We thought of creating the Best Bangladeshi Movies list after watching a few Bangladeshi Films, we never thought we would find many Indian actors and directors working in Bangladeshi cinema, we found many films that are made in collaboration with India and Bangladesh.

We have shared a lot of Pakistani movie recommendations and Pakistan Drama series , so we thought to share some of our other Neighbour’s films list for Indian Audiences.

The Cinema of Bangladesh, popularly known as Dhallywood, has a long history and plays a vital role in the cultural fabric of the nation.

The industry mostly makes Bengali-language films. Bangladeshi film has changed with time, experimenting with different subjects and genres while capturing the sociocultural nuances of the country.

Best Bangladeshi Films of All Time

Shimu (made in bangladesh).

Made in Bangladesh, released in 2019, directed by Rubaiyat Hossain, is a Bangladeshi-French drama film about Shimu, a young lady who works at a clothes factory in Dhaka. The film puts awareness on the challenges of Bangladeshi female textile workers and their campaign for improved working conditions.

Shimu, performed by Rikita Nandini Shimu, becomes a manufacturing union leader and organizes a campaign to demand workers’ rights and fair treatment.

The film depicts these women’s hardships, exploitation, and resolve in their pursuit of justice and empowerment inside the textile business.

Mostofa Sarwar Farooki’s film Television is an Important Bangladeshi movie releasd in 2012. It’s a satirical play about how media and television affect a rural Bangladeshi community.

The film shares the lives of the villagers and their reaction to the arrival of TV, which changes their thinking and disrupts their traditional way of life.

The plot focuses on Ratan, a young kid whose obsession with television has both positive and harmful effects. The film addresses issues such as cultural change, media impact, and the clash of traditional values and modernity. Television is one of the best Bangladeshi Movies of all Time.

Jibon Theke Neya (Taken From Life)

Jibon Theke Neya is a Classic Bangladeshi film directed by Zahir Raihan. It is regarded as one of the most iconic films in Bangladeshi cinema history. It was released in 1970, The title means “Taken from Life” in English.

The film is a political satire of the social and political circumstances in East Pakistan (Bangladesh) in the late 1960s. It criticizes the governing class and addresses exploitation, corruption, and inequality suffered by the common people.

Aynabaji (Mirror Game)

Directed by Amitabh Reza Chowdhury Aynabaji is a Bangladeshi thriller film, released in 2016, and received critical acclaim. The film’s interesting premise, thrilling storytelling, and outstanding performances helped it achieve enormous popularity and critical praise.

The plot is about Ayna, played by Chanchal Chowdhury, an actor who is struggling to get employment. He eventually assumes the persona of another guy, Raju, who has a troubled history. Ayna becomes entangled in the complexity of Raju’s life and faces unforeseen obstacles and risks.

Amar Bondhu Rashed (My Friend Rashed)

Amar Bondhu Rashed is a Bangladeshi classic film directed by Morshedul Islam in 2011. It is based on Muhammad Zafar Iqbal’s novel of the Title.

The film is based on the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War . It is about a group of young lads, their camaraderie, and their participation in the liberation movement. The story is mostly about Rashed, a young child who becomes a symbol of bravery and sacrifice among his classmates and peers.

Piprabidya (Ant Story)

Piprabidya was released in 2014 and is a noteworthy Bangladeshi film directed by Mostofa Sarwar Farooki. The Film, which is often referred to as Ant Story in English, follows the life of Shahiduzzaman Selim’s Mithu, a middle-aged man.

The plot centers on Mithu’s hardships, midlife crisis, and frantic search for purpose in life. He develops feelings for a little girl, which sets off a chain of events that prompt reflection and unanticipated outcomes.

Runway is a 2010 Bangladeshi film directed by Tareque Masud and Amjad Hossain. It depicts the lives of Bangladesh’s marginalized people and digs into the country’s political and social scene.

