Giving students extra work to do doesn't really help them learn nor achieve things. Instead it makes students more tired in school and not wanting to do any work. Homework takes away from a student's sleep and reset time. Students stated that they feel like they have too much homework taking an average of 3-4 hours to complete which can lead to feeling incredibly irritable and tired the next day. This is especially true for students taking advanced classes. Research shows that,  “Homework is possibly the biggest factor that keeps teens from getting enough sleep…The sheer quantity of homework absorbs hours that should be dedicated to sleep”. To the point where sleeping is often the first thing students take away from their schedule. 

Teens with homework ultimately lose sleep in order to keep up with their homework and other after-school activities. Many students have other obligations after school, such as a job or school activities. Maintaining all their obligations adds extra stress which causes health problems and can even cause you to stay up the whole night just to finish all your work in one day. 

Therefore with homework students are most likely to give up fun activities, spend less time with friends and family, and stop doing their hobbies. It can also cause health issues such as headaches, exhaustion, sleep devastation but homework is also an important part of a student's education. The benefits of homework can be grades that can be affected when students become stressed about how much to do.

How is homework taking away free time from students ? While classroom time is important, playground time or what you like to say is free time. If children are given too much homework, they won't have enough free time, which can impact their social development and learning. Studies have found that those who get more play get better grades, as it can help them pay closer attention in class. Sedentary life can be dangerous and can cause obesity. Homework takes away from time that could be spent investing in physical activities. 

Many students get home and therefore the very first thing they are doing is homework. They pressured by their parents to try and do their homework while being encouraged to spend time with family, eat, and send time with friends, go outside participate in sports or other activities. Although this may be true, homework also has a positive effect towards people in that it can improve retention and understanding. 

More indirectly, homework can improve students' study skills and attitude towards school.  Finally homework involves parents in the school process, enhancing their appreciation of education, and allowing them to express a positive attitude towards the value of school sucess. Homework also helps the teacher. 

Grading homework for accuracy can be a very helpful tool for the teacher. This feedback informs the teacher about the state of their class and helps them adjust accordingly. They can cater their lessons to target areas in which students struggle. Homework has many beneficial aspects of it. As shown, homework helps parents become familiar with what the students are learning in school, it helps the students get more practice and benefits the teachers by allowing them to see what the students learned and if they can do it on their own. 

In conclusion, homework is a waste of time. When that time could have been spent with family and friends other than sitting in bed or at a desk staring at a piece of paper for hours just so you wake up, go to school, and do more work. Giving less homework will help students have more energy in the morning instead of being tired and lazy and understand things  better. Overall all of this homework is still a stress on kids where students don't even turn in their homework. They either lie and say it's at home when it's really inside their bags or they throw them in the trash can and some might say it helps teachers when in reality teachers don't really even check your homework.

Too much homework is the perennial complaint of students. When you are often hearing complaints of being overworked it can be hard to ascertain when it’s a legitimate concern or when students are just trying to take the path of least resistance. As a teacher, you want to make sure that you find a healthy balance — because if you give too little homework, students will be bored, but if you give too much, they will be overwhelmed.

In my years of teaching, I’ve found that giving less homework may actually produce better results. Here are a couple of reasons why you might want to consider reducing your students’ homework load.

1. Students are encouraged to learn

The goal of school should be to teach students how to learn and to love learning. You don’t just want to hand your students fish; You want to teach them how to fish. Lectures, discussions, and readings should all engage students and encourage them to get involved in the material.

Too often, though, teachers are overwhelmed and assign homework to try to cover material that didn’t have enough time to cover in class. Educators should avoid letting the homework “teach” the class. Instead, it should be used to practice what’s been covered in class or to give a very brief introduction to new material.

Homework assignments, when given, should at least be engaging. Try to find assignments that your students might enjoy, like creating a Facebook profile or blog for a character from a Shakespeare play you’re reading. I’ve found that when students have a more manageable homework load, they’re more excited about school and learning in general.

