LegalZoom (LZ) can be a good service for someone with a do-it-yourself approach to business formation.

If you’re shopping around for a low-cost LLC formation package with articles of organization and name check services included, LZ’s Basic Plan will do the trick. But you’ll have to take care of your operating agreement and EIN on your own, and LZ’s registered agent services will cost you an extra $249 per year.

LegalZoom stands out amongst the competition for its unlimited 30-minute legal consultations, included with the Premium Plan for the first three months. LZ also has a 60-day, 100% satisfaction guarantee and Wix websites to build your business’s online presence are complimentary with every plan.

LegalZoom LLC overview and facts

LegalZoom was established as a tech company in 2001. Since then, LZ has added business formation services, tax filing/advising and other business and personal services to its roster. The company now has corporate offices in Los Angeles, Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area.

While LegalZoom offers a $0 LLC formation package, the price tag isn’t the only thing to look for when deciding whether or not to sign up. According to William Fry, CEO of Beacon, a company that assists with buying and selling small businesses, you should also focus on customer reviews.

“Some providers have terrible customer service,” warned Fry, “so you’ll regret going with a service that appeared cheaper on the front end but cost you more in time and headaches on the back end.”

Most customers have positive things to say about LegalZoom. On Trustpilot, over 80% of LegalZoom reviews are five stars. Most customers comment on how easy it is to use LegalZoom and their positive experiences with customer service.

LegalZoom LLC plans and pricing

LegalZoom is one of many LLC formation services that has packages starting at $0, plus state filing fees. But you should be prepared to pay state filing fees of $50 to $500 or more, and depending on your needs, the $0 package may not include everything it takes to form your business.

“Feature-wise, you definitely want filing of your articles of organization and registered agent services, but the EIN is so easy to D.I.Y. it’s not worth paying for,” said Fry.

With LegalZoom, registered agent services aren’t included in any package, so you’ll have to pay $249 per year to get the services on top of your plan’s fee. By comparison, Bizee includes complimentary registered agent services in its $0 package for the first year and charges $119 annually afterward.

While registered agent services may be cheaper through some competitors, most business formation companies charge fees for EINs and operating agreements, just like LegalZoom. However, unlike some competitors, LegalZoom’s offers live chat support, a free app and a website, regardless of which plan you sign up for.

LegalZoom’s Basic plan costs $0, plus state fees. According to LegalZoom, this plan is for someone who can do most of the work themselves and who only wants the necessities for making their business official. (Namely, filing of your articles of organization.)

For just the cost of your state filing fees, LegalZoom’s Basic plan comes with the following:

  • Articles of organization filing.
  • Name check service.
  • Wix website.

If you go directly through Wix, you’ll pay a minimum of $16 per month for a website.

The mid-tier plan from LZ costs $249 plus state fees. LegalZoom recommends the Pro Plan for customers who need the essentials for compliant operations but who can do most of the work themselves.

For the $249 Pro plan, LegalZoom customers get these additional features that don’t come with the Basic plan:

  • Operating agreement.
  • Tax consultation with a small business specialist.
  • Consultation with a business insurance agent.

If purchased separately, you’ll pay $79 for LegalZoom’s EIN filing.

The Premium plan from LegalZoom costs $299, plus state fees. This top-tier plan is recommended for customers who want upfront advice from attorneys to help ensure they properly form their business.

When you opt for the Premium plan — which is $50 more than the Pro plan — you get all of the features listed above, plus a three-month subscription to the following services:

  • Unlimited 30-minute attorney consultations.
  • Attorney review of your legal contracts and documents.
  • Monthly copyright registration.
  • Access to a library of legal forms.

Note that attorney consultations are limited to one call per business topic, and you’ll be charged $49 per month for the legal services in this plan after the month period ends. Alternatively, legal advising is available through LegalZoom’s Business Advisory Plan for $469.00 a year ($39.09 per month) or $ 43.17 per month, which would be billed at $259.00 every six months.

LegalZoom add-ons and optional features

LegalZoom’s three LLC formation packages are bare-bones when it comes to business formation features, but there are plenty of services you can add to your package for an extra fee. Add-ons can be chosen during the set-up process, and they include:

  • Registered agent services: $249 per year.
  • Compliance calendar: $69 per year.
  • Tax plan: $1,188 to $1,428 per year.
  • Legal protection plan: $469 per year.
  • Standard annual report filing: $99, plus state fees.
  • Rushed annual report filing: $119, plus state fees.
  • EIN filing: $79.

Registered agent services

Businesses must designate a registered agent in each state where they conduct business to ensure that time-sensitive legal, government and tax documents are received and promptly forwarded to the company’s headquarters.

Since registered agents are required to list their physical locations (P.O. box addresses are not allowed), Hal Brand, a CPA in southern California, suggests “home-based business owners use registered agents within their own states, so their home addresses aren’t exposed.”

LegalZoom’s registered agent services are easy to sign up for and use. They cost $249 per year per state. If you purchase these services as a stand-alone option, you will not be refunded if you decide to cancel.

LegalZoom is also among the most expensive options, with companies like BetterLegal ($90 per year) and InCorp ($129 per year) offering cheaper services.

If your company already has a registered agent designated in your formation documents, LegalZoom will file the required change in registered agent documents with the state for no additional charge.

Once any mail is received, it takes five to 14 days for documents to be scanned and uploaded to your account. In comparison, there are many competitors that offer same-day delivery of documents, like Bizee .

This service also includes access to email or SMS alerts from LegalZoom’s compliance calendar, which is typically an extra $69 per year. These alerts warn subscribers about critical tax and annual report deadlines to help avoid incurring filing penalties. LegalZoom’s registered agent services also include $1 million in identity theft protection and credit monitoring for you and your business through Experian.

If you’re on a tight budget, you might want to go with another option, especially since the registered agent services aren’t included in any of LegalZoom’s business formation packages. Like its competitors, LegalZoom offers registered agent services in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Business advisory plan

If you want the legal perks that come with the Premium plan, you might consider a Business Advisory plan instead. LegalZoom’s Business Advisory plan includes:

  • Thirty-minute attorney consultation per legal matter.
  • Contract/legal document review (up to 10 pages).
  • Annual business evaluation (with the 12-month plan only).
  • Unlimited downloads from legal form library.

These plans are available for an annual payment of $469 a year ($39.08 a month) or $259 ($43.16 a month) billed every six months.

LegalZoom customer support and experience

LegalZoom offers live chat support on its website, and you can use chat to connect to an agent in less than a minute. Phone support is also available Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on the weekends from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. PST.

LegalZoom vs. ZenBusiness

If you go through LegalZoom or ZenBusiness, it can get expensive to purchase all of the key business formation services you need.

LegalZoom offers a better price on one-time EIN filing, but if you also want a registered agent and an operating agreement, you could save $24 per year by going through ZenBusiness. Plus, ZenBusiness has excellent customer reviews on TrustPilot and only around 95 closed complaints on BBB for the last year, versus LegalZoom’s over 400 closed complaints.

LegalZoom vs. Bizee

Bizee is another business formation company that offers free packages, and just like LegalZoom, the $0 package from Bizee does not include an EIN or operating agreement.

It’s free to file with the IRS for your EIN, but some business owners prefer the help of an LLC service .

If you want to spring for help with your EIN, operating agreement and registered agent services, you’ll want to choose one of the LLC services paid plans. Both companies offer EIN filing and operating agreements with their mid-tier plans. However, you’ll save quite a bit of money by choosing Bizee’s Gold plan over LegalZoom because Bizee includes a free year of registered agent services with its plan.

Is LegalZoom right for your business?

LegalZoom can be a cost-effective option for someone who doesn’t mind doing most of their own paperwork. While the $0 package lacks some of the features you might eventually want, like an EIN, it can be easy enough to file for an EIN on your own .

If you spring for a pricier package, you’ll still have to pay for some of the business formation services you may need, like registered agent services. For most customers, the legal consultations that come with the Platinum plan are likely to be the most valuable feature. Still, you’ll have to budget your consultation time wisely since you only get 30 minutes of advising per topic.

There are also no discounts with LegalZoom. However, if you own a law or tax firm, you can get discounts for registered agents in multiple states through Legalinc, a fully-owned subsidiary of LegalZoom.

If weekend support is important to your business, LegalZoom offers nine hours of customer service access on Saturdays and Sundays. And some of its services, such as unlimited document storage and instant compliance alerts, are helpful tools. But, for most small businesses, a more affordable option will likely be the right choice.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

LegalZoom offers all the basic services you’ll need to start an LLC, but they can get pricey if you need multiple services, like annual report filing, registered agent services or an EIN, since you may have to pay a separate fee for each one.

LegalZoom does not provide annual report filing or alerts with any of its LLC formation plans.

Their compliance package is available for $280 a year, and it includes filing of your annual reports, a compliance calendar to help you monitor upcoming filing dates and alerts . LegalZoom guarantees that they’ll pay your fine or penalty if they miss a deadline while you’re subscribed to their compliance package.

Customers with Premium plans from LegalZoom will automatically be charged $49 per month for legal service s after 30 days. Some customers have filed complaints with the BBB about unexpected, recurring charges, so you may want to monitor your payment account for unexpected transactions while using LegalZoom.

LegalZoom guarantees a refund for customers who are not 100% satisfied during the first 60 days. Refunds do not include fees that have already been paid to third parties, such as state filing fees and attorney fees.

LegalZoom offers a variety of business formation services, including registered agent services. LegalZoom also offers legal advice for business and personal matters, including:

LegalZoom offers comprehensive and customizable legal services to assist people who want to create their own LLC. For those thinking about working with a professional LLC formation company like LegalZoom to start a business, we’ve included four of LegalZoom’s key pros and cons for you to review below.