The plot focuses on the figure of Babu, a street boy who becomes involved in smuggling in order to live. The film depicts Babus and other marginalized people’s hardships on the outskirts of society. It sheds light on their tribulations, hopes, and the complicated sociopolitical concerns they face.

Oggatonama (The Unnamed)

Oggatonama, which means The Unnamed, is a 2016 Bangladeshi film directed by Tauquir Ahmed. The film centers on the life of a former Bangladeshi independence warrior who, although making a substantial contribution to the nation’s liberation battle.

Despite his heroic history, Shahiduzzaman Selim’s character, the protagonist, struggles with poverty and societal indifference. The movie explores his inner turmoil and the difficulties he has attempting to reintegrate into society following the war. Oggatonama is one of the best Bangladeshi films of all Time.

Doob (No Bed of Roses)

Doob released in 2017 and directed by Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, is a Bangladeshi film starring Irrfan Khan, and Nusrat Imrose Tisha in the lead roles.

The film tells the tale of acclaimed director Javed Hasan (Irrfan Khan), who, following his wife’s divorce and the beginning of a romantic connection with an actress, encounters both emotional and professional difficulties. The plot centers on the difficulties of interpersonal relationships, how society views certain things, and the effects of the characters’ decisions.

Mujib: The Making of a Nation

Mujib: The Making of a Nation: The Film is Produced by NFDC and Directed by Indian famous director Shyam Benegal , The life and political career of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who is frequently referred to as Bangladesh’s father of the nation.

Mujib, who went on to become Bangladesh’s first prime minister and president, was instrumental in the country’s fight for independence from Pakistan.

The film explores Mujib Ur Rahman’s leadership, his influence on Bangladesh’s political climate and identity, and his important contributions to the country’s liberation effort.

The New York Mets are about to get a big boost to their starting rotation.

And their playoff chances.

Right-handed starter, Kodai Senga, is on his way back to the Mets rotation.

Due to a strained shoulder, Senga has not pitched at all this year.

Senga, 31, began a rehabilitation assignment July 3 with the Mets Class-A Advanced affiliate in Brooklyn, New York.

An All Star with the Mets in 2023, Senga finished his rookie season with a fine 12-7 record, in 29 starts.

Senga threw to a sparkling 2.98 ERA, and 1.22 WHIP in his 166.1 innings as a Mets rookie last year.

Senga struck out an average of 10.9 hitters per nine innings, but he also walked a rather high total of 4.2 hitters per nine.

Oddly, Senga threw 14 wild pitches, which is a bit unusual.

Senga yielded 17 home runs. Hitters hit .208 against Senga last year.

About Kodai Senga:

In December 2023, the Mets signed Senga to a five-year, $75 million contract.

Senga was a star pitcher for the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan.

In his 11 seasons in Japanese baseball, Senga went 104-51, with a 2.42 ERA in 275 game appearances.

While in Japan, Senga threw his fastball over 100 miles per hour.

According to brooksbaseball.net, as a rookie stateside pitching for the Mets, Senga consistently threw his fastball between 95-96 miles per hour.

This is the normal repertoire and pitch usage for Senga in September 2023:

Four-seam fastball-used 37% of the time.

Split-fingered fastball used 27% of the time.

Cutter-used 23% of the time.

Slider-used 11% of the time.

Curveball-used 2% of the time.

His split finger pitch has been called a “Ghost Forkball” because of the way it disappears when it gets close to the plate.

Scouting Kodai Senga:

At 6-1, 202 pounds, Kodai Senga is well sized, with strength throughout his frame.

When he arrived stateside, Senga was viewed by scouts to be a Grade 55 pitcher. That translates to a pitcher with a deep repertoire of quality pitches. The pitcher projects to have good command and control.

In Senga’s case, he didn’t grade above 55 because of his slightly high walk totals while pitching in Japan. He was walking over three hitters per nine innings, but there were some years when that average was above four.

