If you’d like to be able to access the internet on the go, without having to connect to WiFi, then you’ll need to have a Data SIM card inserted in your tablet.

Three business review: The best for cheap tariffs

  • Barry Collins

three business mobile review - featured

Three offers some unbelievably cheap deals, but it can’t match the service of its rivals

  • Unlimited data from £5/mth
  • Vodafone merger may improve coverage
  • Below average for customer service, coverage and reliability
  • Expensive roaming in some countries

Three was once the plucky young upstart of the mobile phone business, taking its name from the then-cutting-edge 3G network it rolled out in the early 2000s. Now it’s set to truly become a part of the establishment, with an imminent merger with Vodafone due to be finalised in the coming months.

While the regulators cast their eye over that potential deal, Three is still open for business. And new customers could well benefit from the improved coverage that becoming part of the Vodafone group should bring, addressing one of the big weaknesses identified in our survey of business customers.

Three doesn’t scoop any awards in the Expert Reviews Business Mobile Network Awards 2023, although it does come close, especially in the value for money section, which is definitely the network’s main selling point. However, whether Three remains the bargain proposition it has been while Vodafone mops up the premium customers once the merger is complete remains to be seen.

So, aside from the potential future benefits of joining the Vodafone group, is there any other reason to entrust your business mobiles to Three? Let’s find out.

Three Business review: What do you get?

One glance at the table below will confirm that Three is certainly competitive when it comes to price – something that’s not to be sniffed at during a cost-of-living crisis that’s hitting small businesses every bit as hard as consumers, if not harder.

At the time of writing, Three was offering a frankly incredible SIM-only deal with unlimited data (subject to the obligatory fair-use policy) for only £5/mth, so long as you were willing to commit to a two-year contract. To put this in context, that’s at least £5 cheaper than the cheapest we’ve seen from any of the other networks on test here, with some of them offering deals with as little as 1GB of data. However, it’s worth noting that Three’s offer doesn’t include personal hotspot usage, so you’ll need to look elsewhere if you want to connect laptops or other devices.

Three’s most expensive SIM-only deal is £24/mth, and that gives you unlimited data with the option to use it as a personal hotspot as well. You can even get that price down to £18/mth if you’re willing to commit for two years.

Value for money is one of Three’s strongest categories in this year’s awards, with 34% of Three customers declaring themselves “very satisfied” with the value on offer, which is more than on any other network. Unfortunately, it also has the highest proportion of customers who are “very dissatisfied” with value for money, dragging down its overall score.

The choice of handsets could be better, too. This is by no means an outright failure – 88% of Three customers said they were satisfied with the range of phones on offer to businesses – but its range is smaller than what’s offered by its rivals and clearly focuses on the big-hitting brands.

Three Business review: Customer service

Three’s customer service was found to be wanting in our survey. Although 84% satisfaction is by no means a cause for alarm, it was still the weakest score of the four major networks and, likewise, the 5% of customers who said they were dissatisfied with the service was also the worst score of any network.

Perhaps the merger with Vodafone – winner of a Highly Commended award for customer service – will improve matters in this regard.

Three Business review: Coverage, reliability and speed

Coverage appears to be a black spot for Three customers. Although an 82% satisfaction score in our survey is by no means terrible, it’s ten percentage points behind both Vodafone and EE. An awful lot of Three customers sat on the fence in this category, with 15% saying they were neither unhappy nor satisfied with the levels of network coverage.

The network fares no better on speed and reliability. Three was the only network with fewer than 80% of its customers satisfied with speed in our survey, albeit by only slightly more than a percentage point. And while 82% were happy with the network’s reliability, a stubborn 5% said they weren’t happy.

Three business review: Roaming

If you do a lot of international business, check the small print carefully when you’re ordering a Three SIM or handset, as the roaming costs are variable.

Three claims you can use your data allowance in more than 70 “Go Roam” destinations around the world, including most of Europe, the US and Australia. However, unless it’s specifically stated otherwise in your plan description, that roaming comes at a cost of £2 per day and, for other countries, that cost climbs to £5 a day.

Those costs might not be super-prohibitive for short business trips, but if you spend a lot of time abroad then you might want to look elsewhere.

