ancient Rome
Introduction.
![romans homework At the height of its power the Roman Empire covered all the lands surrounding the Mediterranean Sea.](https://cdn.britannica.com/89/89989-004-7A6556DC.jpg)
Ancient Rome can be divided into two main periods. The Roman people established a republic in about 509 bce . The republic became an empire in 27 bce . That empire lasted for almost 500 years, until the 400s ce .
Roman Culture
Ancient Rome made many lasting contributions to world culture. But the Romans also absorbed the culture of the peoples they conquered. For instance, the Romans took many ideas about art from the ancient Greeks . Romans also worshiped many Greek gods, though they gave them new names. Later, Rome adopted Christianity , a religion from the Middle East.

Roman writers wrote history, comedy, tragedy, and poetry. From Latin, the ancient Roman language, many other languages later developed. These languages, known as the Romance languages, include French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Romanian. People today use the Latin alphabet to write these and other western languages, including English.

An important group called the Senate gave advice to the consuls. The members, called senators, were patricians. They met in a building in the Forum, an area of Rome that was the center of public life. The Senate grew more powerful over the years.
Most Romans were not patricians but plebeians, or common people. The plebeians staged an uprising in 494 bce . They gradually won more power. By 367 bce one of the two consul positions was set aside for the plebeians.
Rome suffered some setbacks as it slowly expanded its territory. In about 390 bce a northern group called the Gauls took over the city. They would not leave until the Romans paid them a large amount of gold. Another group called the Samnites defeated the Romans in 321 bce . In general, however, Rome’s conquests could not be stopped. By 275 bce Rome had forced the Greeks to give up their colonies in Italy.
By 260 bce Rome’s last remaining rival in the western Mediterranean was the city of Carthage , in North Africa. For more than a century the Romans fought Carthage for power. It took three wars—called the Punic Wars—before the Roman forces totally destroyed Carthage in 146 bce .
Rome then turned to other areas, including Sicily, Spain, Macedonia, Greece, and Asia Minor (now Turkey). Governors called proconsuls managed most of the conquered lands. They had great power. The Romans taxed the conquered people heavily. They also enslaved many conquered people. The Romans put these captives to work on farms and as personal servants in cities. Slaves were used in Rome until about the 300s ce .
![romans homework Augustus was the first Roman emperor.](https://cdn.britannica.com/46/91346-004-9CB9E3D0.jpg)
Meanwhile, Rome continued to expand its empire. The most successful general was Julius Caesar . He won victories in far-off areas and then took power in Rome. However, his enemies assassinated him in 44 bce . This set off another period of civil war.
Peace finally came under the leadership of Julius Caesar’s grandnephew Octavian. Octavian defeated his rivals for power, including the Roman general Mark Antony and the Egyptian queen Cleopatra , by 30 bce . He was crowned Rome’s first emperor in 27 bce . He became known as Augustus Caesar . During Augustus’ rule, the emperor gained absolute control over the state and came to be worshiped like a god.
Two centuries of peace and progress followed. The empire’s frontiers expanded all the way to Britain and the Arabian Peninsula. The Romans built roads, bridges, and aqueducts, or water pipes, throughout their vast empire. They also brought their laws to conquered lands.
The emperor Tiberius ruled from 14 to 37 ce . During this time the Roman government in Palestine put Jesus to death. Some of Jesus’ followers, called Christians, later set up a community in Rome. At first the Romans did not agree with the Christian religion. They mistreated and killed many Christians. But in 312 ce the emperor Constantine I became a Christian himself. Christianity eventually became the main religion of the Roman Empire.
By this time, the empire was weakening. Constantine believed he could strengthen the empire if he moved its center away from Rome. In 330 he created a new capital in the Greek colony of Byzantium. He renamed the city Constantinople (now Istanbul , Turkey).
After the death of the emperor Theodosius I in 395, the Roman Empire split in two. The Eastern Roman Empire was based in Constantinople. The Western Roman Empire was based in Rome. Several groups of outside peoples, including the Vandals and the Huns , attacked the western empire. A group called the Visigoths attacked the city of Rome in 410. The last western emperor fell in 476. This brought an end to the Western Roman Empire. The eastern empire continued as the Byzantine Empire until 1453.