2. They are better rested and focused

Something that teachers need to remember is how very long school days can seem for students, especially for high schoolers, if they have hours and hours of homework. They normally arrive at school between 7 and 8 a.m., stay in school until 3 p.m., may have after-school activities until 5 or 6 p.m., and may not be able to start on homework until 7 or 8 p.m. after eating dinner. Even if your students have a homework load of just 1–2 hours, that means they won’t be able to get to bed until 9–10 p.m.

Sleep is incredibly important for growing children and teenagers. While students can definitely choose to pull all-nighters or stay up late for non-school-related reasons, teachers should strive to minimize the impact that homework and school have on their students’ sleep. Assigning less homework will likely mean that your students will have the opportunity to get more sleep, which means they’ll be more awake and engaged in class the next day.

3. Free time makes them well-rounded

Many students, especially high schoolers, associate school with a room they’re trapped in for a good portion of their lives, and they want nothing more than to be outside of that box. Obviously, students (and people in general) can use their free time unproductively, like spending hours at a time on social media and browsing the internet. But many students feel like their homework load prevents them from doing fun things that they like.

It’s important for students to have a life outside of school, and assigning less homework means that they have more time for such activities. Students should be well-rounded individuals; If they’re overloaded with homework, they won’t be able to develop in other areas. As a teacher, because you are so involved with it, it’s easy to just subconsciously act as if students have the same degree of interest in school. The reality is that students desperately want a life outside of school, and you’ll be a more successful teacher if you encourage them to develop that in healthy ways.

4. A balanced workload supports mindfulness   

Students generally complain about homework because they are overworked. Overall, I believe many students are okay with homework, and reviewing and practicing what they learn in school. But because each teacher thinks their class is most important, students often end up with several hours of homework a night. That said, it’s important that you and your colleagues are in conversation about what assignments you all are giving each week. You don’t want your students to end up with 4–5 hours a day of homework.

I know when I was in college, I really disliked the homework load for some classes because there was just too much. I was a good student and always did everything I was assigned, but when I had to read forty 8.5 x 11 pages between a Tuesday and a Thursday for just one class, I was incredibly overwhelmed. It was just so much information to cram into such a short time — naturally, I really could not absorb it all. You never want to put your students in a position where they are floundering because of their workload. If you lessen the load just a bit, you’ll have less tired and more mindful, alert students.

5. Family time is valuable to wellbeing

This last point is often forgotten. Students should have the opportunity to hang out with their families in the evenings. With many couples now both working full-time, students often end up seeing their teachers more than they see their parents! While we can’t go back to the days on the farm where families worked together and saw each other all the time, teachers can at least encourage their students to spend some extra time with their families. And while high schoolers may not appreciate it now, they will appreciate it later.

If students did one less hour of homework and had one more hour of time with their families to play a game, watch movies, or just talk, it would contribute greatly not only to the health of the family but also to the wellbeing of the student. It also minimizes discipline issues as parents would be more involved in their children’s lives.

The verdict: Kids should have less homework

By assigning less homework, you’ll likely find that students will love learning, get more sleep, enjoy themselves more with outside activities, be less overworked, and have more time to spend with family.

If you want to give this a shot, you should think about practical ways that you can reduce your students’ homework load. For homework, I originally assigned five discussion questions that my students had to answer and three that they had to write short responses to. Later, I decided to change that to two discussion questions and two written-response questions. I found that the results were significantly better because the students were much more inclined to do the homework!

For you, maybe it’s reducing the number of questions like I did. Maybe it’s assigning fewer pages of reading. And maybe it just means being more diligent in class so you can cover more material. Whatever it is, know that giving less homework to your students will likely produce better results in class!

Homework has been a long-standing part of the education system. It helps reinforce what students learn in the classroom, encourages good study habits, and promotes a deeper understanding of subjects. Studies have shown that homework can improve students’ grades and skills. Here are some reasons why homework is important:

Many people believe that one of the positive effects of homework is that it encourages the discipline of practice. Here are some reasons why homework might be bad:

Homework prevents self discovery and having the time to learn new skills outside of the school system. This is one of the main disadvantages of homework.

