A slow-running computer often bogs because Windows commits significant system resources into disk read and write operations. When you open Task Manager and see 100% disk usage, stopping the process that's forcing that use brings Windows back to normal working order.

Many of the following fixes for 100% disk usage in Windows 10 are relevant to Windows 10, 8, 7, and Vista. However, some commands and system settings may vary.

Causes of High Disk Usage on Windows 10

There are several potential causes for high disk usage in Windows 10, but most come down to the same basic idea: Too many things are running for the computer to handle.

One common cause is swapping or paging. Swapping occurs when a computer runs out of physical memory (RAM) and needs more space to store information about the running processes and applications. It uses a file on the hard drive called swapfile.sys to hold it. As Windows works with that information, it constantly reads and writes to swapfile.sys, driving up disk usage.

You also might find that applications that search through or use many files at once access the hard drive at an alarming rate behind the scenes. Many applications can behave this way, including antivirus software and some utilities that are installed with Windows.

How to Fix High Disk Usage on Windows 10

Most of the time, the fixes for high disk usage come down to finding the process that uses the hard drive frequently and stopping it. Below are a few of the most common solutions.

Disable Windows telemetry . Windows 10 collects data about the way you use it in the background. It's been the topic of controversy for privacy reasons, and it's a common cause of high disk usage. Disabling the service responsible can help give the hard drive a rest.

Disable Windows search indexing . Windows keeps track of your files and where files are located on the drive, so you can easily search for the file you need. Sometimes, the process Windows uses to create an index of where those files are can slow down the drive. Disable search indexing to decrease stress on the drive.

Disable SuperFetch . The SuperFetch utility runs in the background on Windows, analyzing RAM usage to see which apps use the most. SuperFetch can use a lot of system resources, including writing to the drive frequently. Disable it to stop the process from running behind the scenes and writing to the drive.

Disable Windows Tips . As you use Windows, an integrated app running in the background offers notifications with advice about the operating system. While this is the least likely problem causing the disk usage utilization error, it is one more app running in the background that can cause problems. Turn off Windows Tips and see if it improves your system performance.

Give Skype write permissions. If you run Skype for Desktop on any Windows version before Windows 10, Skype could be causing the disk usage problem. If Skype doesn't have permission to write data to one of its subfolders in Program Files (x86), it continues to write and ramps up hard drive usage.

To change permissions, right-click Skype.exe in C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\ , then go to the Security tab and select Edit . Next, choose All Application Packages , then select the Write check box under Allow . Finally, to close, select OK .

Disable prefetch in Chrome . A few features in Chrome speed up your browsing experience. One of those services is a prediction service in Chrome that analyzes what site you're likely to visit and preloads those pages in the background. However, this service puts an extra load on your computer and the hard drive.

In Firefox, disable prefetching by visiting about:config in the address bar and setting the network.prefetch-next value to false .

Fix the AHCI driver. Microsoft acknowledges a known bug with some Advanced Host Controller Interface PCI-Express models on Windows 10. If your computer is affected, you'll experience 100% disk usage problems. To fix it, do the following as described below.

First, check that your computer has the AHCI driver by opening the Device Manager and looking at the item IDE ATA/ATAPI . If you see SATA AHCI Controller , open it and select Properties . Under the Driver tab, choose Driver Details . Here, look for the driver storahci.sys . If you see it, then your PC could be susceptible to this known bug.

If you discovered that the storahci.sys driver file is on your system, change its value in the Registry Editor. Go to Details in Device Manager and choose the Device instance path from the drop-down menu. From here, copy the value listed and paste it into a text editor like Notepad.

Next, open Regedit and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI\ . Expand the folder of the value you saved in a text editor. Inside this folder, open Device Parameters\Interrupt Management\MessageSignaledInterruptProperties , double-click MSISupported , and change its value to 0 .

Editing inside the registry opens the door to inadvertent, significant configuration errors. Changing the wrong values may destabilize your computer. Make a backup of the registry by clicking File > Export and saving the .reg backup file to a folder or external hard drive.

Add more RAM . If disk usage is high because your computer doesn't have enough physical memory (RAM), the best solution is to add more. RAM is one of the easiest upgrades on any PC, and it's relatively inexpensive. Plus, your computer will be able to multitask more efficiently as a result.

Disable automatic Windows Updates . Another common cause of high disk utilization sources from Windows Updates taking place at random times, automatically. Stop Windows from updating at random, and you'll stop the drive from maxing out.

If you disable automatic Windows Updates, run manual updates frequently. This process ensures you receive important security updates that keep your computer safe from viruses and malware.

Scan for malware . If all else fails, there's a chance your computer could have a virus or malware. The best thing to do at this point is to make sure you have good antivirus software and run a full system scan. A full scan can take a long time, but it finds and removes any malicious software running on the system and spiking the disk usage.

Fix 1: Disable SuperFetch

SuperFetch helps to decrease boot time and make must-load programs more efficiently. However, it has been identified as a potential cause of disk performance issues in Windows 8 and later versions of Windows, including Windows 10. Here’s how to stop this service:

1) On your keyboard, press Windows logo key , type command prompt , then select Run as administrator .

2) Click Yes at the User Account Control  prompt.

Or check your computer’s disk usage: Type “task manager” in the Windows search bar and select Task Manager , then in the Processes tab, look at the % at the top of the Disk column. Fix 4: Perform a disk check

1) On your keyboard, press Windows key and X at the same time, then choose Command Prompt (Admin) .

3) The command prompt will once again display. Type in the following command:

4) Hit Enter  on your keyboard, then type Y to confirm that you’d like to perform the disk check the next time you restart your computer. Please make sure you have closed all of your applications first.

IMPORTANT: Disk check will start the next time you boot your PC and it might take some time to complete (could be a day for some). If, when you restart, you don’t have time to wait for the disk check to complete, you can skip it. You’ll need to reschedule it again, as described above, though. 

5) Once you’ve completed the disk check, check your computer’s disk usage again: Type “task manager” in the Windows search bar and select Task Manager , then in the Processes tab, look at the % at the top of the Disk column. If it’s no longer 100%, you’ve fixed the problem!

Fix 5: Reset Virtual Memory

Virtual memory can be considered an extension of your computer’s physical memory. It’s a combination of RAM and a portion of your hard drive. When the RAM isn’t enough to perform a task, Windows will temporarily store files in virtual memory, then swap them back to RAM when required. 

To reset virtual memory: 1) On your keyboard, press Windows key and Pause/ Break key at the same time. Then choose  Advanced System Settings on the left panel.

2)  Go to the Advanced tab, then click  Settings .

3) Go to the  Advanced tab again, and choose Change…  in the Virtual memory section.

4) Ensure the  Automatically manage paging file size for all drives checkbox is NOT ticked.

5) Select your windows drive (the hard drive or partition that has Windows installed on it – usually  C: ) ,  and enter an Initial size and Maximum size for your virtual memory:

  • Initial size – This value varies, depending on your computer. If you’re not sure what value to use, just enter whatever the number is in the Recommended category. 
  • Maximum size – Don’t set this value too high. It should be about 1.5 times the size of your physical RAM. e.g. A PC with 4 GB (4096 MB) of RAM should have no more than about 6,144 MB virtual memory (4096 MB x 1.5).

