What does the director of the Secret Service do?

In Cheatle's role as director of the U.S. Secret Service, she is in charge of executing protection and investigations for the agency.

The workforce is composed of multiple divisions within the Secret Service including Special Agents, Uniformed Division Officers, Technical Law Enforcement Officers and Administrative, Professional and Technical personnel, according to the Secret Service's website .

What did Kimberly Cheatle do before the Secret Service?

Prior to becoming the Secret Service director, Cheatle worked for PepsiCo as the senior director in Global Security, according to her biography with the Secret Service . There, Cheatle oversaw and directed security protocols for the company's facilities in North America.

Cheatle was the agency's assistant director of the Office of Protective Details, prior to joining PepsiCo. She also served as the Special Agent in Charge of the Secret Service's Atlanta Field Office. In that position, she provided oversight for all missions related to investigation, protective intelligence and protective visits in the state of Georgia.

When will the director of the Secret Service testify?

The hearing is expected to take place July 22, 2024, according to a letter from the Committee on Oversight and Accountability.

When was the Secret Service created?

Established in 1865, the U.S. Secret Service is one of the country's oldest federal law enforcement agencies. The U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division protects the White House Complex and Naval Observatory, according to the Secret Service's website .

One of the newest expansions of the Secret Service's protective missions includes the issuance of Presidential Decision Directives. This established the agency as the lead for coordinating the development and implementation of security plans for National Special Security Events. This covers presidential inaugurations, State of the Union Addresses and other events of national significance.

‘The Buck Stops With Me’: Secret Service Director Soldiers On

Kimberly Cheatle returned in 2022 to lead the agency she had served for nearly 30 years. Now, an assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump has thrown her tenure into uncertainty.

In the summer of 2022, Kimberly A. Cheatle, who handled global security at PepsiCo, delivered surprising news shortly before a board of directors meeting, according to a colleague at the time: President Biden had asked her to run the Secret Service.

The opportunity to return to an agency she had served for a quarter century was one she could not resist, the colleague recalled Ms. Cheatle saying.

She was sworn in that September. Now, less than two years later, an assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump has thrown her tenure into uncertainty.

Since a gunman’s bullet grazed Mr. Trump’s ear at a campaign rally on Saturday, Ms. Cheatle has been forced into an uncomfortable limelight. Critics have questioned how the agency could have missed a man with a gun on a rooftop less than 500 feet from the former president — especially when law enforcement was amassed just below.

An influential congressional panel will press Ms. Cheatle for answers at a public hearing next week on the first shooting of a current or former American president since 1981.

On Wednesday night, two Republican senators, John Barrasso of Wyoming and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, personally confronted Ms. Cheatle in a suite at the Republican National Convention, where she is the senior security official. When she tried to leave, they followed her down a corridor and up a flight of stairs yelling questions that she did not answer.