The Romans facts
The Romans facts for kids KS2 learning at Primary School. Homework help with the history of Romans, the Roman Empire and places to visit in the UK where you can learn more about the Romans.
How did the Romans begin?
The legend says there were two twins called Romulus and Remus. When their uncle decided to have them killed they were put in a trough and into the River Tiber. They were found by a wolf and a woodpecker, and then raised by a shepherd. The twins eventually went back to the River Tiber where they were found, and created A city. Romulus set a boundary around the city to keep his brother out. but his brother Remus crossed the boundary and Romulus killed him and named the city after himself. The city of Rome.
It was nearly 3,000 years ago when the population of Rome started to grow into the most powerful city in Italy. It was ruled by Kings until the last king was driven out. The city then choose their own leaders, a group of men who came from the most important families. This was the beginning of the Roman Empire as the Romans (the people of Rome) controlled the whole of Italy.
The Roman Empire
The Roman Empire grew even more and took control of many counties in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa over the next 500 years. The Romans were ruthless and bloodthirsty and had a strong army so they won battles and took over the land. But the Romans didnÔÇÖt stop there, they wanted to control even more land.
A gladiator slave called Spartacus gathered a group of Gladiators together to revolt (do battle) against the Roman army. After a year of travelling through the Roman Empire doing battles, they still haven’t managed to take control of Rome. Eventually, Spartacus died in battle and the other gladiators were crucified by the Roman army.

Who was Julius Caesar?
As the Romans became more powerful and took more land, the Senators started to argue how they should run the land. In 49BC a man called Julius Caesar came to Rome with his army and took power. Although he tried to make peace, the Senators thought he might become another king and not wanting that again, they killed him.
Who was the first emperor of Rome?
While the Senators still argued, Julius Caesar’s great-nephew, Augustus, fought and won control of Rome. He became Rome’s first emperor. Altogether, there were 147 Roman Emperors over the whole time the Roman Empire ruled.

The Roman Army
Over the next 150 years, the Romans took control of even more land. They had a strong, well-organised army that could surround a whole city so no one could get out and then eventually, force their way in. Soldiers were very well trained and could march over 50km (30 miles) a day. Any healthy man who was aged between 17 and 46 had to join the army. They would then remain in the army for 25 years.
Places to see Romans
Roman britain.
By 55 BC The Roman Empire had reached Britain where the Celts controlled the land. In their first invasion, under Julius Caesar’s rule, the Celts won and the Romans didnÔÇÖt get what they wanted. So they tried again 100 years later when Emperor Claudius was ruling. This time they won and took control of southern Britain.
The Celts, not happy with the invasion tried to fight back, but the Roman army was too powerful and each time the Romans defeated them.
The Romans never managed to control Scotland as it was ruled by fierce warrior tribes. In the end, the Romans built a wall called Hadrian’s wall in the north of England to keep those fierce warriors out.
Roman facts
- Romans were great engineers. They built everything from road, bridge and aqueducts (raised channels to carry water), to drains, sewers and the first-ever block of flats.
- Public bath-houses were a great way for Romans to relax and meet friends. They had hot and cold swimming pools, sports facilities and offered massages and beauty treatment.
- Before having a bath Romans would rub olive oil over there bodies and scrape it off with metal scrappers called strigils.
- The Romans were the first to have underfloor heating. Hot air, heated by a furnace and circulated through brick-lined pipes underneath the floor.
- Romans spent their time by eating, drinking, gambling, going to the theatre, chariot races or gladiator fights.

What is Hadrian’s wall?
Hadrian’s wall was ordered to be made by the Roman emperor Hadrian. It is 117 kilometres long and 4.5 metres high in places. Built-in the north of England, its main purpose was to keep out Celtic raiders.
How did the Roman Empire end?
Around 200AD, the Roman Empire started to fall apart with soldiers were choosing their own emperors and fighting among themselves. In 395AD, the Roman Empire became split permanently into two, East and West.
Then the city of Rome was attacked twice. A Visigoth chief called Odoacer made himself King of Italy and ended the Western Empire. The Eastern Empire continued for another thousand years.

Did you know?
- The Romans had quite a story to explain how the city began. They said that the god Mars or Hercules had twin boys named Romulus and Remus , but that these boys were raised by a mummy wolf. When they were older, they wanted to create their own city but couldn’t agree where. They ended up fighting so badly that Romulus killed Remus, which meant that only Romulus went on to rule the city, which he named Rome (which sounds a bit like Romulus).
- Rome was built near the Tiber River , which is the third longest river in Italy.
- If you wanted to look your best in Rome, you’d need to wear a toga . A toga was a long piece of cloth that men would wrap around themselves. Underneath the toga, people just wore plain tunics.
- The numbers that Romans used look very different from the numbers we use . They counted using a sort of code of letters – I stands for 1, II stands for 2 and III stands for three. It gets more complicated after that – V stands for 5, and the number 4 in Roman numerals is IV. This means 5 minus 1, which equals 4.
- The way we set up our calendar is like the calendar that the Romans used. Julius Caesar made a calendar based on 365 days in a year, and 366 days in leap years.
- The Romans spoke a language called Latin. While nobody speaks Latin anymore, lots of languages we speak today are at least partly based on Latin words – even English!
- The Romans all went to the same place to take baths – these were called bath houses. They would be decorated in pretty mosaics, and have hot and cold water so people could wash properly. People could get a massage there if they wanted, play sports, and even stay a while to chat with friends.
- In 79 AD, a volcano called Mount Vesuvius erupted in one of the most famous explosions in history. The ash that came out of the volcano buried two cities – Pompeii and Herculaneum . These cities weren’t uncovered until 1,700 years later!
- plebs – people who weren’t slaves, and who owned shops, land or had a certain kind of trade (like being a blacksmith)
- equestrians – people who were rich and successful, but weren’t born into patrician families. You had to own a certain amount of property to become an equestrian.
- patricians – people who were part of families that had been in the first ever group of senators that governed Rome

The Roman empire dominated Europe and the lands around the Mediterranean Sea for hundreds of years.
The city of Rome started as a farming village near the river Tiber in present-day Italy. The city grew and was initially governed by kinds; around 509 BC Rome became a republic ruled by Senators, men from the wealthiest families. Over time the Roman republic took over all of Italy and in 49 BC a general called Julius Caesar seized power. His great-nephew Octavian became the first emperor of Rome in 31 BC. Over the next 150 years Rome conquered lands all around the Mediterranean Sea; the Empire was at its largest in 117 AD when Trajan was emperor.
The Romans' success was due to their powerful army . Once they had conquered a new place (which they called a province), the Romans established their way of life there and the people they conquered had to pay taxes to Rome, follow Roman laws and worship Roman gods and goddesses . The Romans built a huge network of roads around their lands, as well as aqueducts to supply water to cities and public buildings like temples and bath houses.
If you had to make a road, what would you do? The Romans knew exactly what to do. they made sure their roads were straight and even. In fact, Roman roads were so good that some are still around today! When they built roads, they started by digging a long hole that they’d fill up with different layers of rocks and dirt. They also made sure that water had a place to go when it rained, which kept the road in good condition.
When the Romans wanted to have fun , they’d go to the Colosseum to watch gladiators fight or to see plays. You can still see the Colosseum in Rome – it’s not exactly like it was back in Roman times, but you can get an idea of how impressive it would have been back then. The Colosseum was first called the Flavian Amphitheatre. It is shaped like an oval, and is called an amphitheatre because it doesn’t have a roof. Chariot races weren’t held at the Colosseum – people would go to the Circus Maximus for that. It was as long as about six football pitches put together, and it had two rounded ends where the chariots would turn to complete another lap.
In big cities, sometimes there isn’t enough water in nearby lakes and rivers for everyone to get what they need to cook and clean. The Romans solved this problem by inventing aqueducts that carried water from sources that were farther away from the city, making sure that everyone in the city was able to get fresh water delivered straight to them. Aqueducts are long lines of grooves that water could run along, and they were built high in the air to make sure the water stayed clean. You can still see some Roman aqueducts around today.
By around 200 AD Rome was becoming less powerful. In 395 AD the Empire was permanently split in two parts; in 476 AD the Western Empire ended after the city of Rome was destroyed by the Visigoths, called "barbarians" by the Romans.
Roman names to know:
Virgil (70-19 BC) – Virgil was a famous Roman poet who wrote the Aeneid, an epic poem about a prince called Aeneas.
Claudius (10 BC-54 AD) – Claudius was the fourth Roman Emperor and led the Roman army that conquered Britain.
Cicero (106-43 BC) – Cicero was a famous Roman orator, which means he was known for giving good speeches. He could write well, and could also speak well in public. He is also known for being a philosopher.
Pliny the Younger (61-112 AD) – Pliny the Younger wrote many letters about the life and times he lived in, which have helped us understand more about Rome and the things that happened then. Pliny lived during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which killed his uncle, Pliny the Elder.