Three business review: Extras

With Three’s super-keen prices, there’s not a great deal to shout about when it comes to extras. Business customers do get access to the Three+ rewards app – where you get discounts and offers for Caffè Nero, Nando’s, Moonpig and others – but we’d honestly struggle to call that an actual business benefit, and rewards apps like these are ten a penny.

Three Business review: Verdict

Three clearly competes hard on price, with the cheapest tariffs we’ve seen from any of the major networks by far. But cheap doesn’t necessarily equate to good value: if you want the best speeds, reliability and coverage then you’ll have to look elsewhere.

Why get a SIM only deal?

  • Choosing a SIM

If you've run out of contract and are happy with your current phone (or are simply looking for a great way to save on your bills), switching to a SIM-only plan could be the way to go. Given the added flexibility, reduced cost, and lack of impact on your day-to-day use of your phone, SIM-only contracts are becoming increasingly popular, especially thanks to the rise of cheap-plan providers such as SMARTY, VOXI, and GiffGaff.

We've collected all the latest SIM-only offers in our SIM-only deals comparison table below. From here you can find the best deal that suits you, with offers available from the big four phone providers (EE, Vodafone, O2, and Three), as well as some great options from smaller and cheaper brands such as VOXI, SMARTY, Lebara, and GiffGaff. With a range of data plans, benefits, and contract lengths available, you will be sure to find something which suits your needs.

Looking to pair a great SIM-only deal with a new device? You can also check out our guide to all the best phone deals right now, including the lowest prices on many of the best phones available today.

The latest SIM-only offers in the UK

With SIM-only deals increasing in popularity, 5G included in every deal, and a fresh divide emerging between the big four providers and their smaller, cheaper competition, the value opportunities from grabbing yourself a great SIM-only deal have never been better.

Increasingly, SIM-only offer providers can now accommodate for increased flexibility, reduced cost, and improved benefits. The big four networks now, more often than not, offer free access to streaming services, reward schemes, and other discounts with their SIM-only plans, whereas smaller networks are able to offer high data packages for a much-reduced price for those not in need of extras and perks.

If you already know you want a SIM plan and even know the data cap, network and more, then this should be easy, Simply use our SIM comparison chart above to find your perfect option.

Want to know what a SIM is and what it stores, or just not sure what you really need? That's where we step in with a complete guide below to get you started.

How does a SIM only deal work?

SIM card

What does a SIM card do and what's stored on one?

A SIM card has a couple of purposes. Most importantly, it is used to identify the phone contract you've signed up for, fulfilling your data, calls, and texts that are included in your plan.

A SIM plan also provides two numbers with overly complicated names -  the ICCID serial number, International Mobile Subscriber Identity number (IMSI) and the Mobile Subscriber Integrated Services Digital Network number (MSISDN), the latter of which is the user's telephone number.

In other words, a SIM card identifies your phone number and the SIM plan that you've subscribed to. You can read our full SIM card storage guide to find out more.

What does SIM stand for?

As is usual for popular pieces of tech, SIM stands for something that sounds complicated but is quite simple. SIM stands for 'Subscriber Identity Module' - another way of saying a device to identify your phone deal.

There are a lot of benefits to choosing a SIM tariff over a phone contract. While it can be slightly more complicated, especially if you need a new phone as well, its flexibility, affordability, and other factors help make it an obvious choice.

Affordability: When you break down the costs of a phone contract, you realise that you're paying a lot more than simply buying the phone and SIM separately. A SIM plan alone will be much cheaper, even if you're having to buy a new phone with it.

Flexibility: A phone contract will always tie you in for a minimum of two years so you can pay off your costs. However, a SIM plan can be anywhere from just 1 month long, allowing you to sell off your phone if it breaks or you decide you want something new.

Variety: With such a wide variety of prices, data caps and networks, choosing a SIM plan allows you to customise your plan to the exact factors you want. This is especially helpful if you have your eyes on a network that doesn't sell phone contracts.

Sustainability: Phone contracts end and if you decide you're happy with your handset, why hand it in for something new? If you're more than happy with the handset you have, hold on to it and get a cheaper SIM, allowing you to enjoy that handset for longer.

Picking the right SIM:

SIM card in smartphone

There's a surprisingly large amount of factors to consider when choosing a SIM plan, and while there aren't really any bad choices, it's about working out what factors suit your needs.