  • Offers LLC formation packages all including a customizable website
  • Provides high-quality customer service
  • Staffed by a diverse network of legal experts with industry experience
  • Difficult-to-locate pricing for some of the extra services LegalZoom offers
  • Slow chat support on the website
  • Free package includes fewer business services in comparison to some competitors’ free packages

LegalZoom was founded in 2001 by a team of professionals committed to making legal services available and accessible to everyone. Over the past two decades, LegalZoom has grown and expanded its services.

LegalZoom has assisted entrepreneurs in starting more than two million businesses. As a result, LegalZoom customers leverage and benefit from its extensive industry experience and refined expertise.

For those looking to start a new business, LegalZoom provides a wide array of services – and not just for emerging LLCs. For instance, LegalZoom offers services to help you start a sole proprietorship, a limited partnership, a limited liability partnership, a C-corporation, an S-corporation and even a nonprofit.

But what if you’ve already started your small business? LegalZoom also offers additional legal services for existing companies that support their ongoing operation and growth. For example, LegalZoom offers registered agent services, assistance acquiring business licenses and permits, annual report services, trademark registrations and more. By partnering with LegalZoom, customers can rest assured that their business is and will continue to maintain compliance with both local and federal laws and regulations.

How LegalZoom Works

LegalZoom helps simplify the process of legally forming your own LLC by doing the bulk of the heavy lifting. LegalZoom will help identify which forms and documents you need to fill out, identify where to file your business documents and file everything for you. Depending on which LLC formation package you purchase from LegalZoom, the company will also provide further services to help you successfully set up and run your business.

LegalZoom’s user-friendly platform provides a straightforward business formation process that will save you time (and confusion). Even if you haven’t decided what organizational structure is best for your new business, LegalZoom can help you determine which option suits your needs and goals best by answering just 10 simple questions .

Alternatively, if you’ve already created your company, LegalZoom’s platform provides a comprehensive list of the legal services available to support existing businesses.

LegalZoom doesn’t require users to create an account to purchase any of its individual services or to order one of its LLC formation packages. However, customers will need to create an account eventually to access various information and their business documents later. Creating an account with your information before making any purchases will make subsequent orders easier to fill out.

After a customer has completed an order, LegalZoom will proceed to file the information with the appropriate legal body or bodies. Once the filing process is concluded, copies of the associated forms will be provided to the customer for their records via posted mail. Depending on the services provided and the nature of the associated documents, these copies will also be made available online.

If you’re ready to start your own company, LegalZoom is your one-stop shop for all your business and legal service needs. Not only does LegalZoom offer customers three tiers of customizable LLC formation packages, but it also offers a wide spread of legal services that empower business owners to get just the level of support they need.

From LLC formation services to day-to-day business operations, LegalZoom’s team of industry experts is ready to help both new and existing businesses. We’ve outlined some of  LegalZoom’s most popular services for you below.

Online Document Preparation

Starting your own LLC involves a lot of paperwork – both before filing your business with the Secretary of State and after. LegalZoom’s online document preparation services help simplify and streamline the process so you don’t have to struggle through nuanced language or worry about missing any crucial forms.

Customers of LegalZoom’s documentation services benefit from access to a repository of more than 150 attorney-drafted legal forms. Moreover, users can easily edit and customize legal documents to meet their business needs without leaving LegalZoom’s platform.

For instance, LegalZoom’s legal document library includes articles of organization forms for LLCs, operating agreements, EIN applications, DBA forms, employee non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), amendment of agreement forms, product supply agreements and more.

Business Formation

From start to finish, LegalZoom provides legal services and guidance that will help you start your new business. For example, you need to decide on a name for your new business before you can officially file your articles of organization. LegalZoom’s name check service enables customers to determine if their preferred name meets legal requirements or if an existing business has already claimed it.

Not only does LegalZoom provide business formation services for LLCs, but it also offers formation services for additional business structures. LegalZoom can help you form a sole proprietorship, a limited partnership, a limited liability partnership, a C-corporation and an S-corporation, and a nonprofit.

Operating Agreement

Since an operating agreement is an internal document private to the company, whether your business is legally required to establish an operating agreement depends on the state where your company is registered. However, even though operating agreements are not filed on a state or federal level, it’s always considered best practice to draw one up.

While LegalZoom’s upper-tiered LLC formation packages include an operating agreement, business owners can also purchase this customizable service a la carte. So whether you’re starting an LLC or a corporation, LegalZoom’s operating agreement services will help you set up parameters for how you run your business and also help you protect your assets.

Digital Welcome Packet

Customers partnering with LegalZoom to start a new business receive a special service feature particular to LegalZoom: a digital welcome packet.

Once your LLC is officially registered, the welcome packet includes a step-by-step checklist to help guide you through the subsequent stages of creating and running your business.

Articles of Organization

The articles of organization document is the very root of your new business’s existence. This form is typically filed with your Secretary of State and asks you to fill in key information about your company.

For example, articles of organization forms often require you to specify your business’s name and mailing address, as well as identify a registered agent and their contact information.

LegalZoom will help you with the necessary documentation and ensure you correctly fill out the form. Once the articles of organization are complete, LegalZoom then takes care of correctly filing your paperwork with the appropriate Secretary of State.

Customizable Website

As necessary as it is, creating a website can be a time-consuming and daunting challenge. By partnering with Wix, LegalZoom makes setting up a business website simple and painless. Customers receive a fully functional website generated by Wix that users can easily customize and tailor to their business needs.

LegalZoom provides customers of all three LLC formation package tiers with a professional business website powered by Wix.

Document Storage

LegalZoom utilizes multiple layers of encryption to enforce the secure storage of sensitive information. Customers can rest assured that all the personal and business information provided to LegalZoom is securely stored in the cloud.

In light of LegalZoom’s extensive legal services, not all documents are accessible online. In this case, your documents will be mailed to you. However, the website indicates that LegalZoom’s team may expand this feature in the future.

Legal Document Templates

Customers who purchase access to LegalZoom’s repository of more than 150 legal forms and documents can save valuable time and energy adjusting them to fit their business needs.

LegalZoom simplifies the documentation process by asking various questions relevant to the specific business form at hand. LegalZoom then plugs in the user-provided information to generate the legal document for customers to download as a PDF and print.

LegalZoom’s platform also provides a text editor that enables users to go in, edit and customize their legal documents themselves, as needed.

Some popular document templates include mutual nondisclosure agreements, independent contractor agreements, sale of goods agreements and consulting service agreements.

Legal Advice

Unlike several LLC formation service competitors, LegalZoom offers its customers legal support and advice. For those who lack a strong grasp of the legal aspects of starting a new business, this service is a key benefit of partnering with LegalZoom.

LegalZoom’s Basic LLC formation package doesn’t include legal advice services, but the Pro and Premium offer different levels of legal support.

The Pro package provides customers with small business and insurance guidance services. This includes discussing asset coverage options and discussions on taxes, legal compliance and other topics to help set your business up for success.

The Premium package includes the above legal support services and a subscription to LegalZoom’s Business Attorney Plan. This plan provides customers with an unlimited number of 30-minute consultations with professional attorneys. The Business Attorney Plan also provides customers with a professional legal review of business forms and documents.

It’s important to note that LegalZoom’s Premium LLC formation package only includes a free 30-day subscription to its Business Attorney Plan. After the free trial, the subscription will renew automatically every month for a fee of $49.

Registered Agent Services

To officially file and register a new LLC, you must identify a registered agent for your business on the articles of organization form. Although many companies that provide LLC formation assistance include registered agent services in their packages, it’s important to note that LegalZoom does not.

Customers purchasing any of LegalZoom’s three LLC formation packages can add registered agent services to their orders for $199 annually.

For those who have already created their LLC, you can purchase their registered agent services a la carte. However, the price differs when only ordering LegalZoom’s registered agent services. Instead of $199, this will cost you $249 a year.

Basic Package

LegalZoom’s Basic LLC formation package is perfect for those who are interested in starting their own business and are confident in their abilities to handle most of the legwork themselves. Costing only the fees necessary to file your LLC with the state, LegalZoom’s Basic package helps customers complete their articles of organization, access their business name check service and create a customizable business website powered by Wix.

The Basic package also provides customers with a digital welcome packet and email and chat support. The digital welcome packet includes a checklist of what to do after officially filing your LLC with the Secretary of State.

The key advantage of LegalZoom’s Basic package is its low price. However, the Basic package only provides the bare minimum to help customers legally register their new LLC. Compared with other free business formation services, LegalZoom’s package isn’t as robust.

Since the Basic LLC formation package is so limited in the business services it provides, LegalZoom pushes a lot of its add-on features and services during the ordering process.

Pro Package

LegalZoom’s Pro package carries a fee of $249 plus state filing fees. This package includes everything from the Basic LLC formation package in addition to an operating agreement, a federal tax ID number (EIN) and a financial account authorization letter. The Pro package also provides small business and insurance guidance services, including a personalized consultation with a licensed insurance agent and a consultation with a small business specialist. Lastly, the Pro package includes one year of access to LegalZoom’s library of more than 150 customizable legal forms and documents, an unlimited number of eSignatures for one year and access to customer service and support via email, website chat and over the phone.

The main advantage of LegalZoom’s pro package is that it includes essential business documents necessary for legally operating a business. However, the change in price between LegalZoom’s Basic LLC formation package and its Pro formation package is notably substantial. Furthermore, like the Basic package, the Pro package doesn’t include registered agent services, a legal requirement for LLCs.

Premium Package

LegalZoom’s final tier of LLC formation packages is its Premium package, which costs customers $299 plus state filing fees. The Premium package includes all of the services provided in LegalZoom’s Basic and Pro packages, along with a handful of other features beneficial for those starting a new business that need more legal support and guidance.

Specifically, the Premium package enables customers to make an entity amendment within the first 30 days of purchasing this LLC formation package. Not only does LegalZoom take care of the amendment paperwork, but it will also expedite the filing process and subsequent delivery of customer document copies. However, customers may still be subject to state filing fees (if applicable).

