Want To Learn Arduino? Get Building With These Arduino Projects!

In this article, I cover the 30 best Arduino projects you need to build in 2024, including a range of cool Arduino project ideas for beginners and more advanced users.

One of the best ways to learn all about Arduino is to get hands-on with project-based learning.

But what can you do with Arduino projects in 2024? Honestly, I think the possibilities are nearly limitless! It all comes down to imagination!

Whether you’re intrigued by automation systems, robotics, or interactive art installations, Arduino projects enable all this and much, much more.

They’re also an excellent way to hone your electronics skills if you’re actively looking for jobs in IoT .

So, if you’re driven by a desire to innovate, have a passion for technology, or enjoy creating, let’s dive into some fun Arduino projects!

  • What Is Arduino?

If you’re new to Arduino, you’re probably wondering, what exactly is Arduino?

Great question! Let me cover the basics before we dive into some easy Arduino projects!

Arduino is an open-source electronics platform consisting of easy-to-use hardware and software.

You'll often hear about Arduino and Raspberry Pi when it comes to microelectronics in 2024, but that's a discussion for another day.

An Arduino board is a programmable microcontroller that includes various inputs and outputs (I/O), like serial communication, digital inputs and outputs, and analog inputs.

This is very cool indeed and a far cry from the basic breadboards I used to learn about electronics during my undergraduate studies.

Arduino boards are typically used in a free and open-source development environment. Combining these allows you to write, upload, and execute code that controls your device, invention, or project.

One of the coolest ways to use Arduino is to get creative, whether you want to build a simple LED light device or are interested in IoT (Internet of Things) or robotics.

And if you’re just starting out, there’s a huge and active Arduino community that offers support, shares their own projects, and more.

Of course, if you’re brand new to the world of Arduino and you’re not sure where to start, we’d definitely recommend complementing your projects with an Arduino course.

  • What Skills Do You Need For Arduino Projects?

Let's set the record straight: you don’t need to be an expert to start working on Arduino projects! In fact, I genuinely think that Arduino projects can be great for all skill levels.

That said, you should probably have some basic skills before you get started, or at least be willing to learn them!

For example, Arduino projects usually involve C++ coding if you're building from scratch, so consider a C++ course if this sounds like fun, but you're not familiar with the language.

Let's take a look at the basics I think you should have to follow along with our Arduino projects:

  • Basic programming knowledge: Even if you’re following along with someone else’s code, basic programming knowledge is useful for figuring out any issues that may come up.
  • C or C++ skills: Arduino is based on C++, so it's really helpful to have C++ skills to create your own projects from scratch.
  • Basic electronics knowledge: Arduino projects involve working with various electrical components, so it’s essential to understand the basics of current, voltage, and resistance.
  • Ability to read schematics: Arduino projects often come with schematics that make them easy to replicate, so you’ll need to be able to read these to work with these kits or projects.

I should point out that it’s also really easy for complete beginners to pick up easy Arduino projects and learn these skills along the way.

But if you are feeling uncertain, I also think it helps to pick up an Arduino book for some extra help if you're brand new to the area.

I know from experience that it's always nice to have some reference materials on hand!

  • Best Arduino Projects for Beginners in 2024

To get things started, I'll start with ten Arduino starter projects that are generally on the simpler side.

This means they require less time to put together, and they're also a great way to get a taste of what you can do with Arduino!

1. PC Info Panels

Arduino LCD Info panel for PC (LCD Smartie)

Download Source Code

:

: Controls a 16x2 LCD display to show information about the system

Why We Chose This Project

First up on our list is one of the best beginner Arduino projects for newbies. I really like this as a gentle introduction, as you’ll use an Arduino Nano to interface between an LCD display and your computer’s USB port.

Once the electrical components are assembled, you can use open-source software called LCD Smartie to show different kinds of information on your LCD screen, including system stats like network utilization, CPU load, disk space, and more.

I also like that you can use your info panel to download RSS feeds or run other applications. Very cool!

2. Vintage Screensaver

Vintage Screensaver

:

(an clone)

: This project is a program with 9 screensaver options inspired by old screensavers from the 90s

This might be appealing to me because of the nostalgia, but if you're new to Arduino, simple projects like this vintage screensaver are a great way to start!

Inspired by 90s screensavers, you can get a healthy dose of 90s retro styling with the TVOUT and a Yourduino.

I also like that there are nine screensavers to choose from, making it a fun way to create an interesting decorative piece and even reuse an old CRT display.

Although you might need to dig around for a CRT display, as they're not very common anymore!

3. ArduSniffer

Gas Detector

:

: This USB-powered project is a gas detector that displays the amount of gas detected on its LED display

I really like this one, as it's a genuinely useful project! With the ArduSniffer, you can create a USB-powered gas detector with an LED display.

Sure, it does have more components than the first two projects on our list, but I want to gradually introduce you to more challenging projects as we work down the list.

That said, I think this is a great way to level up your skills. Plus, it's pretty affordable and offers detailed instructions.

4. Bluetooth Controlled RC Car

:

: A Bluetooth remote-controlled car that you can control with an app on your smartphone

If you like remote-controlled cars (we’ve all had one at some point, right?!), you'll love this project, as it uses Bluetooth, an app on your phone, and an Arduino.

I like that the instructions are pretty basic, as it makes it easy for you to put the car together and make it work.

But if you want to get creative, you can use a 3D printer (or printing service) to design a body for the car!