In the Roman times, life was great. Unless you were a Celt. The Romans invented baths, toilets, flats and even underfloor heating – which would be very useful when they invaded Britain in AD 43.
Life in Roman times
If you lived in Roman times, then your experience would depend on whether you were poor or rich.
If you were rich, then you would have lived in a nice, large town house and you may have also had villas (more on those later) in the countryside where you went to avoid the crowds.
However, if you were poor, then you would have lived in a cramped flat with no running water or toilets. This didn’t change because the Emperor couldn’t be bothered to build better housing for the poor.
All Romans loved going to the public baths. Because of this, all of the large cities in the empire had at least one public bath. There is one major Roman bath that still exists today in a town called (wait for it) Bath in England.
At the baths, Romans would meet their friends and catch up on the latest gossip. Men and women went to the baths, but they tended to bathe seperately, since bathing together wasn’t acceptable. Unlike housing, baths were cheap and sometimes, wealthy people would allow normal people to bathe in them for free for a day by “sponsoring” them. They usually did this to make themselves popular with the local people.
As well as bathing in public, they also went to the toilet in public. I know it sounds weird, but they were a lot less squeamish when it came to hygiene than we are now. Only the very wealthy had their own private toilets.
There were two types of toilets that existed in Roman times: a large jar fastened to the wall of a building (which was hopefully regularly emptied) and a multi-seater public toilet which had many seats and was also where Romans had a chat whilst they had a poo. Charming!
And to make things even more disgusting (we hope you aren’t eating whilst reading this), they also didn’t have toilet paper. Instead, they used a sponge on a stick. Once it had been used it was dipped into the fresh water supply running down in the centre of the toilets and passed onto the next person.
The Roman army
In order for the Romans to conquer countries, they needed a good army.
How the army was organised
The Roman army was organised in legions. How you make a single legion is rather complicated, which is why we’ve created a diagram to help.
Firstly, here’s a key of who’s who:
![romans homework](https://homeworkhelpforkids.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/roman-army-5-1-1024x576.png)
So know we know who is who, let’s see how they made what’s called a “tent”:
![romans homework](https://homeworkhelpforkids.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/roman-army-1-1-1024x576.png)
A tent was made up of 8 soldiers. As you can see below, you needed 10 tents to make a century. Each century was led by a centurion.
![romans homework](https://homeworkhelpforkids.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/roman-army-2-1-1024x576.png)
The next level up was a cohort. You needed 6 centuries to make up a cohort. (Represented in diagram by centurions.)
![romans homework](https://homeworkhelpforkids.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/roman-army-3-1-1024x576.png)
Now, this is the final part, which is where it may get a bit confusing. So, in order to make a legion, you needed 10 cohorts and around 500 tradesmen and clerks. And you now have a legion!

Facts about the romans.
1) Rome was founded in 753BC by its first king, Romulus. It grew into a rich and powerful city during the next few hundred years.
2) By AD 117 the Roman Empire included the whole of Italy, all the lands around the Mediterranean and much of Europe, including England, Wales and parts of Scotland.
Did you know that we have a FREE downloadable Romans primary resource ? Great for teachers, homeschoolers and parents alike!
3) Roman legend says that Romulus had a twin brother called Remus. As babies they were abandoned in the area which later became Rome. A she-wolf found and raised them, but when they grew up, Romulus fought and killed Remus and became the first ruler of Rome!
4) The Romans built such a huge empire and conquered new lands, thanks to their strong army. The Roman army could march up to 40km a day!
5) During battle, a Roman soldier or ‘legionary’ first hurled his spear at the enemy, then he fought him with his sword. To protect himself, he carried a wooden shield and wore a metal helmet and armour.
6) The Romans didn’t spend all their time fighting – they were amazing architects and engineers too! They built roads and walls – things we now take for granted.
7) To bring water to their cities, the clever Romans built aqueducts – a system of channels and bridges – to transport water for public baths and toilets!
8) The Romans liked to enjoy their food, often lying down on a couch while eating with their hands. They occasionally used a spoon, but they would never use a knife and fork. Rich Romans liked to eat exotic food, such as stork, roast parrot and even flamingo!
9) The Romans believed in gods and goddesses who ruled over different areas of life. For example, Neptune was the god of the ocean, and they prayed to him to protect them at sea. Temples were built to honour the gods, and people would visit them with offerings.
10) One of the most famous buildings left by the Ancient Romans is the Colosseum – a huge ampitheatre in the centre of Rome. This is where members of the public would come to watch sporting events and games, including battles between Roman gladiators!
11) Tunics – two pieces of woollen fabric sewn together at the sides and shoulders, with openings for your arms and head – were the most common clothes in Rome. Some Romans also wore togas – a kind of woollen shawl – to show how wealthy they were.

To be a Roman citizen, or even an Emperor, you did not have to be born in Rome. The Emperor Septimius Severus was an African, from Libya.
