Song Meanings and Facts
by Amanda London · Published September 9, 2021 · Updated September 9, 2021
In “Give It 2 Me”, Madonna is depicting herself as an indomitable, extremely self-confident individual. And she puts this idea in various, albeit very general, contexts, including a sexual one, to illustrate.
But with this being a dance song and all, ultimately such bravado can be interpreted as a means of encouraging, by example, the people in the party to “get stupid” or freely dance, as we like to say in this blog.
Indeed the Queen of Pop intentionally designed this piece, in her own words, as a track that would “get the whole place jumping” when played or one that someone can “work out to”, i.e. a hype, inspirational piece.
And what it is the listener is essentially being encouraged to do is give their all to whatever endeavor they are engaged in at the moment, which if they are in a party or musical venue, as designed, would then entail vigorous dancing or bouncing.
She did so in 2008. It was the second single from the singer’s “Hard Candy” album.
Madonna composed “Give It 2 Me” with support from Pharrell Williams. At a later date, she alongside Pharrell and proceeded to produce it.
“Give It 2 Me” was one of the songs to be nominated for “Best Dance Recording” at the 51st Grammys. The said award was eventually given to “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” performed by Daft Punk. The following songs also earned nominations in that category:
This was a major hit for Madonna. It was a top-10 tune in over 20 regions.
“Give It 2 Me” topped the “Billboard Hot Dance Club Play” chart. In doing so, it became the singer’s 39th number 1 single.
Madonna recorded the Grammy-nominated and dance-pop song, “Give It 2 Me” in 2007. The song is the third single from the singer’s eleventh studio album entitled “Hard Candy”.
Madonna’s longest-term label, Warner Bros Records, released “Hard Candy” on April 18, 2008. The album was the last Madonna album to be released under the record label. It marked the end of a 25-year collaboration between the singer and Warner Bros Records.
Madonna featured and collaborated with top artists and producers on the album, including Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, Timbaland, Nate “Dania” Hills, and The Neptunes. She has stated that the majority of the songs on the album describe her personality and are autobiographical to some extent.
“Hard Candy” is one of Madonna’s best collections and has provided her with many recognitions and accolades.
Vodafone and Warner Bros Music agreed on a deal that made the songs on the album available to only Vodafone users before the album’s official release. Sony Ericsson also agreed on a contract that gave them the rights to preload the album on their phones.
The album topped Billboard’s 200 charts, the U.K. Albums Chart, and over 20 albums chart of many European countries. It has received many platinum and gold certifications globally and sold over five million copies. In addition, it was honored with a Grammy nomination at the 2009 Grammy awards.

In the 2000s, super producer Timbaland was having a moment. Not only had the beatmaker risen to fame thanks to his collaborative partnerships, first with R&B star Aaliyah and then with rapper Missy Elliott, but he became an international sensation when he started working with pop star Justin Timberlake.
So, what did Timbaland do? He continued to expand, releasing his popular sophomore album, Shock Value , in 2007 and the follow-up, Shock Value II , in 2009. But it was on the 2007 offering that Timbaland enjoyed one of his biggest successes, the single, “Give It to Me,” featuring Timberlake and smooth singer Nelly Furtado.
[RELATED: 5 Boy Bands We Couldn’t Get Enough of In the 1990s]
But what is the story behind the song? Let’s dive in and find out that answer and the meaning of the track, below.
Timbaland is nothing if not versatile. Known as a rap producer who has worked with the likes of Missy and Jay Z, Timbaland is more than a single-genre star. “Give It to Me” was a crossover pop hit, with big rhythms and big melodies. On the song, Timbaland seems to rap, but he’s also singing, bookended by Furtado and Timberlake, two of the era’s biggest hitmakers.
Each verse in the song is trash talk. The now-51-year-old Virginia-born Timothy Zachery Mosley (aka Timbaland) calls out producer Scott Storch in his verse. Storch, who previously worked with Timbaland and is known for collabs with Lil Wayne and 50 Cent, somehow got in Timbo’s cross-hairs.