5. Stroboscope (Zoetrope)

Stroboscope (Zoetrope)

:

: This project uses a CD and a brushless motor with an Arduino to create a spinning Zoetrope.

A zoetrope , sometimes called a stroboscope, is a pre-film mechanical device that gives the illusion of animation or motion. I love this project, and it's great if you’re a cinema fan!

To build this Arduino project, you can reuse a defunct Xbox 360 CD drive with a spindle motor to recreate this cool gadget.

You get all the instructions and source code you need in the instructable, making this a great way to create a short animation (or the illusion of one).

6. Portable Temp/Humidity Sensor with an LCD Display

:

: Power Bank powered temperature and humidity sensor with an LCD display

I think this portable temperature and humidity sensor is a fun beginner Arduino project, as it's easy to understand really relatable.

This particular project uses an Arduino UNO R3, but you can use any 5V Arduino board you choose, and you can even purchase new parts or salvage some from your old projects.

The code, which was made using the Adafruit DHT library, is included in the instructions, and you can power your sensor using a power bank to display data in real time.

7. Simple Programmable Robotic Arm

:

: A simple yet programmable robotic servo arm

Do you like robots? If the answer is yes, read on!

This is one of the best Arduino robot projects for beginners, as you'll create a simple and programmable servo arm using Arduino UNO and the Arduino IDE.

The robot arm itself uses buttons and potentiometers to record and play five programmed positions.

I like that this can be powered by your computer’s USB port, but you can also use an external power supply if you ensure the servo can handle it.

It's easy to make the bot arm from readily available materials, and the code and circuit schematics are included.

8. Nano Piano

:

: A small and simple Arduino-based piano

Do you fancy yourself as Beethoven or Bach? Just kidding, but if you like music, this is a cool Arduino project.

It is a beginner-friendly project with all the schematics and code you need to build a miniature piano with four keys using the Arduino Nano Every.

I also like that you can tailor the Nano Piano to your style by choosing your base (perf or protoboard) and deciding whether you want to create a housing with 3D printing!

9. Coin Sorter

 Coin Sorting Machine using Arduino

:

: This project is an Arduino-based coin sorter that uses infrared sensors

Do you have pockets full of change you don't know what to do with? Maybe, maybe not! I mean, who uses real money anymore, right?!

That said, if you’ve ever wanted to sort your coins, this simple Arduino project might be one to try.

All you need is an Arduino UNO, a 16x2 display, and an infrared (IR) sensor to detect the differences between each coin, sending them through the appropriate hole.

I need to point out that it’s super important to follow the instructions as accurately as possible. This includes marking and cutting the sorting holes precisely and ensuring the slopes are appropriately angled.

You can even create a simple prototype from cardboard or 3D print a body for the sorter.

10. Blind Spot Monitoring System

Blindspot Monitoring System

:

: Active ambient lighting inside a car that will blink whenever a vehicle is detected in the blind spot(s)

Rounding out our list of projects for beginners, this is a really interesting Arduino project if you're intrigued by real-world microelectronics applications.

In fact, this project even takes its inspiration from the 2021 Mercedes Benz S-Class, which used ambient lighting to blink when a vehicle is detected in the blind spot. We've probably all seen these features in modern cars now, but it was revolutionary at the time.

In this case, we’ll be using an Arduino Uno and an RGB LED light strip to mimic the same thing. You can also set it to blink different colors depending on the position of the other vehicle relative to yours.

While there are many Arduino LED Projects to choose from, I really like this one as it's incredibly beginner-friendly and relatable.

  • Cool Arduino Projects for Intermediate Users

Do you feel ready to take it to the next level? Let’s take a look at some intermediate-level projects!

11. Emotive Plant Pot

Emotive Plant Pot

:

: An adorable plant pot that shows “emotions” with faces on the LCD display

Ready for some more fun Arduino project ideas? Great, how do you feel about making an Emotive Plant Pot?

Now, let me take a second to say that this is not going to be Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy (I know!), but it's actually a 3D-printed plant pot with an LCD display that you can use to show cute faces.

You can even 3D print the components yourself with the included files. Just use the detailed instructions and schematics, and away you go!

12. Touch Interface Controlled Robotic Arm

Touch Interface Controlled Robotic Arm

:

: A more complex robotic arm with a graphic touch interface for control

We're back to robotics! If this is something you like, definitely check out this touch interface robotic arm.

All you need is an Arduino and any older Android phone to get started. I think this is also a cool way to get more mileage from older tech!

Now, as you'd expect, this project is a little more complex, but the schematics and code are provided, and there’s even an assembly guide with a clear video to demonstrate the steps.

You can also 3D print the components yourself or use a 3D printing service with the provided files.

Note that creator Maurizio Miscio states you can contact him for the graphical interface app’s code.

13. Hidden Smart Bookshelf

Hidden Smart Bookshelf

:

: A Google Home-integrated hidden bookshelf

This one just sounds cool, so I had to include it! The idea here is to create a Hidden Smart Home Bookshelf that you can use to conceal items within a cabinet or shelf that’s meant to look like a full bookshelf.

The creator has even included a very detailed video to cover the building and assembly process.

If you want to access the Arduino source code, head over to the creator’s GitHub , and you can either follow along exactly or make your own improvements.

I also think that if you have extra space, you could scale this up into a concealed closet or door!

14. Neopixel Cake

Epic Neopixel Birthday Cake

: Natasha of Element14 Presents

: Cake-embedded flexible LED matrixes for making really cool light effects — on cake!

