Much of their learning will come from exploring with objects to solve problems practically and there are simple things you can do at home to support their development.

How to help at home

You don’t need to be an expert to support your child with maths or help them develop a good sense of number! Here are three simple, but effective learning ideas that you can try with your child using everyday items at home.

1. Partition numbers

Partitioning means to break numbers into parts. Use objects, such as straws grouped in tens, to show numbers split into tens and ones. How many ways can your child find to partition a number?

For example, 54 could be 50 + 4, 40 + 14, 30 + 24, 20 + 34, or 10 + 44.

2. Tell stories

Make up addition and subtraction stories together. For example: Two badgers, three hedgehogs and a toad have a picnic. How many animals are there altogether? Four rabbits join in. How many are there now? Two animals go home. How many are left?

3. Play shops

To help your child get used to the value of different coins and notes, use real money to play shops. Price up some toys and take turns to be the customer who pays and the shopkeeper who works out the change.

You’ll find more activity ideas in our Kids’ activities section .

What your child will learn at school

Subtraction in columns.

2-digit columns

Here we have a subtraction worksheet laid out in columns. There is no ‘borrowing’ so it is a simple matter of subtracting the units and subtracting the tens.

Subtract 2-digit numbers in columns

Learning the ten times table in Year 2

10x table speedy

Don’t ever suggest that all that needs to be done to multiply by ten is ‘add a nought’. This leads to real problems in later years when multiplying by decimals. Far better to say that the digit moves one place to the left and a zero is put in the units as a place holder.

Speedy 10x table

Five times table in Year 2

5x table speedy

There is, of course, a rhythm and pattern to the five times table, as alternate answers end in zero or 5. This makes it one of the easiest times tables to learn. My latest worksheet can be used as a timed practice, with three sets of 12 questions on the page.

Speedy 5x table

Two times table up to 12

2x table speedy

This page extends our current times table worksheets found in the Four Rules section and can be found in the Year 2 Calculating section.

New Maths Curriculum: Year 2 Statistics

207 statistics

The statutory requirements for Year 2 Statistics :

Pupils should be taught to:

•    interpret and construct simple pictograms, tally charts, block diagrams and simple tables

•    ask and answer simple questions by counting the number of objects in each category and sorting the categories by quantity

•    ask and answer questions about totalling and comparing categorical data.

Main changes and comments

Lists are an important part of this work, such as make a list of the even numbers between 20 and 40. The children should be able to generate their own lists of cars, sweets etc, especially when this fits in with other areas of the curriculum.

Questions can be asked, such as ‘how many cubes will fit in a cup?’ and the children should be able to respond to the question with a plan of action – how they can find out, what equipment they need, how they can display their results.

One of the most important aspects of this work is to ask questions about the data displayed, comparing data: what is the most common?….. how many have?…..    how many have not?…. etc.

Children will come across a wide range of graphs, both to record data and to gather information from.

The most common graph they will work on is the block graph. It is important at this early age that they realise that graphs have to be labelled.

Simple pictograms, where the symbol represents one unit are also introduced in year 2.

New Maths Curriculum: Statistics

New Maths Curriculum: Year 2 Geometry

206 geometry

a. properties of shapes             b. position and direction.

The statutory requirements for Year 2 Geometry :

Properties of shapes

•    identify and describe the properties of 2-D shapes, including the number of sides and symmetry in a vertical line

•    identify and describe the properties of 3-D shapes, including the number of edges, vertices and faces

•    identify 2-D shapes on the surface of 3-D shapes, for example a circle on a cylinder and a triangle on a pyramid

•    compare and sort common 2-D and 3-D shapes and everyday objects.

Position and direction

•    order and arrange combinations of mathematical objects in patterns

•    use mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement including distinguishing between rotation as a turn and in terms of right angles for quarter, half and three-quarter turns (clockwise and anti-clockwise), and movement in a straight line.

Two really useful practical items to help with shape are:

a. Cubes: many shapes can be made from cubes. In year 2 keeping to a small number of cubes, eg four, and exploring all the possibilities, is better than using a much larger number in a more random way. b. Pinboard: a pinboard is very useful for exploring all the possible four and five sided shapes. This may be simply made by nailing panel pins or small nails into a piece of plywood approximately 24cm × 24cm.

Position and direction Clockwise and anti-clockwise turns are introduced including quarter, half and three-quarter turns. They will also be expected to become fluent in telling the time on analogue clocks to five minutes.

New Maths Curriculum: Year 2 Measurement

205 measurement

•    choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure length/height in any direction (m/cm); mass (kg/g); temperature (°C); capacity (litres/ml) to the nearest appropriate unit, using rulers, scales, thermometers and measuring vessels

•    compare and order lengths, mass, volume/capacity and record the results using >, < and =

•    recognise and use symbols for pounds (£) and pence (p); combine amounts to make a particular value

•    find different combinations of coins that equal the same amounts of money

•    solve simple problems in a practical context involving addition and subtraction of money of the same unit, including giving change

•    compare and sequence intervals of time

•    tell and write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to show these times.