Sanga has always been able to keep his high velocity fastball throughout the game. In fact, as he showed in his first year in New York that his fastball explodes, making him tough to hit.

With every Sanga pitch moving this way or that way, Senga induces lots of swings-and-misses.

It is the variety of movement between his four-seam fastball and his split-fingered fastball that gives him and advantage in changing the eye level, and altering the balance of the hitter.

Adding and subtracting velocity is a hallmark of Senga’s offerings.

Just when the hitter thinks the four-seam, or split are coming, he can bust a wicked slider.

Senga knows how to pitch.

The Mets record is 42-42, a third place standing in the National League East.

Now with Senga in his rehab assignment, he is moving closer and closer to returning to a Mets rotation that has missed his presence, and will welcome his return.

Anthony Vaccarello finally figured out how to reproduce his collection of ultra-sheer pantyhose dresses. Bella Hadid hit Cannes in look seven from the Saint Laurent fall 2024 show: a halter dress featuring 10 denier hosiery cups, a knotted pantyhose bodice, and a below-the-knee skirt with a control top hemline.

Hadid, styled by Molly Dickson, leaned into the Old Hollywood glamour that has become synonymous with the Cannes Film Festival, adding a pair of mahogany peep-toe ankle strap heels and an enormous pair of drop earrings from Chopard.

This look fits into Hadid’s latest sartorial M.O. of sheer earthy tones that can only be described as “sexy nymph.” While promoting her fragrance, Orebella, in New York, the model wore a diaphanous nude Dior slip dress by John Galliano, as well as a cream-colored Rokh dress with a lace bodice. And yesterday in Cannes, she further explored brown tones in a simple tank dress . But this look—with only some extremely well-placed seams preserving her modesty—is by far her boldest to date.

When asked about how he would manufacture these ephemeral pieces from the collection, Vaccarello told Vogue, “Don’t even ask me about production—I can’t tell you.” This being the first instance the delicate outfits have been spotted on the red carpet speaks to Hadid’s risk-taking style. Even if she is the only person who ever wears one of these sheer Saint Laurent looks out in the world (let’s see if she can make it to the end of the night without any snags) the fact that Vaccarello was readily willing to make one for her speaks to Hadid’s immense power in the fashion industry.

And if this is Hadid’s wardrobe for her first official day of events in Cannes? We can only imagine what’s to come.

Maximum secrecy – including an omerta about the cast – was observed during the filming of “ The Chronicles of Libidoists ,” a Taiwanese film fable that is pitched as a modern-day retelling of “The Little Mermaid” fairy tale.

A work-in-progress teaser in Cannes , however, disclosed that major Taiwan star Wu Kang-ren was the protagonist of the production which, now completed, seems certain to challenge censors worldwide.

In the hands of Yang Ya-che (“Blue Gate Crossing,” “Girlfriend, Boyfriend”), “The Chronicles of Libidoists” is an exploration of sex and sexuality pursued by a contemporary coterie of sophisticated urban dwellers. The sumptuously mounted film contains enough high-mindedness and hidden meaning (often conveyed through music and flowers) for art-house audiences to pick over, and enough story contextualize the sex scenes.

But it does so with very few clothes and scarcely an orifice unprobed.

In pursuit of their overlapping goals, Wu’s businessman-author, a transgender woman, an heiress and a motorcycle delivery man (who leads a double life in the neon-lit sex industry) engage in a cycle of full-frontal nudity, group sex, hardcore bondage, homosexuality and the use of objects.

High-profile, sexually-explicit films from Asia have previously courted opprobrium. Chinese actor Tang Wei was famously banned for several years in her native country after starring in Ang Lee’s “Lust, Caution,” though her male co-star Tony Leung Chiu-wai was celebrated for it. The source material for 1999 Korean BDSM film “Lies” landed its author in jail, though 25 years later a restored, remastered and uncut version of Jang Sun Woo’s more nihilist movie is now playing the specialty festival circuit.