The Premium package also supplies customers with a free 30-day trial subscription to LegalZoom’s Business Attorney Plan, which will automatically renew for a monthly fee of $49. This feature of LegalZoom’s Premium LLC formation package provides customers with unlimited access to 30-minute attorney consultation sessions concerning legal business topics. The Business Attorney Plan also enables customers to have all their legal documents and contracts reviewed by an experienced attorney from LegalZoom’s network in addition to monthly copyright registration services.

Lastly, customers can receive support by sending LegalZoom an email, using their website’s chat feature or by giving them a phone call.

Overall, LegalZoom’s Premium package offers the best value for its price. From a financial perspective, the jump in price from the Pro LLC formation package to LegalZoom’s Premium package is minimal compared to the extra features and services included. The Premium package is a solid choice for those who would feel more at ease knowing that they’ll have access to robust legal services and support throughout the whole LLC formation process.

However, even this upper-most tier of LegalZoom’s LLC formation packages lacks registered agent services.

Starting a new business is easy with LegalZoom’s help. No matter which formation package you choose, using LegalZoom to form a new LLC is a quick and relatively straightforward process that anyone can do.

Prepare Before You Start

From start to finish, LegalZoom provides contextual information and helpful suggestions as it guides you through each step of the business formation process. Of course, you can still take steps to make the filing process go even faster and more smoothly. For example, deciding on the name of your new business is a significant first step. Each state has its own rules and legal parameters regarding the naming of LLCs. As such, it’s wise to take the time to review the regulations of the state you’re going to register your business in before settling on a name for your new business.

For good measure, we also suggest coming up with a few backup ideas in case LegalZoom determines that your first choice is already taken. However, you can reduce the chances of this occurring:

  • At a federal level, you can look up your name ideas using the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS).
  • Find out if your name ideas have already been registered in your state. For example, if you’re creating an LLC in New York, you can look up your business name ideas on the Department of State’s Corporation and Business Entity Database .

Here are some additional components of your LLC checklist:

  • The state your business will be registered in and your business’s physical address
  • The purpose or nature of your LLC and associated industry
  • Registered agent information (if you wish to appoint a person or another entity other than LegalZoom)
  • The names of the other LLC members (if applicable)
  • The official start date of your LLC

Generally, a new business’s start date is when the articles of organization are filed with the Secretary of State. However, you may be able to specify a later date instead. Be sure to check your state’s associated rules and regulations.

To help you understand what to expect, we went through LegalZoom’s formation process. You can get a feel for the process and the different add-ons in our outline below.

  • Choose your LLC formation package.

To start the formation process, you’ll need to select a pricing package. For the purposes of our review, we choose LegalZoom’s free Basic package. However, we go over the different LLC formation packages in more detail later in this review.

  • Enter your business name.

In the first official step of forming your new LLC, LegalZoom asks for you to identify the name of your business. For those who haven’t quite settled on a name for their new company, LegalZoom allows users to skip this step and continue with the process.

  • Choose the state to register your LLC.

Next, you’ll be asked to identify the state where you want to register your new business.

  • Provide contact information.

You’ll then be asked to fill out some contact information, including your email address and phone number. While this step is optional, we suggest filling in your information so LegalZoom can quickly and easily contact you about your new LLC.

  • Identify your business’s industry type.

The following step will ask you to classify the industry that best describes your new business.

  • Click on the Next button.

This page identifies some documents and legal requirements necessary to form and operate your new LLC.

  • Select and identify your registered agent.

This step asks you to appoint the registered agent for your new company. While you can identify yourself as your LLC’s registered agent, LegalZoom tries to upsell its annual registered agent services on this page.

  • Add business documents to your order.

This next step is similar to the registered agent services offered on the previous page. However, in this step, LegalZoom allows users to add legally required documentation to their LLC formation package order.

However, LegalZoom promotes three different business documentation packages for customers. In other (and maybe a little confusing) words, this step provides the option to add a package to your package.

  • Add compliance services to your order.

The following step on the next page once again tries to upsell LegalZoom’s compliance services to customers forming a new LLC.

  • Add a business license report to your order.

In the next step, LegalZoom offers customers the option to add a service to their LLC formation package: a business license report. This report essentially tells you what permits and licenses are legally required to create and run your business. Between industry, state and federal regulations and requirements, determining what licenses your new business needs can be complex and confusing.

  • Add bookkeeping services to your order.

In the next step, customers can add bookkeeping services to their LLC formation package order.

Similar to the business documentation upsell options in Step 8, this step presents users with two of LegalZoom’s bookkeeping service plans.

  • Open a business bank account.

One of the final steps of the LLC formation process offers customers the opportunity to set up a new bank account just for their new business.

  • Enhance your order.

The next step of LegalZoom’s free LLC formation process gives customers two more upsell opportunities to enhance their orders. Users can opt for expedited processing of their new business for a fee of $99 or can select standard processing for no extra cost.

Finally, customers of LegalZoom’s Basic LLC formation package can add a Founder’s Kit to their order for an additional $99.

  • Review your order.

The last thing you need to do is to carefully review your order before continuing to the checkout page and paying LegalZoom for your customized LLC formation package.

After completing your order, LegalZoom will file your business’s information with the Secretary of State. Depending on if you opted for expedited processing, the turnaround time will take somewhere between one business day and two weeks. However, this service only applies to LegalZoom’s processing and doesn’t reflect state turnaround time for state processing.

Once the LLC filing process is complete, your business documents will be made available online in your account and mailed to you.

One of LegalZoom’s key strengths is its high-quality customer service and support experiences. You can quickly and easily contact LegalZoom over the phone, through their website chat or via email.

LegalZoom Additional Services Worth Noting

Not only does LegalZoom provide LLC formation services, but they also offer additional services that can be beneficial for someone starting their own business. You can check out some of them in our list below:

  • Entity name reservation: If you’ve come up with the perfect name for your new business, LegalZoom will help you ensure someone else doesn’t take the name before you’re ready to file your LLC’s articles of organization. LegalZoom’s entity name reservation service is available for $49 plus state filing fees.
  • Doing business as (DBA): If the name registered to your new business is long or clunky, LegalZoom can help you apply for a DBA name that’s shorter or more catchy. You can register your business’s DBA name with LegalZoom for $99 in addition to state filing fees.
  • Compliance calendar: LegalZoom understands that there are a lot of different dates and documents to keep track of when running a business to remain legally compliant. LegalZoom’s compliance calendar service is available for an annual fee of $69.
  • Business advisory plan: For those who have already officially formed their new businesses but would benefit from more legal support, LegalZoom offers two different business legal plan services. Both plans include the same robust set of features but differ in their subscription options. Customers can purchase LegalZoom’s six-month business advisory plan for a monthly fee of $43.17 or its 12-month plan for $39.09.
  • Business licenses: Depending on the industry, your business will require various licenses and permits to operate legally. Starting at $99, LegalZoom takes care of this legal hassle for you.
  • Certified copies of business documents: LegalZoom can also help companies get certified copies of all business documents that have been filed with the secretary of state. LegalZoom offers a Standard Package for $45 plus state filing fees and an expedited Rush Package for $75 plus state filing fees.
  • Certificate of good standing: LegalZoom can help existing businesses obtain a certificate of good standing, a document that verifies your business has complied with all legally required reports and state fees.
  • EIN: This service is only included in LegalZoom’s Pro and Premium packages. However, the EIN service can be purchased a la carte for $79.
  • Annual reports: LegalZoom’s annual report service can be purchased a la carte for $99 plus state filing fees (standard processing and shipping) or $119 plus state filing fees (expedited processing and shipping).

Starting your own business is an exciting decision – but it’s also a big one. As such, it’s essential to carefully consider all of your LLC formation service options before making decisions.

LegalZoom vs. Swyft Filings

Right out of the gate, LegalZoom has 14 years of business formation experience over Swyft Filings. LegalZoom has helped create a substantially larger number of businesses than Swyft Filings. For people who are apprehensive about the LLC formation process, this is a significant advantage of LegalZoom.

However, Swyft Filings offers more competitive processing times than LegalZoom, including same-day LLC filing. Swyft Filings also includes expedited shipping services within its two upper-tiered LLC formation packages.

LegalZoom vs. Incfile

Unlike LegalZoom and several other LLC formation competitors, all three of Incfile’s packages provide customers with one free year of registered agent services. On top of that, Incfile’s annual renewal rate of $119 is significantly lower than LegalZoom’s yearly fee of $199.

Incfile’s free LLC formation package also offers more customer support than LegalZoom’s free package does. While customers of LegalZoom’s Basic package have access to email and chat support, customers of Incfile’s correlating package have access to unlimited phone and email support.

LegalZoom vs. ZenBusiness

Comparing the companies side by side, LegalZoom offers access to attorneys and legal expertise that ZenBusiness lacks. Legal expertise aside, ZenBusiness’s prices are more competitive than many of LegalZoom’s. All three of ZenBusiness’s LLC formation package options include more business services when compared to LegalZoom’s packages.

For example, ZenBusiness’s lowest-tiered package includes one free year of compliance support, whereas LegalZoom customers will have to add that service to their order for a fee. ZenBusiness also includes a faster turnaround time for customers of their Pro and Premium LLC formation packages, whereas LegalZoom doesn’t offer expedited processing in any of their packages. Instead, LegalZoom customers must add this service to their order for $99.

However, ZenBusiness’s Pro and Premium packages are an annually billed service, while LegalZoom’s packages are priced as a one-time fee.

Who Is LegalZoom Best For?

LegalZoom offers a plethora of legal services that provide support for both new and existing small businesses. Customers have the option to select one of LegalZoom’s three LLC formation packages that provide their preferred level of business support. On top of that, LegalZoom also offers various business and legal services that can be purchased online a la carte via its easy-to-use platform. While other companies offer more competitively priced LLC formation packages, LegalZoom’s attorney services set it apart from the competition.