One of the key changes is the use of the signs when comparing lengths, mass, volume/capacity.

Children should use standard units of measurement and mental calculations strategies to solve various number problems involving length, mass, capacity and time.

They should be encouraged to explain orally how the problems were solved and begin to write a simple number sentence on paper:

e.g.  12 cm + 6 cm = 18 cm

Children should also be reminded about abbreviations such as cm for centimetre, kg for kilogram and g for gram.

They will also be expected to become fluent in telling the time on analogue clocks to five minutes.

New Maths Curriculum: Year 2 Fractions

204 fractions

The statutory requirements for Year 2 Fractions :

•    recognise, find, name and write fractions 1/3, 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4 of a length, shape, set of objects or quantity

•    write simple fractions e.g. 1/2 of 6 = 3 and recognise the equivalence of 2/4 and 1/2.

Main changes and comments Quite a few new targets in this category. Counting in fractions up to ten is a new target for this year. Much practical work should continue to be done using shapes and objects so that children understand what finding a half or a quarter of a quantity means.

Thirds are introduced in Year 2 now. This enables children to work with fractions other than halves and quarters at an earlier age. (Some children do so much work with halves that they think all fractions can be worked out by dividing by two!!)

Three quarters is also introduced; the first time children come across a non-unit fraction (where the top number is more than one).

A new target is counting up to ten in quarters. This process has two purposes:

a. so that children see the equivalence between a half and two quarters b. so that children see that fractions can add up to more than one whole one.

New Maths Curriculum: Fractions

New Maths Curriculum: Year 2 Multiplication and Division

203 multiplication and division

It’s time to start learning those times tables off by heart; beginning with the 2x, 5x and 10x tables. The statutory requirements for Year 2 Multiplication and division :

  • recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers
  • calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division within the multiplication tables and write them using the multiplication (×), division (÷) and equals (=) signs
  • show that multiplication of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and division of one number by another cannot
  • solve problems involving multiplication and division, using materials, arrays, repeated addition, mental methods, and multiplication and division facts, including problems in contexts.

This is the year that children begin to learn multiplication tables, starting with the two, five and ten times tables. Remember, it is not enough to just count up in fives (5, 10, 15, 20 etc.) the whole sentence needs to be learned (5 times 2 equals 10 etc). Perhaps the main change is that tables are meant to be learned up to 12 times, rather than just 10.

As with addition, it is important to know that multiplication can be done in any order, but not division. The relationship between multiplication and division is now stressed more, with inverse operations for checking made more explicit in the Guidance.

Year 2 multiplication and division statutory requirements

Pairs of numbers that make 20

know-pairs-that-make-20-pg-2

Here we have a straightforward maths worksheet on knowing pairs of numbers that add up to twenty. This is suitable for year 1/2 children or those who are already very confident with knowing pairs of numbers that make ten.

If these facts are not known there are several ways of working the answers out, including:

1. Counting on from the smaller number.

2. Counting on from the smaller number up to 10 and then adding another 10. (If smaller number is below 10.)

3. Counting back from 20, which is trickier.

A good follow up to this page is to ask how many different ways you can make 20 by adding just two numbers.

Year 2 is an exciting time for children. They’ve completed their first year of formal education and they’re ready to tackle more advanced lessons.

Children will spend Year 2 working towards the end of their Key Stage 1 journey. They’ll continue developing foundational knowledge in core subjects and by the end of the year, they’ll be ready and keen to embrace more complex lessons and a more independent learning style.

As for Year 2 maths, children will consolidate their knowledge of maths fundamentals while developing their maths reasoning and problem-solving abilities. When it comes to making sure children engage with the Year 2 maths curriculum, learning resources are hugely important. The best learning materials will help children see just how fun maths can be — they’ll get children excited to learn.

Master the Curriculum is here to provide teachers and parents with all of the Year 2 maths resources they need to help children embrace learning with a smile. From maths worksheets to teaching slides, to interactive videos, our resources can help children master maths and have fun while doing so.

Year 2 White Rose Maths Resources: Learning Materials That Support Teaching For Mastery

Millions of parents, teachers and children all over the UK have discovered the incredible benefits of the White Rose Maths approach. White Rose is all about teaching for mastery, showing all children that they have the potential to become confident mathematicians and encouraging little ones to have fun with number problems.

Here at Master the Curriculum, we’re big fans of the White Rose approach, which is why our Year 2 maths resources are aligned with the White Rose Maths frameworks and small steps to progression.By using our resources to follow the White Rose small steps, you can help children become enthusiastic maths whizzes. They’ll develop a deep understanding of basic maths concepts, and with strong foundational knowledge, they’ll be ready and excited to tackle more challenging number problems as the year goes on.

Our White Rose-style resources are also differentiated (by complexity, not by number), making them perfect for children with varying levels of attainment. Pupils who grasp concepts more quickly than others can deepen their understanding with more complex fluency tasks, rather than move on to new content and topics ahead of their classmates. This way, you can make sure your whole class moves through content at the same pace — no one falls behind or misses out on learning opportunities.