Endless surveys have found that homework creates a negative attitude towards school, and homework has not been found to be linked to a higher level of academic success.

The positive effects of homework have not been backed up enough. While homework may help some students improve in specific subjects, if they have outside help there is no real proof that homework makes for improvements.

It can be a challenge to really enforce the completion of homework, and students can still get decent grades without doing their homework. Extra school time does not necessarily mean better grades — quality must always come before quantity.

Accurate practice when it comes to homework simply isn’t reliable. Homework could even cause opposite effects if misunderstood, especially since the reliance is placed on the student and their parents — one of the major reasons as to why homework is bad. Many students would rather cheat in class to avoid doing their homework at home, and children often just copy off of each other or from what they read on the internet.

5. Homework Assignments Are Overdone

The general agreement is that students should not be given more than 10 minutes a day per grade level. What this means is that a first grader should be given a maximum of 10 minutes of homework, while a second grader receives 20 minutes, etc. Many students are given a lot more homework than the recommended amount, however.

On average, college students spend as much as 3 hours per night on homework . By giving too much homework, it can increase stress levels and lead to burn out. This in turn provides an opposite effect when it comes to academic success.

School should give us less homework because there are many students who get really stressed out because of school homework. Our teachers tell us to do this and that, and we are expected to sit down and do school homework for around 5 hours. We are so busy with other stuff like sports, helping out in the house, extracurricular activities that we become stressed out when our school homework is not done. When you ask a student, “Have you done your school homework?”, they will tell you that they have not. 

I have seen things like this in my school. My school is a really big school, so more and more people will go through what I have said. It is the school’s responsibility to teach students in the most fun, creative and easy way possible. I have seen it on TV. I have seen it in conventions, in the library and in magazines. Teachers are allowed to be creative and make lessons that keep students interested, such as making lesson plans on interesting topics.

Another reason why school should give us less homework is because some people are not as smart or fast as others when they take their time to study, so they stay up at night to do their homework. Studies like math, history and English are often studies that get people remembering things which can be called boring. There is a saying that people say, “Your time is precious, don’t waste it.” Going to other places than school can also be educational and some school board members don't get that. If they give us a lot of homework we might not be able to do it because of the stress and if we do not do our homehomework, we feel bad. It is our responsibility to do good at school. Without giving us a lot of homework at school, we feel like we have less stuff to worry about and then complete our homework.

If school was like this all the time, everyone would be happy and healthy. There would be great test results. If you think about it, school is meant to help everyone in school. However, sometimes some students do not get the help they need to feel good and be content. Something else that I believe school should give us less homework is because the homework we get is not consistent. Some teachers are so hard on their students, and others are not. It is all because of the teacher. We should have the same amount of homework as each other because we are all students, which means that we all go to school to learn and do the same thing. I do not think that the districts that I have said have the same amount of homework, and I think it is very unfair.

I do not think that the teachers realize that students have stressful lives and that students have things to do other than school homework. As a matter of fact, students are not the only ones that have stressful lives. Some students have problems within themselves, and those students can feel very sad. That's why I think we should get less homework.

The last reason why homework can create home problems is that economically disadvantaged students may not have enough materials to get the assigned homework done. This will resolve in the child getting lousy grades, just because the student isn’t in a wealthy family. For all of these reasons, schools should abolish homework because it causes home problems.

Another reason why schools put an end to homework is that it can create school issues. To start off, a valid reason why homework can cause school problems is that too much of it can diminish its effectiveness and students’ interest in learning, as said in “The Case For and Against Homework.” This proves that it can cause school issues because the kids stay up all night finishing homework, which may not help at all. According to “The Case For and Against Homework,” it states, “Many parents report that they feel unprepared to help children with homework and that their efforts to help frequently cause stress.” This shows how homework can lead to school problems because of students being too stressed and unprepared to do well in class. In the article “The Case For and Against Homework,” it mentions how inappropriate homework can provide no benefit and may even decrease student achievement. Because of this, homework can cause school problems by decreasing students’ school achievement. For all of these examples, schools should abolish homework because it can create school dilemmas. 