Once you’ve entered your virtual memory values, click  Set , then click  OK to continue.

6) Clear all your computer’s ‘temp’ files. On your keyboard, press Windows key and R at the same time, then in the Run form, type temp and hit Enter . This will invoke Windows Explorer with your Temp folder open, showing you all the temp files on your computer.

7) Select all the files in the Temp folder and delete them.

8) Check your computer’s disk usage: Type “task manager” in the Windows search bar and select Task Manager , then in the Processes tab, look at the % at the top of the Disk column. If it’s no longer 100%, you’ve fixed the problem!

Fix 6: Disable Antivirus Software temporarily

If you’ve installed antivirus or anti-malware programs such as Norton, Kaspersky, AVG, Avast Behavior Shield or Malwarebytes, you should temporarily turn them off or disable them to see if they’re causing your disk usage problem.

Note that Microsoft has its own default anti-malware, Windows Defender . It’s automatically enabled even if you also have other antivirus applications installed. Even if you disable your other antivirus programs, Windows Defender is always there for you during that certain time range. So, no need to worry too much about temporarily turning antivirus off. 

Once you’ve disabled your antivirus , check your computer’s disk usage again: Type “task manager” in the Windows search bar and select Task Manager , then in the Processes tab, look at the % at the top of the Disk column. If it’s no longer 100%, you’ve found the problem, and you should contact the vendor of your antivirus software to see if they can provide some help.

Fix 7: Fix your StorAHCI.sys driver

The Windows 10 100% disk usage problem might also be caused by some Advanced Host Controller Interface PCI-Express (AHCI PCIe) models running with the inbox StorAHCI.sys driver due to a firmware bug. 

Here’s how to determine if this is your problem and fix it:

1) Open  Device Manager by pressing Windows logo key and X at the same time to choose Device Manager .

2) Expand the  IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers  category, and double-click the AHCI controller .

3) Go to the  Driver tab and click Driver Details . If you can see storahci.sys stored in a path of system32 folder, then you are running the inbox AHCI driver.

4) Close the Driver Details window and go to Details tab. From the drop-down menu, select  Device Instance Path . Make note of the path, starting from VEN_ .

5) Type regedit in the search box of Start panel, then hit Enter  on your keyboard to run Registry Editor. Then go to: 

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Enum \ PCI \ < AHCI Controller > \ < Random Number > \ Device Parameters \ Interrupt Management \ MessageSignaledInterruptProperties

The  < AHCI Controller >  here refers to the name you see from step 2). 

The  < Random Number >  differs on different machines.

6) Double click the MSISupported key and change the value to 0 .

7) Restart your computer after the change, then check your computer’s disk usage: Type “task manager” in the Windows search bar and select Task Manager , then in the Processes tab, look at the % at the top of the Disk column. If it’s no longer 100%, you’ve fixed the problem!

Fix 8: Check the health of your disk

You should also check if it’s a hardware problem, which could help you locate the culprit. You don’t need to be a professional to check for disk health, there’re solutions like HD Tune and CrystalDiskInfo in place that can help you find out the stats of your disk.

Here’s how you can check the disk health easily with HD Tune:

You’d also need to check if the disk has bad blocks. Before you start, note that this process could take hours to complete. You may want to try other fixes before this one.

What does 100% Disk usage mean?

When disk usage reaches its maximum capacity, it means that it is either occupied by overt tasks or services that are running in the background. 

100% disk usage almost always goes hand in hand with sub-par computer performance, gaming issues, and loud rattling noises from the hard disk spinning busily. Even new computers can suffer from this issue, which is one of the reasons why there seem to be more than a few components to the problem.

What causes 100% Disk Usage?

There are multiple things that could be going south with your computer if you see the disk usage percentage filled to the brim all the time. Be it a hardware issue, such as an improper cable connection, or a problem with Windows background services and features, corrupted files, and buggy updates – things add up over time and cause the PC to slow down.

18 Ways to Fix 100% Disk Usage in Windows 10

Now, given the long list of potential causes for an overburdened computer, it can be hard to diagnose exactly what is stressing out the hard disk as such. To that end, we look at all the possible ways that you can fix this problem. Try these fixes out one by one, and see if the disk usage percentage dips. 

1. Delete and Rebuild Search Index

One of the common culprits that lead to such high disk usage is Windows Search Index. It is what helps you find files and folders quickly by scanning the disk and turning it into an index to give prompt results.

But certain Windows bugs can cause the search index to run in indefinite loops such that they keep indexing till kingdom come and causing the disk to overload. Here’s how to fix it:

  • Press Start  and type “Indexing”. Click on  Indexing Options .

However, this may only prevent it from going into a ‘search loop’ temporarily, that is until Windows is rebooted. Fortunately, there’s a way to permanently disable the Windows Search Index. Here’s how:

2. Stop Superfetch (SysMain) and Windows Search services

The Superfetch service, or SysMain analyzes your usage patterns, determines how often you use certain programs, and preloads their data to memory so they open faster. But Superfetch (or SysMain) is known to hog up disk usage space and lead to performance shortcomings that otherwise wouldn’t occur. The simple way out is to disable this service altogether.

Now, check the disk usage again to see if there’s a difference.

3. Reset Paging (Virtual Memory)

Windows has a nifty solution to virtually expand your memory when it runs out of RAM – page files. It is ‘virtual’ because your PC is using the hard disk to supplement the RAM for processes that demand a lot of memory space.

But the page file is susceptible to damage and can lead to a higher than normal disk usage. The only way to fix a defective page file is to delete it and create one anew. Here’s how to do so:

4. Delete Temp files

  • Navigate to the Temp folder located here: C:\Windows\Temp

Now check if the issue is resolved. 

5. Reset Sync Tools

OneDrive syncing can sometimes get stuck and continue to sync files even when the process is actually over and there’s nothing left to sync. This causes the disk to go into overdrive, especially when it’s syncing large amounts of data. In these scenarios, it is best to reset it. To reset OneDrive, open the RUN box again (as shown before) and type the following command: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

As soon as you hit  OK , OneDrive will reset. Doing so is known to declutter the disk memory and keep it from running out. 

6. Stop Disk Defragmentation

Disk defragmentation increases the overall efficiency of retrieving data in the future. But it also 1increases disk usage and doesn’t even show up as a process in Task Manager. 1On top of that, Disk Defragmentation is scheduled to turn on by default periodically.

  • To disable disk defragmentation, press Start, type ‘defragment’ and select Defragment and Optimize drives .

This will stop disk defragmentation from starting and cause less load to disk memory.

7. Disable the ‘DiagTrack’ Service

Diagnostics Tracking, or Connected User Experiences and Telemetry, is one service that is known to cause a higher disk usage percentage. Here’s how you can disable it:

8. Update and fix Device Drivers

Some Advanced Host Controller Interface PCI-Express models are also known to cause this problem, especially with the StorAHCI.sys driver. Safe to say, they will have to go. But first, identify whether or not you’re using this AHCI driver.