How much data do you need?

While almost every single SIM plan will automatically offer unlimited texts and calls, data caps can range massively from 500Mb all the way through to unlimited data SIM only deals .

There are plenty of options in excess of 30GB, but the large majority of people are unlikely to need this much, usually using under 10GB each month. The easiest way to decide how much data you need is simply to consider how much you'd previously used on older contracts.

First time you're getting a SIM? These are how the data caps line up with usage:

  • 1GB:  A limited option that won't be enough for most. If you rarely use the internet and occasionally need to use Google Maps or check the internet, this can be a cheap option.
  • 5GB-10GB:  This is the range most people will fit into. It allows for pretty intensive usage of social media, Maps and internet searches without fear of running over. While you can do a bit of streaming, don't push it and avoid HD!
  • 10GB-50GB:  If you like to stream when you're out and about, use maps on a daily basis and generally have a data intensive lifestyle, this will likely be a cap you should be looking in. Keeping under 50GB can keep your costs at a still affordable point.
  • 50-100GB:  At this point, you're going to have to be a real data drainer for this to be necessary. Downloading apps on the go, HD streaming, big downloads and working from home.
  • 100GB-unlimited:  Unlimited data plans have significantly come down in price over the years and can even be a legitimate alternative solution to having full broadband if you live somewhere with an excellent 4G/5G connection. However, for most people, it's not going to be necessary.

What contract lengths are available?

There are four contract lengths you might see with SIM-only deals,  1-month rolling, 12 months, 18 and 24. Realistically, 18-month contracts are pretty rare so the other three are the ones you'll see more.

24-month contracts tend to be the cheapest per month on big data plans but you're tied in for a while. 1-month rolling plans from the likes of GiffGaff, VOXI, and Smarty are surprisingly affordable but you won't find them with the four main networks.

12-month contracts are the tariffs that come up most often and, for the majority of people, will be the best choice.

What SIM card size do I need?

SIM cards these days fall into three sizes and these are: Standard, Micro and Nano, descending in size. If you're ordering your SIM-only deal, you'll likely find it arrives in a credit card-sized piece of plastic, out of which can you pop your microchip SIM.

A standard SIM measures 25 x 15mm and was used in phones before 2010 and a few after that.

The Micro SIM stands at 15 x 12 mm and was used in phones from 2010 and you'll still find some phones work with these now.

The Nano SIM, introduced in 2012, measures in at 12.3x 8.8mm and is the most commonly used SIM in phones.

The Combi SIM might be what you get sent by a SIM-only provider, as it contains all three sizes, and you push out the one that fits your phone. This is ideal as you don't need to know your size prior to this as you can hold it up to the SIM tray and see.

Should you, for whatever reason, need to decrease the size of your SIM card, but do not have a combi SIM, you can go in and speak to an advisor for your network provider who, more often than not, should be able to provide a free replacement with your same phone number which will be an appropriate size.

How to switch to a new SIM only deal:

Three SIM cards stood up

How to switch SIM plans:

Switching phone plans has become a much easier process than it was in the past. Where before you had to go back and forth between your old and new provider, gathering details, now it's just a few steps.

Firstly, you need to know you're eligible to switch plans. If your contract still has a few months until it ends, you are likely to be charged for the remaining time meaning it is usually best to fully finish your contract first.

Switching and keeping your number:

Once you know when your contract is finishing and you've got your new deal, you need to decide if you want to keep your number. If so, you can request a PAC code (Porting Authorisation Code) from your old network. This can be done via the phone or through text.

Thanks to the introduction of Text to Switch by Ofcom, all you need to do is text PAC to 65075. Then you simply get in touch with your new provider and give them the code you receive in response.

Switching with a new number:

Don't want to keep your number - it's just as easy! Simply get in contact with your new provider, tell them you want a new number, and tell your old network you're ending your contract.

This can also be done via the Text to Switch service. Simply text STAC to 75075.

Will my phone be locked to a network?

Phone networks in the UK are no longer allowed to lock phones to a specific network. In December 2021, Ofcom announced new regulations which force UK network providers to only provide phones which are unlocked and thus can be used with a SIM card of any network.