With over 20 years of industry experience, LegalZoom’s team of experts has helped customers start more than two million businesses. While admittedly on the more expensive side, LegalZoom’s refined legal expertise makes it a strong choice for entrepreneurs seeking assistance to form their own LLC.

ZenBusiness vs. LegalZoom: Plan Types and Cost

Both companies offer three LLC formation plans and several add-on services. They charge a base fee for their services and a separate state filing fee, which goes directly to the state where you form your LLC. All ZenBusiness and LegalZoom packages include verifying business name availability and completing and filing state LLC paperwork.

As of this writing, you can file your LLC paperwork by paying the state filing fee, and ZenBusiness completes your submission for free. Previously, ZenBusiness charged $49 (plus state fees) for the Starter package which is now $0 plus state fees. LegalZoom’s Basic plan will also file your LLC formation paperwork for free plus the state’s file fee. Both base plans offer standard processing times, but LegalZoom also provides a free Wix business website.

Business owners wanting to file LLC formation documents with their Secretary of State, get an EIN through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and create an LLC operating agreement will pay state fees plus $224 through ZenBusiness ($0 Starter plan, $125 operating agreement template, and $99 EIN fee) or $249 plus state fees through LegalZoom (LegalZoom’s Pro plan that includes EIN and operating agreement).

Higher plan tiers provide additional perks. LegalZoom Pro costs $249 and includes an EIN, operating agreement, as well as a consultation with a licensed insurance agent and a small business specialist. ZenBusiness charges $199 for its Pro package with a guided operating agreement, worry-free compliance services, and the fastest filing speeds of one to two business days. Similar compliance services from LegalZoom cost $280 annually.

LegalZoom’s Premium plan is $299 plus state fees, and adds the fastest filing speeds ZenBusiness already includes in its mid-tier plan, and ZenBusiness Premium is $349 plus state fees. ZenBusiness Premium also includes a business website, email, and domain. In addition, you can add legal services to your LegalZoom package or registered agents and financial software to your ZenBusiness plan.

ZenBusiness vs. LegalZoom: Registered Agents

Many states require LLCs and other business entities to list a permanent registered agent, also known as a statutory agent, resident agent, or agent for service of process. This person can be the business owner or a third party, like ZenBusiness or LegalZoom. Both business formation providers offer registered agent services in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. As a registered agent, the third party’s name and address go on public record, allowing them to receive official mail from the Secretary of State and other state agencies in person or via mail.

ZenBusiness charges $199 annually for a registered agent in the state where you filed your LLC or corporation paperwork. It receives most government communications on your behalf and then scans and uploads the documents to your online portal. If a matter needs your attention, ZenBusiness will send you a notice via postal mail. To view government communications, log into your dashboard and check the Documents section.

Like ZenBusiness, LegalZoom can be your registered agent on record, meaning their physical address is on file for legal and tax matters, including if you are sued and served papers. It costs $249 per year, which is more than ZenBusiness.

However, in addition to agent availability from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, LegalZoom offers a few other benefits. They send alerts when you get important mail and provide a compliance calendar with email notifications for annual reporting and tax deadlines. Unlike ZenBusiness, LegalZoom’s RA services include a $1 million identity theft protection policy and Experian credit monitoring for you and your business.

LegalZoom has registered agents for various business entities, including LLCs, corporations, nonprofits, limited partnerships, and limited liability partnerships, whereas ZenBusiness covers LLCs and corporations.

ZenBusiness vs. LegalZoom: Features

ZenBusiness and LegalZoom provide additional tools and services along with business formation assistance. ZenBusiness has fewer offerings than LegalZoom, focusing on business formation, compliance, and finance, whereas LegalZoom covers many business aspects, estate planning, and offers attorney advice.

Through ZenBusiness, small companies can receive a report listing all required business licenses and permits or complete and file an annual report based on your state’s requirements. Its worry-free compliance services include reminders for filing and compliance activities, yearly report submissions, and two business amendment filings. In addition, ZenBusiness Money helps self-employed individuals track mileage, income, and expenses. Users have a financial dashboard for invoicing clients and finding tax deductions.

While LegalZoom offers a Wix website with business formation packages, ZenBusiness has a website builder available as an add-on or as part of its Premium plan. It also provides an add-on for business documents and templates. This paid feature gives access to service and contract agreements. However, LegalZoom has similar templates available for free on its website. Moreover, LegalZoom provides more options for protecting intellectual property and scaling your business, such as trademark filing and legal assistance.

LegalZoom assists nonprofits wanting 501(c)(3) status and companies needing a list of required local, county, state, and federal licenses. Like ZenBusiness, LegalZoom clients can purchase services for filing annual reports or amendments or select LegalZoom's total compliance for bundled tools, including a compliance calendar and yearly report submissions. Additionally, LegalZoom helps with trademarks, patents, and copyrights.

LegalZoom has a business advisory plan for legal services. This package includes 30-minute attorney consults on new legal matters, document and contract reviews, and, for entrepreneurs with a 12-month package, LegalZoom provides an annual business evaluation. And business owners can establish wills, living trusts, or comprehensive estate plans through LegalZoom services.

ZenBusiness Business Formation Services

Startups and solopreneurs wanting to form an LLC or corporation

Companies needing ongoing compliance support or registered agents

Business owners looking for bundled tax, invoicing, and accounting tools

Entrepreneurs wanting legal advisory services

Nonprofit organizations needing formation assistance

Founded in 2015 and headquartered in Austin, Texas, ZenBusiness is a public benefit corporation (PBC) offering grants to small companies, business formation services, and accounting tools. It helps entrepreneurs plan and start their businesses, from reserving a business name to filing LLC or corporation paperwork.

Unlike LegalZoom, ZenBusiness provides formation assistance for free, meaning business owners only pay their state’s filing fee. Users can also complete other startup tasks through ZenBusiness, such as requesting an EIN or finding out what licenses they need.

For New York-based startups, ZenBusiness can handle the state’s requirement to publish LLC formation details in two newspapers within 120 days of registration. LegalZoom doesn’t offer this service. Similar to other providers in our rating, ZenBusiness has an operating agreement and compliance support.

These services come with Pro and Premium plans, or you can purchase them separately. ZenBusiness's registered agent service costs less than LegalZoom’s but more than other competitors like BetterLegal and Bizee .

Your business documents, entity information, and orders are accessible through an online dashboard, and users can add other services anytime. Once you’ve established your company, ZenBusiness helps you get a certificate of good standing and file amendments with your Secretary of State. For a one-time fee, ZenBusiness provides more than 25 templates for business waivers, contracts, and service agreements. These are available through your documents library in the ZenBusiness dashboard, convenient for frequently used forms.

ZenBusiness also lets you bundle financial and website tools with your formation subscription or purchase them separately. ZenBusiness Money Essentials is free for expense tagging and tracking, whereas ZenBusiness Money Pro includes invoicing tools, online payments, and tax prep features. Although LegalZoom offers a Wix website, it doesn’t have financial software.

LegalZoom Business Formation Services

Startups and established businesses looking to form a partnership, LLC, nonprofit, or corporation.

Entrepreneurs wanting ongoing legal or compliance services.

Business owners with intellectual property concerns.

Companies needing free LLC formation services.

Self-employed individuals wanting accounting software.

LegalZoom launched in 2001. It has offices in Austin, Texas, the Bay Area, and Los Angeles, California. LegalZoom provides professional and personal services, including business formation assistance, estate planning, and legal advice. Like ZenBusiness, LegalZoom users can reserve a business name and form an LLC, S-Corporation, or C-Corporation. However, it also supports LLPs, limited partnerships, and nonprofits, which many competitors don’t offer. Along with filing paperwork for these entities, LegalZoom assists organizations with gaining 501(c)(3) status for tax exemption.

LegalZoom customers can add services to streamline the startup process, including EIN registration, DBA (doing business as) filing, operating agreement creation, and a business license report. But it doesn’t provide New York publication assistance. LegalZoom’s compliance support covers annual filing and amendments. Unlike ZenBusiness, LegalZoom doesn’t bundle compliance services with formation subscriptions, but a free Wix website comes with all LLC formation plans.

Its registered agent program is more expensive than others in our rating of the Best LLC Services of 2024 . However, LegalZoom’s legal advisory services cost less than $40 per month. Attorneys will review business documents or contracts and answer new legal questions. LegalZoom also provides an extensive database of customizable templates in more than a dozen categories.

Companies with intellectual property can use LegalZoom to establish patents, copyrights, and trademarks. It also offers other business services, including certificates of good standing, corporate name change filing, and entity conversion. While it lacks the financial tools provided by ZenBusiness, LegalZoom has several estate planning services which can help business owners prepare for their future.

Which LLC Service Is Better?

ZenBusiness ties with BetterLegal for the No. 1 spot on our Best LLC Services of 2024 rating. It’s the best solution for cash-poor startups and established businesses wanting to form an LLC or corporation. ZenBusiness provides basic services for companies in any industry, and professional reviewers note that the pricing is easy to understand.

However, LegalZoom is the better option if you’re considering alternative entities, such as a nonprofit or LLP, or want ongoing legal advice. Its pricing structure and the sheer number of services are a bit more overwhelming than ZenBusiness, but LegalZoom provides legal, intellectual property protection, and nonprofit formation services.

Is It Worth It? (Pros, Cons & More)

LegalZoom Legal Services Review

  • Resource Reviews
  • The Best Resources for Business Compliance

Last Updated: June 30, 2023 By TRUiC Team

Looking for online legal services, but not sure where to start? Finding a service that fits the bill can be challenging, especially since there aren’t many options available.

With nearly 4 million customers served and counting, LegalZoom deserves a look. They’re a “household name” in the industry without a doubt.

