Marcus Low :

It leaves us with one less caregiver to be on assignment, and that leaves us short-staffed. Public health experts say testing delays present a major hurdle to reducing infections and tracking those who have been in close contact with a person who is positive for the virus. Thats why researchers are working to develop rapid tests that can be cheaply produced, self-administered and provide immediate, reliable results. For now, most tests to diagnose COVID-19 require laboratory processing, which means a built-in delay. Guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that states, as they lift final virus restrictions, have a turnaround time of less than two days. But its unclear whether states have access to detailed data showing whether they are meeting the CDC standard, including how long it takes to process tests at independent labs. Labs track their own turnaround times, but the CDC said data such as how long it takes for a test to get to a lab and for a provider to receive the result and notify the patient are not tracked. That makes it difficult to determine a meaningful average of what patients are experiencing in each state. In the absence of publicly available federal data, the AP earlier this month surveyed nine states that were experiencing a 14-day uptick in new positive cases, plus New York, which has had the most COVID-19 cases. The state lab in New York was taking up to three days to report results to patients. California officials said the statewide turnaround time was 48 to 72 hours, depending on the lab. In Utah, anecdotal information suggested that results took 24 to 72 hours. Most of the 10 states surveyed said they did not have data on turnaround times for commercial labs in their state, creating another information gap. Health experts said this was not unusual, that state health departments have not typically been responsible for tracking individual laboratory turnaround times. Its a good question of who should be responsible for tracking this information and providing it back to the public, said Kelly Wroblewski, director of infectious diseases with the Association of Public Health Laboratories. There are other factors that can cause delays, from the time of day the test is taken to whether a lab shuts down for the evening. Staffing issues and shortages of testing supplies also can slow the process. Even people visiting the same testing location can have widely different experiences. Earlier this month, Jeff Barnes, a music therapist in metro Atlanta, went to the same drive-thru testing location a week after his wife and two daughters. They were still waiting when he received his results the next day. Theirs wouldnt come for seven days. Barnes said he was concerned what a similar delay would mean if schools reopen in the fall. They are going to have to make it more efficient, Barnes said. If I knew (my daughter) was in a classroom with 20 kids and 10 of them had results pending, I dont know that I would send her. Until rapid tests are widely available, health experts say it will continue to take a day or two to get results under the best circumstances. That creates more opportunities for people who might be infected but feel fine to pass the virus along to others. In late April and May, the state lab in Alabama had trouble acquiring reagents, the chemical substances used to process tests. That led to intermittent delays in reporting results, up to five days from when the lab received the specimen, according to Dr. Karen Landers, assistant state health officer with the Alabama Department of Public Health. Those problems have since been resolved, and the lab now has a turnaround time between 24 and 72 hours from the time it receives samples. One of the largest commercial laboratories, Quest Diagnostics, recently reported its average turnaround time as one day for priority patients and two to three days for all other populations. The company said it expects increased demand to result in longer waits of more than thee days. Other countries face similar challenges. Wait times in China vary by city, from as little as one day in Shanghai to four days in Wuhan, where the virus first emerged. In Japan, tests usually yield results within two days. Mandatory tests, such as those at airports, often come out sooner, according to the health ministry. Results in India initially took around 24 hours. But as infections and testing increased, so did delays. Now results often take two to three days or as long as a week, depending on location. The nearly two-week wait in South Africa makes effective treatment nearly impossible.

BY JASON RANTZ

The Jason Rantz Show, 3pm-7pm on KTTH

Students in a Seattle English class were told that their love of reading and writing is a characteristic of “white supremacy,” in the latest Seattle Public Schools high school controversy. The lesson plan has one local father speaking out, calling it “educational malpractice.”

As part of the Black Lives Matter at School Week, World Literature and Composition students at Lincoln High School were given a handout with definitions of the “9 characteristics of white supremacy,” according to the father of a student. Given the subject matter of the class, the father found it odd this particular lesson was brought up.

The Seattle high schoolers were told that “Worship of the Written Word” is white supremacy because it is “an erasure of the wide range of ways we communicate with each other.” By this definition, the very subject of World Literature and Composition is racist. It also chides the idea that we hyper-value written communication because it’s a form of “honoring only what is written and even then only what is written to a narrow standard, full of misinformation and lies.” The worksheet does not provide any context for what it actually means.

“I feel bad for any students who actually internalize stuff like this as it is setting them up for failure,” the father explained to the Jason Rantz Show on KTTH.

Everything is ‘white supremacy’ at Seattle Public Schools

The father asked to remain anonymous for fear of retribution against his child by Seattle Public Schools. He said the other pieces of the worksheet were equally disturbing.

The worksheet labels “objectivity,” “individualism,” and “perfectionism” as white supremacy. If students deny their own racism — or that any of the nine characteristics are legitimately racist — is also white supremacy. Denialism or being overly defensive is a racist example of an “entitlement to name what is an [sic] isn’t racism and that those with power have a right to be shielded from the stresses of antiracist work.”

The father argues the concepts are “incoherent and cannot stand any sort of reasoned analysis.” And he notes that it’s set up to ensure students accept every concept without ever questioning the claims.

