When someone asks, “How can I improve my handwriting?” they usually look for a few things they can easily implement to make their writing look more legible or presentable.

The problem is that handwriting is a habit deeply ingrained in both the mind and the muscles, so even a tiny change can be difficult to implement.

I’ve always taken a different approach to helping people with their handwriting, one that might require a little more time and commitment but gives the writer all the tools they need to take their handwriting as far as they like.

The approach is to first understand how handwriting works on a basic level, then apply that understanding to improve your own handwriting.

Sample of beautiful handwriting.

Understanding the Fundamentals of Handwriting

If you don’t understand how handwriting works fundamentally, you will always feel lost when trying to improve your handwriting, even if you are following the advice of a handwriting expert.

When you understand how handwriting works, everything becomes clear. You will know things like:

  • Why the letters have different heights
  • Why the letters are spaced the way they are
  • Why the letters have different forms yet work together to create a cohesive script
  • The way to position your body, hold the pen, and position the paper for optimal writing
  • Why someone’s handwriting is more legible or visually pleasing than another’s

I hope you can see that if you understand all the above, improving your handwriting will be a walk in the park.

So your first task, if you want to improve your handwriting, is to learn the fundamentals of handwriting.

The best way to do this is to study a proven handwriting system.

Any time-tested system will do. I recommend American Cursive because it is a beautiful, legible script.

I also have a  free course that will teach you everything you need to know  about American Cursive.

before and after image example of improved handwriting.

Regardless of what script you choose, by studying one, you will learn how handwriting works, and you will be able to apply what you’ve learned to any other script, including your own chicken scratch.

By studying a script like American Cursive, you will learn these important concepts and more:

  • Body position ,  pen grip , and  paper position
  • The grid , or how the lines printed on the page (and the imaginary ones that aren’t) work with the letters
  • How to write across the page
  • How a script builds on  fundamental strokes  and repeats those strokes throughout the alphabet

If you want a taste of how important the fundamentals are, I suggest you watch the video below titled “The Cursive Grid,” which is from my  free online cursive course .

What Do You Want Your Handwriting to Look Like?

When you study American Cursive or any other script, you will learn to write in that style, but that doesn’t mean your personal handwriting needs to look exactly like the script you are studying.

That said, traditional scripts like American Cursive were successful for a reason.

They evolved out of the culture in which they were created and have stood the test of time as legible, visually pleasing scripts.

You cannot go wrong by trying to emulate a traditional script, and no matter how hard you try, your script will always have personal quirks that are unique to you.

The great thing about studying a traditional script is that you have a very clear and defined vision to work towards.

Every traditional script has an exemplar, which is the ideal letterforms that comprise the script.

With an exemplar in hand, you know exactly what your goal is, and you can always compare your handwriting to the exemplar to see where you are falling short.

Exemplar of American Cursive Lowercase Letters

If you want your handwriting to have its own unique flavor, I suggest you at least find a traditional script to use as a base.

That way, you can take the exemplar from a traditional script and modify it to make it your own, which is much easier than creating an exemplar from scratch.

Of course, you can create one from scratch too, but it takes a lot of time to do it right, and the result won’t be as good unless you understand handwriting at a high level.

Let’s be clear, you need an exemplar. Without an image of the ideal letters, you will wander aimlessly and waste a lot of time while making little improvement.

Whether you are studying from the exemplar of a traditional script or your own unique creation, you will be armed with everything you need to improve your handwriting.

Cursive handwriting example.

You’ve Done the Work, Now Apply It

I know, I know.

You’ve already done a lot of work.

Learning the fundamentals of handwriting is no small task and creating your own exemplar takes time too.

The good news is that your handwriting will already look much better by this point.

That’s because your understanding of handwriting is naturally solving the problems with your handwriting without you having to do anything except pay attention while you write.

Of course, there are more active things you can do to improve your handwriting at this stage.

When you understand the fundamentals, improving your handwriting is a straightforward process –

  • identify errors,
  • and figure out why you are making the errors.

If you can see an error in your writing and then understand exactly why you are making that error, resolving the error is pretty easy.

Here’s an example.

As you can see, our friend’s handwriting here is very cramped in the horizontal direction.

Fixing this is pretty easy because he’s done the work and understands the basics of handwriting.

Our friend was able to fix this problem because he understands that spacing is controlled by the movement of the hand and that movement is limited by the hand’s range of motion.

He is trying to write too many letters without picking up his hand and moving it to the right.

The problem was easily solved by pausing more often to move the hand and continue writing with proper spacing.

This is just one example of how improving your handwriting works when you have an understanding of the fundamentals.

You have all the tools to identify, analyze, and resolve issues with your handwriting.

How much you want to improve your handwriting is up to you.

