Travel nurses are registered nurses who fulfill temporary roles at hospitals, clinics, and other medical facilities around the world where there are often shortages. Travel nursing is a win-win: understaffed hospitals get the support they need, and travel nurses get the experience of exploring a new place. You can also get paid more doing it. Many healthcare professionals choose travel nursing for its perks, which can include competitive pay, tax-free housing and meal stipends, and travel reimbursement. When you consider total compensation, travel nurses tend to make more than a staff nurse.
You’ll need to be a Registered Nurse to apply for travel nursing jobs. At least one year of recent experience in the specialty that you are applying for is required, preferably in a hospital/acute care setting, and 2+ years experience is preferred. If you’re already a licensed nurse, then you can work as a travel nurse in your state. Each state requires a license, and you can typically transfer your license from state to state for a fee. This process takes a few weeks. In accordance with the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), a nurse that has a “compact license” can practice in any other compact license state without obtaining an additional license.
One of the advantages of travel nursing over many staff nurse jobs is that it is common to receive compensation in addition to your base salary like housing stipends, travel reimbursement, and meal stipends. If you’re able to claim a permanent tax-home, then you can be paid a blended rate, meaning your salary is taxed as ordinary income but your stipends are tax-free. When you consider this additional compensation and the tax savings, travel nurses can expect to make more than staff nurses.
Yes! Many travel nurses travel with their partners and children. It helps to also have a partner that can work remotely or seasonally. However, when children turn school aged this can be tough. Travel nursing with school-aged children can be made easier by taking longer contracts, extending assignments, or homeschooling your children. You may also be able to choose assignments that are during the summer months when most children have a break.

The best thing about working with Host Healthcare was my recruiter, Chris Murillo. He exemplifies the model for responsive, timely, and enthusiastic service. Chris also makes the effort to develop personal relationships with his clients. This is a man who truly cares about me as a person. Kudos to Host Healthcare for hiring and retaining this quality individual.
I’ve had a great experience with Host Healthcare. Lauren Pollacci is an excellent recruiter and easily the best one I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with, she made the entire process painless. She is always extremely helpful with any need or concern I may have. I couldn’t imagine working with another recruiter at this point!
I've been working with Host Healthcare as a travel nurse for three years now and wouldn't change a thing. My recruiter Kat Cook has made the transition from staff nursing to travel nursing so easy. She is always available, listens to the needs of both myself and my wife (travel pair), and finds us the best jobs in the best locations! 10 out of 10 would recommend her and the agency every time.
Just started my 7th PT contract with Host and every contract has been a smooth transition. I’ve had great communication with my recruiter Kathryn Cook who has helped me land some great jobs and help with the credentialing process. I plan on staying with Host for many more years.

If a nurse has already gone through the licensing process in another jurisdiction, the candidate may be eligible for licensure by endorsement. A nurse who has passed an acceptable exam will not need to go through the examination process again. California is not, however, a member of the nurse compact.
An out of state licensed RN will be required to provide verification from the state in which he originally passed the license exam in addition to the one where he is currently licensed. Out-of-state candidates are not required to use Live Scan for fingerprinting, but should be aware that if they opt for a fingerprint card in lieu of Live Scan, an additional fee will be assessed by the Board. Out-of-state nurses are eligible to work under a temporary license.

In today's fast-paced world, finding a work-life balance is a challenge many professionals face. This balance can often seem even more elusive for those in the healthcare sector. However, for those working with AMN Healthcare Allied , the experience can be different.
With over eight years under her belt, Alyce H., a dedicated Pediatric Cardiac Sonographer traveler shares how AMN Healthcare has helped her achieve a fulfilling work-life balance both on and off assignment.
“It’s mind-boggling to me that it has been [so] long! It feels like I’ve only been on this adventure for maybe three or four years.”
These are the words of a seasoned traveler who has spent eight years with AMN Healthcare Allied. Alyce's longevity with the company speaks volumes about the unique opportunities and support she has received. From meeting new people to navigating different environments, she has experienced a world of learning and growth that a permanent position could never offer.
"I feel that being able to meet new people, the joy of being able to navigate in any environment, learn different things from each facility that I wouldn’t have at just one place, and having the ability to experience my passion to travel internationally between contracts, has been a great adventure."
When asked to describe her work-life balance, she said, “Well, I mean, who really has a great life balance? Lol.” Despite the humor, her schedule paints a picture of a balanced and fulfilling life.
"I work five days a week with a little sprinkle of happy hour with coworkers from time to time. On weekends, I try to explore nearby cities, and between assignments, I spend at least five weeks traveling internationally and another five weeks visiting family each year."
" I have actually never taken a contract with another company outside of AMN. My recruiter with AMN has always made me feel safe and comfortable, two things that matter when this is how you make your living"
One crucial factor for Alyce's successful journey with AMN Healthcare Allied is undoubtedly her supportive recruiter. Her recruiter has been more than just a contact; they have been a guiding force, helping her find opportunities that align with her career path and personal interests.
One of the standout features of working with AMN Healthcare Allied is the variety of travel assignments . Alyce's destination so far is Duke Children’s Hospital in North Carolina .
“I have been there three times and would go back time and time again! Every single person in the entire Cardiac Department is so welcoming and inviting. It felt like ‘HOME.’”
Traveling for work has not only allowed her to experience different locations but has also contributed significantly to her career growth.
“Being able to work in different locations opens your educational opportunities drastically. Each institution specializes in different cardiac diseases, and adapting to new people and environments has helped me become more comfortable and open while exploring the world and new cultures.”
The freedom that comes with allied travel has allowed Alyce to discover new passions and hobbies that she might never have explored otherwise.
“I wouldn’t have been able to experience international travel as much. The freedom and finances that traveling for work gives me are not something I would have had in a permanent job. I wouldn't be able to take so much time off at once, Allied travel was definitely the best decision I ever made!”
From volunteering and teaching doctors new skills in Rwanda to enjoying local cuisines, her travel assignments have been filled with memorable experiences. One such experience was a cooking class in Morocco.
“The best meal I have ever eaten was Chicken Tagine in Morocco. During a cooking course, we gathered fresh ingredients from a local market, including the freshest chicken I had ever had. I've had plenty of amazing food experiences from dining in Malaysia to eating Swahili food on a rooftop in Zanzibar, but the experience in Morocco was my most memorable meal.”
For those considering a career in allied travel, Alyce offers this piece of advice:
“Keep going towards your goals. Life happens regardless; you may as well explore your passion to the fullest while you can! Every day I wake up is an opportunity for new experiences, and I try to get out of my comfort zone in order to make that happen. ”
If you're looking for a career that offers both professional growth and personal fulfillment, consider joining AMN Healthcare Allied. Experience the world, expand your skill set, and find the perfect work-life balance just like our seasoned traveler.