“How is a 15-year-old kid supposed to object in class when ‘denial and defensiveness’ is itself a characteristic of white supremacy? This is truly educational malpractice.”

White students told to apologize in yet another Seattle high school controversy

Another aspect of the white supremacy lesson at this Seattle school involved a video titled “Getting Called Out: How to Apologize” by Franchesca Ramsey. It’s reportedly presented in the context of white students expressing what the teacher views as “white supremacy.”

“Getting called out, in this context of this video, is when you say or do something that upholds the oppression of a marginalized group of people,” Ramsey says.

Ramsey says her advice is about becoming an ally and “doing the right thing.” She explains you shouldn’t “get defensive” by denying you’re oppressing marginalized people, even if you’re not actually oppressing marginalized people.

“What you really need to do is listen because this is where the other person is hopefully going to explain to you what you did wrong and how you can explain it,” she says.

In the context of the worksheet on white supremacy, it seems clear that students must merely accept that they are upholding oppression. Using the worksheet, if a student defends independence or a love of reading and writing, that student is supposed to accept that it’s white supremacist thinking and stop acting independently or loving to read and write.

Father says Seattle Public Schools isn’t serving students

The father says he taught his son to be on the lookout for this kind of Radical Left indoctrination. It’s why his son flagged the worksheets to him. But he notes that the curriculum doesn’t exactly help his kid on the subject he’s supposed to be learning.

“My problem with this curriculum is that this is supposed to be a writing and literature class and lessons like these do nothing to help my kid become a better writer,” the father explained. “I’m sure Lincoln administration will point to the high ELA proficiency scores but the high proportion of HCC [highly capable] kids (40% of the student body) is a big factor. With so many smart, hard working kids (white supremacists) it’s easy to support these luxury beliefs but system-wide only 63% of kids are proficient in English. Is this really the best use of class time? ”

The father also wonders how many students will fall for this toxic thinking across Seattle schools where concepts around white supremacy are so clearly partisan.

“I feel bad for any students who actually internalize stuff like this as it is setting them up for failure,” he said.

Seattle Public Schools spokespeople provided their normal response to requests for comment: none.

what is synonym of assignment

‘How do white supremacy characteristics show up in your personal lives?’ was a question in a worksheet given to Lincoln High students.

Brewers trade Clayton Andrews to Yankees; still no word on possible signing of Gary Sánchez

what is synonym of assignment

PHOENIX – The Milwaukee Brewers completed a transaction on Wednesday afternoon as players continued to trickle into Maryvale.

But much to the angst of the team's fans, it wasn't the addition of free-agent catcher Gary Sánchez .

Instead, the Brewers were able to find a taker for left-hander Clayton Andrews, who had been designated for assignment last week in the wake of the signing of right-hander Jakob Junis . Andrews was traded to the New York Yankees in exchange for right-hander Joshua Quezada.

Quezada, 19, went 6-0 with a 3.69 ERA, WHIP of 1.17 and 48 strikeouts in 46 ⅓ innings (11 appearances, four starts) last season in the Dominican Summer League after he was signed as an international free agent in January 2023.

The 27-year-old Andrews, meanwhile, was a 17th-round draft choice of the Brewers in 2018. He broke in as a two-way player but eventually settled into just pitching and made his major-league debut on July 1 of last season.

He made four appearances in separate stints with the team and the result was not good: a 27.00 ERA, WHIP of 3.00 and three home runs allowed over 3 ⅓ innings.

Where does the Brewers' possible Gary Sánchez addition stand?

As of Wednesday morning, there had been no discernible move toward an agreement between the 31-year-old and the Brewers.

The team had no comment on the situation, which has now reached the week mark since reports emerged that the two sides had come together on a one-year deal worth $7 million with an option year.

The fit between the Brewers and Sánchez would appear to be a good one, with Milwaukee seeking to both lengthen its lineup with another potential power threat and bolster its catching situation behind starter William Contreras while Sánchez is seeking to build off his 19-homer resurgence in 72 games with the San Diego Padres in 2023.

Sánchez did have his season end prematurely (early September) by a fractured right wrist suffered when he was hit by a pitch, but there's been no indication that's been the reason for the holdup.

New manager Pat Murphy takes 'the big chair' for Brewers spring training

While he officially took over as Brewers manager in mid-November, Wednesday marked the first time Pat Murphy found himself sitting in the office and at the desk of former charge and Milwaukee skipper Craig Counsell, addressing a small group of reporters.

Murphy was asked if he felt any differently now that he was finally sitting in "the big chair."

"I feel like I've been in the chair since November, whatever the day was," he said. "Those eight years (as bench coach) were virtually the only eight years of my life I've ever been an assistant. So, I'm really thankful.

"On my daily list of mantras, it's not about me, you know? I want to live that. And so it doesn't come up. I've got a job to do, responsibility. It's not like I've reached the pinnacle. I've had so much good fortune. I've had plenty of injustice, but I've had plenty of good fortune.

"I'm not even thinking in those terms (of being the head man). I don't need that."

On the day pitchers and catchers reported, the vast majority of position players had also arrived with Christian Yelich and new acquisition Joey Ortiz the only notables who weren't spotted.

The first full-squad workout doesn't take place until Tuesday.