In this LegalZoom legal services review, we’ll examine some of their pros and cons, pricing, features, customer reviews and more. In a few minutes, you’ll know if LegalZoom is the right way to go, or if you should look into other options. Enjoy!

Some Pros & Cons of LegalZoom

Pros of legalzoom.

  • LegalZoom offers a money-back guarantee at any time within 60 days of purchase. Most other online legal services offer trial periods, but few this long.
  • Few competitors can match their experience. They’ve helped 3.6 million customers since opening their doors in 2001.
  • They provide access to tax professionals and an annual business evaluation by a lawyer, two features most online legal services don’t offer.
  • With LegalZoom’s Business Legal plan, you get one copyright registration per month included in your subscription. From books to photographs, you’d be surprised how many creative works are covered.
  • Starting at $31.25/mo for business customers, their rates are lower than most competitors offering comprehensive online legal services.
  • Their customer service is easy to reach by phone, and US-based agents are available from 8am-10pm ET Monday through Friday, 10am-7pm ET on weekends.

Cons of LegalZoom

  • Their customer feedback is hit and miss. On SiteJabber they average a 3.1 rating out of 5. More than half of their reviews are perfect 5-star scores, but there’s plenty of criticism to be found as well.
  • As is often the case with large companies, their customer service is a bit inconsistent. Some people have great experiences with their reps, while others feel like they’re getting the run around.
  • Reviewing documents longer than 10 pages with an attorney can get expensive. Each one will result in an upcharge of at least $39, although documents that exceed 25 pages will cost you into the hundreds.

Based on everything we’ve run through, I’d give LegalZoom ’s legal services a 4.4 out of 5. I think it's worth considering if you need access to legal documents and attorney help - while on a budget.

LegalZoom Pricing & Features

LegalZoom opts for a streamlined and simple approach to packaging, so there’s only one package available for their legal services. That being said, there are discounts available depending on payment plans.

Business Advisory Plan = $36-$31.25/mo

With the LegalZoom Business Advisory Plan, you get a ton of features for your money. In addition to the items listed in the screenshot below, you receive one copyright registration per month, as well as subscriber rates for other services like incorporation and registered agent.

Legalzoom Plans

Plus, If you hire any attorney from LegalZoom’s network, you will receive a 25% discount off of their total legal fees. As we mentioned earlier, document reviews exceeding 10 pages can get costly in a hurry.

  • 11-15 page documents: $39
  • 16-25 page documents: $99
  • 26+ page documents: Price varies by attorney

You don’t need us to tell you LegalZoom can get expensive if you need lots of document reviews, so make sure to factor that into your decision.

Customer Reviews

LegalZoom is a household name, and has the reviews to show for it. The company itself has hundreds of reviews for their Incorporation services. But since they divide their reviews by service, I’ve included their Legal Services reviews so you can get an up close look at what customers are saying about the service itself.

Customer reviews as of 9-11-2017:
  • Consumer Affairs: 3.2/5, 40 votes
  • Sitejabber.com: 3.2/5, 607 reviews
  • TrustPilot: 4.1/10, 10 reviews
  • LegalZoom (Legal Service Specific): 4.5/5, 457

Aside from the LegalZoom reviews, there are reviews on other sites that raised some pretty legitimate concerns. The complaint that I saw most frequently was that the customer service was either really hard to get a hold of, or evasive when it came to answering direct questions.

Having said that, they do still have a pretty large volume of 5 star reviews, especially about their legal services. The market for this type of product is also pretty small online, so it’s clear that customers are pleased to have this service available.

How LegalZoom Compares

LegalZoom is a great choice to provide you with top online legal services because they offer comprehensive legal assistance, and their experience and longevity are tough to beat. Still, let’s briefly look at Rocket Lawyer for a well-rounded comparison of pricing, features and more.

Pricing: LegalZoom offers one package at $36/mo, while Rocket Lawyer’s packaging starts at $39.95 and offers an additional package for $49.95. I’ll get into which one is a better value in just a bit, but if we’re only talking about price, LegalZoom is a smidge cheaper.

Features: Now Rocket Lawyer and LegalZoom work a little bit different. Rocket Lawyer is a templating service and a legal resource in one, while this package from LegalZoom offers the legal resource alone. So, while the Rocket Lawyer packages are a little bit more per month, they offer a two in one service that LegalZoom doesn’t have available.

Customer Service: Looking at what customers are saying, LegalZoom has experienced issues handling customer service needs. They offer email and phone support for customers, along with the support you would receive from their on-call attorneys. Rocket Lawyer on the other hand offers email, phone and livechat support, and when we looked through Rocket Lawyer’s customer reviews noticed that most customers (for the most part) appreciated the service they offered.

Number of Businesses Served: Both of these companies have served millions of users and those numbers continue to grow. But if we’re looking at numbers alone, Rocket Lawyer wins out. LegalZoom has served over 4 million, while Rocket Lawyer serves over 20 million.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does legalzoom have a free trial.

No, not technically, but they have a 60-day money back guarantee. At any point within two months of purchase, simply request a refund and they’ll return any fees paid to LegalZoom. Some competitors only offer a one-week trial!

How Accessible Is Their Customer Service?

LegalZoom has longer phone support hours than anyone else in the industry. They’re available every weekday from 8am-10pm ET, and every weekend from 10am-7pm ET. That being said, they have had issues with providing adequate customer service to users in the past. This isn’t a universal experience by any means, but it’s something you should take into consideration before deciding.

Are There Any Extra Features Included?

LegalZoom includes access to tax professionals with their online legal services, as well as one copyright registration per month. Those are features you won’t find with many of their competitors.

Should You Use LegalZoom?

Based on everything we’ve run through, I’d give LegalZoom ’s legal services a 4.4 out of 5. I think it's worth considering if you need access to legal documents and attorney help - while on a budget. That being said, if this doesn’t sound like your perfect fit, check out our  Best Online Legal Services for Business . Cheers!

How LegalZoom Works

Now that you understand what LegalZoom is and how it can benefit you, you might be curious about how it actually works. The process is relatively straightforward, and we’ll explain it in simple terms to give you a general idea.

Getting started with LegalZoom involves creating an account as the first step. From there, you’ll need to select the type of document you require and answer a series of questions to customize it. With forming an LLC, you would choose the “Form an LLC” option.

Once you have completed the form, LegalZoom will generate the document and provide you with a copy for review and signing. If you prefer an attorney to review your documents before signing, LegalZoom offers this service for an additional fee.

Once the document is signed, LegalZoom stores it securely in an online repository for easy access. They also review your filing documents for accuracy and ensure they’re sent to the state level authority for official registration of your LLC.

>> Use LegalZoom for Your Business

The app allows you to schedule appointments with experts, access and obtain digital documents related to business formation, track the status of your paperwork, and address any issues that arise. As per the LegalZoom review, the app offers unlimited cloud storage for securely sharing, saving, and viewing your documents.

  • Satisfaction Guaranteed: LegalZoom has a refund policy that offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee within the first 60 days of purchase. If you’re unhappy with their service, you can request a refund, and it will be processed within five business days.
  • One-Stop Shop: LegalZoom not only provides help for business formation but offers legal help for various aspects of your personal life, including wills, power of attorney, estate planning, trademarks, copyrights, and patents.

LegalZoom also offers add-ons such as filing for an Employer Identification Number (EIN), filing for a DBA (Doing Business As), and obtaining an operating agreement and annual reports.
  • Free Version: LegalZoom is one of the few platforms that provides a free version to its customers. This option includes articles of organization, a name check service, a digital welcome packet, and a customizable website. LegalZoom’s free version includes a customizable website, which can be valuable for those starting an LLC and seeking the help of a professional service.
  • Customizable Website: LegalZoom has partnered with Wix to offer a fully functional website that you can customize according to your needs. This feature allows both existing businesses and new businesses in the formation stage to establish an online presence with a ready-made site created by Wix. This addition aims to empower entrepreneurs and support their growth.

If you require a website for your new business, this feature can be helpful. However, if you already have a website in progress, it may not be necessary.

If you’re ready to form a LegalZoom LLC or seek professional advice, LegalZoom offers three plans to choose from: Basic, Pro, and Premium.

LegalZoom provides a Business Advisory Plan as an add-on. Let’s delve into each plan to determine which one best suits your needs.

The Basic Plan

This plan is suitable if you prefer to handle most of the work yourself and only need the essential features. It includes the articles of organization, which are necessary for officially registering your LLC with the state.

The plan also includes a name check service to verify the availability of your business name, as well as a digital welcome packet that guides you through the steps to follow if your LLC is registered.

It provides a customizable website powered by Wix. Keep in mind that while this plan is free , you’ll still need to pay the state filing fees. Note that the Basic plan doesn’t include access to an attorney.

The Pro Plan

The Pro plan offers everything included in the Basic plan and more. It provides an operating agreement, which is a legal document outlining the rules and guidelines for your LLC.

As per the LegalZoom review, it includes an Employer Identification Number (EIN), a tax ID number assigned to businesses for tax filing and reporting purposes.

The Pro plan also covers a comprehensive guide to business licenses specific to your location and industry. It offers consultations with an insurance agent and a small business tax specialist. The Pro plan starts at $249 plus state filing fees.

The Premium Plan

The Premium plan includes everything in the Basic and Pro plans, along with additional features. This plan starts at $299 plus state filing fees and offers one-day expedited processing time from LegalZoom and prioritization within the Secretary of State’s queue (where applicable).

>> Visit LegalZoom for Pricing

LegalZoom provides access to its network of attorneys who offer legal advice on various matters, including business formations, estate planning, intellectual property, and family law, among others.

This service option can save you significant amounts of money in attorney fees. LegalZoom also offers a comprehensive online library of legal information.

