French F1 driver Pierre Gasly signs multi-year contract extension with Alpine team

ENSTONE, England (AP) — Formula 1 driver Pierre Gasly has signed a multiyear contract extension with the Alpine team.

Alpine said in a statement Thursday the deal “will take Pierre into the 2025 season and beyond.” No further details were given.

The 28-year-old Frenchman is in his second season with Alpine. After a tough start to this campaign, he has scored points in the past three races heading into this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix.

He finished 11th in the drivers’ standings last season, with a best finish of third place at the Netherlands GP.

“It has always been the plan to build a long-term project with the team,” Gasly said. “While on track it’s been a challenging season so far, I remain faithful to the project and I am not going anywhere. I am happy with the changes made, the hard work, and the direction the team is taking.”

Gasly’s teammate Esteban Ocon is leaving Alpine at the end of the season. The French-owned team said it will announce “in due” course who will replace him.

Ocon and Gasly have made no secret of the fact they don’t have a great relationship. The pair collided approaching the tunnel section at the Monaco GP last month, with Ocon taking responsibility for the incident and receiving a five-place grid penalty for the following race.

In March, two executives in charge of designing Alpine’s new F1 car quit after a disappointing performance at the season-opening Bahrain GP.

Alpine is reportedly interesting in signing Carlos Sainz to replace Ocon after the Spaniard lost his seat with Ferrari with seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton leaving Mercedes to join the Italian team next year.

Gasly has entered 140 races and has four podium finishes, including victory at the Italian GP in 2020 , when he held off then-McLaren driver Sainz in the closing laps.

The aspiring chef who suddenly collapsed and died before taking off on a Qantas flight in Australia was at peace in her final moments, the “haunted” passenger seated next to her during the tragedy revealed.

Manpreet Kaur, the 24-year-old culinary student studying in Melbourne, was on the Qantas Airways plane bound for Delhi, India where she had planned to visit family she hadn’t seen in four years.

Ravinder Singh, who had been visiting family in Australia, boarded the plane after Kaur and first noticed her when he was taking his seat.

“I was sitting next to her on the Qantas flight from Melbourne to Delhi and was the last person to talk to her,” Singh told NewsAU .

“When I boarded the plane, she was already seated in the aisle. I was in the window, so I asked if she could please get up so I could occupy my seat,” the passenger added.

Manpreet Kaur, the 24-year-old culinary student studying in Melbourne, died on board a Qantas flight in Australia on June 20, 2024.

Singh saw Kaur, who was from northern India’s Dharampura, looking through pictures on her phone as they waited for the plane to begin rolling back from the gate.

“I noticed that she began scrolling through photos on her mobile phone and stopped at a photograph of an elderly couple,” Singh said. “I asked if they were her parents. She smiled and nodded and kept staring at it.”

When the plane began moving towards the runway, Singh said Kaur, who was buckled in the seat, had put her phone down and leaned forward resting her head on the seat in front of her.

“As the plane was preparing for takeoff, I wanted to alert her to sit upright,” he said.

Ravinder Singh was sitting next to Kaur on the plane during the medical emergency.

Before he could alert her, the plane “jerked” causing Kaur’s head to move towards Singh, and the retired army officer realized something was wrong and alerted the flight crew.

Singh told a flight attendant that Kaur “did not seem very well” while the crew checked the woman’s pulse before they attempted to “revive” her.

“The reaction of the cabin crew was very commendable,” he said, recalling that a medical crew rushed Kaur off the plane.

Singh remains haunted by the tragic event weeks later but wants to ensure Kaur’s parents that she “left the world peacefully.”

Never miss a story.

“The incident has been etched in my memory for life,” he told the outlet. “It is very difficult to digest that a young girl with whom you were just interacting with has passed away in front of your eyes.

“Her innocent face stills haunts me and I want her parents to know she loved them a lot. She left this world peacefully looking at their photograph, Singh added. “My heart breaks for her family who would have been looking forward to seeing her after a long time.”

A post-mortem test revealed Kaur had died from tuberculosis, an infectious disease that mostly affects the lungs, according to a report.

Kaur’s cousin and roommate revealed that the aspiring chef had unknowingly been battling the bacteria-causing respiratory illness for a few months and her health had deteriorated in her final days.

“She had difficulty talking and during that last week she had no energy to do anything and was just lying in bed,” Kuldeep Kaur told the Daily Mail.

Singh told a flight attendant that Kaur "did not seem very well" while the crew checked the woman's pulse before they attempted to "revive" her.

