Did I mention these spelling activities work for ANY word list? Whether it’s weekly spelling words, vocabulary words, or phonics skill words, all you need to do is type in your list. ONCE! Then ta-da! The activities on every page will generate based on the words you put in.

See all the words in the table? I typed those in! Now they’ll appear on all of the pages!

First, you get a word list!

These come two to a page, so you only need half the copies! Don’t need it? That’s okay, too. Just don’t print it.

Free Spelling Activities

spelling word practice sheets editable

I’m sharing 12 FREE, NO PREP, printable and digital Spelling Activities for Kindergarten, first and second grade students! These activities provide meaningful and engaging spelling practice and are perfect for any word work literacy center. I also offer details about my Year-Long Weekly Word Study Resource that offers weekly word lists, practice activities, parent letters, assessments and MORE for k-3!

Hey Friends!

I’m curious…. in your already crowded instruction schedule, does word study have a place?  Have you found a way to make spelling instructiion more than just giving a list of words on Monday and assessing on Friday?  Resources for teaching spelling can be hard to come by. Sometimes it feels like with the intense focus on more critical thinking skills in literacy, explicit spelling instruction (or word study) has become an outdated practice.

But I think we can all agree we all want our students to be strong spellers!  Spelling is important!  It is related to reading.  If students can spell well, they will read well.   It’s related to writing.  When students spell well they can focus on communicating their ideas, rather than worrying about how to construct words.

If you are looking for a word study program to use with your students, or maybe just looking to freshen up your spelling activities then you have come to the right place.  Today I’m excited to describe to you the Year-Long Weekly Word Study bundles I have created for kindergarten, first, second and third grade, as well as share my FREE, NO PREP Spelling Activities!

Free Spelling Activities

You’ve got a lot on your plate, so to help lighten your load I created this resource that includes 12 different EDITABLE spelling printables!  It is totally free and provides meaningful practice and the repetition students need for mastery of the spelling words and phonics patterns you teach.  With many activities to choose from, spelling practice will always feel fresh and engaging for students.

To save you time, I created these Spelling Activities as an editable “autofill” document.  This means the ONLY thing you have to do is insert your spelling words (up to 12) into the spelling activities word list.  That’s it!!  Once you type your words into the word list, you simply print the pages you want to use.

Any of these activities make a great addition to your weekly word work routine.  Simply pair the spelling word cards with a pocket chart and print a few activities for an instant literacy center!  They also make great morning work or homework practice.

The FREE resource includes ALL of the following activities:

💗 Trace and Write Spelling

💗 ABC Order

💗 ipad Spelling

💗 Vowel Consonant Spelling

💗 Sign Language Spelling

💗 Rainbow Spelling *note this has been updated to include Rainbow Sound Spelling

💗 Triangle Spelling

💗 Spelling Illustrations

💗 Make a Word Search

💗 Spelling Word Shapes

💗 Roll-a-Color Spelling

A Year-Long Weekly Word Study Resource for K-3

So while the activity pages I’ve shared above could be used in a variety of ways, I know there are teachers who are looking for more.  They want an actual program that explicitly teaches students different spelling patterns each week and offers them meaningful practice so students can master those patterns. That’s why I created Year-Long Weekly Word Study Resources for Kindergarten, first, second and third grade students.

spelling word practice sheets editable

Word study units are different from traditional spelling units.  Instead of giving students a list of words to memorize each week, word study units focus on a specific phonics skill.  Students are given explicit instruction on the phonics pattern.  They engage in activities throughout the week that allow them to practice the phonics skill and investigate and discover the patterns in words.

Word study offers students opportunities to investigate and discover the patterns in words. When students have knowledge of these patterns they don’t learn to spell just one word at a time.  They can generalize and apply their new learning to their reading and their writing.

My Weekly Word Study Units have EVERYTHING you need to provide your students with effective word study instruction and spelling practice all year long!

I have different units for kindergarten , first , second , AND third-grade students. While the units vary a bit from grade to grade, they all contain these core components:

💕 A Scope and Sequence

We know that for instruction to be most effective, it must be systematic and follow a scope and sequence . The scope and sequences included in these resources are based on my learning including Wiley Blevins’ book,  A Fresh Look at Phonics *,  The Reading Teacher’s Top Ten Tools, and  Speech to Print  and are specific for each grade.

The word study units each include a phonics scope and sequence specific to the grade.