Handwriting example.

As you improve your handwriting, the errors in your writing will become less noticeable to the average person.

However, you will see more and more errors in your writing.

This is because when you are studying handwriting, you are training your eye to see errors, which allows you to see the more subtle errors that previously escaped your eye.

The only way to end this process is to become satisfied with your handwriting or keep working on it for the rest of your life.

Should you become satisfied with your handwriting, writing regularly will maintain it.

Quick recap + final words on improving your handwriting

There you have it, friends.

If you’re genuinely looking to improve your handwriting, this is the best approach you can take.

Little tips and tricks may marginally improve the look of your handwriting.

However, learning the fundamentals will allow you to take your handwriting to a new level.

Here is a quick recap of the whole article –

  • Understand the basics of handwriting
  • Pick and study a proven handwriting system, e.g., American Cursive
  • Always practice using an existing exemplar
  • It’s easier to use an existing exemplar than to create one from scratch
  • You’ll be able to apply the knowledge to other writing styles as well (even create your own)
  • Once you understand the fundamentals, you’ll be able to correct your mistakes
  • The improvement of your handwriting will depend on how much time and effort you put into it

Once again, be sure to check out my free online course that will teach you everything you need to know about American Cursive.

Madreen Karle is a master first grade reading teacher with over 30 years of classroom experience. She taught reading in a special needs and English as a Second Language classroom. After retiring she wrote a reading program to help others learn how to teach reading. She is a trusted educator and author of  5 books to help teach children  to read and write. In addition to her books, she is a mentor for 3 websites that give reading teacher tips ( Mrs. Karle’s Sight and Sound Reading ,  Mrs. Karle’s Reading Patch , and  Mrs. Karle’s Handwriting Patch ). Through her teaching she learned that confidence was the key to learning to read. A child who is not confident at reading does not like to read and struggles to read. Mrs. Karle created “sunshine moments” to help teach children how to grow their confidence and learn to read. Meeghan Karle Mousaw (Madreen’s daughter) has her Master’s in Special Education. She has 8 years experience teaching children to read online. In addition, she developed a curriculum to teach children handwriting called  The Handwriting Patch . With the Handwriting Patch learning is fun because children learn to draw and learn handwriting at the same time. In 2019 The  Handwriting Patch curriculum became an amazon best seller  the first year it was released, helping thousands of kids learn handwriting with a unique, fun method. She is mom to 6 kids, each with differently learning abilities and struggles. The  Reading Patch  was established by the creators of  Mrs. Karle’s Sight and Sound Reading . Together they have been featured on the NBC media outlets and Parents Magazine online. Over the last 8 years in their online platform, Madreen and Meeghan have worked tirelessly with teachers, homeschoolers and parents looking to help children learn to read to become a trusted authority in teaching children to read and advocating early literacy skills. They often partner with other educational experts to deliver the most current information to the Reading Patch community.

Free Cursive Handwriting Worksheets - This Reading Mama

If you’ve followed me for very long, you know that I’m not a huge fan of worksheets or workbooks. I do, however, use them from time to time. And this is one of those times.

ALuv (going into 3rd grade) has been working on cursive handwriting and loving it. I checked out the order in which Handwriting Without Tears suggests to teach cursive and created some cursive handwriting worksheets for him to coincide with their developmental suggestions.

Today, I’m sharing them for FREE {download is at the end of this post}.

In this pack, you’ll find TWO levels of handwriting practic:

cursive handwriting worksheets level 1

LEVEL 2 looks like this and encourages independent writing

ALuv has been working through Level 2 and will continue to do so this summer. He has really enjoyed it so far and I’ve been impressed with how much he has retained and used.

I really love these handwriting packets! They are great for my kids because we begin cursive in kindergarten, so these words are totally on their level as we progress from letters to short easy words that they can actually read and spell. I’m just curious how you made these and whether you have any more? Is there any way I could make my own with the spelling words they are using?

April 22, 2015 at 9:20 pm

I’m so glad you can use them with your kids! You can find more handwriting resources in this post –> https://thisreadingmama.com/handwriting-notebooks/ I made them using a font from http://www.fonts4teachers.com and just did it in Power Point. Hope that helps.

For a couple of years, our family used the Prescripts series for penmanship and drawing practice. However, as one of our children progressed from Book 1:  Introduction to Cursive Writing & Tracing  to Book 2: Writing Cursive Words and Practicing Drawing Skills , we encountered quite a setback. There was such a huge leap from one book to the next that it was nearly impossible for him to work in the second book!

handwriting practice book free download

While he could write his cursive letters separately, he immensely struggled with connecting those letters into words. After attempting a few pages, I knew we’d have to go back and bridge the gap.  So… after conducting some research and testing it on multiple children, we recommend using this cursive handwriting workbook to use as a bridge between learning individual letters and connecting those letters into words. This method has not only helped our boys to successfully connect letters into simple words, but many other families have shared with us how helpful this resource has been! I thought I’d share it here in case anyone else ends up with the same situation.