  • Expand the “IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers”, then right-click Standard SATA AHCI Controllers  and select  Properties .
  • Now, under the “Driver” tab, click on  Driver details .
  • If you find “storahci.sys” in driver files, then you will have to disable it from the registry.
  • Now, go to the “Details” tab in the same window and note down the driver’s value. This value will come in handy later so go ahead and right-click and copy it.
  • Now, type “regedit” in the RUN box and press Enter.
  • Navigate to the following address: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI\(AHCI Controller)\Device Parameters\Interrupt Management\MessageSignaledInterruptProperties
  • Replace the “(AHCI Controller)” with the value that you copied earlier.
  • Now, on the right, double-click MSISupported  to modify it .
  • Change its value data to  0 . Then Click  OK .

If you don’t have this MSI driver, you should still go ahead and update your storage controller drivers from the Device Manager.

  • If there are any updates pending, these will be installed automatically. Once you’re done with this, check your disk usage percentage again to see if there’s any impact.

9. Reconnect (or replace) SATA cable

A problematic SATA cable can also cause this problem. A simple fix for this is to reconnect the SATA cable connected to the hard drive and check if it’s functioning properly. Poor contact with the SATA cable can also force the disk to work harder than usual to have the information go through. You may also want to replace your SATA cable if it’s showing signs of wear, especially at the point of contact.

10. Run SFC for corrupted system files

Corrupt system files can wreak havoc on multiple services and processes and force the disk to go into hyperdrive. To scan for corrupted files and repair them, follow the steps below:

  • Press Start , type in “cmd”, and click Run as administrator .
  • Here, type in the following commands one by one, hit Enter, and let them complete:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

How do you know high disk usage is slowing down your PC?

You’ll know that high disk usage is slowing down your PC because your PC will feel slower when you aren’t using it for anything resource-intensive. For example, if you’re browsing the web or opening a photo stored on your hard disk, but those tasks take five to ten seconds instead of just one, then high disk usage is likely the culprit. 

Here are a few examples of when you can assume your hard disk is being used more than usual:

Opening a folder of photos and videos: The preview thumbnails take a long time to load, and the green bar at the top of Windows Explorer fills up very slowly.  

Gaming: Even if you have a powerful gaming PC , loading a game or a new level takes noticeably longer, and there are occasional stutters. For example, the game randomly stops for one or two seconds as it’s loading new data into its memory, and the hard disk can’t keep up. 

Streaming: Your audio or video player is constantly buffering or displaying blurry or interrupted playback that disrupts your online stream .

Audible noises: Old-school mechanical hard disks are still quite noisy and make rattling noises when busy. If that happens, there’s disk thrashing going on. 

General lagginess: Weird lags when clicking on items, or opening menus or applications.

The clearest way to find out that high disk usage is slowing down your PC is to consult Task Manager . Any pr ocess that consumes more than a few MB per second for a prolonged period of time is worth looking into, regardless of the performance impact.

For example, on a seven-year-old HP laptop with an old mechanical drive, the maximum read and write speeds are about 40 to 50 MB per second. If a single process takes up 25 to 30 MB, you might see 100% disk usage sooner than you expect.

But even a gaming PC with a super-fast NVME M2 SSD — with transfer speeds of up to 5 GB per second — can fall victim to 100% disk usage.

Can running Windows 10 at 100% disk usage damage my disk?

If your Windows 10 disk usage is at 100% for a long period of time, you might see permanent damage . Constant disk usage increases the temperature and thus the chance that your disk will fail.

There’s nothing wrong with 100% disk usage for a few minutes or even an hour. But if your disk is constantly at maximum capacity, and if this persists for several days at a time, performance may unravel.

High disk usage is a problem with an HDD or SSD . Mechanical disks have a physical head that moves across the disk to read and write to it. Sustained 100% usage can lead to mechanical failure. On a modern SSD , the lifespan of the individual cells can decrease if you’re constantly writing and deleting data.

It’s unlikely that you’ll experience data or hardware loss in the short term, but it’s definitely a possibility if high disk usage persists. You should identify the culprit and learn how to fix 100% disk usage as soon as possible.

Low memory and high usage

As discussed above, once your PC runs out of RAM, it uses a virtual page file on your disk. If you don’t have enough RAM to support the programs you use, you’ll force your PC to constantly dip into this page file. That happens especially with 4 GB of RAM or less. In that case, you should update your RAM .

There are a lot of tips and tricks out there to fix high disk usage. Some are useful, while others are unhelpful or dangerous.

Don’t disable your antivirus: Turning off your AV will put you at risk. If your antivirus is causing high disk usage, check out our antivirus advice above. 

Don’t disable disk defragmentation or turn it off: If a defragmentation process is going on, Windows will pause it while you’re working. Let it do its thing while you’re not working, and do not turn it off.

Don’t disable Windows Update: Windows Update is critical to maintaining your security and fixing bugs. While your PC may slow down temporarily while updating, you should always keep your PC updated.

Windows 10 users who experience issues such as slow response time may look into their Task Manager for guidance. Task Manager provides you with a wealth of information regarding the processes that are currently running on your machine.

Among the metrics, you can monitor with Task Manager is your computer’s disk usage. If you see a disk usage of 100% your machine’s disk usage is maxed out and your system’s performance will be degraded. You need to take some corrective action.

Many users who have recently upgraded to Windows 10 have complained of their computers running slowly and Task Manager reporting 100% disk usage.

Here are 10 methods you can use to attempt to resolve the problem of high disk usage on your Windows 10 system. Some may take longer than usual due to the stress and increased usage that your hard drive is already under.

Way 1: Restart Your System

You know from experience that restarting your machine can often resolve all kinds of issues . Your Windows 10 100% disk usage problem is no exception. While taking this route may not help you find out the underlying reason for the problem, if it goes away, that may be sufficient for you.

Be sure to use the “Restart” option which starts your system in a fresh state as opposed to the “ Shut Down ” option which preserves your system state and may not resolve your disk issue.

Way 2: Update Windows

Installing the latest updates can often resolve mysterious problems with your Windows 10 system. Check if you are up to date by going into the “Update and security” section of the Windows Settings app.

You can check for new updates and install them if they are available.

Way 3: Disable Windows Search

A known bug in Windows 8 and 10 can cause a search loop that can be the cause of your high disk usage. To temporarily stop the Windows Search facility and see if it improves your disk issue, open an admin prompt and enter the command : net.exe stop “Windows search” . This will stop Windows search from running until the next time Windows is restarted.

If it turns out that Windows Search was responsible for your Windows 10 disk usage reaching 100%, you can disable it permanently by following this procedure:

  • Press the Windows key + R , enter services.msc and hit Enter .
  • The services window will open. Select the Windows Search entry and double-click it to update its properties.
  • Select Disabled under Startup type and then OK to save your changes.