A final valid reason why school should abolish homework is how homework can be the cause of health obstacles. In the article “The Case For and Against Homework,” it states, “Homework could be detrimental to students’ mental health.” This means that homework could cause brain problems for children. Therefore, homework causes health issues. Another valid example of homework causing health problems is that it can cause lessened family time and can harm health. Students may spend more time working on homework than spending quality time with their family. To add on, less family time can create a smaller bond between the student and family. To wrap it up, too much homework can cause sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation can lead to paranoia, yawning, a weakened immunity, and more, as mentioned in “16 Effects of Sleep Deprivation.” This proves how homework can cause health problems. Because of the previous reasons, schools should abolish homework because it can cause health issues.

As you can see, schools should put an end to homework because of the home, school, and health issues that it can create. It is essential that we abolish homework to make life better for kids around the world. The previous evidence in the essay shows how removing homework can improve the quality of life. People who think that homework is healthy for kids might say how homework can extend learning beyond the school day. During the past school year, I have struggled with mental health due to excessive amounts of homework. Although I am grateful for my education and my experience at Collegiate, it is difficult to balance school work, sports, a social life, and college preparation. I know some students struggle more than others with school-life balance, but I am not the only one whose mental health is affected by excessive amounts of school work. 

In 2021, Tyler Brand (‘23) wrote a Match opinion piece, “ Why should students have less homework ?” He wrote about the history of homework and the negative impact it has on teens. He included teacher and student opinions about excessive homework, and many students expressed their desire for less homework. His article highlights that some teachers agree that students should have less homework, and some students strongly feel that they should be assigned less work for the sake of their mental health and stress levels. 

Similarly, I believe students should be assigned less homework to improve their mental health and stress levels. I understand that homework is assigned in order for students to learn the skill of completing work individually, which is why I don’t believe homework should be taken away completely. Homework is beneficial because it teaches students about time management and working independently, which is a crucial life skill. However, I think that students need a break from homework from time to time in order to clear their heads or deal with other things that may be going on in their lives.

One possible solution to this is the idea that students shouldn’t be assigned homework on the weekends so that students truly get a break from school and the stress that comes with it. An alternative would be only having homework due Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so that students have a greater amount of time to manage their workload. 

Cherry Hill High School West (New Jersey) junior Jessica Amble, in an article last year on her school news site titled “ How Homework is Destroying Teens’ Mental Health ,” agreed, writing that according to a study by Stanford University , “Students in high-achieving communities who spend too much time on homework experience more stress, physical health problems, a lack of balance and even alienation from society.” 

Amble questions whether or not it makes sense to continue assigning homework if many studies have shown that it has harmful effects on students. She says, “According to The Washington Post , the estimated number of teenagers suffering from at least one mental illness is 1 in 5.” There are many different factors that can contribute to mental illness, but one of the leading factors is school and the work and pressure that comes with it. 

In 2021, USA Today’s Sara Moniuszko wrote an article related to homework affecting mental health in teens titled “ Is it time to get rid of homework ?” She writes about how homework “ takes away time from friends, family,  and extracurricular activities; which are all very important things for a person’s mental and emotional health.” In order to maintain satisfactory mental health, teens require time to do the things they enjoy, and homework often impedes their ability to do so. 

Cynthia Catchings, a licensed clinical social worker and therapist at Talkspace , worked with students abroad, in France, whe re the students had a no-homework policy. She says, “Not having homework was something that I always admired from the French students (and) the French schools, because that was helping the students to really have the time off and really disconnect from school.”

Similarly, Sydney Trebus, then a senior at Boulder High School in Colorado, wrote in 2019, “ Is Excessive Homework the Cause of Many Teen Issues ?” She said, “ homework over a certain time limit can cause stress, depression, anxiety, lack of sleep, and more.” This contributes to the idea that homework can cause a variety of problems in teens and their mental health.