This rule came into place due, in part, to the unnecessary complications and costs which surrounded unlocking a mobile device. Many providers had been charging as much as £10 to unlock a device, and due to the process taking a matter of days, it was seen by many as too much hassle and thought to bother switching networks.

SIM networks: MVNOS and main carriers:

Over the years, a massive range of networks have emerged now resulting in a lot of choice. However, there are four main networks that support all of these other options.

EE, O2, Three and Vodafone are the four main networks. The factor that makes them stand out is that they use their own service, coverage, and reach across the UK, all of the rest of the networks 'piggyback' off of these four.

Piggybacking, while a strange term to use, simply means a network makes use of one of those four main network's coverage. Virgin and VOXI use Vodafone's coverage, iD Mobile and Smarty use Three's and GiffGaff and Sky use O2's.

These networks are referred to as MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operator). Using one of these piggybacking networks doesn't mean you'll get a weaker connection, or any worse coverage than the main options. It's exactly the same as being on the original network...just you won't get access to their additional features like reward schemes or EE's free subscriptions.

Flying to Moscow Airport Sheremetyevo soon? Avoid on high roaming costs and buy a sim card for Russia on arrival at Moscow Airport or get yourself an e-sim card for Russia. Prepaid sim cards in Russia come with a lot of data and are cheap, but language barriers are real! E-sim cards are easier, but a couple dollar more expensive.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Russia is actually really affordable! Great value for money. When I discovered this it definitely made me smile. Who does not love cheap data?

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends buying a Megfon prepaid sim card at Moscow Airport for traveling in Russia. Megafon has a great prepaid sim card deal for tourists: 30 GB data + free social media for just $6 USD.

Be prepared that pretty much no one speaks English at Moscow International Airport so buying a prepaid sim card can be a hassle.

Therefore Traveltomtom definitely recommends e-sim cards for traveling to Russia. As soon as the plane lands you are online. However, there are not many e-sim cards for Russia available on the internet. SimOptions is the only e-sim provider that sells e-sim cards for Russia .

Arriving at Moscow Airport SVO

First off this airport is spread out with 6 terminals and traveling in and between the terminals takes time. There are trains that connect the terminals so if you are in transit don’t worry the transportation system is pretty well organized. But hey we are in Russia, be prepared to struggle with languages barriers.

You may think at an international airport with this status there would be a ton of people speaking English, but forget about it. Welcome to Russia!

The ladies at the information desk all spoke good English and were very helpful. A tip for when you visit Moscow, download a translate app this will make traveling in Russia much easier.

To use most translate apps that use the dictation function you need a working internet connection. Sheremetyevo Airport has very easy access to good and free WiFi but as soon as you leave the airport you would wish you had a prepaid sim card for Russia with data. So no need to explain you anymore why you should buy a Russia sim card on arrival.

Aeroexpress SVO Airport

In and between Terminal D and E there is the Aeroexpress train station, the most convenient way to get from Sheremetyevo Airport to Moscow city. Just before you enter the train station there are many mobile phone shops where they sell prepaid Russian sim card for tourists.

Mobile internet operators in Russia

The main mobile internet operators in Russia are: Tele2, Beeline, MegaFon, MTS and Yota. Apart from Yota and MTS you can buy a Russia sim card from any of the operators at Moscow Airport.

Yota is a fairly small operator with a weak 4G network in Russia and is not recommended for tourists. But especially for an MTS prepaid sim card it is a pity they don't sell them at Moscow Airport. MTS has the strongest 4G network in Russia and is the only provider that offers 5G in Russia.

Where to buy a sim card at Moscow Airport

As I said the airport is pretty big and it more or less comes down to which terminal you arrive. Most travelers from Europe will arrive at Terminal B or D so let’s have a look at buying a Russian sim card there first.

If you are about to visit Moscow then I recommend you to go to the city by Aeroexpress, a convenient train that connects Sheremetyevo Airport to Moscow city. It is located between Terminal B and D. Just before you enter the train station there are many shops lined up where you can buy Russia sim cards for tourists as well.

At Terminal F there are also shops in the arrival hall where you can buy a prepaid Russia sim card.

Buying a sim card at SVO Terminal B

Arriving at Terminal B at SVO airport makes things easy for you as there is no choice. The only available sim card for Russia is Beeline. It is impossible to miss the Beeline shop as it is straight in front of you when you walk out of arrivals.