After downloading the font, you will need to find the Fonts folder on your computer by doing a search using MAC Finder or Windows Explorer and then copying the font file (with extension .ttf) into that folder.  For those fonts which do not offer a dashed or dotted option, you can hollow the letters by formatting the font within the word-processing software (select the “outline” option).

Many children are able to write legibly in their handwriting books, but struggle to transfer their neat handwriting into other subjects.

At Morrells Handwriting, we know how important it is for children to use neat and legible handwriting in all of their work. Some children find it difficult to keep the height of their letters at an even size. Many of our customers tell us that they love the shaded lines in our handwriting workbooks, so we decided to create our very own handwriting paper and give it to you for free.

Our free handwriting practice paper is a welcome new addition to the Morrells resources.

Morrells narrow lined handwriting paper

We have created the handwriting practice paper to complement our handwriting workbooks for you to use at home or in school. The wide lined paper is perfect for Key Stage 1 to practise their handwriting on and uses the same size lines and shaded area used in our Letter Formation Workbooks 1 and 2 and our Joining Letters Workbooks 1 and 2.

The narrow lined practice paper is ideal for Key Stage 2 and above and uses the same shaded area used in our handwriting workbooks to show the height of the lower case letters. This practice paper is perfect to use with our Letter Formation Workbook 3 and Joining Letters Workbook 3.

Printable Beginners Handwriting Book

I’ve been wanting to make this beginners handwriting book for a while. Having finished the Prewriting Series, learning how to write the letters was the next logical step.

Teaching Handwriting to Preschoolers

I like to catch my kids at that age when coloring and drawing are second nature. Because when they are in create mode they are so eager to learn how to write words.

They want to be able  to write ‘to’ and ‘from’, write an ‘I love you’ note, or proudly scribble their name on the top of their Sunday school paper.

These are great teaching moments, and if they have the basic letter formation down you can really capitalize on those opportunities.

Beginners Handwriting Book Contents:

This printable handwriting book for kids is very straightforward and simple. For each letter there is a correct example of how to properly form the letter, a tracing opportunity, and then practice space. (Also, the learned letters are repeated throughout the book, so they are constantly being refreshed.)

This is a 64 page download that introduces beginning letter formation for letters A-Z (uppercase and lowercase). Through various activities and repetition, students will begin building the fine motor skills needed to establish a strong foundation for writing, as well as, be introduced to basic letter formation.

Other elements included in the book:

  • writing numbers 1-10
  • letter recognition
  • differentiation

Note: There is a full description plus lots of pictures on the product page .

How to Use the Beginners Printable Handwriting Book

Go over each page together. Teach them the proper strokes for the letter they are learning. If they need extra practice or a bigger writing space, have them use a white board or extra piece of paper to try it on as well. The emphasis is not on mastery, at this point, but of developing fine motor skills and basic letter formation,

Tips for handwriting success:

  • Consistency encourage proper pencil grip
  • Teach them to form the letters correctly (yes, this matters)
  • Keep the handwriting experience fun and light
  • Do short lessons

Assembly Instructions

Whether you’re using this as a preschool handwriting resource or a kindergarten writing activity, you can easily adapt it to your needs. Here are the two assembly options.

Option #1: PRINT AND GO!

Option #2: Print, laminate covers, have bound or put into a 3-ring binder.

I printed mine front to back, laminated the covers, then had them bound at our local print shop for a couple dollars. Having this resource in book form is ideal for us, because we plan on working through it on a daily basis.

Finally, this resource was made with my kids in mind, however, if you would like a copy for your homeschool or classroom, you can find the download link below.

My First Handwriting Book

More ways to practice handwriting for kids.

Once my kids can form the letters, then its practice, practice, practice.  I love the concept of doing copywork. This is basically copying down given words, sentences, or paragraphs for practice.

While it might sound like busy work, its not. It’s amazing handwriting practice and kids assimilate grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and vocabulary. It’s magical. My two older kids have done it and the benefits of doing copywork  have been very visible.

After the kids learn their letters, start by giving them short words to copy, then build from there.

  • Continuous motions of curves, loops, waves, and spirals. Shapes: circle, oval, ellipse, quatrefoil, and curved triangle.
  • Changing directions with straight lines, angles, and zigzags. Shapes: triangle, square, rhombus, parallelogram, trapezoid, pentagon, and hexagon.
  • Combining different forms and shapes from sections one and two to create letters or more complex shapes, such as hearts and stars, and finding shapes in nature.