LegalZoom registered agent review service can be expensive at $299 per year. However, if you’re the face of your business and live in the same state as your LLC, you or someone you know can act as the registered agent at no cost.

A registered agent receives legal documents, letters, and important tax documents on behalf of the LLC. Unless you have multiple LLCs in different states or a need for anonymity, you can be your own LegalZoom registered agent review and avoid this cost. The downside is that your information will be publicly available.

Why Trust Our LegalZoom Review?

Our team of legal experts went through all the LegalZoom steps to create an LLC. We asked questions using the support vehicles offered (chat, email and phone) just as any customer would when using the product. After spending over 250 hours exploring LegalZoom and other LLC formation services, we gave a rating to LegalZoom’s LLC formation service based on its features, value for money, customer service and usability based on our own experience with the product, not based on what the company says it does or offers.

LegalZoom Overview

LegalZoom — whose name sometimes appears on websites as Legal Zoom — is one of the leading online legal service providers, offering both DIY and attorney-assisted legal help to millions of customers since they were founded in 2001 in Glendale, California. LegalZoom is not a law firm, but the company does partner with thousands of legal consultants from around the country to help customers with personal and business-related endeavors. The platform is primarily used by customers needing new business formation or estate planning services, but also assists in a variety of other areas, including intellectual property, marriage and divorce, and real estate.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has given LegalZoom an A rating, and more than 6,000 customers have rated the service with 4.57 out of 5 stars . The LegalZoom reviews on Trustpilot show that it has earned “Excellent” status, and over 3,000 customers have rated the service an average of 4.6 out of 5-stars . ConsumerAffairs gives LegalZoom 4.5 out of 5 stars based on more than 2,000 ratings.

Tiers to Choose From

Our Guides Legal Services Team assessed the three pricing tiers for LegalZoom LLC formation: Basic, Pro and Premium. The tiers range from basic services with standard processing times to a more complete business formation package with expedited filing. As we mentioned above, LegalZoom is currently experimenting with their packages and prices so these options may vary for some users .

Here’s a quick look at what each tier currently has to offer:

Basic Package (20 business-day processing time): Currently priced at $0, this tier comes with:

  • Name check and business filing

  • Customizable website powered by Wix

Pro Package (10 business-day processing time): Currently priced at $249, this tier comes with all the Basic Package benefits, plus:

  • Comprehensive guide to business licenses for your location and industry
  • Consultation with a licensed insurance agent

Processing time

One of the main differentiations between each package is the processing time. You should know that this estimated processing time is how long LegalZoom will take to internally process your filing. This does not include the time it will take for the state to process your documents.

The Basic Package comes with a 20 business-day processing time, the Pro Package has a 10 business-day processing time and the Premium Package has the quickest turnaround time which is about 2-5 business-day processing time.

LegalZoom Customer Support

The LegalZoom customer support center is U.S.-based and sales agents are available during extended business hours. You can reach a representative by phone Monday through Friday, from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. PT, or on weekends from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. PT. You can also submit a question on the company website.

Satisfaction Guarantee

Here’s a highlight of this LegalZoom LLC review: If you are not satisfied with LegalZoom’s services within the first 60 days, the company will  issue you a refund . It’s important to note that LegalZoom can’t refund any money that went to government entities or third parties. For example, if you use LegalZoom to file an LLC, you won’t be refunded for the state filing fees.

LegalZoom Value

Compared to other competitors in the legal space, we found LegalZoom’s LLC formation cost to be more expensive, which is not very surprising considering their reputation and the attorney review process they guarantee.

Depending on your needs, you may pay a flat fee, monthly membership or annual membership price. Below is a price summary of some of the company’s popular packages and services that we looked at for this LegalZoom review:

*Prices may vary based on state. Restrictions may apply. All pricing in this LegalZoom review is accurate as of October 2023.

However, many of the features it offers will be included if you invest in other services offered by LegalZoom (like their registered agent service that comes with notifications when annual documents are due).

Whether your state requires an operating agreement when forming your LLC or you’re making the responsible choice and having one in place of your own volition, LegalZoom has an operating agreement feature that you can add on while moving through their formation prompts.

Starting at $99, you’ll get an operating agreement that’s generated after you answer a few questions and you’ll get their Peace of Mind Review™ which makes sure your agreement is legally sound. For an additional $100 LegalZoom will prioritize their review of your document and send it out using express shipping.

Business Banking and Insurance Partners

You can create a business banking account with one of their partners and get special offers. They also have partners offering business insurance for your small business needs.

Tax Advisory Service

Since forming a business will usually make your tax process a bit more complex, LegalZoom offers an add-on tax service. The most inexpensive option is their “Tax Advisory” option that offers unlimited advice on taxes and their other options are about $1000 per year.

How LegalZoom’s LLC Formation Service Compares

After delving into LegalZoom’s LLC formation service’s benefits and pricing, you might be wondering how their service compares to their competitors.

LegalZoom vs. ZenBusiness

Read our full in-depth review of  ZenBusiness vs. LegalZoom .

ZenBusiness is an online platform dedicated entirely to business formation. Each formation service has its differences, making them each great choices for two different types of consumers. For entrepreneurs simply looking to officially form a small business ZenBusiness is the better choice. However, for those who want an all-inclusive formation experience and want to take advantage of a broad scope of legal expertise, LegalZoom is a better fit for you.

Inside Scoop: If you’re looking to start an LLC at a minimal cost, ZenBusiness and LegalZoom both have a basic package that starts at $0.

LegalZoom vs. IncFile

Read our full in-depth review of LegalZoon vs Incfile .

Incfile’s lowest package at $0 + state filing fee includes registered agent services for free during your first year with the company. However, one big way that LegalZoom wins is through their ability to provide attorney help when you need it.

Overall, Incfile’s prices are lower than LegalZoom’s and their product is ideal for users who don’t anticipate needing legal help in the future. However, LegalZoom has a higher quality product backed by reviewing attorneys and a glowing reputation.

LegalZoom vs. Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer is another online legal site that advertises legal services. While Rocket Lawyer offers similar services to LegalZoom, its website plays up the company’s ability to help users with documents more than anything else.

Where LegalZoom Wins:

  • More affordable monthly membership for personal legal issues.  Rocket Lawyer offers a free week trial, but after that, it’s $39.99 per month for its premium membership (which serves both individuals and businesses) compared to LegalZoom’s price tag of $16.59 per month for personal legal support.
  • Customer support availability.  LegalZoom’s phone representatives are available seven days a week for nine to 14 hours per day. Rocket Lawyer offers phone support only 12 hours per day, Monday through Friday, which might be inconvenient for some entrepreneurs.
  • Reputation.  LegalZoom has been around longer and has a more recognizable name in the online legal space.

Where Rocket Lawyer Wins:

  • Free week trial.  Rocket Lawyer allows you to get familiar with its service and start making documents or even incorporate your LLC for free (you’ll just need to pay the state filing fees). So, if you decide to cancel your membership before the week trial is up, you could have already filed your business and acquired some legal documents through Rocket Lawyer without having to pay them a cent.
  • Quick answers feature.  Both LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer offer unlimited attorney touchpoints for new legal issues as part of their monthly membership package, but Rocket Lawyer also offers a “quick answer” feature on its website. If you have a simple legal question, you can post it on the site and an attorney will respond either online or by phone.
  • Monthly membership is more inclusive.  You pay more to get more. For example, let’s say you need to do some estate planning. Rocket Lawyer’s monthly membership includes access to many legal documents. LegalZoom charges a la cart for estate planning documents, which may be preferable to customers who only need to create one document.

Bottom line:  Our LegalZoom review determined that if you need extensive access to legal documents, you’re likely better off paying a bit more for Rocket Lawyer’s services. However, if you have straightforward questions for a lawyer, need a review of a simple legal document or don’t require lots of legal forms or contracts, LegalZoom is probably the better pick.

LegalZoom vs. LegalShield

LegalShield is an online legal technology platform that’s similar to LegalZoom at first glance, but has different offerings and prices. The biggest difference we’ve found is that LegalZoom advertises more of its individual legal services and has a lot of DIY options, while LegalShield is mainly focused on its membership plans and on building a relationship between the client and lawyer.

  • More affordable for personal legal advice.  LegalZoom reviews show a cheaper monthly legal plan starting at $16.59 per month, compared to LegalShield’s service that starts at $29.95 per month. However, LegalZoom’s plan is restricted to new legal matters.
  • More affordable for business. LegalZoom has a cheaper business formation plan that starts at $0 for the year, plus the state filing fee, compared to LegalShield´s, which starts at $149, plus the state filing fee. (It’s worth noting LegalShield’s LLC formation plan does include more value, including an EIN.)
  • Individual legal services.  The main distinction we found is that you can purchase individual legal services through LegalZoom, while LegalShield includes their services and ongoing legal help through monthly plan options.

Where LegalShield Wins:

  • More touch points.  LegalShield’s monthly personal legal plan offers unlimited access to a lawyer including for pre-existing matters. Additionally, LegalShield members have 24/7 access to legal help for certain  emergency situations . LegalZoom’s unlimited 30-minute consultations are limited to new legal issues only.
  • More inclusive.  LegalShield’s monthly personal legal plan includes more services, such as standard will preparation, living will preparation, and legal help for IRS audits.

Bottom line:  If you want to form an LLC or if you have simple personal or business legal needs that don’t require a lot of attorney assistance, LegalZoom has more affordable options than LegalShield. However, if you’re looking for something more hands-on and want an ongoing relationship with a lawyer, you may find it’s beneficial to spend a little more money to go with LegalShield.

Other Legal Services LegalZoom Offers

While LegalZoom is a great choice for starting and maintaining your LLC, it’s also a great choice for your other legal needs. LegalZoom has offerings for specific legal needs and if you just want broad legal help, they also have a membership for general legal assistance.