Way 4: Check For Malware

Your computer may be infected with malware that is causing your disk usage to spike. If you have antivirus software running in the background it should have caught the issue. Nothing is perfect though, so force your antivirus package to scan your hard drive for a potential infection. This could be a time-consuming process since your disk is already experiencing high usage but might be necessary to identify and remove malicious software.

Way 5: Stop the Superfetch Service

Another Windows 10 feature that can cause problems is the Windows Superfetch service. You can disable this service temporarily in a similar fashion to Windows search with the command: net.exe stop superfetch .

Way 6: Change Energy Options from Balanced to High Performance

This change of energy settings seems to have worked for a number of users who have experienced 100% disk usage on Windows 10. Use this procedure:

  • Select the High-performance option from the drop-down box and make sure all plan settings are set to their defaults.

Way 7: Temporarily Turn Off Your Antivirus Software

Another step to take when investigating the cause behind your Windows 10 100% disk usage problem is to turn off your antivirus software temporarily . See if this improves your disk usage. If so, you may want to consider changing antivirus packages. Even Windows Defender can cause problems by increasing I/O and network usage which might lead to high disk usage.

Way 8: Reset Virtual Memory in Windows 10

Virtual memory treats your disk as if it is RAM and uses it to swap out temporary files when it runs out of actual RAM. Errors in the pagefile.sys can cause 100% disk usage on your Windows 10 machine. The remedy to this problem is to reset your virtual memory settings.

Way 9: Run Check Disk

A check disk can show you if there are any physical problems with your hard drive. Usually, a high disk usage indicates that there is an application or logical issue driving the disk usage, but it is worth your time to rule out any physical damage. Run check disk and note its results.

Way 10: Change Settings in Google Chrome and Skype

Some users have reported that making these changes to your Google Chrome and Skype settings can have a beneficial effect on your disk usage.

For Chrome, make this change:

  • Settings -> Show advanced settings .
  • Under Privacy section, uncheck the “Use a prediction service to load pages more quickly” option.
  • You should also try disabling Flash in Google Chrome.

To update your Skype settings use this procedure:

  • To start Skype for Windows 10, select the Start menu from the bottom left of your screen. In the list of available applications, scroll down to Skype for Windows 10 and click to open it.
  • Select the Security tab and click on the Edit option.
  • In the list of “Groups or Usernames” select “ ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES ”. Check the Write option to select Allow which lets Skype write to your disk.

If these methods don’t resolve your issue with 100% disk usage on your Windows 10 computer, you may need to look into replacing your hard drive. One last thing to try is to disable any automatic defrag processes that are running as they may be causing you problems. In general, your hard drive should never be at 100% usage, so if it is, there is some reason for the condition. You need to fix the issue or risk a very slow moving computer.

Disk Usage Should Rarely Be 100%

Windows 10 is largely a reliable operating system, but one problem has plagued it since launch: the 100% disk usage bug .

Resulting in system-wide hangs and freezes, the bug appears in various scenarios and is straightforward to resolve, if you know what you are looking for.

One of the following fixes should resolve any Windows 10 100% disk usage bug whether your computer uses an HDD or SSD storage.

When the error was first discovered, only a few culprits were found. But as time passed, despite the 100% disk usage error being reported to Microsoft, more causes of this bug have been discovered.

1. Run Disk Check

This performance issue is most obvious when attempting to use Windows Search to find a file or program, and anything else that requires the drive to do some work (perhaps copying and pasting a group of files).

To establish whether it is a problem that is affecting you, when your computer next slows down, use Task Manager to run a disk check.

First, press Ctrl+Alt+Del and select Task Manager (or right-click the Taskbar and select Task Manager, or hit Ctrl+Shift+Esc ). Note that this may take some time to open with the drive being under strain.

On the Processes tab look for the Disk column. If you're having problems with drive performance, this will be at 100%, and shaded red to indicate whether you have a problem or not.

Problem sectors on your HDD can cause the 100% disk usage issue in Windows 10. However, using Windows' built-in disk check can fix this:

  • Open Windows Explorer
  • Select This PC
  • Right-click on the C: drive and select Properties > Tools
  • Under Error checking click on Check > Scan drive

Wait while the system scans the drive; a reboot may be required for a full disk repair. This should deal with the error.

2. Update Your Anti-Virus

As with any performance issue, the first thing to do is confirm that your computer hasn't been infected with malware. Your security software should be able to deal with this, whether it's a free app or a paid suite.

At the very least, tools like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware should be able to scan your system drive and detect any problems. Note that with a heavy load on your drive already this may take a while.

If threats are found, use the software's recommendations to discard them and reboot. Next, check your drive's performance again. Hopefully, you've resolved the issue; if not, then malware wasn't to blame, so read on.

3. Check Windows Search

The next thing to check is whether the 100% disk usage error has anything to do with Windows Search.

A bug in Windows 10 results in a "search loop" that causes an increased load on the system drive.

To stop this and prevent it from happening during your current session (until Windows is rebooted):

  • Right-click Start
  • Select Windows PowerShell (Admin)
  • Enter net.exe stop "Windows search"

That should solve most of the issues. If there is no change, even after rebooting, you can permanently disable Windows Search and Indexing.

  • Press WIN+R
  • Type msc , then click OK
  • In the Services window that opens find Windows Search and double-click to open

4. Disable SysMain

Another Windows 10 feature identified as a potential cause of the 100% disk usage issue is the superfetch service . Since Windows 10 1809 (the 2018 Windows 10 October Update) this has been renamed to "SysMain."

To prevent this service from causing the disk usage issue, open another Windows PowerShell (Admin) and enter:

Again, wait a few moments to check whether this has had any effect on your computer's performance. You should also run Check Disk in PowerShell:

You'll be informed that your PC must be rebooted for Check Disk to complete, so make sure you have closed all your applications first.

If this doesn't work, it is likely that you're experiencing a frustrating iteration of this issue that is simple to resolve.

5. Block Flash

Flash remains one of the most vulnerable aspects of modern computing and should be disabled. Adobe killed off its multimedia plugin in 2020, so there's little reason to keep using it, especially as Flash seems to be one of the most common culprits for the 100% hard disk usage in Windows 10 with the Google Chrome browser.

To disable Flash in Google Chrome browser:

  • Open Menu > Settings > Privacy and security
  • Click Site Settings
  • Find Flash and set the toggle to Block sites from running Flash
  • Click Back to confirm, then restart the browser

The next thing to do is update to the latest version of Chrome. In most cases this happens automatically, but if not just go to Menu > Help > About Google Chrome and wait for the update to complete.

If you can't see any of the options, don't worry. It simply means that your version of Chrome has already updated and no longer supports Flash.

6. Switch Web Browsers

It may not be Flash that is impacting on your browser performance.

Another cause could be the browser itself, particularly if you're using Google Chrome.

The obvious option is to choose a different browser. Windows 10 already has two browsers built in. You probably don't want to use Internet Explorer, but Microsoft Edge is an adequate replacement for Chrome.

Several browsers are available, some better than others.