I think this is one of those super cool Arduino project ideas that you can use to make a splash at a party or special event.

Yep, you can make a uniquely memorable cake that uses flexible LED matrices and an Arduino.

The matrices themselves are embedded into the cake, then covered with fondant icing to allow light diffusion and a much better effect. Watch out Cake Boss!

I also found that you can even program cool light effects or text into the LED matrix so it can display whatever you want.

Just follow the detailed video demo and make sure you have a cake ready!

15. Automatic Humidifier

Automatic Humidifier

:

: A project that automatically turns a humidifier on when the detected humidity in the environment is below a set level.

If you live somewhere hot and dry, you probably know all too well how important it is to have a humidifier.

Well, you can build your own now! I love this project to create an automatic humidifier, and it's straight from the Arduino Project Hub.

This project revolves around using a DHT11 temperature and humidity sensor to detect environmental humidity, and this can trigger the humidifier whenever the detected humidity is below a set level.

16. CNC Drawing Machine

CNC Drawing Machine

:

: An Arduino CNC plotter that can write or draw anything, made from recycled DVD writers

This is another flashback for me to my undergraduate studies and the class I took in electronics and manufacturing.

The idea here with this Arduino project is to create a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) plotter out of an Arduino Nano board and two old DVD writers.

This is definitely another slightly old-school project, but I love the way it can be used to create 2D or 3D images on plain or smooth surfaces with an Arduino and a printing mechanism.

17. 32-Band Audio Spectrum Visualizer Analyzer

32-Band Audio Spectrum Visualizer Analyzer

:

: A 32-band audio visualizer

This is another project for music lovers, as it's a cool Arduino project to create a 32-band audio or music frequency visualizer (also called an analyzer).

I found that this audio visualizer mixes signals from the left and right channels to ensure no beats are missed, and it also has five display modes that you can switch with the push of a button.

It's also cool that the audio feed can be taken from a line out or the headphone port of an amplifier or sound system!

18. Mind Control Drone

Mind Control Drone

:

: Create a drone you can control by making it lift off with your mind

Now we’re not promising that this project will make you into the next Charles Xavier, but with a Mindwave Neurosky sensor and an Arduino, you can have a slice of this futuristic idea by building a mind control drone.

Let me make it super clear! This project doesn’t allow you to fly a drone with your mind, per se.

But you can control the drone’s liftoff and landing with your mind, which is pretty cool!

I think this is an awesome project for learning how to hack a PCB and control it digitally.

It’s also worth mentioning that the creator warns that you may mess up your drone and its controller when building this project, so be careful !

19. IoT Pet Feeder

:

, or:

: An app-controlled smart pet food dispenser for your beloved animals

If you’re looking for Arduino IoT Projects, this is a great choice, as you can build a smart food dispenser that can be controlled from your phone.

I like these kinds of projects, as they're practical and great for enthusiasts who also want to pursue a career in electronics.

All you'll need to create it is an Arduino UNO, a servo, a PIR motion sensor, and a small speaker.

You can even adapt this project and turn it into an automatic bird or squirrel feeder for your backyard!

Feel free to set your smart pet feeder up any way you’d like, but the default instructions are designed to set the feeder to beep at a set interval. Then, when your pet investigates the sound, a PIR motion sensor triggers the servo to dispense food.

If you’re a fan of Back to the Future, think of this as your own way to feed your very own Einstein!

20. Smart Dustbin

: Nevon Projects

: A full kit including everything you need to put together a smart dustbin that sends IoT notifications

Rounding out our intermediate project list, this is a full project kit that you can use to create a hands-free, self-operating dustbin that's controlled with claps or foot taps.

This is pretty cool and a great way to add some electronic magic to your ordinary household items. You’ll just need an audio sensor to detect your claps or taps.

The dustbin can also send IoT notifications to let users know when the bin is full, thanks to an ultrasonic sensor that detects garbage levels.

  • The Best Arduino Projects for Advanced Users

If you feel like your Arduino skills are at the expert level, or if you’re feeling adventurous, these advanced projects might be the right ones for you. Let’s take a look!

21. Star Tracker (Low Cost)

OG star tracker

:

and a tripod

: An affordable star tracker that’s quite user-friendly

If you like looking into space, this is a great Arduino project, as it uses an equatorial mount to take pictures of the sky at night.

If you’re not 100% sure what that means, no problem!

An equatorial mount is a telescope mount that allows telescopes or cameras to follow the earth’s rotation, ensuring any long exposures come out clearly.

I also found that this project creator claimed the Star Tracker is easier than putting together Ikea furniture and just about as affordable. What an endorsement!

Despite being an advanced project, the Star Tracker is relatively user-friendly, with all the requirements listed in the GitHub repo.

Be sure to share your photos with us after you build this project!

22. The Gaggiuino Coffee Machine

The Gaggiuino Coffee Machine

:

: A project to improve a highly capable Gaggia coffee machine while keeping its appearance and button functionalities as close to the original as possible

Do you like coffee? I have a strong suspicion that the answer is yes!

In that case, this is one of the best Arduino projects for you! But you don’t need to be an engineering student to give it an espresso shot (get it?).

This project uses an Arduino or an STM32 Blackpill to create a “smart coffee” experience, where the end product is an aftermarket mod of many coffeemakers.

There’s even an active community around this mod, which you can find on their Discord server , along with videos from project users.