What attracted you to the project? What persuaded you to join?

I actually agreed to work on this project without even having read the script. I have known director Yang for a long time and had always wanted to work with him. I knew that he was going to make a new film, but nobody knew what it was about. I simply submitted my CV. Yang was like, “Cool, let’s have a chat” and told me roughly when they were going to shoot. I blocked my time for it, still without knowing the story.

When I got the script, I was surprised, but at the same time not surprised. And I’ve never asked him why he wanted to make this.

What I was being offered was like returning to the time I started my career. It’s very pure. There is no burden. I just needed to invest myself and focus on playing that role to my best.

Did you ask friends, family or your agent for help in weighing the positives and negatives of joining this film?

I don’t have an agent or a manager. And, actually, I didn’t discuss it with anybody.

When I started out, I had a mentor, a very senior director, and worked with him to position myself as an arthouse actor. But because of the environment in Taiwan, I ended up doing more and more commercial projects. I got various different product endorsement contracts. Being a movie star comes with financial and reputational benefits. And through a combination of hard work and luck, I won some awards. So, people probably have an image of me as someone who is very mainstream, healthy and positive.

But there is a difference between movie star and actor. As an actor, I’m very happy that I agreed to this film. It is like the tension accumulated over the past decades has been released.

Other people’s reactions, the external environment is not something I can control. But for myself, it’s all about playing the role and doing my job well.

So, this film’s shock value was neither a negative nor part of its attraction?

The film industry is a business. So, there will be positive and negative things. But I did not invest myself in this kind of role, because I want to create shock value.

Honestly, the kinds of nudity I was willing to be involved in may not be the last time. And I’m not bothered by the moral standards attributed by other people. In the end, the film belongs to the director.

An actor may have a peak period of maybe 20 to 30 years. Well, I’m now 15 years into my career. I have a lot of passion and am still willing to take some risks.

What was the emphasis of your performance? What was the emphasis of the direction?

The main focus of my preparation was trying to understand what was going through the director’s head. The way that Yang wrote the script left huge room for imagination. Once we were on set, Yang gave us a lot of very abstract descriptions of things. Only rarely did he say, Ddo it faster” or “more emotion.”

Have you ever worked with an intimacy coordinator before? How was the experience?

In the Chinese speaking world, this kind of setup is not as common as maybe in the west. But I actually knew the woman [coordinator] from before.

Scenes with a lot of nudity, a lot of sex require a lot of preparation in advance. Everybody was very stressed, especially the crew, who fortunately were very serious about it. Every move, every touch. It was all calculated and communicated.

The coordinator, in the beginning, would demonstrate with a pillow. The pillow would be me and the coordinator would role play the leading actress. Then she’d swap and play the role of the actor, with the pillow. Then it would be me with the coordinator. Then the actress with the coordinator. Finally, the actress and I would do a test shot together. And so, by the time we’re actually filming the scenes, I don’t think there was any remaining awkwardness. Everyone was comfortable, because we all know exactly what is going to happen – cast and crew.

Also, this way there was no need for body doubles for any of the actors at any time.

What is next for you?

Recently, at an awards ceremony, I found myself sitting next to Tony Leung, who is a legend, especially for Chinese speaking actors like me. There, he told me that he was going to Germany to do a new film [Ildiko Enyedi’s ‘Silent Friend’] . He’s like a moving boat, one that you can never catch up with. After all this time, he’s still going off exploring a new continent, looking for new treasure.

Like him, I’m willing to do a lot of exploration. But I don’t think I have finished exploring the Greater China region. There are so many different dialects. So, it’s all Chinese but you can express yourself in different dialects and variants. I would like to keep breaking the mold and work on more. Or maybe take a role in Japanese.

And in terms of changing my physicality, I’ve previously dropped a lot of weight to become skinny in a very short period of time. I don’t see myself doing that again any time soon. That’s really not good for your body.