Prepaid sim card Beeline

beeline russia sim card

The picture is hard to read when you don’t speak Russian. Neither do I so I had the guy selling the Beeline sim Russia sim card explain me in his best English what everything means.

600 Rubles = $9

  • 15 GB - 4G internet
  • 500 minutes calling in and to Russia
  • Valid for 30 days

Total costs for this package is only around $9, that is only $0,60 per GB data. I told you Russian sim cards are cheap! When arriving at Terminal B buying a Beeline sim card for Russia is worth it.

Buying a sim card at SVO Terminal D

At Moscow SVO Airport Terminal D there are two options for you. In the arrivals hall on level 1 there is TELE2 and at the departures hall level 3 you can buy a Megafon sim card.

Prices and info below are updated in January 2024. Prices are in Russian Ruble: $1 USD  = 88.5 RUB and 100 RUB = $1.13 USD.

Megafon Russia prepaid sim card

megafon russia

Let me tell you if it is worth going up two levels to the Megafon kiosk to buy your Russia sim here.

I went there twice as a week later I wanted to double check the information what I wrote down and both ladies spoke very little English. Service level for English speaking tourists is zero at Moscow Airport so be prepared. I used a translate app to get the following info.

There are two Megafon sim cards for tourists available:

  • 20 GB + 750 minutes + unlimited texting - valid for 1 month =  750 Rubles - $8.5 USD
  • 30 GB + 1,500 minutes + unlimited texting - valid for 1 month =  1,000 Rubles - $11 USD

Both packages are really great value for money!

TELE2 Russia prepaid sim card

tele2 sim russia

Depending on which exit you take from the luggage belts you will either walk up to the TELE2 shop or it is on your left in the arrivals hall. At the small shop two young employees were very helpful and explained the available TELE2 sim cards fro tourists in Russia.

TELE2 Russia offers the following sim cards for tourists:

600 Rubles (400 + 200 activation costs) = $7 USD

  • Unlimited calls to TELE2  numbers in Russia
  • Free Facebook, VKontakte, Viber, Whatsapp
  • 1 month valid

900 Rubles (700 + 200 activation costs) = $10 USD

  • 30 GB - 4G internet
  • 800 minutes calling in and to Russia

Looking at these Russian prepaid sim card packages I am impressed by the value for money of TELE2. Since I never really call and text anyway, a TELE2 sim card for Russia was a perfect match.

Beeline Russia prepaid sim card

beeline russia shop

There is a Beeline shop that sells the following package:

500 Rubles = $6

  • Unlimited internet - 4G network
  • No hotspot available
  • 14 days valid
  • 30 Rubles per day extra, top up credit can be bought everywhere

There is also a shop called EBPOCETb where they sell Megafon sim cards and Beeline sim cards. The guy in the shop recommended me to buy a Megafon sim card instead of Beeline. Scroll down to see 4G network coverage maps for Russia.

Buying a sim card at SVO Terminal F

In the end I headed to Terminal E and F to find the perfect Russia sim card for tourists. At Terminal E there is NO shop that sells prepaid sim cards for Russia, but in Terminal F there was a Megafon kiosk again.

Megafon sim card Russia at SVO Terminal F

Of course here they sold the same sim cards for tourists as they did at the Terminal D, but to my surprise they also sold a specific tourist package.

  • 30 GB data + 1500 minutes + unlimited social media - valid for 15 days =  500 Ruble - $6 USD

WOW! Looking at the above I am sure you are stunned too! Free social media and on top of that 30 GB data just for $6 USD. I asked if there would be any activation costs, but nope you pay just the 500 Rubles.

For tourists traveling to Russia for less than 2 weeks this for sure is the best Russia prepaid sim card you can find at Sheremetyevo Airport. The Megafon shop is open from 09.00 to 21.00 daily and is next to the meeting point at Terminal F.

Best 4G/5G mobile network in Russia in 2024

Let’s quickly have a look at the mobile providers in Russia selling sim cards at Moscow Airport to determine who has the best 4G/5G network in Russia. For more detailed maps of the 4G/5G network coverage  in Russia have a look at the link and you can zoom in to the region in Russia you will be traveling.

Is there 5G in Russia?