Though Timbaland never calls out Storch by name, those in the know knew it was a diss against Timbaland’s former colleague. ,
When Timbo’ is in the party everybody put up their hands I get a half a mill’ for my beats, you get a couple gra-a-and Never gon’ see the day that I ain’t got the upper hand I’m respected from Californ-I-A way down to Japan I’m a real producer, and you just a piano man Your songs don’t top the charts, I heard ’em, I’m not a fa-a-an Niggas talkin’ greasy, I’m the one that gave them they chance Somebody need to tell ’em that they can’t do it like I can
In these lines, Timbaland is saying Storch isn’t a “real producer” and that even though Timbo gave Storch an early chance, the latter is coming back and “talkin’ greasy.”
In subsequent interviews, including with MTV News , Timbaland confirmed that he was talking about his former protege, with their beef beginning over a dispute regarding writing credits for Timberlake’s 2003 hit, “Cry Me a River.” For that song, Storch said he was the real person behind the track.
Rumors of the trash-talking don’t end there. Many fans have said that Furtado’s lines are directed at pop star Fergie, though Furtado denied those accusations.
I’m the type of girl that’ll look you dead in the eye, eye I’m real as they come if you don’t know why I’m fly-y-y-y-y I seen you to try switch it up, but girl, you ain’t that dope I’m the Wonder Woman, let me go get my rope I’m a supermodel and mommy, sí, mami Amnesty International, got Bangkok to Montauk on lock Love my ass and my abs in the video called “Promiscuous” My style is ri-dic-dic-diculous-ulous-ulous
When asked on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show if the lyrics were about Fergie, Furtado said, “Ummm, no,” she said. “I think Tim[baland] and I just got a little cheeky and we were like, let’s do a song about how great we are.”
As for Timberlake, his lyrics, fans say, seem to be directed at Prince. Could this be true? Well, when Timberlake released his hit “SexyBack” in 2006, the Purple One took a bit of an issue with the song, saying , “For whoever is claiming they are bringing sexy back, sexy never left!”
So, biting back, Timberlake took aim in his lyrics for the song, saying,
Could you speak up and stop mu-mumbling? I don’t think you came in clear When you’re sittin’ on the top, it’s hard to hear you from way up here Now I saw you tryna act cute on TV, “Just let me clear the air” We missed you on the charts last week, damn, that’s right, you wasn’t there If s-sexy never left, then why is everybody on my shi-i-it? Don’t hate on me just because you didn’t come up with it So if you see us in the club, go on and walk the other way ‘Cause our run will never be over, not at least until we say
Timberlake was white hot at the moment. But still others believe he was also taking aim at former girlfriend Britney Spears’ then-new man, dancer Kevin Federline , who had been in the news at the time talking smack about Timberlake, who had recently released several songs bashing Britney’s promiscuity, including “Cry Me a River” and “What Goes Around… Comes Around.”
In the end, this smash club hit, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, was both the fire and the smoke. It was a jam many shook hips to and one that caused rifts in the world of popular music. It’s a weapon and a relief. It’s many things at once. Yes, it’s Timbaland’s calling card.

Find answers to frequently asked questions about the song and explore its deeper meaning
In an interview with Interview Magazine , Madonna had this to say about the song:
Give It 2 Me, very anthemic. I basically wrote it so I could have a great time doing it in a stadium. The words are very autobiographical. ‘Got no boundaries, got no limits. […] Don’t stop me now. […] If it’s against the law, arrest me.’ […] Yes, that’s me. It’s the provocative me. The boring, predictable me."

Do the historic thing, President Joe Biden. Give the Democratic Party our independence.
It would be the most executive order the world has ever seen. It is utterly within your power to give America its first woman President. Grant history that gift. Grant your legacy that gift. It would complete a career defining, democracy celebrating suite of sound service.
You were the first man to follow a Black man into the Oval Office, the first Vice President to serve under a President of color. You were the first President to serve with a Black Vice President, and the first President to serve with a female Vice President. What better way to complete this progressive apotheosis than to hand the reins over to that same, wildly capable, utterly prepared professional partner of yours? Let Kamala Harris become the first female President of the United States. Let it be on your terms, with your blessing. Don’t let this devolve. Seize the magnitude and the potential of this moment. It would be the most noble, transformative gesture many of us could imagine. Open the field back up, like you seemed to indicate you would when you first ran. Let Vice President Harris see us to the convention in August, and then let the delegates look with fresh eyes at the pool, and decide who will see us through to November.
