Introduction

Pakistan Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (PCSIR) was first established in 1953 at Karachi as an autonomous body registered under the Societies Act of 1860. The objective of the establishment of the Council was to initiate and promote scientific and industrial research towards the utilization of indigenous raw materials and development of industries based on them. In the year 1973, PCSIR was re-constituted vide an act of National Assembly. This marked the transition of PCSIR from its existing constitution towards reorganization, with greater emphasis on solution of industrial research oriented problems.

At the time of establishment, in 1953, Central Laboratories Karachi had seven Divisions. The nucleus premises of Central Laboratories Karachi was built with a covered area of approximately 6000 sq meters, having a scientific manpower of approximate 100 including senior scientists with foreign qualifications.

At present PCSIR labs complex, Karachi is comprised of 7 Centers with a total manpower of around six hundred including 190 scientist and technologists.

PCSIR Laboratories Complex Karachi is a multifunctional R&D organization comprising the following Research Centers:

• Applied Chemistry Research Center
• Applied Physics, Computer & Instrumentation Center
• Center For Environmental Studies
• Center For The Development Of Laboratory Equipment
• Engineering Services Center
• Food & Marine Resources Research Center
• Pharmaceutical Research Center

SCOPE OF PCSIR SERVICES:

For meeting the ever important requirement of ISO & WTO, the accredited Labs of PCSIR are maintaining the Quality Management System (QMS) and status of accreditation under ISO 17025 International Standard. It is further encouraging that the Food Microbiology, Chemicals, Textile Leather Labs, of PCSIR at Karachi have been assessed and accredited by internationally recognized accreditation body, the Norwegian Accreditation (NA). This award of international recognition of technical competence shall certainly play a pivotal role improving the confidence of PCSIR workers to help the industrial sector in boosting up the trade and economy of Pakistan. Due to national (PNAC) and international (NA) accreditation of KLC, major commodities in food sector are being tested and certified by these laboratories before their export abroad.

PCSIR is also making efforts to develop / improve links / liaison with similar institutes, of other countries of the world, in order to undertake collaborative research projects in different fields of S&T.Output of R&D work, leading towards innovations and process development, indicates the originality creativeness.PCSIR works under the administrative control of Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST). Keeping in view the growing requirement of industrial sector and the international obligations in trade and commerce, the Council was restructured and made an autonomous body through PCSIR Act of 1973. Due to changing scenario of S&T developments at global level, PCSIR has reoriented its priorities and strategies and diverted emphasis towards the new emerging technologies.

PCSIR To Support Researchers For Instrument Access, Sample Analysis

ISLAMABAD, Mar 1 (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 1st Mar, 2022 ) : Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) has announced a project to provide financial support to MSc/MS/M.Phil/Ph.D students or researchers for instrumental access and sample analysis under a development programme "Data Repository of Scientific Instrumentation".

"Keeping in view the high cost of research data acquisition i.e acquiring and maintaining modern scientific equipment, the government has approved a project to enable the scientific community to have access to sophisticated equipment by providing financial support for free sample analysis to the students of M.Sc/MS/M.Phil/Ph.D. researchers enrolled with public sector research institutions, universities, research and development organizations and strategic research centers of Pakistan ", an official of PCSIR said.

Under the program, the eligible candidates/ students can avail analytical facilities from any public or private sector laboratories in the research areas including Chemical sciences, Biological sciences, physical sciences, Agricultural sciences and Engineering.

Students can apply for the support programme by submitting the requisition form and other documents to the address: Project Director (Data Repository of Scientific Instrumentation), PCSIR Head Office Building, 1-Constitution Avenue, Sector G-5/2, Islamabad , the official conveyed.