💕 Word cards

These word cards can be printed out on card stock and used in centers, small groups, or for your whole group instruction.

💕 3 Editable Practice Printables for Each Unit

We know that in order for students to master the skills we teach they need a lot of practice.  For every unit, you’ll get 3 editable practice printables. The activities vary slightly depending on grade and the skill that is being taught.

spelling word practice sheets editable

💕 Editable Assessments

spelling word practice sheets editable

While the assessments vary a bit from grade to grade, they all include:

– Word Dictation:  words that follow the week’s phonics skills and bonus spaces for review or high-frequency words.

– Sentence Dictation:  a sentence that includes target phonics skill words, previously taught phonics skill words and high-frequency words.

– Spelling Error Analysis:  a sentence that includes target phonics skill words, previously taught phonics skill words and high-frequency words. Students must correct the mistakes and rewrite the corrected sentences.

💕 A Teacher Assessment Guide and Master Word List

You’ll get an answer key for each unit to make it extra easy for you to quickly check those assessments!

spelling word practice sheets editable

💕  A Family Letter for Each Unit

We know that word study looks a little different than traditional spelling that families may be accustomed to. This letter will help families understand the shift, inform them of the focus for the unit, and offer them ways to support their children at home.

If I purchase the 20 word set but only have 17 words, will it still work? Our number of words vary weekly. We may have 15-20 words. It just depends on the phonetic skill for that week.

' src=

August 15, 2021 at 9:12 am

Hi Casey, If you have fewer than 20 words, the worksheets will still generate. However, the worksheets will still populate with 20 spaces, so there will be some empty boxes on each page. Sometimes these empty boxes will be at the bottom of the page, but some pages are randomized, so the empty spaces may appear in various places on the page. If you’d like to see some screenshots of what those pages might look like with fewer than 20 words, please let me know. Storie

What is Spelling and What are Spelling Practice Worksheets?

Spelling refers to the act of forming words correctly by arranging letters in the proper order. It is a fundamental aspect of written language and involves knowledge of letter-sound relationships, phonics rules, and patterns. Correct spelling not only conveys meaning clearly but also enhances reading comprehension and overall language proficiency. Through practice, exposure to words, and understanding rules, individuals can develop their skills and become proficient in spelling a wide range of words. Worksheets play a crucial role in helping kids develop their skills and expand their vocabulary. These printable spelling worksheets provide a structured platform for students to practice words, reinforce rules, and engage in various activities. Whether it's spelling practice sheets for kindergarten students or more advanced worksheets for higher grades, these resources offer a wide range of benefits.

Why Are They Important and How Are They Best Used?

It is important for children to practice their words throughout the week. These spelling practice templates are perfect for class work or homework, and are fun to use. All of our templates are customizable, making it easy for teachers to differentiate student assignments without it being obvious. Simply create a worksheet based on our templates to fit the needs of your class, or print as is!

These handouts can be supported by spelling test worksheets , as they provide a means to assess progress and identify areas that require additional focus or review. By incorporating periodic spelling tests alongside regular practice activities, educators can foster skills, vocabulary growth, independent learning abilities, provide targeted feedback, and adjust instruction accordingly to enhance overall proficiency.

Spelling practice worksheets are important tools for several reasons and can be best used in the following ways:

  • Continuous Improvement: Spelling worksheets for kindergarten and beyond support ongoing skill development by offering regular practice opportunities. Kids can use these printable spelling worksheets to identify areas of weakness, track their progress, and focus on improving specific skills over time.

This repetition helps solidify understanding of patterns, rules, and word recognition. Practice worksheets offer a range of activities, such as word puzzles, word sorts, or writing exercises. These varied activities keep students engaged and provide multiple avenues for practicing various skills.
  • Skill Development: Activities provided in these worksheets encourage students to practice words, improving their accuracy and overall skills. Whether it's through practice writing, completing missing letters, or engaging with lists, these worksheets provide targeted exercises to reinforce correct spelling.
  • Vocabulary Expansion: Worksheets often incorporate vocabulary words and sight words, helping students expand their word bank and strengthen their reading comprehension. By encountering new words within the context of practice, students improve their vocabulary skills alongside proficiency.