If you drag us through the next five months, most of us will hang in with you, but we will be weary, disappointed, and chagrined by what can only start to feel like a certain degree of hubris on the part of your campaign. And if the outcome is not what we hope, the good-hearted, value-driven bipartisan spirit of your last 40 years will be reduced to the single truth that you lead us into an uncharted abyss of four more years with a man who is, by all scrupulous accounts, an enemy to the constitution and to democracy itself.
We trusted you. We are putting our hope in your hands once more. You are already a history maker and a man of loyalty, competence, and fortitude. Surprise us all with one last act of profound service, optimism, and imagination. Do the thing the other side is counting on you not to. See past ego into the world of elemental legacy. What I’m calling for now is a historic act of humility, self-sacrifice, and good faith. Don’t risk going down fighting when there are ready and able standard bearers who are still fresh for the race, and could lead the side to a more decisive victory. At least then, no matter the outcome, we will know you did everything you could, and more importantly, we will know you are still a man able to be moved by the will of your people, and a man good to his first word .

The Buffalo Bills have delivered their fans plenty of heartbreak over the years, but they’ve also brought their fair share of great players to Western New York.
Whether it was on the AFL Championship teams, the struggling squads in their early days in the NFL , the 1990s Super Bowl (losing) juggernauts, or today’s Josh Allen -led rosters, the franchise has always had interesting players, no matter what their record.
After back-to-back AFL championships in 1964 and 1965, the Bills joined the league during the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. Since then, the franchise has had its fair share of ups and downs, most notably making (and losing) four straight Super Bowls from 1990 to 1993.
While this list of the best Buffalo Bills players of all time is dominated by those famed early '90s teams, it also includes a star from the '70s and a modern-day superstar.
Where does the recently departed Stefon Diggs rank among the greatest Bills wideouts of all time?
While bills fans might not want to acknowledge it, o.j. simpson's exploits on the field in the 1970s make him the best player in franchise history.
Bills fans won’t want to hear it, but the truth of the matter is that Orenthal James Simpson is the best player in team history.
As problematic as Simpson was as a person once his playing days were done, he was just that good on the field in the NFL. The No. 1 overall pick in the 1969 NFL Draft, “The Juice” played nine seasons in Buffalo, racking up 10,183 rushing yards and 57 rushing touchdowns.
Simpson struggled during his first three seasons, as head coaches John Rauch and Harvey Johnson failed to figure out the best way to use him. However, when Lou Saban took over in 1972, Nick’s dad unleashed his running back on arguably the greatest half-decade stretch in NFL history.
From 1972 to 1976, Simpson made five Pro Bowls and five All-Pro teams and finished in the top four of Offensive Player of the Year voting five times and the top four of the MVP voting four times. He also led the NFL in rushing yards in four of those seasons and all-purpose yards in three.
The 1973 campaign was the pièce de resistance. Simpson became the first player in NFL history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single season (2,003), averaging a staggering 143.1 yards in 14 games en route to winning MVP and OPOY.
Sadly, in 2024, you can’t talk about the late O.J. Simpson without also mentioning that he was a likely double-murderer and a convicted kidnapper and armed robber.
That said, from a pure football perspective, that incredible five-season stretch makes him the best player in Bills history.
The bills de was dominant for a long period of time and is still the nfl's all-time sack leader.
The second-best player in Bills' history did things much differently than O.J. Simpson on the field, and not just because he played defense. Bruce Smith makes this list not because of an astronomical stretch but because of sustained excellence over a long period of time.
Another No. 1 overall pick, Smith joined the Bills from Virginia Tech in the 1985 NFL Draft and became the anchor of a defense that helped lead the franchise to a record four straight Super Bowl appearances.