23. Automated Bean Sprouter

Automated Bean Sprouter

:

(or use a 3D printing service)

: Automatically waters bean sprouts for you on an hourly basis

If you like the idea of self-sustainability and growing your own foods, you might be intrigued by this project! What's more, if you love bean sprouts, you have to try it!

The idea here is to build your own automated bean sprouter by using stacked trays, a rotating motor, and a watering system to keep your sprouts hydrated while helping air circulate and keep mold growth at bay.

This is another super practical project that you can actually use in your daily life, which I really like.

The project page includes all the necessary information, including the component list, schematics, and code.

As an advanced project, it’s not the easiest, but you’ll never need to buy sprouts again!

24. UV Meter and Breathalyzer Keychain

UV Meter & Breathalyzer Keychain - 3D Printed - IoT Blynk

:

: An IoT breathalyzer and UV meter keychain

This is a really interesting Arduino project that uses a UV sensor to create your own alcohol breathalyzer in the form of a keychain.

All you need to create this handy keychain is an Arduino Pro Mini 328 and an Arduino UNO (or FTDI). The keychain itself is powered by three 200mAh Li-ion batteries that you can recharge via the USB charging port.

To finish things off, you will use an OLED screen to display everything you need.

Detailed instructions are provided with this project, including 3D files so you can print the spherical casing yourself (or get it printed by a 3D printing service).

25. Path Memorizing Robot

:

: This robot car memorizes and repeats its action or path

I like this project, as it's a classic for electronics students and anyone interested in self-driving cars.

You'll just need to use an Arduino Uno to control a little robotic car designed to navigate through a predefined path before returning to its starting point.

Before you create this path-memorizing robot, you’ll need to build a regular remote-controlled car using an IR receiver and remote.

But this is super easy if you follow the instructions and use all the provided code and schematics.

26. Arduino 3D Wire Bending Machine

:

: This is a cool little project that allows you to bend your wires, creating 3D designs automatically

I think this is a cool project if you like to be creative with industrial materials.

The idea here is to create an Arduino-based wire-bending machine that you can use to bend wires into all sorts of 3D designs.

You'll use an Arduino to control the motor and wire feeder movements, while a 3D-printed jig allows the machine to bend the wire into your desired shapes.

I also like that you can bend wire of varying shapes and diameters and adjust the radius and bending angle.

This project itself involves mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering all in one, making it a fantastic choice for engineering students or professionals.

27. Camera Slider

:

: This DIY camera slider is a fantastic way to get cinematic video shots without spending tons of money

Here, we have another cool Arduino project for photography enthusiasts.

In fact, if you've ever wanted to create cinematic shots with your camera, you might have considered a camera slider. Well, this is the project for you!

The plan here is to create a motorized slider for your camera that will allow you to achieve smooth movements and get cinematic shots.

You’ll need aluminum, a timing belt, and stepper motors, along with an Arduino to move the camera. You also need a rotary encoder that allows you to move the slider back and forth.

You can use practically any camera you want in this rig, as long as it can attach to the DSLR mount!

28. Self-Parking Car with Ultrasonic Sensor

: Nevon Projects

: An Arduino-powered car that parks itself in vacant spots

Maybe you fancy yourself as the next competitor to Elon Musk’s Tesla?

Or maybe you just think self-parking cars sound cool?

Either way, I think this is a really fun build that allows you to create an advanced self-parking car via path-finding algorithms.

All you need to dois order the full kit, and you’ll be ready to get building!

29. LED Cube

:

:

: A cube made of 512 LED lights that users can program cool lighting effects and patterns into

We're getting close to the end of our list, and I thought it would be fun to include something cool to look at!

With this LED Cube project, you can build a complex LED cube with 512 LED lights, and this can be programmed to show cool lighting patterns and all sorts of effects.

I also really appreciate that the creator documents the building process in a YouTube video, making it easy for you to follow along.

Schematics and code are all provided, so all you need to do is gather the components, and you’re ready to build!

30. Magnet Plant Levitation System

Arduino Air Bonsai Levitation

:

: A plant pot that allows you to levitate your mini plant using electromagnetic fields

Here we are, the final Arduino project on my list!

And what a way to wrap things up, but with a super cool Arduino project that suspends a plant in mid-air by using the power of electromagnetic fields.

It honestly feels like science fiction, but nope, this really works! Just follow the tutorial, as it offers a detailed guide, including the STL files for the 3D-printed components.

I know the list of components required for this project is long, but I really think the end result is totally worth it to build a plant levitator!

5 xbox game pass drawbacks you should keep in mind, why i never delete old photos from my phone.

If you're interested in electronics at all, you've heard of the Arduino open-source electronic prototyping platform . If you're just hearing about it now, you're in for some fun!

Arduino is an  open-source  hardware design, so anyone can use the plans to make and sell their own boards. The companies that make the different boards also offer a variety of beginner's kits, which typically include an Arduino (or "Arduino compatible") board and all sorts of electronic components: bread board for prototyping, sensors, relays, servo controllers and motors, jumper wires, LEDs …or any combination of those and more.

different types electronics components

The official Arduino starter kit is overpriced at well over $100, and doesn't come with an awful lot of components. Instead, consider this third party Arduino-compatible starter kit from Sunfounder, which comes with a number of LEDs, dials, and other fun stuff. It's one of the favorite Arduino kits around here. If you want to see if working with electronics is something you'll like , what's $60?

The Elego UNO Project Super Starter Kit is another well-appointed set. It's also under $60 and you get a good board with a lot of quality electronics components.