Best Use of Spelling Practice Worksheets

To get the most out of these worksheets, educators should:

  • Introduce new concepts before assigning related worksheets.
  • Provide clear instructions and model examples to ensure students understand the activities.
  • Offer guidance and support as needed, particularly for younger or struggling students.
  • Encourage students to review their work and self-correct any mistakes.

These worksheets foster continuous improvement, reinforce skills, develop vocabulary, and provide a structured platform for students to enhance their proficiency.

With these convenient tools at hand, educators can effortlessly create a handout that caters to the unique requirements of their class, fostering a productive and engaging learning experience.

Tips for Creating Spelling Worksheets

  • Determine the Words: Select a set of words that align with your curriculum or the specific focus of the practice worksheet. Consider the grade level and patterns appropriate for your students, especially when creating worksheets for kindergarten.
  • Organize the Worksheet Format: Design the layout of the worksheet, creating sections or rows for each spelling word. Ensure there is enough space for students to write or practice writing the words.
  • Incorporate Engaging Spelling Activities: Integrate various activities into the worksheet to make it interactive and engaging. Examples include word searches, fill-in-the-blank exercises, word scrambles, or creating sentences with the spelling words.
  • Provide Word Support: Depending on the students' needs, include additional support such as visual cues, pictures, or definitions alongside the spelling words. This can assist with comprehension and reinforce vocabulary development.
  • Customize to Fit Learning Objectives: Tailor the worksheet to meet specific learning objectives or skills you want to reinforce. For instance, you can focus on specific patterns, word families, or vocabulary related to a particular theme or subject.
  • Utilize Technology Tools: Explore online resources and tools that allow you to create custom spelling worksheets. These tools often provide features such as word banks, automatic word shuffling, and various formatting options, making the process more efficient.
  • Review and Proofread: Before finalizing the worksheet, review the words, instructions, and activity content to ensure accuracy and clarity. Check for any errors or inconsistencies that may confuse students.
  • Print or Share the Worksheet: Once you are satisfied with the final product, either print it out for physical distribution or save it as a digital file to share electronically with your students. Consider the format that best suits your instructional needs.

Activity Ideas for Using Spelling Practice Worksheets

They provide opportunities for children to actively engage with the words, reinforce skills, and make practice enjoyable and interactive without the added pressure of it being a test or formal assessment. Check out some of our awesome ideas!

  • Word Scramble: Create a section on the worksheet where students unscramble jumbled letters to form the correct spelling of the given words. This activity challenges students' word decoding skills and reinforces the correct sequence of letters.
  • Word Sort: Include a word sort activity where students categorize the words based on specific criteria. They can sort words by patterns, syllables, or word families, promoting critical thinking and strengthening their understanding of word relationships.
  • Word Pyramid: Design a word pyramid activity where students start with a single letter at the top and add letters below to form a complete word. Students can follow the pattern or phonetic rules to create words with increasing complexity.
  • Fill in the Blanks: Provide sentences with missing words, and students need to fill in the blanks with the correct spelling. This activity reinforces contextual understanding and encourages students to apply their knowledge in a meaningful way.
  • Spelling Word Art: Allow the class to showcase their creativity by incorporating an art element. Have students write each word in a decorative or artistic way, using different colors, fonts, or design elements. This activity engages students visually while reinforcing skills.
  • Spelling Word Puzzles: Create word puzzles, such as word searches or crosswords, using the words. Students search for the words within a grid of letters or solve clues to complete the crossword, promoting word recognition and problem-solving skills.
  • Spelling Bingo: Adapt the traditional bingo game to focus on spelling words. Create a bingo grid with the words randomly placed. Call out the words, and students mark the corresponding words on their grids. This game adds an element of excitement and competition to practice.
  • Spelling Word Sentences: Include a section where students create their own sentences using the spelling words. This activity encourages students to apply the words in context, reinforcing their understanding of word usage and sentence structure.
  • Dictation Sentences: Include dictation sentences in your worksheets, where students listen to sentences containing spelling words and write them down. This activity enhances both listening skills and accuracy.
  • Practice Writing: Provide space for students to write words multiple times, allowing them to practice forming the letters and reinforcing correct spelling through repetition.

Word Tracing Practice - Original

If you’ve ever been scouring the internet looking for a specific word on a word tracing worksheet then you’re going to love this free editable word tracing worksheet practice printable. You can customize it to say anything you’d like!

Not only can you put together custom printable worksheets based on your child’s skill level or learning goals but it comes in multiple fonts too. There’s guided tracing and bubble letters for those early writers and cursive fonts for kids who need handwriting practice.

Free Editable Word Tracing Worksheet Practice Printable

I love that you can use this worksheet maker to customize your child’s writing practice. It’s perfect for preschoolers, kindergarten age kids, or homework help. The best part? It’s free!

Just enter the words you want on your printable worksheet into the generator, choose your font, and print it off. The more words you list the smaller they’ll get so make sure to adjust based on your child’s skill level. Preschoolers need larger words to practice on.

Why Should My Child Practice Word Tracing?

After they can write their name it’s important to have early writers broaden their writing skills. When they’re just starting out, though, it’s difficult for kids to remember how letters are formed. That’s why word tracing worksheets are helpful for early learners.

Worksheets are also a great way to improve vocabulary and get preschoolers ready to start kindergarten by practicing “school work”. You could also use this word tracing generator in your homeschool to teach all kinds of different concepts.

How to Choose Words for Word Tracing Practice

Most of the time writing practice worksheets choose the words for us. While that does take some of the uncertainty out of what to teach - it also means you don’t get to customize what your child is practicing.

When you create your word tracing practice sheets in the free generator you’ll get a custom worksheet that can say anything you want.

Some ideas to help you choose what words to practice:

  • Choose words with letters you want your child to practice. That might be simple words like cat or fish, or pick words that frequent letters your child needs more practice with.
  • Work on vocabulary. Writing is a great way to reinforce learning a new word to young kids.
  • Improve spelling. By writing out words in repetition kids will eventually learn to spell better. Start with common words for your child’s age group or create custom worksheets based on your school age kid’s spelling tests.
  • Learn another language. If your child is practicing words in a second language or learning ESL custom writing worksheets based on tricky words or phrases can be really helpful.
  • Practice “like” words. Grouping words together on a single sheet can help reinforce the similarities between certain words, especially for beginner readers. For example, start with at, then add words like bat, cat, hat, and so on. Have your child write the “at” in one colour and the rest of the word in another.

If you’re still unsure then a great starting point is the Dolce word list . It’s broken down by age so you can pick words that are suitable for your child’s level.

How Can I Keep My Child Engaged With Writing Practice

Sometimes practicing writing can feel like work to kids. Especially if you’re just introducing writing or worksheets.

If your kids are struggling to stay on task it’s important to consider a few things. First of all, are they ready for worksheets? Preschool aged kids do best when they’ve already developed pre-writing skills. Before they can form letters kids should build strength and technique by tracing lines and basic shapes.

If you feel your child is ready for worksheets but just isn’t staying focused here’s a few ideas that might help:

Offer Rewards and Incentives

Let’s face it - most of the time we do things in life because we want rewards or fear consequences. Kids are no different. Instead of pressuring them into working, though, it’s best if you give some kind of reward or incentive.

It might be a sticker on a chart that will eventually lead to prizes, an outing or playdate when they’re finished with “work”, or doing something together that they love.

Make Sure Kids are at Their Best

You probably already know that there are certains times of day where your child is more agreeable than others. Take advantage of that and plan challenging activities like writing for those times where your kids are typically interested and engaged.

Keep it Short

The average preschooler has about a ten minute attention span for difficult tasks like writing. Trying to push beyond their limits not only makes learning a chore, it also creates tension between the two of you. Sometimes it’s best to just end the activity when young kids are losing focus.

Get Creative

Writing isn’t fun for all kids, especially preschoolers. That’s OK! Remember, just because your kid doesn’t want to write at age 3 doesn’t mean they won’t enjoy it by the time they enter kindergarten.

For those kids you still want to establish those early reading and writing skills, but you can do it in more interesting ways. Maybe you can have the child write with different instruments like markers or crayons. Another idea is to have them paint the word or arrange play dough over the letters. Look at what your kids are interested in and go from there!

Great for Fine Motor Skills

One last thing to keep in mind when using writing worksheets with your kids is that they don’t have to be done perfectly to be educational. What that means is even if your child traces just one word and opts to draw or scribble on the sheet they’re still developing fine motor and pre writing skills.

Preschool aged children shouldn’t be expected to write competently, especially younger ones. But, by introducing writing worksheets custom created for their age level and interests you’ll have a greater chance of success. If things don’t go well at first, keep trying.

At the end of the day, though, the important thing is to spend time with your kids and have fun!