7. Fix Any Issues With Skype

Another widely used application could also be causing your 100% HDD usage is Skype. In an era when online collaboration and video meetings is increasing, Skype is a likely culprit.

Since Skype has been more closely integrated with Windows 10, it is a little trickier to deal with. What you can do, however, is stop Skype from running to help determine if it is the cause of the issues.

  • Press Win + I to open Settings

  • Click Skype, then Advanced options

Head back to the Task Manager to see the change. You may also consider finding a Skype alternative for Windows . If the 100% disk usage bug tends to happen straight after Windows loads, it's a good idea to disable Skype from autoloading. Under Runs at log-in , change the switch from On to Off .

Further issues with Skype can also be dealt with in this screen. You can Repair , Reset , and even Uninstall Skype to aid with your troubleshooting.

8. Fix the PCI-Express Firmware Bug

Some drivers don't run quite as they should in Windows 10. One that has been discovered to be causing 100% HDD use is the StorAHCI.sys driver, which has a firmware bug. StorAHCI.sys intended for storage devices connected to the PC or laptop motherboard via Advanced Host Controller Interface PCI-Express.

To find out if this is the problem and rule it out:

  • Right-click Start and choose Device Manager
  • Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
  • Double-click the AHCI Controller entry
  • In the Driver tab select Driver Details

If the driver listed as C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\storahci.sys , you could be affected by this bug. From there, follow the steps below:

  • Close the driver details box
  • In the Details tab select Device instance path from the drop-down menu
  • Right-click the value, then Copy .
  • Launch Notepad and Paste the contents
  • Next, press WIN+R and type regedit , and click OK
  • Find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI\ and use the pasted string from Notepad to open the correct AHCI Controller, followed by the random number.

Here, expand Device Parameters\Interrupt Management\ MessageSignaledInterruptProperties and you should see MSISupported listed in the right-hand pane. Double-click this, then change the Value data: to 0 .

Click OK to confirm and follow the instructions to restart Windows.

9. Problems Caused by Steam

Enjoy gaming and have Steam installed? There's a good chance this digital delivery system is causing 100% disk usage.

Usually this is due to update delivery, causing the background downloader to get caught in a loop. Clear the Steam cache to fix this.

First, make sure you have exited Steam. Where Steam is a likely cause of the 100% disk usage error, it may hang when you try to exit. In this case, use the Windows 10 Task Manager to close the software.

Next, open the Win + R run box and enter

You'll see a dialogue box, informing you that content will be deleted.

Note that games and saves will be retained, so there is no risk of them being deleted.

10. Disable Diagnostic Tracking

It's worth considering the impact of diagnostic tracking in Windows 10. A feature that you might have otherwise disabled for privacy reasons, it has been blamed for 100% HDD use on many PCs.

When it comes to reducing your hard disk drive usage, it's quicker to simply disable the DiagTrack service. If this is the source of the 100% disk usage error in Windows 10, you can stop the service from launching.

However, to do this you'll need to access Command Prompt in administrator mode.

  • Click Start and type cmd in the search box
  • In the results select Run as administrator
  • Input sc config "DiagTrack" start= disabled
  • Input sc stop "DiagTrack"

When you're done, close the command prompt. You might also reboot Windows.

11. Windows Update

Windows Update may also be a culprit. This usually only happens when Windows Update has a problem (which is typically due to a file refusing to download). You have two options here:

  • Leave your computer alone ---shut all your open applications and wait. Eventually, the files will download, but depending on how Windows Update is scheduled on your computer, it may require a reboot.
  • Shutdown your computer ---once you've done that, restart and wait for Windows Update to resolve the problem.

Once the update has finished downloading, it's wise to run it as soon as possible. Remember to check any previous fixes for 100% disk usage before proceeding; as noted above, Windows Update can reverse these fixes.

12. Reset Virtual Memory

Virtual memory is a combination of RAM and hard disk space and can be responsible for overuse of your HDD. If there isn't enough RAM to perform a task, the HDD is used to supplement the RAM. Data moved to the HDD is then returned to RAM when required.

If you've made it this far, and you've yet to solve the 100% disk usage issue, it could be worth resetting your virtual memory.

  • Press Windows+Break/Pause

  • In the Advanced tab go to Performance > Settings
  • Select the new Advanced tab

  • Clear the checkbox for Automatically manage paging file size for all drives
  • Next, select the Windows drive (usually C:) and then Custom size
  • Add an Initial size and a Maximum size ; note both are measured in MB rather than GB

These numbers can be confusing, so with the first value, rely on the recommended option. For the maximum value, aim for a figure no more than 1.5 times your system RAM .

For instance, a computer with 4GB of RAM should have no more than 6.5GB (6144MB).

The next step is to clear the temporary files that have been used in the previous virtual memory allocation.

  • Open Run with WIN+R
  • Enter temp and click OK
  • In the temp directory, select all files with Ctrl+A and hit Delete

13. Activate High Performance Mode

Windows' standard power modes are prone to the 100% disk usage bug but switching to high performance often overcomes the problem.

The downside, of course, is that your computer will use more power. Thanks to modern processor design this shouldn't be a massive issue. However, notebooks and desktop replacement laptops may take a hit on battery life.

To change to high performance:

  • Click WIN+X > Power Options
  • In the Power & sleep screen click Additional power settings
  • Here, choose High performance , then OK

If this isn't a displayed option, you'll need to create your own custom power plan. Click Create a power plan , then choose High performance . Give the plan a name, tweak any personal settings you need then select it as a power plan to use.

In a moment or two, the 100% disk usage issue should drop to less than 10%.

14. Install the Latest SATA Drivers

Could a storage device driver be resulting in the 100% disk usage error?

Your Windows 10 computer almost certainly uses SATA connections for hard drives, SSDs, and optical drives. If the drivers aren't up-to-date, the disk usage error can occur.

Avoid this by upgrading to the latest SATA drivers.

  • Right click Start
  • In the Power User menu select Device Manager
  • Expand Storage controllers
  • Identify the correct controller for your SATA devices

  • Next, choose then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer
  • Here, choose Standard AHCI Controller and see how this impacts performance

You may need to reboot Windows for this to take effect. Note that if it doesn't work, you can still try this by checking the manufacturer's website for a new driver. This can be installed using the instructions that accompany it.

15. Problems With PC's Power Supply (PSU)

There is a chance that your computer's hardware is causing the 100% disk usage issue in Windows: specifically, the PSU.

If disk usage issues can be attributed to excessive disk activity, then it follows there might be a power-related cause.

100% disk usage has been spotted on Windows 10 laptops running on the battery. Once plugged into the power adaptor, the issue resolves. Similarly, the problem has been shown to alleviate once a new PSU is installed in a desktop PC.

16. Windows Help

Another issue that has been traced to 100% disk usage in Windows 10 is the operating system's built-in active help tool. You'll have noticed this feature that pops up when you're doing something for the first time with useful tips and suggestions.