Most people will do the common beginner's projects like making a traffic light . But you're a MakeUseOf.com reader . You're amazing. So why not let your first Arduino project be amazingly cool too? Let's take a look at 5 different amazing and unique projects anyone can make with an Arduino starter kit. Read all the way to the end to see one device that could be so fun, it's scary.

Detect Lies with Tin Foil, Wire, and Arduino

This is just for fun. You can't really detect lies with this project. But you can learn about how what we think and feel affects what our body does. That's pretty cool. This project detects electrodermal activity . You might know it as galvanic skin response (GSR), from TV cop shows.

finger electrode for diy lie detector

Everything you need to build this is in the kit, except some tin foil and Velcro. There's a good chance you have those in the house already. Basically, you connect a ground wire to the tinfoil, make an electrode wrap, hook that up to the Arduino properly and add the right program. An Arduino program is called a "sketch" . Then have some fun asking your friends questions and see what the device says.

A Simple Arduino Battery Tester

Anybody can use a store-bought battery tester, but not just anyone can build one. Okay, maybe anyone can if they have an Arduino starter kit. Using your Arduino board, 3 LEDS, bread board, a Zener diode , and some of the jumper wires, you can make a unit to tell you roughly how much juice is left in your battery. Plus it gives you an excuse to say Zener diode. Throw that in your next conversation with your buddies for some instant electronics geek cred .

If you enjoy making that one, consider adding a readout to your LCD module. Then you could get exact voltages. If your kit doesn't come with a Zener diode, you can get 10 of them for about $7.00 . Never hurts to have a few spares. Gives you more chances to say Zener diode later on.

Home Made Arduino RADAR

One of the great things about learning to build stuff with an Arduino, is how it can often help you learn about other technology. In this case, it's radio detection and ranging (RADAR).

Using the ultrasonic sensor, servo controller and motor, the Arduino board and some other bits, you can make a sweeping RADAR device. If you take the time to work out the math in the sketch, it can be surprisingly accurate about the distance of things it sees. This project uses another piece of software called Processing , which looks a lot like the Arduino app, but is used to visualise the ultrasonic sensor output.

Sure, it's a very short-range RADAR, but also very cool looking and will give you lots of other ideas about using ultrasonic sensors in other projects.

Snake Game on an 8x8 Matrix Using Arduino

For many people, their interest in electronics came from playing handheld electronic games . Why not make a game as one of your first projects? The classic snake game can be built with the Elego starter kit mentioned earlier. If you never had a flip phone, this is the game where you have to keep from biting your own tail as long as you can. If you're older than flip phones , no explanation is needed. You got this.

You'll use the Arduino UNO, 8x8 LED dot matrix display, shift register component , 16x2 LCD, 1K potentiometer , 4 push buttons, connecting wires, bread board, and power supply. Here you can find the schematic and code samples . It's not the simplest beginner's project , but if you've already built the beginner projects that come with the kit, you're ready for this.

Arduino EMF Detector  a.k.a. Ghost Detector

This is the one you were curious about. An EMF detector is a device that senses the electro magnetic force given off of anything electronic that has power. Ghost hunters claim it can detect spirits, too. Seriously, what show with anything supernatural on it hasn't used an EMF detector? None. Plus with the Ghostbusters reboot coming soon, this could be a cool prop for your Hallowe'en costume . Or maybe you just want to see if great aunt Martha really is still hanging around.

The first one in the video above gives its results via a single LED. But you could do so much more! You could try the LED bar also shown in the video, or have an EMF count show on a 7-segment display, or have it make a sound with a piezo buzzer, kind of like a Geiger counter. If you're feeling adventurous, try building in LEDs, an analog gauge, and the piezo buzzer. Once you've built the basic one, you'll probably be able to figure out a Sam and Dean Winchester approved version.

You Can Do It

Those are just five really cool Arduino projects for beginners. You're not limited to what comes in the project books that come with some kits. Take to the Internet, search out things you think you'd like to build. When it comes to Arduino, chances are someone has already done something similar. The DIY community is all about sharing. So many people are more than happy to share how they did it with you. Just pay them back by making sure you share too. Need more ideas? Check out these  6 coolest Arduino projects .

17 Cool Arduino Project Ideas for DIY Enthusiasts

Ankush Das

Arduino is an open-source electronics platform that combines both open source software and hardware to let people make interactive projects with ease. You can get Arduino-compatible single board computers and use them to make something useful.

In addition to the hardware, you will also need to know the Arduino language to use the Arduino IDE to successfully create something.

You can code using the web editor or use the Arduino IDE offline. Nevertheless, you can always refer to the official resources available to learn about Arduino.

Considering that you know the essentials, I will be mentioning some of the best (or interesting) Arduino projects. You can try to make them for yourself or modify them to come up with something of your own.

Interesting Arduino project ideas for beginners, experts, everyone

Arduino Project Ideas

The following projects need a variety of additional hardware – so make sure to check out the official link to the projects ( originally featured on the official Arduino Project Hub ) to learn more about them.

Also, it is worth noting that they aren’t particularly in any ranking order – so feel free to try what sounds best to you.

1. LED Controller

Looking for simple Arduino projects? Here’s one for you.

One of the easiest projects that let you control LED lights. Yes, you do not have to opt for expensive LED products just to decorate your room (or for any other use-case), you can simply make an LED controller and customize it to use it however you want.