Trebus mentions another study done by Stanford, which shows, “56 percent of students considered homework a primary source of stress, 43 percent viewed tests as a primary stressor, while less than one percent of the students said homework was not a stressor.” Although homework may be beneficial towards students’ education, Trebus explained that it is, “detrimental to their attitude towards school, their grades, their self-confidence, their social skills, and their quality of life.” 

Since homework is a primary stressor for students, Trebus says, “ if schools keep making homework more prominent in the learning system, students will lose their passion for learning.” I think school is something that students should be passionate and excited about, but the immense amounts of work that comes with it makes it significantly less enjoyable. Sydney says, “the more time taken away from the emotional and physical health of a student, the more resentful they will be towards school.”

I find it fascinating that there are multiple students that have expressed their opinions about excessive stress due to homework, but there haven’t been many changes made to solve the problem. Students and mental health professionals agree about how homework largely affects teens’ mental health.

Collegiate students agree. Abby Rosenstock (’24), says, “I am constantly stressed out during the week and usually during the weekends too.” She also says, “It feels like I can never catch a break.” I agree with Rosenstock, which is why I propose that students deserve no homework days to relax and focus on their mental health.

Meredith Lanning (’24), says, “It would be nice if students had time to relax a little bit and get more sleep every once in a while.” She also says, “if we had less homework, we could get more sleep and maybe have a little bit of time to relax.” I agree; students currently aren’t getting enough sleep and have little to no time to relax. By the time students finish sports, showering, dinner, and homework, it is late and time to go to bed. 

Upper School English teacher and Match advisor Vlastik Svab says, “ I have definitely seen student stress levels rise, in general, in my 20 years teaching in high schools. I think schools like Collegiate ask a great deal of our students, and many are overwhelmed with all of their commitments. Homework can have value, but we as teachers should always be evaluating whether what we’re asking students to do has real educational value. I have found myself assigning less homework over time and having students write more in class, as that gives me the opportunity to workshop their writing with them in person.” 

I thoroughly agree with Svab’s response; I am also one of his students this semester, and I have appreciated the amount of class time he gives us to complete assignments. It definitely helps lighten the homework load and lower my stress levels. 

I hope more teachers recognize the importance of mental health and the excessive stress homework is causing on teens. I hope one day teachers start listening to students’ concerns and act on it. I hope one day students won’t see school and homework as a stressor, but instead as an exciting opportunity to learn new things.

Should We Get Rid of Homework?

Do you like doing homework? Do you think it has benefited you educationally?

Has homework ever helped you practice a difficult skill — in math, for example — until you mastered it? Has it helped you learn new concepts in history or science? Has it helped to teach you life skills, such as independence and responsibility? Or, have you had a more negative experience with homework? Does it stress you out, numb your brain from busywork or actually make you fall behind in your classes?

Should we get rid of homework?

In “ The Movement to End Homework Is Wrong, ” published in July, the Times Opinion writer Jay Caspian Kang argues that homework may be imperfect, but it still serves an important purpose in school. The essay begins:

Do students really need to do their homework? As a parent and a former teacher, I have been pondering this question for quite a long time. The teacher side of me can acknowledge that there were assignments I gave out to my students that probably had little to no academic value. But I also imagine that some of my students never would have done their basic reading if they hadn’t been trained to complete expected assignments, which would have made the task of teaching an English class nearly impossible. As a parent, I would rather my daughter not get stuck doing the sort of pointless homework I would occasionally assign, but I also think there’s a lot of value in saying, “Hey, a lot of work you’re going to end up doing in your life is pointless, so why not just get used to it?” I certainly am not the only person wondering about the value of homework. Recently, the sociologist Jessica McCrory Calarco and the mathematics education scholars Ilana Horn and Grace Chen published a paper, “ You Need to Be More Responsible: The Myth of Meritocracy and Teachers’ Accounts of Homework Inequalities .” They argued that while there’s some evidence that homework might help students learn, it also exacerbates inequalities and reinforces what they call the “meritocratic” narrative that says kids who do well in school do so because of “individual competence, effort and responsibility.” The authors believe this meritocratic narrative is a myth and that homework — math homework in particular — further entrenches the myth in the minds of teachers and their students. Calarco, Horn and Chen write, “Research has highlighted inequalities in students’ homework production and linked those inequalities to differences in students’ home lives and in the support students’ families can provide.”