If you suspect this is causing a problem in Windows 10 with disk usage, you can disable it:

  • Press WIN+I to open Settings
  • Here, select System > Notification & actions

17. Problems With WaasMedicAgent.exe

Incorrectly identified as a virus or malware, WaasMedicAgent.exe (part of the Windows Update Medic Service) is a Microsoft system process that checks downloaded Windows Update files. If there is a problem with the data, the files are downloaded again – a process that could leave your HDD at 100%.

To fix this:

  • Press WIN+R to open a Run box
  • Enter regedit then OK to open Registry Editor
  • Before proceeding, make a registry backup with File > Export , saving the backup somewhere safe
  • In the browser bar, paste this path: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WaaSMedicSvc
  • In the right pane, right-click Start and choose Modify

Disabling the update medic is an extreme step to take. However, it is one way to avoid Windows 10 disk usage hitting 100%.

18. Disable Prefetch

Prefetch is a unique Windows file, first introduced with Windows XP, that helps you by loading frequently used programs into your Windows memory for faster startup of your operating system (for more information, you can take a deep dive into our short guide on Prefetch files ).

While the feature is no doubt a boost for performance, it can cause problems like high CPU usage, especially if you have low memory space, to begin with. In such cases, disabling Prefetch can free up some memory for you.

To do that, follow the steps below:

  • Head to the Start menu search bar, type in 'registry,' and select the best match.
  • Then head to the following location and hit Enter : “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters”
  • Double-click on EnablePrefetcher to open the key and set the Value data to 0 to turn off Prefetch.

Now that you've disabled the Prefetch, you should immediately see an improvement in your CPU's performance.

There is no reason for Windows 10’s disk load to be anything close to 100%, under normal usage. A slow computer is one with a problem, and if you cannot fix it by disabling a browser plugin, stopping services, or running your antivirus software, then the problem may well be hardware related.

How to Troubleshoot 100% Disk Usage in Windows

I recently wrote about t roubleshooting Windows 10 freezing issues and in this post I’ll be talking about troubleshooting another fairly common issue, which is disk usage showing 100% all the time. I’ve noticed that this condition is especially true on laptops.

Normally, the disk usage will go up to or close to 100% for a few seconds or even for a couple of minutes, but then should settle down to something more reasonable (usually under 10%). If you consistently see a very high disk usage, it means there is something else going on that isn’t quite right.

To start, you can check your disk usage by opening up the Task Manager in Windows 10. You can either right-click on the Start button and select Task Manager or you can press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC . If you just see a small list of apps, click on More details at the bottom.

On the main Processes tab, you’ll see a quick overview of the CPU, Memory, Disk and Network utilization. For me, unless I’m doing something on the computer, the disk usage is normally right around 0. In a bad case, you’ll see something like below where disk usage is 100% or very close to it.

In some cases, you might see just one process that is causing the high disk usage, but in other instances, the process that is causing the spike may change.

Now let’s talk about how we can determine what is causing the issue and then come up with a solution. In some cases, the solution is easy and in others, it’s a bit trickier. Before we get into those, here’s what you shouldn’t do.

Don’t Try These Solutions

On the web, I came across a whole bunch of solutions that just didn’t settle well with me because they can cause more problems later on. Try to avoid doing anything listed below:

  • Disabling the BITS service – It’s required by Windows for your PC to be updated and it won’t help disabling it.
  • Disabling Windows Search or Superfetch – Again these are core Windows services and you should not disable them.
  • Modifying Page File – You should leave it so that Windows manages the page file. Don’t try custom values.
  • Disabling Windows Defender – Except for Method 6, don’t disable Defender.

Method 1 – Upgrade Firmware for SSDs

If you have an SSD installed on your machine and are having the disk usage problem, it’s most likely a problem with the firmware. SSDs are fast and unless you have some program that is accessing the disk all the time, it really should never be at 100% for more than a few seconds.

Method 2 – Perform a Clean Boot

If you have never performed a clean boot, now is the time to learn. A clean boot basically loads Windows with the fewest drivers and startup programs. A clean boot will help you determine whether the issue is being caused by Windows itself or by a third-party program installed on Windows.

Microsoft has a great article on how to perform a clean boot . I recommend trying it because is usually fixes a lot of other issues too. It’s a bit time-consuming, but totally worth the effort. Just set aside a few hours on a weekend to get it done.

If you find that everything loads fine on a clean boot, then slowly enable each startup program one by one until you determine which program is causing the slowdown. You can then uninstall it or disable it. For starters, always start by disabling any third-party anti-virus/anti-malware program as those programs can have a tendency to access the disk all the time.

In online forums, I’ve heard a lot of people complain that Skype was the cause of the disk usage spike. So try uninstalling Skype and see if that works.

Method 3 – Upgrade Memory (RAM)

Another thing you want to check is to see how much RAM you have installed on your machine. Since Windows 10 can run on older devices, I’ve seen a lot of people install it on old desktops and laptops. This is fine, but you need to make sure the machine has a decent amount of RAM, meaning nothing less than 4 GB.

You can also open Task Manager and click on Performance and then click on Memory .

As you can see, I have 16 GB of memory and about 6 GB is in use. This means if you have 4 GB of RAM on your computer, all the memory would be exhausted. Everything that can’t be fit into memory is paged to the hard disk. So basically Windows will use your hard disk as a temporary memory device.

If you have a lot of data that has to be written to disk, it will cause your disk usage to spike and your computer to slow down. If you notice that the line in this graph is close to the top, then it means you probably need to upgrade the RAM on the computer.

Method 4 – Use High Performance Power Plan

With some computers, the hard drives are smart and will try to power down or change RPM to save power. One example is the green/blue Western Digital hard drives. It sounds like a great feature, but I don’t think it really works all the well in practice.

To avoid this problem, go to Power Options and select the High Performance power plan. In addition, click on Change plan settings and then expand Turn off hard disk after and set the minutes to 0 .

This will ensure that the hard disk does not power down or go into the low power state, which can cause the disk usage problem.

Method 5 – Disable MSI Mode

This solution is more obscure and probably won’t help most people, but it’s worth mentioning because Microsoft has specifically stated that this is an issue in Windows 10. Basically, it has something to do with AHCI, which is technical jargon you don’t need to know.

When you have this issue, Disk Usage will show 100%, but when you sort the column, there isn’t any particular program or process that is showing high disk usage. You can read the Microsoft KB article here and attempt the fix.

Method 6 – Disable Windows Defender with 3rd Party AV

By default, Windows Defender should disable itself if you have third-party anti-virus installed on your system. However, in some instances, this does not happen and running two anti-virus programs at the same time can cause excessive disk usages and a bunch of other problems.

To check if Windows Defender is disabled or not, click on Start , then Settings , Update & Security and then Windows Defender . Make sure Real-Time protection and Cloud-based Protection are turned Off .

Again, you should ONLY do this if you have third-party anti-virus installed on your system.

Method 7 – Disable Windows Notifications

This solution has been widely distributed on the Internet, but I’m not sure whether it really works or not. I believe it does for certain versions of Windows 10. Anyway, it doesn’t really hurt to disable it, so that’s why I’m going to mention it.