Kaur’s body can not leave Australia because she died from tuberculosis, forcing her parents to apply for visas so they can fly to the country and attend their daughter’s funeral.

A GoFundMe was created to help Kaur’s family following her death.

“Our dear friend Manpreet left us too soon, leaving a void in our lives that can never be filled. As we grieve her passing, we want to come together to honor her memory and support her family in their time of need,” the fundraiser reads.

A post-mortem test revealed Kaur had died from tuberculosis, an infectious disease that mostly affects the lungs, according to a report.

Victoria’s Department of Health said it had begun limited contact tracing the following day, and anyone identified as a potential risk would be notified.

2024 NBA draft features another French revolution with four players on first-round board

Zaccharie risacher and alexandre sarr could make history by becoming the first frenchmen to go 1-2 in the nba draft. but they're not the only players from france available..

french homework year 7

The Tony Parker impact is real. Include Boris Diaw, Nic Batum and Rudy Gobert, too.

A generation of French athletes grew up watching Parker, Diaw, Batum and Gobert and were inspired to play basketball.

In Wednesday’s NBA draft, four French players could be drafted in the first round, including the first two picks. Zaccharie Risacher and Alexandre Sarr are projected top-five picks and are Nos. 1-2 in USA TODAY’s mock draft. Tidjane Salaun is a possible lottery pick, and Pacome Dadiet is a potential late first-round pick. Two more French players (Melvin Ajinca, Armel Traore) are potential second-round picks Thursday.

"About 30% of our players are international," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said at the start of the Finals . "When you think about the amount of basketball being played globally and the U.S. is a little less than 5% of the global population, that number of international players will only rise. Statistically, you’re going to see more top-notch international players in the league."

If Risacher and Sarr go 1-2, it will mark the first time the first two picks of the draft are French players, and if either goes first, it will be the first time that two French players were selected No. 1 in consecutive drafts.

San Antonio Spurs rookie of the year Victor Wembanyama was No. 1 in 2023, and he’s headed for annual MVP contention based on his initial season.

France’s Nolan Traore, Armel's younger brother, is a potential lottery pick in the 2025 draft.

“Outside of the U.S. and Canada, France has delivered more players into the NBA than any other place around the world,” NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum told USA TODAY earlier this year.

France is the epicenter of basketball with the draft, Wembanyama and the Paris Olympics on July 26-Aug. 11 where France is a medal contender in men’s and women’s basketball.

In 2024-25, the Spurs will play the Indiana Pacers twice in Paris (Jan. 23 and Jan. 25), marking the first time the NBA plays two regular-season games in Paris in the same season.

“I have to give a lot of credit to the French Basketball Federation as well as the local leagues there,” Tatum said. “They do an incredible job there of developing talent and developing players. There's a passion for the game of basketball there.”

In this year’s draft, the French players are athletic wings or bigs with length.

Zaccharie Risacher, forward, 6-foot-9, 215 pounds, 19 years old

Pro basketball’s family affair is worldwide. Risacher’s dad, Stephane, was a member of France’s silver medal team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Born in Spain where his dad played professionally, Risacher has played for JL Bourg in France’s top pro league. In 2023-24, he averaged 10.1 points and shot 43.9% from the field and 35.2% on 3-pointers in 32 Pro A games and was the winner of the French League Best Young Player Award and EuroCup Rising Star.

Alexandre Sarr, forward, 7-0, 224, 19

Born in France, Sarr played youth basketball in Spain, spent two seasons with Overtime Elite in the U.S. and played professionally for the Perth Wildcats in Australia in 2023-24. He averaged 9.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks and shot 71% from the field for Perth. His brother, Olivier, spent time with the Oklahoma City Thunder last season, and his Senegalese father, Massar, played professional basketball.

Tidjane Salaun, forward, 6-9, 207, 18

Salaun spent 2023-24 with Cholet Basket where he averaged 9.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 33 Pro A games in France and increased his scoring as the season progressed. He was named 2023-24 Basketball Champions League Best Young Player.

Pacome Dadiet, forward, 6-7, 187, 18

Dadiet has moved up draft boards late in the process, but he has been on the NBA radar, participating in the league’s Basketball Without Borders camps in 2022 and 2023 (All-Star Weekend in Salt Lake City). Playing for Ratiopharm Ulm in Germany’s pro league, Dadiet averaged 6.8 points and shot 52.7% from the field and 39.7% on 3s in 32 games.