This workbook includes 100 sheets, which is 3–4 sheets per week for a normal school year. Each sheet provides an opportunity for the child to color, improving both coloring and motor skills. The doodles, forms, and shapes the child practices are all connected to nature or other common objects in a child’s world.

  • Shapes & Strokes: provides a comprehensive review of the shapes and strokes learned in Doodles & Pre-writing for Littles: Part 1.
  • Letters: Familiarize children with letters and the kinds of strokes used for letters.
  • Trace & Try: allows children to trace shapes and strokes, then draw the same shape or stroke freehand.
  • Bonus Section—Find the Image: provides images hidden within a picture that children find and circle or color.

This workbook includes 115 sheets, which is 4–5 sheets per week for a normal school year. Each sheet provides an opportunity for the child to color, improving both coloring and motor skills. Handwriting Level 1 is for children in first grade and focuses on the correct print formation of letters and numbers. This course introduces 2–3 new letters at a time, going in the order of the most used letters, and introduces short words and sentences near the end. Text size is reduced halfway through the course as the child gains the motor skills for smaller print.

The text size in the course gets smaller as children gain experience with handwriting.

Handwriting Level 3 is for children in third grade. This course teaches cursive with a unique colored dot system developed by Jenny Phillips. The child follows the colored dots in the order of the rainbow, which makes it easy for children to correctly learn cursive with little to no help from parents. If children have no experience with cursive writing but are ready for it, they should start with this course.

Drawing activities are incorporated throughout the course to make handwriting more enjoyable. This workbook includes 100 sheets, which is 3–4 sheets per week for an average school year.

All the child has to do is follow the colored dots in order of the rainbow. This technique makes it easy for children to correctly learn cursive with little to no help from parents. About 15% of the course focuses on cementing correct print formation.

The images, artwork, and words used in this handwriting course are all designed to connect children to the good and the beautiful: family, faith, high moral character, and the wonders and beauty of nature and human life.

The course also exposes children to poetry, Bible verses, grammar rules, alphabetizing, and drawing.

Handwriting Workbook Level 4 (PDF)

Handwriting Level 4 focuses primarily on cementing correct cursive letter formation and on teaching how to write cursive words and sentences with a unique colored dot system developed by Jenny Phillips. This program makes it easy for children to correctly learn cursive with little to no help from parents. Level 4 also includes print letter formation as review.

This course is divided into three sections. Each section covers new  principles with plenty of practice.

Section 1 guides the child through the formation of each letter of the alphabet in cursive. The child begins to connect letters into words by following The Good and the Beautiful cursive color dot system. Section 2 teaches the child to write cursive words without color guides and prepares the child to write whole sentences in cursive without guides. Section 3 teaches the child to write entire sentences in cursive while reinforcing correct print formation.

The course also includes fun, inspiring, and beautiful drawing projects throughout. The images, artwork, and words used in this handwriting course are all designed to connect children to the good and the beautiful: family, faith, high moral character, and the wonders and beauty of nature and human life.

This workbook includes 100 lessons, which is 3–4 lessons per week for a normal school year.

Handwriting Workbook Level 5 (PDF)

Handwriting Level 5 is for children in fifth grade.

Recently updated to refine the cursive font and include engaging new art and activities throughout, this course mainly focuses on cursive, but some pages cover refining print handwriting in specific ways. Inspiring quotes, scriptures, and poems are included in the course and may be included more than once for repeated exposure. This course also helps children memorize grammar rules and definitions.

Handwriting Workbook Level 6 (PDF)

Handwriting Level 6 is for children in sixth grade. The course focuses on cursive writing. If children have no experience with cursive writing, they should start with the Level 3 Handwriting course, which introduces cursive writing.

As children copy adages, Bible verses, skillfully written poetry, states and capitals, grammar rules, and presidents of the United States in order of presidency (the first six), children will be learning more than just cursive handwriting.

The text size for cursive writing gets smaller as the course progresses. Also, as the course progresses, instead of just copying cursive writing, children will write original sentences in cursive and convert manuscript print to cursive writing. This will help children to memorize the formation of cursive letters.

This workbook includes 100 sheets, which is 3–4 sheets per week for an average school year.

Handwriting Workbook Level 7 (PDF)

Handwriting Level 7 is for children in seventh grade. The course focuses on cursive writing.

As children copy inspiring adages, Bible verses, skillfully written poetry, the names of Canadian provinces and territories, foreign languages, states, capitals, and presidents of the United States, children will be learning more than just cursive handwriting.

As the course progresses, instead of just copying cursive writing, children will also write original sentences in cursive and convert manuscript print to cursive writing. This will help children to memorize the formation of cursive letters.