It requires using the Arduino UNO board and a couple more things (which also includes an Android phone). You can learn more about it in the link to the project below.

2. Hot Glue LED Matrix Lamp

Led Matrix Lamp

Another Arduino LED project for you. Since we are talking about using LEDs to decorate, you can also make an LED lamp that looks beautiful.

For this, you might want to make sure that you have a 3D printer. Next, you need an LED strip and Arduino Nano R3 as the primary materials.

Once you’ve printed the case and assembled the lamp section, all you need to do is to add the glue sticks and figure out the wiring. It does sound very simple to mention – you can learn more about it on the official Arduino project feature site.

3. Arduino Mega Chess

Arduino Chess Board

Want to have a personal digital chessboard? Why not?

You’ll need a TFT LCD touch screen display and an Arduino Mega 2560 board as the primary materials. If you have a 3D printer, you can create a pretty case for it and make changes accordingly.

Take a look at the original project for inspiration.

4. Enough Already: Mute My TV

A very interesting project. I wouldn’t argue the usefulness of it – but if you’re annoyed by certain celebrities (or personalities) on TV, you can simply mute their voice whenever they’re about to speak something on TV.

Technically, it was tested with the old tech back then (when you didn’t really stream anything). You can watch the video above to get an idea and try to recreate it or simply head to the link to read more about it.

5. Robot Arm with Controller

Robotic Arm Controller

If you want to do something with the help of your robot and still have manual control over it, the robot arm with a controller is one of the most useful Arduino projects. It uses the Arduino UNO board if you’re wondering.

You will have a robot arm -for which you can make a case using the 3D printer to enhance its usage and you can use it for a variety of use-cases. For instance, to clean the carbage using the robot arm or anything similar where you don’t want to directly intervene.

6. Make Musical Instrument Using Arduino

I’ve seen a variety of musical instruments made using Arduino. You can explore the Internet if you want something different than this.

You would need a Pi supply flick charge and an Arduino UNO to make it happen. It is indeed a cool Arduino project where you get to simply tap and your hand waves will be converted to music. Also, it isn’t tough to make this – so you should have a lot of fun making this.

7. Pet Trainer: The MuttMentor

An Arduino-based device that assists you to help train your pet – sounds exciting!

For this, they’re using the Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense while utilizing TensorFlow to train a small neural network for all the common actions that your pet does. Accordingly, the buzzer will offer a reinforcing notification when your pet obeys your command.

This can have wide applications when tweaked as per your requirements. Check out the details below.

8. Basic Earthquake Detector

Normally, you depend on the government officials to announce/inform about the earthquake stats (or the warning for it).

But with Arduino boards, you can simply build a basic earthquake detector and have transparent results for yourself without depending on the authorities. Click on the button below to know about the relevant details to help make it.

9. Security Access Using RFID Reader

Security Access Arduino

As the project describes – “ RFID tagging is an ID system that uses small radio frequency identification “.

So, in this project, you will be making an RFID reader using Arduino while pairing it with an Adafruit NFC card for security access. Check out the full details using the button below and let me know how it works for you.

10. Smoke Detection using MQ-2 Gas Sensor

Smoke Detection Arduino

This could be potentially one of the best Arduino projects out there. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to equip smoke detectors for your home, you can manage with a DIY solution to some extent.

Of course, unless you want a complex failsafe set up along with your smoke detector, a basic inexpensive solution should do the trick. In either case, you can also find other applications for the smoke detector.

11. Arduino Based Amazon Echo using 1Sheeld

Diy Amazon Echo

In case you didn’t know 1Sheeld basically replaces the need for an add-on Arduino board. You just need a smartphone and add Arduino shields to it so that you can do a lot of things with it.

Using 5 such shields, the original creator of this project made himself a DIY Amazon Echo. You can find all the relevant details, schematics, and code to make it happen.

12. Audio Spectrum Visualizer

Audio Spectrum Visualizer

Just want to make something cool? Well, here’s an idea for an audio spectrum visualizer.

For this, you will need an Arduino Nano R3 and an LED display as primary materials to get started with. You can tweak the display as required. You can connect it with your headphone output or simply a line-out amplifier.

Easily one of the cheapest Arduino projects that you can try for fun.

13. Motion Following Motorized Camera

Motion Following Camera

Up for a challenge? If you are – this will be one of the coolest Arduino Projects in our list.

Basically, this is meant to replace your home security camera which is limited to an angle of video recording. You can turn the same camera into a motorized camera that follows the motion.

So, whenever it detects a movement, it will change its angle to try to follow the object. You can read more about it to find out how to make it.

14. Water Quality Monitoring System

Water Quality Monitoring

If you’re concerned about your health in connection to the water you drink, you can try making this.

It requires an Arduino UNO and the water quality sensors as the primary materials. To be honest, a useful Arduino project to go for. You can find everything you need to make this in the link below.

15. Punch Activated Arm Flamethrower

I would be very cautious about this – but seriously, one of the best (and coolest) Arduino projects I’ve ever come across.

Of course, this counts as a fun project to try out to see what bigger projects you can pull off using Arduino and here it is. In the project, he originally used the SparkFun Arduino Pro Mini 328 along with an accelerometer as the primary materials.

16. Polar Drawing Machine

Polar Drawing Machine

This isn’t any ordinary plotter machine that you might’ve seen people creating using Arduino boards.

With this, you can draw some cool vector graphics images or bitmap. It might sound like bit of overkill but then it could also be fun to do something like this.

This could be a tricky project, so you can refer to the details on the link to go through it thoroughly.

17. Home Automation

Technically, this is just a broad project idea because you can utilize the Arduino board to automate almost anything you want at your home.

Just like I mentioned, you can go for a security access device, maybe create something that automatically waters the plants or simply make an alarm system.

Countless possibilities of what you can do to automate things at your home. For reference, I’ve linked to an interesting home automation project below.

Bonus: Robot Cat (OpenCat)

Opencat

A programmable robotic cat for AI-enhanced services and STEM education. In this project, both Arduino and Raspberry Pi boards have been utilized.

You can also look at the Raspberry Pi alternatives if you want. This project needs a lot of work, so you would want to invest a good amount of time to make it work.

Wrapping Up

With the help of Arduino boards (coupled with other sensors and materials), you can do a lot of projects with ease. Some of the projects that I’ve listed above are suitable for beginners and some are not. Feel free to take your time to analyze what you need and the cost of the project before proceeding.

Did I miss listing an interesting Arduino project that deserves the mention here? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

13 Beginner Sewing Project Kits to Help You on Your Sewing Journey

Good morning, afternoon, or evening, my fellow sewing nerds! I am super excited to dive into today’s topic because it’s important to discuss, especially for beginners. What are we talking about today? We’re going to discuss “all the things” surrounding beginner sewing project kits.

These kits can be SO helpful when you first start your sewing hobby. They usually consist of a beginner-friendly project and all the necessary materials to complete it. Let’s get into it and see just how special sewing kits can be for the sewing beginner.

Page Contents

What Should Be in a Basic Sewing Kit?

Some think of a sewing kit as a little basket with commonly used sewing tools and notions. That’s not what this post is about. This post focuses on pre-made sewing project kits with all the materials to create a specific item.

fabric scissors thread table paper beginner sewing project kits

However, a sewing project kit doesn’t usually include those essential items you need for general sewing. Here is a list of items you will need for all sorts of sewing projects.

  • Sewing machine
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Marking tool
  • Needles (if you need to sew by hand)
  • Thread
  • Pins (I recommend having a mixture of safety and straight pins)
  • Seam ripper

If you would prefer to purchase a kit that includes everything you need to start sewing, check out this post where I break down everything you should have and show you five excellent sewing kit options.

What Is the Best Beginner Sewing Project?

This is one of those questions: if you asked 100 different sewing enthusiasts, you would get 100 different answers. What would my answer be? Well, my advice is to choose a beginner-friendly sewing project that excites you.

If you are excited about a project, you will likely finish it and enjoy the process. If making a simple quilt doesn’t sound fun, don’t do it! If you have no desire to sew an apron or other kitchen-related items, skip them!

Sewing should be enjoyed, especially when you are learning how to sew. Here is a list of a few beginner sewing projects I recommend to those curious about sewing.

  • Zipper pouch
  • Pot holders
  • Simple quilt
  • A-line dress
  • Fabric basket
  • Stuffed animals
  • Dog bandana

The list could go on and on, but this should give you a good idea of the many different areas of sewing that offer beginner-friendly projects.

What Can I Sew in an Hour?

Most items I just listed in the previous section can be sewn in under an hour. Remember, when you start first, take your time and do not rush the sewing process. You want to get used to sewing straight lines and learn how to use a sewing machine.

Here are a few more items you could sew in an hour or less.

  • Fabric bookmark
  • Reusable makeup wipes
  • Soup bowl cozy
  • Microwavable heating pad
  • Sewing machine cover

project kit ideas

With almost a year of social distancing behind us, you might be running out of TV shows to watch , puzzles to complete, and meditation apps to try. But if you’re hunting for a new project that will keep your hands busy and your mind focused, may we suggest a craft kit? Sure, arts and crafts may seem like a childish preoccupation to you, but even as an adult, crafting can offer delight and distraction , and may even give you something you can display at home (or send to a distant friend or family member who’s in need of cheer).

All products are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission.

The Best STEM Kits That Engage, Entertain and Educate

STEM Kits are an amazing tool when looking for STEM Projects for kids. When I first started doing STEM projects with my children, I often found myself scrambling to find all the items and tools we needed. Not to mention trying to find inspiration! With quality STEM kits everything is in one place, making life so much easier! STEM kits come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, there really is something for everyone. Here I’ve gathered up my favourite STEM Kits, including what’s in my DIY STEM Kit.

The Best STEM Kits For Kids

Why teach STEM and use STEM Kits?

The most important reason I love STEM kits is that it makes it easy for me to put together lessons and activities for my kids. In most of these kits, everything is provided. Just open the box and start exploring!

But maybe you are also wondering, Why STEM ? Well STEM teaches incredible problem solving and critical thinking skills for all ages. It covers many core subjects (science, technology, engineering and math) in an inclusive way that aligns with how these skills are applied in the real world.

STEM Kits come in a variety of different forms, for all grades, abilities and interests. Some are more focused on one aspect of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). There are definitely different skill levels required for different kits, although I have found it is better to err on the site of a little older and provide extra adult assistance rather than too young or low in the skill level requirements. Those just get boring for the kids.

It’s important to read up on each one to see if it covers the aspects of STEM that most interests your children or aligns with your lesson plans. These kits all feature a lot of innovation and fun projects, but only if you and your kids find the particular theme interesting.

I’ve broken down my list into three sections: monthly STEM kits, project specific kits, and how to build your own STEM kit. Plus, I have included STEM kit ideas for preschoolers to teenagers. STEM is important and fun for students of all ages!