Cinema, or motion picture, is the art of moving images; a visual medium that tells stories and exposes reality. Cinema is the world’s most recent art form and so far, the world’s most complex, collaborative, and costly artistic expression. Nowadays, cinema can be defined as the art of colorful moving images enhanced by voices, sounds, and music. It is also telling stories and entertaining human. Cinema is the greatest media of a country which can easily portray a country, its population, ideas, philosophy and cultures. In this modern era one does not need to watch cinema in cinema hall as it can also be available at home. Film has a uniquely powerful ubiquity within human culture. Cinema has become a powerful vehicle for culture, education, leisure and propaganda. Contemporary research has also revealed more profound aspects to film’s impact on society. In a 2005 a paper by S C Noah Uhrig says ‘Cinema is good for you: The Effects of Cinema Attendance on Self-Reported Anxiety or Depression and ‘Happiness'. Film is a reflection of society, both present and past. Film and its innovations sometimes have to catch up to society but sometimes it leads society too. Movies are stories; movies are people who come out with ideas about something they want to say something they want to tell someone. Movies are a form of communication.

This paper aims to outline the historical and regional context of Bangladeshi cinema, exploring its different integral aspects, such as production value, style, cultural content, representation, nation state policies, distribution and exhibition practices, transnational connections and other industrial factors. At the same time, this paper examines the role of film in the formation of Bangladeshi national culture and the analytical approaches and complexities revolving around the concept of national cinema in Bangladesh. The concept of ‘national cinema’ has been commonly linked to the sociological thinking of the nation and its national identity, and it is also rooted within the geopolitical and cultural boundaries of a nation state. Again the idea of national cinema is not perennial like the idea of nation. National cinema has been a negotiated and changing concept, shaped by both the inward contemporary cultural specificity of a nation state and the outward cultural influence gained through its transnational encounter. Therefore, in order to study the concept of national cinema of Bangladesh in this paper, I address and discuss a series of issues: the concept of Bangladeshi nationalism, its relation to Bangladeshi film culture, a brief context and the conditions of contemporary film industry, the transnational affects and effects of rapidly changing mediascape on Bangladeshi film culture.

The objective of this study is to understand how the integration of digital technology (DT) in the Bangladesh Film industry has been responded to by its production, distribution and exhibition related organisations. Since no research on digital integration has been considered in a developing country context, and specifically within the area of concentrating on the industry rather than the films themselves, this research therefore addresses the gaps within the knowledge field. The Bangladesh Film Industry (BFI) used to be a centre for film production, distribution and exhibition, but this traditional industry has been in decline for decades. In response to the decline, the government started an integration process of DT in 2003, yet eight years after the launch only a fraction of the project has been completed. Apart from its partial adoption in the film production sector, distribution and exhibition have appeared to resist the adoption of new technology. This thesis therefore sets out to explore the causes of partial integration of DT in the film industry in Bangladesh through a study of the workforce, business owners, practitioners, scholars, government officials and executives functioning in and outside the industry. With the mixed method approach and emphasis on qualitative engagement (two case studies and 38 interviews), this thesis explores current attitudes and beliefs and identifies potential barriers to effective integration. In particular this dissertation examines five areas: technology integration, training for workforce development, production, distribution and exhibition capabilities, and argues that the political factor was the most important driver in integrating DT, while knowledge integration, training, and development of digital production, distribution and exhibition compatibility at individual and organisational levels were ignored. Moreover, the greatest concern of losing a job or business within the industry community due to inadequate knowledge, skills and finance is impeding the possibility of full completion of the integration process within the industry. Overall, two important contributions of this research include 1) an exploration of factors that impeded progress of the film industry in responding to the DT and 2) a formulation of some suitable recommendations to overcome the challenges in order to completely realise the integration of DT within the Bangladesh Film Industry. However, further research is recommended to investigate whether completion of the integration process will save the industry from decline or not.