Over his 15 seasons in Buffalo, Smith posted double-digit sacks 12 times. He only missed the mark in his rookie season, then in 1991, when he only played five games due to injury, and in his final Bills campaign in 1999 at the age of 36.
And he did it all as a 3-4 defensive end, a position known more for stout run stuffers than all-time great sack masters.
All told, Smith took down opposing QBs 171.0 times while with Buffalo, which earned him 11 Pro Bowl appearances, 11 All-Pro nods, and two Defensive Player of the Year Awards. He is also, to this day, second all-time in playoff sacks with 14.5.
Those two DPOY trophies came six seasons apart, in 1990 and 1996, which illustrates how good Smith was for such a long stretch.
Bruce Smith wasn’t flashy; he was just dominant, which may be why he doesn’t always get the credit he deserves as an all-time great defender. But with 200.0 sacks to his name, he is still the NFL's career leader and will continue to be for a long time.
The conductor of the k-gun offense may not have won the big one, but what he accomplished can't be ignored.
The face of those early 1990s Bills team is Jim Kelly , and that — as much as his stats on the field — make him the third-best player in Buffalo’s history.
Kelly hails from Western Pennsylvania, but by 1983, the Miami Hurricanes quarterback was way more South Beach than Steel City. That’s why he turned down the Bills when they drafted him at No. 14 overall in the 1983 draft in favor of the USFL’s Houston Gamblers.
However, “Machine Gun” Kelly made his way to the NFL by 1986 and morphed back into that rough and tough Rust Belt guy he was growing up in East Brady, PA.
Kelly played in a golden generation of QBs, and he never won the big one like Joe Montana . He didn’t have the athleticism of John Elway or the quick release of Dan Marino . But running the revolutionary no-huddle K-Gun offense, Kelly was a maestro in the shotgun.
He only led the league in touchdown passes once (33 in 1991) and made five Pro Bowls and just two All-Pro teams, but taking his franchise to four straight Super Bowls is a feat that may never be duplicated, and that is what puts him third on this list.
The ultimate professional didn't get the accolades of some of his counterparts, but he was vital to the bills.
Jim Kelly likely wouldn’t be on this list without his No. 1 target, wide receiver Andre Reed .
Reed never made a First-Team All-Pro squad with wideouts like Jerry Rice, Sterling Sharpe, Michael Irvin, Andre Rison, and Herman Moore holding down most of those spots in the early '90s, but he put up 13,095 yards and 86 touchdowns in 15 seasons in Buffalo. And he did earn two Second-Team selections, so it wasn't as if he was never recognized for his efforts.
The 1985 fourth-round pick out of Kutztown University was among the best pass-catchers in the league for a decade and a half, and that deserves recognition.
Josh allen is only scratching the surface of his career, but he's already put his name among the bills greats.
With apologies to Thurman Thomas, Josh Allen edges out “The Thurman-ator” as the fifth-best player in Bills history just six seasons into his NFL career.
From the time the Bills’ Big Four of Thomas, Kelly, Reed, and Smith retired in the late 1990s to the 2018 NFL Draft, Buffalo was arguably one of the worst franchises in all of North American professional sports.
That all changed when the big man from Firebaugh, California, showed up that year.
Like Kelly, Allen is smack in the middle of another golden QB generation, and while he hasn’t won like Patrick Mahomes , racked up MVPs like Lamar Jackson , or even made a Super Bowl like Joe Burrow , he has revitalized the organization. And with his incredible running and passing ability, Allen has established himself as the most dangerous all-around signal-caller in the NFL.
Allen already has 22,703 passing yards, 167 passing touchdowns, 3,611 rushing yards, and 53 rushing touchdowns in his six seasons. He’s also led the Bills to AFC East domination, taking home the last four consecutive divisional crowns.
When the dust settles on the Josh Allen era in Buffalo, the QB could easily be the best player in franchise history and the only Bills signal-caller with a Lombardi Trophy. For now, though, he comes in fifth on this list.
All stats courtesy of Pro Football Reference unless stated otherwise.
Jim Kelly and Josh Allen are givens, but who's next on the list of the five greatest QBs in Bills history?