STEM Kits and STEM Toys

These STEM kits tend to have specific uses but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a great deal of STEM learning that comes from investing in these kits. Many of these can be used for years, adapting and changing as children grow and learn new skills, which also makes them perfect for a group setting or large family.

We love Osmo! It is a fantastic educational STEAM program for elementary that provides a high quality, gamified learning experience that kids love. It is a great way to get kids practicing important skills such as working with money, coding and more. But since they are doing it in such a fun way they don’t even realize how much they are learning and mastering the concepts. It is brilliant!

Monthly STEM Kits and Science Kits

I really love monthly STEM Kit programs. If you are new to this concept, you purchase a subscription and each month a box full of experiments and project pieces arrives at your door. They are incredibly convenient. There are some amazing STEM kits out there and we’ve tried so many of them over the years. A few stand out as big winners in our books.

Creation Crate – Has long been one of our favourite STEM subscription programs. We have been fans of theirs for over 5 years and over that time they have only gotten better and expanded to offer so many amazing courses. The key difference with Creation Crate is that it is truly an educational tool and STEM curriculum. Each box builds on the previous lessons leading to subject mastery.

We love a great chemistry experiment and MEL Science delivers in a big way! Their projects are incredibly fun and exciting. Imagine those awesome chemistry sets we used to be able to buy. Or those cool lab experiments we did in high school and university. The MEL Science experiment kits have everything you need to conduct fascinating science experiments and labs. The best thing about their boxes is that they explore reactions and science and include lessons to really develop children’s scientific knowledge. You can also immerse yourself in their VR educational experience or attend live sessions with their scientists. MEL Science is a huge hit with my tweens and teens .

BUILD YOUR OWN STEM KIT

The great thing with STEM is that you can build your own STEM kit and even project specific kits. In fact, you will discover over time that you will naturally start building up tools and resources for STEM work. One of the things I love about buying monthly kits is that so many of the items go into our STEM bin to be used for all sorts of things in the future. If you are considering building your own STEM kit, first consider what kind of work you are most interested in doing. STEM is a vast field, the only limitation is your imagination.

Tinkerspace

A great launching point is to build a Tinkerspace or Makerspace . This can be done on almost any budget and for all ages, at home, in the classroom, or anywhere kids gather, learn and grow.

How to Choose the Best Craft Kits for Adults

To find the best craft kits for adults, you may want to consider a few factors before you start your online or in-person shopping. Once you’ve selected the person you’re shopping for, consider the following:

  • What level crafter is the recipient? The kit you select may cater to a specific skill level, so it’s important to know if whom you’re shopping for is a beginner or an expert crafter.
  • What type of crafts do they enjoy? If they prefer simpler and repetitive tasks like cross-stitching or felt needling, you won’t want to give them an acrylic paint set that they may not enjoy using.
  • What is your price range? Once you identify your budget, you can look for specific gifts within that category to make shopping easier.

How to Get the Best Craft Kits for Adults Deals

You can’t screw up Arduino’s new DIY electronics kit

The $87 plug and make kit includes an arduino microcomputer, electronic components, and tutorials for building several iot devices..

A user plays a video game using a game controller assemble from the Arduino Plug and Make Kit.

Arduino’s new starter kit features electronic components that can be connected without having to know anything about soldering or wiring. It’s similar to LittleBits’ electronic building blocks that make it easy for kids to learn about electronics but targets an older audience of beginners who eventually aspire to do more with an Arduino.

The $87.36 Arduino Plug and Make Kit comes with an Arduino UNO R4 WiFi microcomputer featuring Bluetooth and its own built-in 12 x 8 LED matrix display, plus seven different Modulino components that can all be connected using cables that snap into one-way connector ports, ensuring nothing can be wired incorrectly.

The various electronic components included with the Arduino Plug and Make Kit.

The bundled Modulinos include an adjustable knob, a strip of dimmable LEDs, a movement sensor, a time-of-flight distance sensor, a buzzer, a thermometer and humidity sensor, and a set of three buttons. To help keep things organized, all of the components, including the Arduino, can be attached to a baseplate using included screws.

The Arduino Plug and Make Kit includes tutorials on how to use each component and step-by-step instructions on how to assemble them to build seven devices, such as a video game controller, a synthesizer, a touchless lamp, and an electronic hourglass timer.

The Plug and Make Kit is also compatible with all of the hardware and software in the Arduino ecosystem, including the Arduino Cloud platform, which allows users to share project ideas. Once those seven included projects are complete, they can find inspiration for their next creation.

Plug & play with Modulino®

The Plug and Make Kit offers a collection of seven Modulino® sensors and actuators, all included in the box:

  • Knob : for super-fine value setting
  • Pixels : eight LEDs to shine bright or dim down – you choose!
  • Distance : a time-of-flight proximity sensor to measure distances
  • Movement : to perfectly capture movements like pitch, roll or tilt
  • Buzzer : to compose your own alarm sounds or simple tunes
  • Thermo : a sensor for both temperature and humidity
  • Buttons : three buttons for quick user selection

Each Modulino simply connects via the UNO R4 WiFi’s onboard Qwiic connector: no breadboard, no soldering – and no wondering which side goes where, because the connector is polarized.

If you like the sense of accomplishment you get when things just click , you’ll love this : once you have a few nodes, you can keep your project looking neat by arranging everything on the Modulino Base structural frame.