No, there is still no proper 5G network in Russia in 2024. Only in the city center of Moscow there is a small 5G network available when you are having an MTS sim card. Unfortunately they don't sell MTS sim cards at Moscow Airport. If you want an MTS 5G sim card you have to go to an MTS store in Moscow city center.

Megafon 4G/5G network coverage map

megafon 4g 5g network coverage map russia 2024

Looking at the mobile internet coverage maps for Russia you can see that as of 2024 the 4G/LTE network coverage is pretty similar for each provider. However, Megafon is slightly more extensive than Beeline and Tele2 and therefore is rated as the best 4G/LTE network in Russia in 2024.

I expect Russia to start rolling out 5G soon, but unfortunately it is hard to go through the Russian news on the internet as I do NOT speak a word Russian! ;)

Order a prepaid sim card for Russia online

orange holiday world international prepaid sim card for russia

With such cheap prepaid sim cards on arrival at Moscow Airport I would not directly recommend buying an international sim card for Russia. However, it makes you forget about all the hassle buying a sim card on arrival since barely anyone even speaks English.

If your phone is not e-sim compatible then look into the following if you want to order a prepaid sim card for Russia on the internet.

Arrive prepared in Russia with an international prepaid sim card. You order them online and a physical prepaid sim card will be delivered to your home address. You put this sim card in your phone and it automatically connects to an available network upon arrival in Russia, basically when the plane lands you are instantly online.

SimOptions is the only sim card provider that sells physical prepaid sim cards for Russia:

  • 10 GB data for 14 days = $49.90 USD

Click here for more info or to order an international sim card for Russia via SimOptions .

Also a last reminder that if your phone is e-sim compatible you can order an e-sim card for Russia online .

My experience buying a Russia Sim Card at Moscow Airport

I decided to buy a TELE2 sim card for traveling in Russia and spent $9 USD on the smallest prepaid sim package. I went on a trip to the Altai Mountains in Siberia and to my surprise I could not only use the network of TELE2, but also the Megafon network. No clue why but it worked smooth.

Another reason why I would recommend you to buy a Megafon or TELE2 prepaid sim card for Russia at Moscow Airport.

A working network connection in Russia is as you can imagine a challenge in the worlds biggest country. But overall if I had a signal the 4G speed was good, especially in cities. On the road in Siberia I mostly just had a 3G signal, which worked fine.

More about my road trip in Altai, Siberia , check out my blog about this undiscovered region in Russia!

I hope this blog about prepaid sim cards in Russia on arrival at Moscow Airport was helpful for you if you have a question please leave me a comment.

Sheremetyevo (SVO) Airport

SVO2 Airport - Photo by Davisx_Chen@FlickR

There's a very neat and nice post office opened 24 hours in Arrivals zone (2nd floor), where among other things you can browse the interent for 200R ($8) / hour, use a printer, and charge your mobile phone. There's also wi-fi in TGI Friday's restaurant (2nd floor, Arrivals). There's a bar and a good grocery store in the Arrivals area, both opened 24 hours.

A few restaurants are scattered in the departures area (after the check-in counters), the only ones worth attention are Tajmahal restaurant (located next to Terminals 6-9, upstairs) and the Irish bar - the favourite among transit passengers. If you end up waiting for your flight, it’s better to go to one of these two places (by the way, you can plug in your laptop there).

The departure and arrival area outside of the check-in area have a few 24-hour food and souvenirs shops, pharmacy, cafes (a meal for about $10, drink - $2-$5), bank and exchange offices. The airport is located about 15 km to the north outside of Moscow, 5km to the right from Moscow - St Petersburg highway.

The new Terminal 3 was opened recently and it's much better than SVO2, but not all the flights arrive there, yet.

Sheremetyevo SVO Arrivals / Departures

Traveling to / from sheremetyevo airport  , sheremetyevo - moscow with an aeroexpress train.

The best way to get to / from Sheremetyevo. The new train express (since 2009) takes you directly from Sheremetyevo Airport arriving to Moscow center (Belorusski train station). It takes about 35 minutes and the ride costs about 400R (€8). You can buy your ticket using an App or just before the departure. The train station for the Aeroexpress train is connected to the airport, so it's only about 10-15 minutes walking once you leave the luggage claim area.