University of Michigan Presidential Debate Expert Aaron Kall calls President Joe Biden’s uneven debate performance on Thursday night “probably the worst performance of a candidate, certainly an incumbent candidate, ever.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden’s halting debate performance has led some in his own party to begin questioning whether he should be replaced on the ballot before November.
The latest on the Biden-Trump debate
There is no evidence Biden is willing to end his campaign. And it would be nearly impossible for Democrats to replace him unless he chooses to step aside.
Here’s why:
Every state has already held its presidential primary. Democratic rules say that the delegates Biden won should support him at the party’s upcoming national convention unless he tells them he’s leaving the race.
The president indicated that he had no plans to do that, telling supporters in Atlanta shortly after he left the debate stage, “Let’s keep going.” Biden campaign spokesperson Lauren Hitt was even clearer, saying Friday: “Of course he’s not dropping out.”
The conventions and their rules are controlled by the political parties. The Democratic National Committee could convene before the convention opens on Aug. 19 and change how things will work, but that isn’t likely as long as Biden wants to continue seeking reelection.
The current rules read: “Delegates elected to the national convention pledged to a presidential candidate shall in all good conscience reflect the sentiments of those who elected them.”
The vice president is Biden’s running mate, but that doesn’t mean she can swap in for him at the top of the ticket by default. Biden also can’t decree that she replace him should he suddenly decide to leave the race.
The Democratic National Convention is being held in Chicago, but the party has announced that it will hold a virtual roll call to formally nominate Biden before in-person proceedings begin. The exact date for the roll call has not yet been set.
If Biden opts to abandon his reelection campaign, Harris would likely join other top Democratic candidates looking to replace him. But that would probably create a scenario where she and others end up lobbying individual state delegations at the convention for their support.
That hasn’t happened for Democrats since 1960, when John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson jockeyed for votes during that year’s Democratic convention in Los Angeles.
In addition to the vice president, others that had endorsed Biden in 2024 while harboring their own presidential aspirations for future cycles include California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Illinois Gov. J. B. Pritzker and California Rep. Ro Khanna.
Still others who Biden bested during the party’s 2020 presidential primary could also try again, including Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, as well as Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
If Biden were to abruptly leave the race, conservative groups have suggested they will file lawsuits around the country, potentially questioning the legality of the Democratic candidate’s name on the ballot.
But Elaine Kamarck, a senior fellow in governance studies at the Brookings Institution in Washington, who wrote a book about the presidential nominating process and is also a member of the Democratic National Committee’s rulemaking arm, said that courts have consistently stayed out of political primaries as long as parties running them weren’t doing anything that would contradict other constitutional rights, such as voter suppression based on race.
What to know about the 2024 Election
“This is very clear constitutionally that this is in the party’s purview,” Kamarck said in an interview before the debate. “The business of nominating someone to represent a political party is the business of the political party.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is seeking to put the focus squarely onto Donald Trump following his uneven debate performance last week.
Watch Biden’s remarks in the player above.
Speaking Monday after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling granting broad immunity from prosecution to Trump and other presidents, Biden said the high court’s ruling had undermined the rule of law. The court’s conservative majority ruling makes it all but certain that the Republican will not face trial in Washington ahead of the November election over his actions during the violent riot on Jan. 6, 2021.

“No one is above the law, not even the president of the United States,” Biden said from the White House.
During his brief remarks he made no mention of last week’s debate or his performance, and did not take questions.

Biden seemed relaxed and confident, striking a clear and crisp tone and looking tanned and rested — all of which was in stark contrast to his often halting performance during last week’s debate, when his face was notably pale. The president also had the benefit of a teleprompter for his remarks about the court, something he didn’t have while facing off with Trump.
“I know I will respect the limits of presidential power as I have for the three-and-a-half years, but any president, including Donald Trump, will now be free to ignore the law,” Biden said.
For all the public efforts to shift the focus away from his uneven performance that spooked donors and prompted Democratic anxiety, there have been private discussions on what more Biden could do to counteract what Americans saw during the debate, when he gave convoluted answers, trailed off at times, occasionally stared blankly and sounded raspy-voiced.
There has been talk about whether Biden should be seen more in public through town-hall-style events or interviews and press conferences, which he has generally avoided during his time in office.
But most in his orbit are waiting on more substantial polling to come back in order to assess how bad the damage was before altering course in any substantial way. That’s according to four Biden advisers who were not authorized to speak publicly about internal discussions and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Biden’s team may not alter anything at all. Many think — or hope — the fraught moment will pass, particularly after Biden’s family encouraged him to stay in the race and keep fighting during a huddle at Camp David on Sunday.
Campaign officials said Monday they had nothing to announce on new events. They said Biden would be campaigning as he has been, hitting battleground states as he has already been doing for months.
An ad released Monday was called “I Know” using clips from Biden’s post-debate North Carolina rally, where he said, “When you get knocked down, you get back up.”
Quentin Fulks, Biden’s principal deputy campaign manager, put the focus on Trump in a call with reporters, saying, “When you do see President Biden out on the trail, he will be talking about the reasons why Americans should be scared of Donald Trump, as he has been for months.”
Even before the debate, the age of the 81-year-old Democratic president had been a liability with voters, and the prime-time faceoff put the issue front-and-center before perhaps the largest audience he will have in the four months until Election Day. CNN, which held the debate, said more than 51 million people watched.
“I think his age was baked in, to a large degree, and I know he can do better than he did on Thursday night. I expected to see better. I’m not sure other voters did,” said Jennifer Palmieri, a White House communications director during the Obama administration and a spokesperson for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.
She added that, tactically, the campaign has responded by promoting Biden’s strong speech in North Carolina on Friday and by continuing to post strong fundraising numbers. Palmieri also said Biden might also want to sit for more interviews to continue to show that the debate was an anomaly.
“Their focus needs to be on getting him in front of voters that matter the most, and more interviews should be part of that. Don’t be like Trump in your own little universe,” she said. “For now, we’re early, but what they’re doing is working.”
There’s a sense that voters may now be watching Biden more closely for signs that show one way or another whether his debate debacle was a blip — whether he is, as he says, capable of doing the job.
Alan Kessler, a lawyer and member of the Biden campaign’s national finance team, has spent days calming jittery donors, telling them what he says he has personally witnessed when he’s seen the president — that he’s “lucid, strong as he’s always been.”
“To the extent it’s necessary, I’m reassuring people,” Kessler said.
Rebecca Katz, a strategist who worked with Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman’s winning campaign in 2022, saw potential parallels in Fetterman’s comeback from a shaky debate performance after he had a stroke.
Fetterman’s team highlighted especially bombastic comments his opponent made about abortion during that debate, and also had the candidate travel extensively afterward. He did lots of local television interviews to ensure voters in key markets saw him outside of clips from the debate.
“It’s not a perfect comparison but there is a blueprint for the Biden campaign,” Katz said. “You can have a rough debate night and still win.”
Biden expressed interest in doing at least one interview. At a Saturday fundraiser in East Hampton, New York, Biden said he had spoken with the broadcaster Howard Stern, who had interviewed him in April, where he answered open-ended questions mostly about his early years.
The president told the crowd he was ready for another sit-down with Stern, saying: “I had a great time on his show. And I’m actually going to take a chance in going back.”
The Democratic National Committee and Biden’s campaign, meanwhile, kept up damage control, holding an evening finance call. Over the weekend, they held calls with donors and one with dozens of committee members across the country — some of the most influential members of the party. They offered a rosy assessment of the path forward and gave no opportunity for others on the call to ask questions.
Multiple committee members on the weekend call, most granted anonymity to talk about the private discussion, described feeling like they were being asked to ignore a serious predicament.
Campaign officials have said there was no discussion “whatsoever” of Biden exiting the race nor of any staff shakeups following the debate.
Democratic Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania said he thought voters were more concerned with the issues at stake, anyway. “I’ve been at this a while, and I know his work,” Casey said.
The window of opportunity for that is shrinking anyway. The Democratic National Committee has announced that it will use a virtual roll call to formally make him the nominee before the convention begins in Chicago on Aug. 19. But when that will happen and what it will look like is still unclear.