Legal Assist Plan

For a monthly fee, this prepaid membership plan offers unlimited 30-minute consultations with an attorney for any new legal matters. You have the option of choosing a 12- or six-month membership – both give you the same amount of access to LegalZoom’s network of attorneys with no hourly or hidden fees. Your membership also includes a review of legal documents up to 10 pages and, with the 12-month option, an annual legal checkup.

Personal and Family

For personal and family matters, LegalZoom’s offerings include the following:

  • Starting a nonprofit business
  • Starting a sole proprietorship

LegalZoom LLC Review — About the Company

Stemming from the idea to make legal help widely available, LegalZoom was launched in 2001. The company introduced a new way to help entrepreneurs with company formation, estate planning, and intellectual property protection.

LegalZoom is one of the most popular business formation service providers, offering all-around assistance. The experienced team can provide you with a smooth transition through the complicated bureaucracy and help you form your business, including legal protection. As a one-stop solution, the company covers the legal ground better than most competitors.

LegalZoom LLC pricing is on the higher end compared to other similar firms, so let’s find out whether you’d ultimately get what you’re paying for.

Below is the rundown of LegalZoom’s services and features. We’re also detailing the company’s plans and where it stands among the competition.

Business Formation

LegalZoom offers business formation services for LLC , LP, LLP, C-corporation, S-corporation, sole proprietorship, and nonprofits. In addition, the company provides a free name search tool, so you can check whether your desired business name is available directly on their website. This is one of the highly appreciated features in LegalZoom LLC reviews.

The next step is to provide the company with the necessary information. Then, the team prepares and submits the Articles of Organization. This service is available only as part of the LegalZoom plans and can’t be purchased separately. The Basic plan comes at $79 plus state fees, which is higher than the industry standards.

Registered Agent Service

LegalZoom registered agent service is costly compared to most of its competitors. However, during our research for the LegalZoom registered agent review, we learned that the service offers excellent value.

The registered agent service will enable you to get your legal notices and business mail on time. You’ll also have unlimited cloud storage for your documents. Plus, you’ll be alerted whenever important mail is received.

Additionally, you’ll receive emails about events like annual reports or tax deadlines through the LegalZoom Compliance Calendar. On top of it, you’ll have $1 million in identity theft protection and credit monitoring through Experian for both you and your business. The LegalZoom registered agent cost is $299 per year.

Annual Reports

To meet your legal obligations, you’re required to file a report within a specific time frame depending on the state and your business time. Filing the reports on schedule is necessary if you want to avoid penalties and stay compliant with the state. For $55 plus state fees, the LegalZoom team will create the report and file it. If you pay $75, the team will also prioritize your order.

Operating Agreement

LegalZoom will create a personalized Operating Agreement outlining the rules and roles of your organization. First, you need to answer a few questions, after which the team will check for issues and then file the document. The LegalZoom LLC Operating Agreement costs $99, and there’s an expedited service for $199.

Foreign Qualification

If you’re expanding your business outside your state, you need a Foreign Qualification for the states in which you’re planning to operate. LegalZoom can prepare and file it with the Secretary of State for you. The standard version of the service comes at $229 plus state fees, whereas the rush package costs $339 plus state fees. Compared to LegalZoom competitors, both Foreign Qualification packages are on the higher end.

Corporate Amendments

LegalZoom offers to create an amendment document and file it with the state whenever you need to update your name, address, and other information. At $139 plus state fees, the standard version will ensure you meet the state requirements, keep the audience updated, and keep the authorized stock up to date. In addition, there’s a rush option at $239 (excluding state fees) with expedited paperwork processing and delivery within 3 business days.

Minutes Manager

The Minutes Manager service costs $99 a year. According to LegalZoom customer reviews, it can be quite beneficial, as it provides:

  • Unlimited minutes usage for meetings
  • Notices/waivers of notice for future meetings
  • Actions by written consent

If you are closing your business, you’ll need articles of dissolution to let the state know that you’re stopping your business. LegalZoom can handle the process for $129 (standard option) or $239 (rush service) plus state fees. The team will ensure you’re meeting the state requirements, and once the process is completed, you’ll receive the documents in the mail.

Compliance Calendar

The customized compliance calendar that contains deadlines and other information is a service that isn’t obligatory but still highly appreciated in LegalZoom LLC reviews. You can look back up to six months or forward up to 12 months of your company’s activities. Plus, you’ll receive alerts to remind you of the most important compliance events. The annual fee of this service is $69, which is an affordable price.

DBA Service

For $99 plus state fees, the company can also provide the DBA service while applying for a newspaper publication if the state requires so. Additionally, the team will submit the proof of publication to the appropriate agency.

Additional Filing Services

During the research for our LegalZoom review, we discovered that the company offers some less common types of filings too:

  • Federal Tax ID (EIN)
  • State tax ID
  • Certificates of good standing
  • Certified copies
  • Business licenses
  • Seller’s permit
  • 501c3 application
  • Corporate supplies

Trademark Registration

LegalZoom offers a well-rounded suite of services to protect your intellectual property and stands on par with specialized trademark companies. There’s a step-by-step guide to walk you through the process, after which the team will complete and file your application.

The trademark registration service isn’t included in any of LegalZoom’s LLC packages. Instead, you’ll need to purchase it separately for $249 plus state fees.

Additionally, there’s an option to get attorney help for $599 plus federal fees. According to LegalZoom LLC reviews, the benefit of this package is that you get a LegalZoom guarantee. If the first mark gets rejected, this guarantee will ensure the company covers the fee to register a different one. The attorney will research the mark, file it, and deal with any potential roadblocks.

Trademark Patent

After the research done for this LegalZoom review, we can say this company offers patent and copyright services at affordable prices. The team will help you create and submit intellectual property-related applications, including:

  • Patent search
  • Design patent
  • Utility patent
  • Provisional application for patent
  • Copyright registration

Some of the services include consultation with a USPTO-registered patent agent or attorney, which is a huge plus.

Last Will and Testament

Using the company’s online maker service, you can easily create a personalized last will that is compliant with the state-specific requirements. According to reviews of LegalZoom for LLC, the process is straightforward and cost-effective.

With the Comprehensive Last Will plan, you’ll also get two-week access to attorneys for legal guidance. On the other hand, the bundled Last Will Estate plan provides one year of attorney assistance for all your questions related to estate planning and legal advice. It also includes the Financial Power of Attorney, a Living Will, and unlimited revisions. LegalZoom LLC pricing information shows that customers can get this bundle for $179.

Living Trust

LegalZoom enables you to personalize your living will with its step-by-step guide. At $279, the plan allows unlimited revisions for up to 30 days. The more advanced package is priced at $299 and ups the basic plan with two weeks of legal assistance and an attorney review of your trust.

The legal assistance service renews monthly at $14.99 but can be canceled at any time. The clients praise the value of the bundle containing Living Trust, Financial Power of Attorney, and Living Will services, as LegalZoom LLC reviews suggest.

Power of Attorney

With LegalZoom, you can create a personalized power of attorney to protect your finances. This service allows you to designate someone who will handle your financial affairs in case you can’t.

The price of the service is reasonable and offers three options. With the first one, you can do it yourself with the company’s online maker for $35. The second option is to add subscription-based assistance for $45. The third option is to bundle with a few essentials like Financial Power of Attorney, a Living Will, and a choice of Last Will or Living Trust.

LegalZoom Customer Service

LegalZoom provides phone and email support. Depending on the package you purchase, you’ll have access to a different support team. For example, the basic plan gives you access to the general customer service team. If you purchase the Fast Track package, you’ll have access to the executive team and an option to get called at a pre-scheduled time. The Attorney Guided plan also grants access to the executive team with an extra perk of scheduling unlimited consultations with lawyers.

However, LegalZoom LLC reviews online are mixed. The waiting time is long, and the response via email is often too generic. The phone support is a bit better. The reps are available Monday through Friday from 10 am to 8 pm EST. They are knowledgeable and give more detailed answers.

However, the support can be very inconsistent. Some representatives are excellent and do everything to elevate the client’s experience, while others barely provide answers.

LegalZoom Ratings

Launched in 2001, LegalZoom has helped 4 million customers form and manage their businesses as well as receive much-needed legal assistance. Looking closely at our review of business directories, we were surprised to learn that the company doesn’t have a lot of feedback as opposed to its competitors. Moreover, the reviews are mixed, and the ratings lag behind the alternatives.

There are only 1,000 LegalZoom customer reviews on SiteJabber, with an average rating of 3.6 stars. Only about 650 have left five or four stars, whereas 360 have rated their experience with one or two stars. The lack of solid customer experience is cited in the majority of negative reviews.

The company has almost 1400 reviews on Trustpilot, though. The average rating is 4.4 stars, and about 77% of clients have given five or four stars. Another 21% described their experience as bad or poor.

Ease of Ordering

From what we’ve seen, the ordering process on LegalZoom differs from that of its competitors. Upon starting the ordering process, you’ll be asked to provide your personal information first before viewing the available LegalZoom LLC packages.

On the upside, the company offers the possibility of sharing a screen while placing the order. LegalZoom automatically generates an ID that you can send to a customer service representative and get customized assistance throughout the ordering process. Each client also gains access to the LegalZoom dashboard, which is intuitive and helps you stay organized.

There are quite a few upsells, as seen in numerous LegalZoom incorporation reviews. Each service is presented with a detailed explanation. Clients would also love it if they could see each plans’ base price first and then consider if they want to include any add-ons.

LegalZoom Turnaround Time

LegalZoom doesn’t promise filing on the next business day or specify its processing time, and there isn’t an option to pay an additional fee for a faster filing time.

The company provides an estimated turnaround time for each package, though. If you opt for the least expensive one, it might take up to 30 business days to get the job done, while the estimated turnaround time is 10–15 business days with the most expensive package.