Basically, you disable extra Windows notifications that are basically advertisements. Go to Settings , then click on System , and then Notifications and Actions . Simply turn off the Get tips, tricks, and suggestions as you use Windows .

It’s worth noting that all your normal notifications will work just fine, you just won’t see any useless ones from Microsoft.

Method 8 – Check Hard Disk for Errors

If nothing above is working, then you could actually have a problem with your hard drive. There are several ways to check the health of your hard drive, which I’ve written about before.

In many instances, repairing errors on the drive fixed the problem. In other instances, replacing the drive was necessary.

Hopefully, one of the above solutions will work for you. One last resort option is to perform a clean install of Windows 10 , which will fix the problem for anyone who happens to have malware installed on their systems and maybe don’t know it. Fix 1: Fix Your StorAHCI.sys Driver

According to Microsoft support, Event ID 129, the resets of the disk controller, can be caused by many factors. One of the known ones is that some Advanced Host Controller Interface PCI-Express (AHCI PCIe) models cause these symptoms in Windows 10 when running with the inbox StorAHCI.sys driver.

Due to a firmware bug, the Solid-state drive (SSD) does not properly complete input/output when Message Signaled Interrupt (MSI) mode is enabled. As a result, the Windows storage stack attempts to reset the device after waiting on unresponsive read/write for a period of time.

So, the first solution to fix 100 percent disk usage Windows 10 here is to disable MSI mode via the registry. Follow the guide below:

First Move: Identify if You Are Running the Inbox AHCI Driver (StorAHCI.sys)

Step 1. Press “Win+R” to call out the Run box, then type “devmgmt.msc” and hit Enter.

Step 2. Under “IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers”, right-click “Standard SATA AHCI Controller” and select “Properties”.

Step 3. Navigate to the “Driver” tab and click “Driver Details”. If you see “storahci.sys” in the list, you are running the inbox driver.

Second Move: Disable MSI for the Controller in the Registry

Step 1. In the same properties window, navigate to the “Details” tab and select “Device instance path” from the Property drop-down menu. Please pay attention to the Value that starts with PCIVEN, which will be useful in Step 3.

Step 2. Open the registry editor by typing “regedit” in the same Run box.

Step 3. Navigate to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetEnumPCI<AHCI Controller>Device ParametersInterrupt ManagementMessageSignaledInterruptProperties”, where <AHCI Controller> refers to the device instance path you noticed in Step 1. Then change the value of the MSISupported key from “1” to “0”.

Fix 2: Change Energy Options from Balanced to High Performance

According to the feedback provided by the suffers, changing energy options from Balanced to High Performance works well on 100 percent disk usage Windows 10. Please do the followings:

Go to Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings, then choose High performance from the drop-down box and make sure all plan settings are on default.

First Move: Change Settings in Google Chrome

Step 1. In Google Chrome, go to “Settings”.

Step 2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click “Advanced”.

Step 3. In the “Privacy and security” category, make sure the “Use a prediction service to load pages more quickly” is turned off. In addition, ensure that “Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed” is disabled in “System” settings.

Second Move: Change Skype Settings

Step 1. Make sure that your Skype is quitted in the Taskbar.

Step 2. Open Windows Explorer and open “C:Program Files (x86)SkypePhone”.

Step 3. Right click “Skype.exe” and choose “Properties” from the context menu. Then open the “Security” tab and select “Edit”.

Fix 4: Disable Windows Search

Windows Search enables to search files on your PC fast. If you don’t use it at all, you can disable it completely. Disabling Windows Search service will stop the indexing of all files. However, to identify whether this is the cause of your 100% disk utilization problem, we recommend temporarily disabling Windows Search first.

First Move: Temporarily Disable Windows Search

Note that Windows Search will start again when you restart your computer. So, this change has no impact on your computer performance.

Step 1. Press “Win+X” combination keys and select “Command Prompt (Admin)”. Then allow its user account control.

Step 2. In the Command Prompt window, type “net.exe stop “Windows search”” (image attached) and hit the Enter key.

Check if your disk usage and the performance of your computer improve. If YES, you should permanently disable Windows Search as described below.

Second Move: Permanently Disable Windows Search

Step 1. Press “Win+R” combination keys to call out the Run box, then type “services.msc” and hit Enter.

Step 2. Locate “Windows Search” and double-click it to enter its “Properties” window.

Fix 5: Disable SuperFetch Service

SuperFetch helps to decrease boot time and make must-load programs more efficiently. However, it has been identified as a potential cause of high disk usage Windows 10. Here’s how to stop this service:

Step 1. Press “Win+X” combination keys, then choose “Command Prompt (Admin)” and allow its user account control.

Step 2. In the Command Prompt window, type “net.exe stop superfetch” and hit the Enter key.

Fix 6: Disable Antivirus Software

If you’ve installed some antivirus or anti-malware programs on computer, you can temporarily disable them to see if they’re the cause of your 100 percent disk usage problem. If your computer’s disk usage returns to normal, you may need to contact the software vendor to see if they can provide some help.

If no improvement is offered by the vendor, you don’t need to worry too much. Microsoft has its own default anti-malware, Windows Defender. It’s automatically enabled no matter you have other antivirus applications installed or not. So even if you disable the antivirus programs you installed, Windows Defender is always there.

Fix 7: Uninstall Any Flash Player Update

Uninstalling any flash player update is also reported as a good solution that has helped some users get out of disk utilization 100 Windows 10. To do so, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced Options > View your update history > Uninstall updates. Then uninstall the flash player update.

Virtual memory is a portion of your hard drive and is regarded as an extension of your computer’s physical memory. When the RAM is not enough to perform a task, Windows will temporarily store files in virtual memory, and swap them back to RAM when required.

However, unreasonable virtual memory may lead to Windows 10 high disk usage. Here is how to reset virtual memory:

Step 1. Press “Win+Pause/Break” keys to call out “System” information. Then choose “Advanced system settings” on the left panel.

Step 2. Go to the “Advanced” tab, and click “Settings”.

Step 3. Go to the “Advanced” tab, and choose “Change…” in the Virtual memory section.

Step 4. Make sure “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives” is NOT checked. Then highlight your system drive and customize the Initial size and Maximum size for your virtual memory. Finally, click “Set”, and then “OK” to continue.

  • Initial size: this value can vary depending on your computer. If you’re not sure what value to enter, just enter the recommended number.
  • Maximum size: it is recommended to set this value 1.5 times the size of your physical RAM. If you PC has a 4GB (4096 MB) RAM, the value should be no more than about 6,144 MB (4096 MB x 1.5).

Step 5. Now it is time to clear all temporary files on your PC. Press “Win+R” keys to call out the Run dialogue, then type “temp” and hit Enter. This will invoke Windows Explorer, with your Temp folder open.

Step 6. Select all the files in the Temp folder and delete them.

Wait a few minutes and see if Windows 10 100 disk usage is fixed.

Fix 9: Disable Windows Update Service

Some of our users suggested that Windows Update Service could also bring 100 disk usage Windows 10. You may just have a try to disable it and check later.

Step 1. Run “services.msc” and press “OK”.

Step 2. Scroll down to find “Windows Update” and double-click on it.

Fix 10: Change File Explorer Options

Step 1. Open Windows 10 File Explorer, and then navigate to “View” and click “Options”.

  • “Include compressed files (ZIP, CAB…)”
  • “Always search file names and contents (this might take several minutes)”

While a computer’s performance mainly depends on its CPU power and available RAM, but the hard disk drive also plays an important role. If your disk is running at 100% usage in the task manager on your Windows 10 machine, then it will greatly impact the performance of your PC.

There could be a number of reasons to why there’s a 100% disk usage on your system, we have highlighted the most common ones in the list below:

  • A CPU process or activity on your PC stopped working while accessing the disk.
  • A malware infecting your PC.
  • SearchIndexer.exe being used aggressively. This is a Windows service which facilitates files indexing within Windows Search.
  • Superfetch being used aggressively. This is also a Windows service which pre-loads programs into the RAM to load them faster.
  • Antivirus software scanning files in the background.
  • Corrupted disk drives.
  • Files intensive programs or scripts running in the background.

Below are some of the known fixes that have helped many users resolve the high disk usage issue in Windows 10.

Restart your PC

Restarting is the quickest fix for a PC running slow due to 100% disk usage. It’ll fix the problem right away. However, if you’re persistently getting 100% disk usage on your PC, even after several restarts, then you need to get to the root of the problem before it destroys your hard drive.

Check for Windows Updates

Go to Settings » Updates & Security » and hit the Check for updates button. If there’s an update available, install it to see if it fixes the problem.

Disable “Connected User Experiences and Telemetry” Service

The Connected User Experiences and Telemetry is a diagnostic service which Microsoft uses to get diagnostic and usage information from a users’ PC to “improve the experience and quality of the Windows platform.”

Unfortunately, it’s also known to be causing high disk usage on some machines. To see if it has affected your system as well, try disabling the service as described in the instructions below.

After disabling Connected User Experiences and Telemetry service, check in the Task Manager if the disk usage is back to normal. If not, follow the next tip.

Disable Windows Search service (SearchIndexer.exe)

The SearchIndexer.exe file is often found to be the culprit behind high Disk and CPU usage on a PC. Windows uses the SearchIndexer service to keep disk files in the Windows Search index. This helps in finding files faster when searching in the Start menu or in the Files Explorer.

If the Windows Search service is aggressively using the disk drive, you may want to turn it off to resolve the issue.

Check the disk usage in Task Manager after disabling Windows Search service, it should be back to normal now. If not, then Windows Search service probably wasn’t the cause of the problem, you may want to enable it back on your system.

Close Antivirus software temporarily

While scanning your PC for vulnerabilities, antivirus software can also stress the hard disk by aggressively accessing the files stored on disk. If you have enabled background file scanning in your antivirus program, then that might be the cause of the 100% disk usage in Task manager.

We suggest you temporarily close the Antivirus software installed on your PC to see if it fixes the problem. If it does, then either set the software to scan files at a time when you’re not using your PC (mid-night, maybe), or simply uninstall it and use Microsoft’s official Windows Defender antivirus software to keep your PC clean of viruses.

Close disk intensive programs running in the background

If you’ve got a program or script running in the background which reads/writes files to your disk, then turning it off might help fix the problem. It could be a game or a coding project you’re working on.

Also, minimize the number of programs running on your PC. Close the programs that you’re not actively using but are always running in the background. Even better, remove all unnecessary programs from the Startup script on your PC.

On Windows 10, it’s easier to manage Startup apps . Go to Settings » Apps » then select Startup from the left panel. Try turning off the toggle switch for all apps . Keep only the apps that are necessary to startup with the system.

Check and Repair Disk Drives

If none of the above solutions work, then maybe it’s an issue with the disk itself. Try running the chkdsk command on all your hard drive partitions to find and fix any errors in the disk.

Open CMD as Administrator

  • Issue the following command to find and fix errors in the C: drive. chkdsk C: /f /r /x
  • Hit Y to confirm the disk repair command.
  • Similarly, run the chkdsk command on all drives on your PC. Change the drive letter to the drive you want to check. Examples: chkdsk D: /f /r /x chkdsk E: /f /r /x chkdsk F: /f /r /x
  • Restart your PC and then see if repairing the drives have fixed the disk usage issue.

  • Initial size: This value varies, depending on your computer. 
  • Maximum size: Don't set this value too high. It should be about 1.5 times the size of your physical RAM. e.g., a PC with 4 GB (4096 MB) of RAM should have no more than 6,144 MB of virtual memory (4096 MB x 1.5).

Once you've entered your virtual memory values, click Set, then click "OK" to continue. 

Step 6. Clear all your computer's 'temp' files. On your keyboard, press the Windows key and R at the same time, then in the Run form, type temp and hit Enter. This will invoke Windows Explorer with your Temp folder open, showing you all the temp files on your computer.

Step 7. Select all the files in the Temp folder and delete them.

Don't Try These Solutions to Fix Windows 10 100 Disk Usage (Important)

When you search for Windows 10 100 disk usage, you get millions of results to help you solve your problem.

However, I come across a whole bunch of solutions that just don't settle well with 100% disk usage in the task manager. But these operations cause problems later on. The situation is like this example - the whole arm has been anesthetized for a long time because you want to treat your finger. Try to avoid doing anything listed below:

Disabling the BITS Service - It's required by Windows for your PC to be updated, and it won't help to disable it.

Disabling Windows Search Services - Disabling this will not solve your problem. On the contrary, these are core Windows services, and you should not disable them.

Modifying Page File -You should leave it so Windows manages the page file. Don't try custom values.

Disabling Windows Defender - Don't disable Defender. Your computer may be infected with a virus.

1. Turn off Windows Search

Windows Search was built to help search files on hard drive quickly. Windows constantly indexes all the files which can take a toll on your PC’s performance. You can disable it, but that only means that searching for files would take longer.

Launch the RUN command (Windows+R) to open Command Prompt by typing CMD.

Relaunch the Command Prompt by typing CMD in the RUN command and hitting Enter. Once it opens, type the following command.

The system will perform a disk check only when you reboot your computer. So save all your work and do the reboot.

4. Reset Virtual Memory

Virtual memory doesn’t just consist of RAM, but it is also a part of your system’s hard drive. When Windows finds low RAM to perform actions, it borrows a part of your hard drive’s memory to get the job done. Maybe there is a virtual memory leak? If so, resetting it should fix it.

Press the Windows button and search for Advanced System Settings. Under the Advanced tab, find Performance and click on Settings there.

5. Turn off Windows Defender or Antivirus

  • Alter the value of the MSISupported key from “1” to “0.”

10. Disable Windows Update Service

First of all, identify that you are having this issue or not

Step 1 – Press Windows key + X and choose device manager from the menu.

Step 2 – Now, once the device manager opens up, just find  IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers . Just expand it.

Step 3 – Now, click on Standard SATA  AHCI controller