Mr. Kang argues:

But there’s a defense of homework that doesn’t really have much to do with class mobility, equality or any sense of reinforcing the notion of meritocracy. It’s one that became quite clear to me when I was a teacher: Kids need to learn how to practice things. Homework, in many cases, is the only ritualized thing they have to do every day. Even if we could perfectly equalize opportunity in school and empower all students not to be encumbered by the weight of their socioeconomic status or ethnicity, I’m not sure what good it would do if the kids didn’t know how to do something relentlessly, over and over again, until they perfected it. Most teachers know that type of progress is very difficult to achieve inside the classroom, regardless of a student’s background, which is why, I imagine, Calarco, Horn and Chen found that most teachers weren’t thinking in a structural inequalities frame. Holistic ideas of education, in which learning is emphasized and students can explore concepts and ideas, are largely for the types of kids who don’t need to worry about class mobility. A defense of rote practice through homework might seem revanchist at this moment, but if we truly believe that schools should teach children lessons that fall outside the meritocracy, I can’t think of one that matters more than the simple satisfaction of mastering something that you were once bad at. That takes homework and the acknowledgment that sometimes a student can get a question wrong and, with proper instruction, eventually get it right.

From dioramas to book reports, from algebraic word problems to research projects, whether students should be given homework, as well as the type and amount of homework, has been debated for over a century. [ 1 ]

While we are unsure who invented homework, we do know that the word “homework” dates back to ancient Rome. Pliny the Younger asked his followers to practice their speeches at home. Memorization exercises as homework continued through the Middle Ages and Enlightenment by monks and other scholars. [ 45 ]

In the 19th century, German students of the Volksschulen or “People’s Schools” were given assignments to complete outside of the school day. This concept of homework quickly spread across Europe and was brought to the United States by Horace Mann , who encountered the idea in Prussia. [ 45 ]

In the early 1900s, progressive education theorists, championed by the magazine Ladies’ Home Journal , decried homework’s negative impact on children’s physical and mental health, leading California to ban homework for students under 15 from 1901 until 1917. In the 1930s, homework was portrayed as child labor, which was newly illegal, but the prevailing argument was that kids needed time to do household chores. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 45 ] [ 46 ]

Public opinion swayed again in favor of homework in the 1950s due to concerns about keeping up with the Soviet Union’s technological advances during the Cold War . And, in 1986, the US government included homework as an educational quality boosting tool. [ 3 ] [ 45 ]

A 2014 study found kindergarteners to fifth graders averaged 2.9 hours of homework per week, sixth to eighth graders 3.2 hours per teacher, and ninth to twelfth graders 3.5 hours per teacher. A 2014-2019 study found that teens spent about an hour a day on homework. [ 4 ] [ 44 ]

Beginning in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic complicated the very idea of homework as students were schooling remotely and many were doing all school work from home. Washington Post journalist Valerie Strauss asked, “Does homework work when kids are learning all day at home?” While students were mostly back in school buildings in fall 2021, the question remains of how effective homework is as an educational tool. [ 47 ]

Is Homework Beneficial?

Pro 1 Homework improves student achievement. Studies have shown that homework improved student achievement in terms of improved grades, test results, and the likelihood to attend college. Research published in the High School Journal indicated that students who spent between 31 and 90 minutes each day on homework “scored about 40 points higher on the SAT-Mathematics subtest than their peers, who reported spending no time on homework each day, on average.” [ 6 ] Students in classes that were assigned homework outperformed 69% of students who didn’t have homework on both standardized tests and grades. A majority of studies on homework’s impact – 64% in one meta-study and 72% in another – showed that take-home assignments were effective at improving academic achievement. [ 7 ] [ 8 ] Research by the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) concluded that increased homework led to better GPAs and higher probability of college attendance for high school boys.