LegalZoom LLC Cost of Add-Ons

As we already mentioned, LegalZoom offers numerous add-ons. The company’s pricing is high, even though some of them are very helpful. If you opt for some of these services, the price shown will rapidly increase before you even have the opportunity to choose your basic package.

For example, Legal assistance subscription packages start at $39.99 a month, including employment agreements and other HR documents.

The LegalZoom registered agent fee is $299 a year. The service offers more than just the basics; for example, the system will also notify you about important mails and critical deadlines through the Compliance Calendar. It also includes $1 million in identity theft protection and credit monitoring through Experian and unlimited cloud storage.

The next add-on option is the LegalZoom full-service compliance package which costs $280 a year. It includes the annual report service, helps with keeping the personal and business assets separate, and assists business owners with corporate recordkeeping.

Essential documents are differently priced. For example, the Operating Agreement costs $99, EIN and Federal Tax ID come at $159, whereas a bundle of an Operating Agreement, assistance acquiring permits and licenses, and EIN costs $199.

LegalZoom Incorporation Fees

All LegalZoom plans contain a Peace of Mind review, which includes checking the paperwork for completeness and consistency. In addition, the LLC welcome digital package comes with Articles of Organization and authorization letters for opening a bank account. Other services included in the plans are a 30-minute consultation with a tax professional, a 30-day free trial for an online bookkeeping tool, and a helpful guide on the following steps to take after the business is formed.

The cheapest LegalZoom plan comes at $79 plus state fees. Besides the basics, the package includes name availability search and the filing service. However, it lacks a few essentials like the Operating Agreement and registered agent, which most LegalZoom alternatives offer.

The standard plan comes at $329 plus state filing fees. It ups Economy with a deluxe organizer embossed with your business name, LegalZoom VIP processing, and official certificates and seal.

Express Gold is the package you should go with if you need expedited document delivery. It costs $349 (excluding state fees), and it provides rush processing (7–10 business days) and two-day delivery of the finalized documents.

Business Advisory Plan

Our LegalZoom review showed that the Business Advisory plan is an excellent option for creating personalized legal forms. It’s a prepaid plan you can subscribe to for six months or one year. You’ll pay a flat fee of $31.25 per month when paid annually or $36 a month billed twice a year. The annual business evaluation is included in the one-year subscription only. Both plans include:

  • A 30-minute consultation with an attorney
  • Reviews of contracts and other legal documents of up to ten pages
  • Annual business evaluation
  • Unlimited form downloads from the library
  • Discounts on certain services

LegalZoom Discounts

Many third-party websites offer a LegalZoom LLC promo code; however, we can’t guarantee that this would work, as the company doesn’t offer promo codes or coupons through its official site.

On the other hand, the firm offers an option to save by purchasing bundles. You can also get discounts on specific services with the prepaid plans. For example, the Business Advisory Plan includes a 25% discount on additional consultations with an attorney and legal representation.

LegalZoom Refund

LegalZoom is one of the few business formation services that offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee. You can request a refund within 60 days of the purchase, and the company will grant you one without any cancellation fees. Keep in mind that the company’s refund policy excludes the fees paid to the state and third-party vendors.

LegalZoom vs. Other LLC Services

Before settling on one legal service, you should weigh how LegalZoom compares to its alternatives. Although Rocket Lawyer is the company’s closest competitor, there are others who offer similar services. We made a head-to-head comparison of LegalZoom and other companies so you can make a more informed decision.

LegalZoom vs. Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer is a budget-friendly business formation option that helps you save on essential services like a registered agent, trademark, legal, and business license. However, if you need ongoing attorney help, LegalZoom might be a better option. Moreover, it offers incredible customer support — an area in which Rocket Lawyer lags.

LegalZoom’s intuitive, template-based services set the company apart from Rocket Lawyer. With a library of 1,600+ templates, you can easily DIY. The company’s team also double-checks legal documents before submission to prevent mistakes. Another one of LegalZoom’s top-selling points is having lawyers do annual business evaluations and confer with tax consultants.

Read our detailed Rocket Lawyer vs LegalZoom comparison.

LegalZoom vs. Incfile

Both Incfile and LegalZoom are reputable business formation service providers. Both get the job done and offer a wide range of useful features, so choosing between the two depends on your business needs.

Incfile has more positive feedback online and cheaper plans. Its Basic plan comes at $0 (excluding state fees) and covers all essential services for business formation. Plus, it provides one year of free registered agent service. On the other hand, LegalZoom is a premium-level LLC service provider that offers an all-encompassing experience, including ongoing legal assistance.

LegalZoom vs. Northwest

Both LegalZoom and Northwest Registered Agents have been around for a while, so they have a significant level of experience in business formation. The companies’ packages are very similar, but Northwest offers a year of free registered agent service, renewing at an affordable price of $125 a year.

Northwest also stands apart with its outstanding customer support. The company is also the only one in the industry that locally scans each document received on your behalf, not just the government documents.

LegalZoom is the way to go if you want a more powerful brand name that offers legal assistance.

LegalZoom vs. ZenBusiness

The most significant difference between LegalZoom and ZenBusiness is the price. ZenBusiness is an affordable company that offers a one-year free registered agent service. It’s one of the best firms in the industry in terms of value for money.

LegalZoom is a premium service provider with plans that contain the basics and multiple add-ons. The company has been around since 2001, which is way longer than ZenBusiness. It boasts a powerful brand name that has served over four million customers.

LegalZoom vs. Swyft Filings

Neither of these companies offer registered agent service in their plans. Comparing both service providers, we can say that Swyft Filings is more affordable and a top choice for small businesses. At the same time, LegalZoom specializes in corporate law issues and has more brand power than Swyft Filings, but the latter has better customer support.

Is LegalZoom Worth It?

LegalZoom’s pricing isn’t competitive, and the plans are pretty limited without the add-ons. Nevertheless, the company has strong brand power and it can be an excellent choice if you want to work with an established team and are willing to pay an extra buck for premium services.

Weighing in all LegalZoom pros and cons, the firm is a great option if you need ongoing legal assistance. On top of that, it offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee, which is a nice touch. The company is a great option for small businesses without an in-house legal department as it provides a range of services that can address multiple issues at a fraction of the cost.

LegalZoom Frequently Asked Questions

LegalZoom helps you create legal documents for business formation, trademark applications, copyright registration, wills, living trusts, and more. The company uses advanced technology to provide services at lower prices than those charged by lawyers. You can use a range of DIY templates to create the documents and then have the team file them. Alternatively, you can use the help of the company’s attorneys, who are experienced in various legal issues related to business or personal law.

Although it might seem expensive, LegalZoom is an excellent choice for small businesses that lack a legal department. The costs of hiring a lawyer independently can climb to a few hundred dollars per hour. LegalZoom allows you to address a range of legal issues at a fixed price that won’t break the bank. From business formation and filing the annual report to taxes and intellectual property protection, LegalZoom does it at a fraction of the cost compared to hiring lawyers on retainer.

LegalZoom doesn’t offer promo codes, coupons, or sales. Even though numerous third-party sites offer discounts, they aren’t official. The company does offer some ways to save money, though. You can bundle several services and get a more attractive price. Moreover, if you purchase the Business Advisory and Legal Advantage Plus plans, you can get a 25% off attorney consultations and a 10% discount on specific legal documents.

LegalZoom stands out from its competitors thanks to its strong brand reputation. It’s an established service with a customer satisfaction guarantee. Moreover, it covers a wide range of corporate law issues and an all-inclusive business formation plan. On the other hand, LegalZoom is pricier than most of its alternatives, and some companies are known to offer a faster turnaround and better customer support.

LegalZoom is one of the most trusted legal services that has built a strong brand power in the industry. It’s one of the oldest platforms online that offer legal help. Even though its offers aren’t the most affordable and are pretty limited without the add-ons, LegalZoom is a good choice for LLC formation if you don’t mind paying extra for premium services.

LegalZoom doesn’t have the fastest turnaround time in the industry. However, the company does provide estimates for each package. The estimated turnaround with the cheapest package is 30 days. On the other hand, the turnaround time with the higher-tier packages is approximately 10–15 business days.  Most of its competitors offer either a faster turnaround time or an expedited filing service at a fixed price. Our LegalZoom review shows that there isn’t an option to pay for rushed filing; however, most plans include expedited packages.

"We've used [LegalZoom] for quite a few things over the years, and overall it's gone very smoothly. They've been easy to work with and very affordable." Karen Yoo, LLC customer

"Without LegalZoom, I probably would have not felt comfortable, from a time and money and effort standpoint, establishing as many brands as I did. And that would have been a bummer because those are the brands that are really keeping the lights on, and helping our business grow." Derek Rohlffs, trademark customer

"I needed to update my will. I'd heard of LegalZoom. And when I had to update some documents, I looked online at some other companies, but felt comfortable using LegalZoom. The website was very helpful. And having access to a lawyer to make sure that everything was correct made it really doable." Nell C., last will customer

100% Satisfaction Guarantee

Our refund policy:.

We do right by you—so we'll refund our fee within the first 60 days of purchase if you're unhappy with our services. Call or email us, and we'll process your refund within 5 business days.

What it doesn't cover:

We can't refund third-party processing fees (e.g. paid directly to our service partners or to facilitate fulfilling your order like courier fees) once you make a purchase. And, we can't refund filing fees once we submit your paperwork to the government. Attorney fees paid directly to lawyers (and not through our legal plans) are not covered.

When it applies:

We can't guarantee specific legal outcomes when you use our products or services. For example, a trademark application might be filled out correctly but still get rejected by the government for reasons beyond our control. We can only refund our fee for issues we're directly responsible for. So if you purchase something and later change your mind, we can't issue a refund. For Registered Agent Services customers, you will first need to appoint a new registered agent for your business. If you need help locating the correct government form to change your registered agent with the state, please reach out to our Customer Care team. Updated: August 2, 2021

Qué no cubre:
